- DIY fence picket garden shed!
In this video, I will be teaching you guys and gals how to build a shiplap garden shed or what some call a garden closet using nothing but 2x4s and pine fence pickets (besides the hardware). They are super handy to have around and can be used for about anything! Not just for garden storage! I'll also be showing you a couple of different ways to make your own shiplap!
This particular shed ends up being around 49" wide x 24" deep x 93" tall. You can alter any of those dimensions with minor adjustments.
So if your watching this video for the "Make Money Woodworking" series this is a perfect next-level build! The profit margins for sheds built this way is insane. I built this one for $160 including the hardware! So let's do some math... If it cost me $160 to make (Let the customer paint or charge extra for painting) and I can sell these for let's say $975 (Priced on the low side)... That's a net profit margin of 83.6% or a Profit Percentage of 509%! From the marketing standpoint I would make sure to hit on the fact that they can be used for so many things... garden supplies... pool supplies... about anything!
If you decide to build these to sell make sure to include some sort of mounting bracket or make sure the customer knows that they need to fasten it to a wall. I would have the customer pick the item up or charge for delivery. The roof can be detached if need be for transport.
Have fun with this one!!!

Thanks for not editing out the nails and screws hitting the floor. This last week almost every time I set something down or reached for a tool… something would hit the floor. It was starting to get to me but now I know I’m in good company and laugh at myself a little more often.
You just have to laugh at yourself sometimes.
I just bought these plans. We were planning on a garden shed build and this is perfect. It also gets my wife's garden tools out of my outdoor shed workshop 😊
Bro honestly putting a soft light in the eve or a ceiling mount light would be an awesome addition to this! I also thought about a small ramp as an accessory for elderly people to not worry about a small step to get over with a floor inside.
Yes that floor would increase the cost by about 100 dollars due to plywood prices currently but maybe using a few extra 3/4 pickets you could do a floor with that as well for maybe an additional 30 bucks. Just a thought. Do you have any feed back on this? I'd love to know your thoughts on this.
I am a retired license Contractor of 38 years. Had a great business building homes and commercial buildings. In my retirement I like to keep busy in my shop. While a lot of your videos are very Elementary. they give me great ideas on fun woodworking projects Thank you for this great channel. Keep up the good work.
@MatthewPeech...as the excessive rain pounds my house while I watch this a second time...I have a suggestion for the bottom...create a strong 2x4 base that raises it up off the ground with pressure treated or cedar.
I understand u’r née for making money other than from u-tube subscriptions!
You are a genius. I love your show. Im sick with a cold so i am watching and making notes for when im better.
By far the best channel i have found. You make everything simple and explain in real talk. So glad i found this. Thanks from uk🤘
Thank you so much! Welcome aboard.
Perfect timing on this video. I've been needing to build something for my wife's garden tools. Your videos are a great way to relax in my sleeper after driving 600/700 miles a day.
Thanks! She will love it!
These would cost a fortune at my local independent garden centre. I built a garden shelving unit for my brother, it sits at the end of his patio as a screen but this takes it to the next level. I love it!
Love it! I'm gonna need to build at least one of these!
Speaking of making something bigger, I'm finishing up 6 farmhouse planters. The difference is I had to figure out the plans to make them 24". The larger size requires 9 fence pickets as opposed to your original project that only takes 3. They will be living at city hall and the community center of my town. Thanks for all the cool projects and videos!
Great work. Keep these videos coming. I'm currently working on my 3rd shed build and I will say they take quite a bit of time when building it by yourself. This video helps to show people all the work that goes into a shed.
I’m always so excited when I see one of your new videos pop up on my home feed! What you are doing with your content is exactly what I’m trying to accomplish with my woodworking venture! How’s about an updated shop tour! I’m in the process of building a new shop on my land that I could use for woodworking and would love to see more of your shop layout! Above all thank you so much for doing what you do Matt and the way your going you’ll be at the mill sub mark in no time!!!! Thanks again brother!
Great job Matthew. You are the master of low cost high profit brother!
This is awesome! This would be something that could keep you busy during the last of this winter to get ready for a spring sale!
Thank you for all you do for the small woodworker who wants to make some money! These builds are just amazing!
One idea would be to use the more expensive cedar fence pickets for the roof. Resaw them in half and cut them to length. Dog ear them if you want that look on each shingle. Instead of 3/4" spacing on the sides of the truces, make it 1/2" (or 5/8" if you found properly sized pickets) and use the regular ship lapped pickets to make an underlayment for the roof. Much cheaper than plywood and looks nicer from the inside looking up. Then, cover it up with the cedar fence picket shingles. Just leave it bare, they will get that nice grey aged cedar look in a couple years. Use some black aluminum step flashing for the top.
This build is definitely in my future to build. Love the build and inspirational of how easy it is to make it happen. 💯
Always inspiring to see your ideas and hear your encouragement! I just (finally) got an 18V tool set as my first important step to getting back into woodworking -- and doing some much-needed work to my old house. Since I've got a nice selection of lumber in my storage buildings, I should have enough scrap to get a few pieces built and sold!
Very nice!!!
Mathew
Thankyou so much for this video, and the compliment. I've been needing something for my knife making tools and forge for storage...this will be perfect....as always...AWSOME JOB....
Have a great day
I love this little shed. I would love this in my back yard but alas there is no room. But I am definitely going to be saving these plans for down the road when we eventually move. I love all the projects you have been showing lately.
The door overlay board is called a mullion
Another absolutely stunning piece!Thank you for this quality content 🙏
A great design and assembly. I have been enjoying your work and appreciate the encouragment you offer. Thanks !!
Awesome as always Matt! Definitely gonna make one of these for my wife and I’ll post some pics and see if I get any bites. Will keep you posted on any developments.
I love you are getting your son involved. I have 3 boys and want to start getting them in the shop once we find a new house. I love working on fine furniture but this is a great way to get them into wood working and teach them the business angle at the same time. God bless
Thank you I know the time and thoughts you put into this channel and your craft and always reminding us to think outside the box I definitely appreciate it
Another incredible build. You are so creative. I have one of those plastic sheds for my garden tools that is too small, guess I'll be building this in the near future!
Another great project and video. A larger magnet fastened to the end of a dowel makes quick work of cleaning up spills of screws and nails.
This is perfect timing. I love your videos and I love this particular one because I didn't know anything about shiplap. I only know the word. I'm going to be building a greenhouse and I was struggling with how I was going to put some wood on the side and now I know how.
Nice!!!
My son just built his garage doors and they look just like the shed doors. His garage needed something else. Now he can add that detail at the gable. Thanks.
Heck yea! This is great. I’m definitely gonna build this to help clean up the garage. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
That's awesome and I'm going to get the plans, because my Bride wants one. Thanks for sharing your COOL ideas and wisdom.
Hey. cool build. The strip covering the gap between two door panels, I believe is called an astragal. Digging the vibe man. I'll check out your channel.
Love it! Great work, as always
I love this! I had to closed youtube page when my wife walked inside so she doesn't see it. :) I might build one to see how it goes.
I'm thinking of making a variation of this as a firewood storage shed by the house in front of my garage. The wife was never happy with a metal storage rack and the wood could still get wet even though it was under the house eves. This would work perfect if I also built a raised base/floor for the firewood weight. The open top would help with air circulation and just needs a recessed insect screen to keep wasps out. I would use it for firewood moved from the main stack in the yard to be "ready for use" by the house. I could then paint it to match the house paint scheme with the doors keeping the wood hidden from view to keep the wife happy. Thanks for all your great videos and ideas!!!!
This is awesome! Thanks Matt!
Love this build!
I also love the fact that I am not the only one that drops all the brad nails and screws like that :)
I do it all the time, and my solution is usually magnets with a few 'magic words'.
My wife and I frickin loved this, and it didn't seem like it would be too hard to scale it up a little. Man that's an awesome build!
TY Brother that's really nice & still affordable, once again that's a good money maker. Thanks for all of your ideas here lately.
That was just beautiful. So well built and thought out. Got me thinking now.
Thanks! Was a fun build!
I appreciate you sharing all your ideas!
Love the build!! Up here in the northeast in New Hampshire, we use Generator Sheds, not sure if hillbillies use them, but that would be a great build out for you to show. I finished mine last summer and mostly learned what not to do LOL Especially as I never use plans other than drawing on paper…
Using treated lumber, and making a floor would be the two things I would change in this build! Pretty nice build overall! I might make this for my lawn tools (and maybe add a shelf on top to keep some small lumber)!
Nice! There is a ton of room overhead.
I was going to post to use treated lumber AT LEAST for everything near ground level. Wouldn’t even add $10 to the cost.
I wish your videos were around when I built my house! Your pointers on construction are priceless. Thank you for a well thought out build.
Of course! Better late than never right lol
I suffer from depression . Last month I stumbled on your video. I started building stuff like like bird houses and noodle boards love it.
Thats awesome. Woodworking is great because of the amount of focus you have to have in it. Helps to clear your mind. Keep it up!
Matthew you have given me inspiration!!! I have struggled trying to figure out building a shed between my house and the fence that is less than six feet! My brain exploded!!! 💣 Thank you!!!!
This is the exact project I wanted to build for my yard tools. I'm so glad you posted this so I can make one similar. I was going to just wing it, but now I don't have too.
Glad I could help!
Good stuff and another great video. Thanks!
Amazing! Great project!
I couldn't have found a better teacher, thank you for the excellent tutorials, I can not wait to start working on the planters👍
Great build!! Using a treated lumber for at least the ground-touching parts is and a floor is all I'd change.
Very nice Mathew! Shed side flower beds could be an optional feature and would dress the shed up even more.
Great video. I made a shed last summer for my 4wheeler and all my yard stuff out of free railroad ties and free giant pallets. The other day I made a whirligig for my yard, now I’m making a bunch cause everybody that sees it wants one.
Another awesome build.
Just purchased the plans for this one also had to go upgrade to the kreg 720 pro to make life easier, the old $40 kreg tool just isn't cutting it anymore, lol. Going to give this one a try this weekend and see how it turns out. Thank you for your continued inspiration with these videos.
Awesome! You're going to love the 720 pro. I loved my K4 until I got my hands on the 720 pro.
I love this channel! I’m excited to build this shed. I just bought the plan 😊
Fantastic build! Been planning to add a bathroom to my shop. I may have to lengthen this design and do something similar. Thanks again for sharing!
I love this building. Any chance you could add some plans for a variation of the roof? A slant shed roof or even a small salt box style. Keep these videos coming, you are an awesome teacher. 😊
This is a functional and decorative item that I will add to my list of products. Well designed and used popular colours. Thanks for your great video and ideas
You are quite the craftsman. I love your projects. I've built a few of the easier ones. I'm retired and not trying to start a business. Thanks for all the ideas.
Te quedo super de lujo matt 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Built this and it came out waaaaaay better than expected! Thanks 👍
Great video great work. After watching your video I decided to build one following your instructions THANK YOU for posting this video I wish you the best
Thanks Ivan!
That is so cool I have so many cedar planks an interesting thickness and anywhere from 6 to 8 in wide so I could do something really cool like that with those thanks for the idea nice video thanks for sharing
Man your work is amazing I love how you help us all get better
Wow awesome!
I love the shiplap
Another great inspirational vid! Really like how you ship lapped the fence boards man. This channel is awesome, and really down to earth.😉
I’ve bought your plans before. They are awesome!
Still in AWE of your last project 🙂 This so useful and compact ✔️
Modified the build a bit to make a chicken coop. Great idea milling those pickets to use as siding!
Thank you for this video!
Great project! I am definitely have my students build one or two of these!
Love the painting tip 😀👍
Not only a great how to build video but also marriage advice. Awesome way to have assistance from the better half but make it her idea!!!
Hello from South Texas !!!!
Great build .
Your clickbait pic says u can build this for $1401. I think I said it only costs like $140. I’m probably seeing it or hearing it wrong but might help to edit that and get more hits. I can’t get enough of this channel!!!! Thx!!!
My guess is that’s an exclamation point???? My iPhone is new but the smaller one so maybe that’s why. Thx!
Awesome Matt! I was thinking maybe some small planter boxes on the ends? Maybe for growing herbs or flowers?
Great idea!
Thank you for talking about mental health. You and the awesome stuff you build have helped me immensely. This might sound a little corny but to me, you are like the Bob Ross of woodworking. I’ve got a couple items that I would like to add to the brag board when I get a chance. All inspired by, you. Thank you.
@Matt, woodworking is very therapeutic for me. Allows me to turn my thinking to something productive. I did purchase the plans from your Etsy shop and I'm pretty good at building "things" so I'm going to try this. My mom turned me omto your UA-cam channel. I must say, with each build, it just gets better. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills. 😊
Great tutorial. This is my 2nd video I've seen you do and I'm hooked. So yes I had to hit the SUBSCRIBE button. I am going to try sliding barn doors... see how that goes.
Keep doing what you're doing. I'll be watching.
I'm about 80% done with this build for my mother and I'm so excited to show it to her. this is the first real carpentry project I've tackled with some help from my dad and its been a great learning experience. I've put in a lot of hours so far but I'm confident with some repetition (and not cutting off the end of my thumb on the table saw like an idiot) I could batch one of these out in a couple days labor easily. I'll make sure to tag you on insta when it's all done!
Dude, I love your work! So happy the algorythm sent you to me.
Outstanding
Nice work, thanks for showing me how to do it.
Love this idea! Gonna make a slightly smaller version for our pool stuff. Thanks for another great video Matt! Did you ever end up naming that dresser?
Great job 👏
Thank you! 😃
So love ❤️ what you do, you have inspired me to build one
I’ve been checking UA-cam almost every day waiting on a new video, and it has finally come,it was definitely worth the wait,I love it,I’m gonna make these,I still don’t have a miter saw, or table saw but I can work with what I have thanks Matt,I can get a lot of $$$$ from these thanks for another awesome video, and don’t feel bad I knock of tons screws too,and say a few choice words lol, keep em coming brother ✌️
Thanks! I usually post on Sunday mornings cst!
Awesome as always brother
For real??
Looks great
Right on! Ty so much! I just found you yesterday! I’m hooked man!
‘My Painter’
Heidi✌️
love it!!!
this build is very awesome!
Glad you like it!
Another awesome build. Great money maker idea
Awesome idea! Next year I'm gonna do a similar build, deeper with a plywood roof and use as an ice fishing shanty!
Cool idea! Ice fishing 🥶
Great work! Could you please do a quick video on your dewalt Miter Saw station set up using the portable stand and wood that you’ve attached to make a flat and level work/cutting surface 💪
That's awesome Matt!!
Thank you Steve!
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking I bought a whole shop of Delta Rockwell tools for $3,000 when we lived in Maryland and put it in storage. We moved to Florida in November where I have a 2 car garage. It's a rental, and we are hoping they'll sell it to us and I'll build a 25 x 30 shop in back yard. I'm driving up to pick up the tools next week Your videos have given me lots of inspiration and I can't wait to get building!! Thanks for what you do. I'll be signing up for your Patrion.
Great job, I'm gonna make one for my outdoor cooking area! I'll add a floor as well.
Thanks for the great idea!
And I also have a paint pro lol, I've done the same hand off so I could work on something else 🤣
Simply amazing 👏!
Thank you very much!
Thanks
