But first you had to spend 10 to 20k buying the diesel over the hemi you already had. Then add some money for emissions problems ("when", not "if"), and don't forget to budget another 3k to 4k to drop your tranny and swap that belt out. I think the diesel is a good engine, but the time to buy it was back in 2019 before buying your hemi. Once you bought that truck, financially you'd always be ahead keeping that instead of buying the diesel. BTW, I regularly get 22+ MPG out of my hemi on the highway, just have to be careful how you drive.
@@JohnSmith-ev1sm1. It has a 100,000 mile warranty. Vs zero warranty and a nasty hemi tick. 2. I won’t own the truck in 15 years when the belt needs service. 3. I have this exact truck (well, in gray) with an Alu-Cabin and I just flat-towed my Wrangler nearly 2000 miles from SLC to Merus in TX and the truck was rock-solid and averaged 13 or so for the trip up and over the Rockies and with some serious headwinds at various points. With just the Alu-Cabin dry, I’ve seen up to the low 20s. The only issue is my truck burns A LOT of DEF. GM is saying my usage is within range given that I’m maxing payload and tow capacity, but that’s been the only negative surprise. Off-road (even with the Alu-Cabin), this truck is quite impressive, especially for a 1/2 ton. Drives great and there’s plenty of power. I really don’t think a Raptor would have worked for what I was trying to do, but the ZR2 Bison is working really well - for 8000+ miles, anyway. Fingers crossed!
Great real world review! What is a LOT of DEF? I am asking specifically because I have a 2023 GMC Sierra HD Duramax. So I am curious comparatively what your DEF usage is. Thanks!
@@is6566 - never more than 2000 miles per 2.5 gallons since new. On my recent trip, I’d say a few hundred miles per 2.5 gallons. The guys at the dealer also thought it was high usage, but GM told them that it was within “normal” usage given the payload and flat tow. Everything else is normal and the truck runs great so I’m crossing my fingers that there’ll be no future issues.
Heavy payload definitely increases the DEF usage for my HD, too. Normally around 1 gallon per 1,000 miles cruising on the highway. I don’t tow but when I loaded up with 4,000 pounds payload then it was drinking DEF hard. I wouldn’t worry about, especially if unloaded and no towing it goes back to normal usage.
@@is6566- thanks. At this point, the Alu-Cabin is permanent and carries about 750lbs, so that’s as normal as I get. Definitely much better without the tow.
GM needs to make this trim stand out a bit more..like what they did with the Colorado ZR2 Bison. Give it big tires, wider flares, and the hydraulic bumpstops. GM gave the full-size trucks a watered-down version of the ZR2.
Love the Silverado ZR2 Bison but my only gripe is that it should stand out from the rest of the trucks. It looks basically the same as an LT trail boss which is considerably cheaper. It should look more pronounced like how the Colorado ZR2 Bison has wider fender flares and bigger tires. 33s on a full size truck makes it look like it skipped leg day at the gym. =)
This diesel is a boss. Get rid of the shifter and either put in a proper PRND console shift, or bring back the column shifter. That is still safely and reliably working on the HD's.
I LOVE my 2024 Silverado Trail Boss LT w/3.0l LZ0 "Baby" Duramax, what a great engine... It also came with the Goodyear Wrangle Territory MT's, which BTW were only a load range "C" tire, I opted to replace them with the new Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac RT's in a load range "E", they are a little stiffer, but the tradeoff is well worth it... While I did consider upgrading the suspend to the ZR2 DSSV suspension kit, at $5000 it wasn't worth the cost, so I changed out the poor(I'm being kind) factory rancho's for some Bilstein 5100's in the rear, and Bilstein 6112 struts up front, and what a difference that made, added a set of AirLift 5000 air bags for towing, as the factory suspension is quite soft and even 3000lbs would squat the truck, not last, but last for now, I added a set of N-FAB RKR rails...
I have a 2022 ZR2 with the 6.2 gas and I love it. Tow a 7500lbs travel trailer, a tandem axle dump trailer, an enclosed car hauler, and a 7000lbs 16 foot flat deck. It does a great job with them but I am curious if the diesel is really any more economical overall when everything is taken into consideration between the two of them.

The 7000 lbs towing the flat deck is nice but let's see it towing that weight in a travel trailer or cargo trailer with a flat front end going 110 to 120 kmh. If it takes that long to get to 60 mph pulling that flat deck then what is the time it takes to pass from say 90 to 120 kmh vs the 6.2 gas engine which is significantly quicker 0 to 60 according to your test results.
