How To Build A Shed On A Budget

  • DIY fence picket garden shed!
In this video, I will be teaching you guys and gals how to build a shiplap garden shed or what some call a garden closet using nothing but 2x4s and pine fence pickets (besides the hardware). They are super handy to have around and can be used for about anything! Not just for garden storage! I'll also be showing you a couple of different ways to make your own shiplap!
This particular shed ends up being around 49" wide x 24" deep x 93" tall. You can alter any of those dimensions with minor adjustments.
So if your watching this video for the "Make Money Woodworking" series this is a perfect next-level build! The profit margins for sheds built this way is insane. I built this one for $160 including the hardware! So let's do some math... If it cost me $160 to make (Let the customer paint or charge extra for painting) and I can sell these for let's say $975 (Priced on the low side)... That's a net profit margin of 83.6% or a Profit Percentage of 509%! From the marketing standpoint I would make sure to hit on the fact that they can be used for so many things... garden supplies... pool supplies... about anything!
If you decide to build these to sell make sure to include some sort of mounting bracket or make sure the customer knows that they need to fasten it to a wall. I would have the customer pick the item up or charge for delivery. The roof can be detached if need be for transport.
    Have fun with this one!!!

Thanks for not editing out the nails and screws hitting the floor. This last week almost every time I set something down or reached for a tool… something would hit the floor. It was starting to get to me but now I know I’m in good company and laugh at myself a little more often.

Bro honestly putting a soft light in the eve or a ceiling mount light would be an awesome addition to this! I also thought about a small ramp as an accessory for elderly people to not worry about a small step to get over with a floor inside.
Yes that floor would increase the cost by about 100 dollars due to plywood prices currently but maybe using a few extra 3/4 pickets you could do a floor with that as well for maybe an additional 30 bucks. Just a thought. Do you have any feed back on this? I'd love to know your thoughts on this.

@MatthewPeech...as the excessive rain pounds my house while I watch this a second time...I have a suggestion for the bottom...create a strong 2x4 base that raises it up off the ground with pressure treated or cedar.

These would cost a fortune at my local independent garden centre. I built a garden shelving unit for my brother, it sits at the end of his patio as a screen but this takes it to the next level. I love it!

Love it! I'm gonna need to build at least one of these!
Speaking of making something bigger, I'm finishing up 6 farmhouse planters. The difference is I had to figure out the plans to make them 24". The larger size requires 9 fence pickets as opposed to your original project that only takes 3. They will be living at city hall and the community center of my town. Thanks for all the cool projects and videos!

One idea would be to use the more expensive cedar fence pickets for the roof. Resaw them in half and cut them to length. Dog ear them if you want that look on each shingle. Instead of 3/4" spacing on the sides of the truces, make it 1/2" (or 5/8" if you found properly sized pickets) and use the regular ship lapped pickets to make an underlayment for the roof. Much cheaper than plywood and looks nicer from the inside looking up. Then, cover it up with the cedar fence picket shingles. Just leave it bare, they will get that nice grey aged cedar look in a couple years. Use some black aluminum step flashing for the top.

I just (finally) got an 18V tool set as my first important step to getting back into woodworking -- and doing some much-needed work to my old house. Since I've got a nice selection of lumber in my storage buildings, I should have enough scrap to get a few pieces built and sold!

I'm thinking of making a variation of this as a firewood storage shed by the house in front of my garage. The wife was never happy with a metal storage rack and the wood could still get wet even though it was under the house eves. This would work perfect if I also built a raised base/floor for the firewood weight. The open top would help with air circulation and just needs a recessed insect screen to keep wasps out. I would use it for firewood moved from the main stack in the yard to be "ready for use" by the house. I could then paint it to match the house paint scheme with the doors keeping the wood hidden from view to keep the wife happy. Thanks for all your great videos and ideas!!!!

Great work! Could you please do a quick video on your dewalt Miter Saw station set up using the portable stand and wood that you’ve attached to make a flat and level work/cutting surface 💪

@@MatthewPeechWoodworking I bought a whole shop of Delta Rockwell tools for $3,000 when we lived in Maryland and put it in storage. We moved to Florida in November where I have a 2 car garage. It's a rental, and we are hoping they'll sell it to us and I'll build a 25 x 30 shop in back yard. I'm driving up to pick up the tools next week Your videos have given me lots of inspiration and I can't wait to get building!! Thanks for what you do. I'll be signing up for your Patrion.
