He may be gone but won’t be forgotten for a long while and I am 54 and I think he a legend and at least he left some of his memories thanks for sharing
Thank you! 💐 I'm 73. My daddy absolutely LOVED Sammy Davis, Jr. Daddy was born in 1914. He'd seen him on stage. When he was on TV, daddy lit up like a 🎄! Daddy had ALL his records. When I grew up, I had the HONOR & the PREVILEDGE of seein him in concert. PRICELESS!
I'm not knocking Michael Jackson but when they call him the greatest enterainer of the century I just laugh. SDJ was a better dancer by far, an actor, did really good impressions and was 1,000 times better singer. Anyone?
When I heard him sing this song I got goose bumps I cried then because of the meaning of the song I smiled again. He was fantastic. My heart hurts because we lost him so young. Rest in Peace Mr Davis I will always love and miss you
Sammy was the greatest all round performer of all time. Singer, dancer, dramatic and comic actor, stand up artist, and brilliant impersonator. I mean, just listen to his superb vocals here. Brilliant.
This is the greatest voice of all time. His smooth tone, voice strength is so natural, puts many singers to shame, including Sinatra. He didn't have to force the power of his voice or warble like most singers do now. He is the epitome of the total entertainer of all time. But its that voice that will never be forgotten, a one of a kind. It's horrible he was never given the respect he most certainly deserved. Even Sinatra was nasty to him. Sammy deserved sooo much more. RIP Sammy, you are remembered and loved still in 2023
I honestly think Frank brought Sammy into the Rat Pack because he knew his talent was so great that it'd be better to be with him than compete against him. Frank was good in his own right but, Sammy is the G.O.A.T. Had he not been held hostage by those damn cigarettes I bet he would be singing today at almost 100. It was great that they celebrated his 60th anniversary before his passing.
I swear to the almighty I want this song played at my funeral---(my life anthem!!) And WOW--Sammy Davis Jr KILLS it here--what an absolutely amazing talent he was!!
For some unknown reason, this song by Sammy Davis, Jr. popped into my head and said to me... 'You need to sing this at karaoke!" So I came here to UA-cam to find a version. And i'm so glad that I found this live version from Playboy After Dark. I am a 69 year old schooler tryin' my best to keep these songs alive, as well as myself! 🧙♂️🪄🙌🎤🎶💖🐈
I'm 29 years old and I was brought up on entertainers like him and all the good singers he literally had it all he could do everything and now you don't see anyone who can do one thing as good as Sammy
I was headed to my class at UNLV Las Vegas in 1974. I was going east on Sahara Ave and stopped at the red light at the Strip. As soon as I stopped, Sammy Davis Jr pulled up next to me in his bright red Cadillac with a white top and white interior. He looked over at me. It was just the 2 of us at the intersection. What a treat that was !!! He did have a powerful & beautiful voice !!!
Imagine him coming on to a talent show and singing this, he would literally blow everyone off the stage. An incredible talent, could sing, act and dance. What a legend.
This song IS Sammy. It says everything about him. He LIVES it, not just sings it. It also shows off his magnificent voice. It brings me to tears every time. He left us way too soon. He is sorely missed.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
He had more talent than ALL those Rat Pack guys put together... (and I LOVE Sinatra) Sammy never got his deserved due for his voice...This is absolutely unbelievable.
Sinatra, and (((the rat))) pack, were terrible. Standards are not good. The music was subversive, and J--ish. (((They))) were (((Satanic))) entertainers.
Yo estuve ahí a finales de los 60. Trabajando de mecánico de aviones y nos invitaron por terminar el trabajo 4 meses antes. Ahora tengo 89 años y lo recuerdo como el primer día..❤
Legend lives forever. Sammy Davis Jr. could sing, dance, act and also direct a Western. He got so much energy and show business knowledge. He was a member of the Rat Pack. He was a unique entertainer. Thank you for preserving his legacy!
Sammy took all the racial hate he endured when he was young and molded it into not only the greatest entertainer of all time but, a great humanitarian as well. The only thing that took him down was those damn cigarettes. When the doctors told him they could fight his cancer at the cost of his voice he thought to himself he could never imagine not being an entertainer so he kept doing what he did best until he couldn't. He still lives on. Thanks for posting.
When I go to the next phase of life.....I don't want sadness where they are keeping my body. I want the DJ to play 3 songs as they carry my body away.....MY WAY by Frank Sinatra.....I'VE GOT TO BE ME by the great Sammy Davis Jr and YESTERDAY WHEN I WAS YOUNG by Roy Clark.......my spirit will go happy to the next phase.
Great singing by Sammy Davis Jr. here. And the lyrics are awesome, esp. "I cannot be right for somebody else, if I"m not right for me." Truer words never spoken about life and dating.
Had to look this up, can't believe how good he sounds on this, and was in his time, along with all the others rat pack crooners. Sammy does this song the best, he really put feeling into it. How lucky we were to grow up with so much talent in the 60s. Feel sad and nostalgic.
Whether I'm right or whether I'm wrong Whether I find a place in this world or never belong I gotta be me, I've gotta be me What else can I be but what I am I want to live, not merely survive And I can't give up this dream Of life that keeps me alive I gotta be me, I gotta be me The dream that I see makes me what I am That far away prize, a world of success Is waiting for me if I heed the call I won't settle down, won't settle for less As long as there's a chance that I can have it all I'll go it alone, that's how it must be I can't be right for somebody else If I'm not right for me I gotta be free, I've gotta be free Daring to try, to do it or die I've gotta be me I'll go it alone, that's how it must be I can't be right for somebody else If I'm not right for me I gotta be free, I just gotta be free Daring to try, to do it or die I gotta be me

Yes, I read his biography.
Msravilh
richardfalter, same for me. He was a huge multi-talented star. And he went through some very painful times, mostly because of his race.
The ultimate performer. He could do it all. Dance, act, sing. The triple act personified.
Also do impersonations, tell jokes. I'm sure there many other things too.
One of the most talented human beings to walk this Earth--he was simply incredible!!
A fantastic drummer too!
Also played multiple instruments.
Whose still watching Sammy in 2021!!!xx

Whether I'm right or whether I'm wrong
Whether I find a place in this world or never belong
I gotta be me, I've gotta be me
What else can I be but what I am
I want to live, not merely survive
And I can't give up this dream
Of life that keeps me alive
I gotta be me, I gotta be me
The dream that I see makes me what I am
That far away prize, a world of success
Is waiting for me if I heed the call
I won't settle down, won't settle for less
As long as there's a chance that I can have it all
I'll go it alone, that's how it must be
I can't be right for somebody else
If I'm not right for me
I gotta be free, I've gotta be free
Daring to try, to do it or die
