Quite possibly the greatest all-around entertainer of the 20th century. Mr. Davis could do it all... sing, dance, act... you name it, he did it, and did them all with unmatched style and grace. Even while the cancer that took his life was draining his physical attributes, he never lost the passion and zeal for life that defined his character. Sammy Davis Jr. was one-of-a-kind, and those of us who relished his talent can be forever grateful.

Sammy Davis Jr. may have been a class act in public to his fans, but he was far from it in his personal life - on his wedding night with his first wife, he allegedly got so drunk that he tried to choke her! And his later marriage to Altovese Gore was supposedly a loveless marriage!

It didn't matter what he was doing, singing, acting, or playing the clown and making us laugh, he was a genius and a gift to the world and us all. The greatest all around entertainer? An amazing piece of music that moved me since childhood. I was 6 when Davis' single was released and very fondly recall it on the radio and seeing him perform it on TV. What I didn't get back then is how deep, how relevant this song is for any oppressed peoples, especially for an African-American artist singing it at that time, as the civil rights era became inflamed. This was released the year Dr. King was assassinated. The inclusion of the lyric "I've gotta be free" in this only strengthens the urgency and empowerment. Davis was a gem, infinitely talented and bold. Forget the damned commercial it's on; listen to the song in full. And then listen one more time.

I didn't realize how great of a person some legends were when I was much younger and much more ignorant taking for granted how special they were and Sammy Davis Jr being one of them but after watching the first Jerry Lewis Labor Day MDA Telethon after his death in 1990 seeing the Tribute to him that man was out of this World. He wasn't a normal human like most but like Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Presley, Karen Carpenter, Luciano Pavarotti and a minority certain other humans born. Almighty God had something special in store when He created Sammy Davis Jr for the life he lived from that day he was born on December 8, 1925 in Harlem, New York, United States until the day he died on May 16, 1990 in Beverly Hills, California, United States.

@ voicegirl555. Sammy Davis Jr. would have been 93 years-old NOT "young"! As the late, great comedian/social commentator George Carlin accurately stated, people have this ridiculous fear of getting old so they b.s. themselves by refering to themselves and others as "young" when they are actually old! People have got to get over their sickening avoidance of reality and use of soft, euphemistic language!

@@michaelbarlow6610 You never saw Sammy Davis Jr. perform? He was always current with the times. In the 60s he wore bell bottom pants and love beads and he was in his 40s! I have nothing againist aging. It is not the aging in your life, but how you live your life that counts. We are all going to get old whether we liked it or not! That is life! Sammy coming this December would have been a young 96! I can see him still getting on stage even at 95 tap dancing and enjoying his life. So come December I will be wishing him a Happy 96 years young!

@@voicegirl555 . I never saw Sammy Davis Jr. perform live in concert, although I saw him perform on television numerous times. I stand by my previous comment that as the late great comedian/social commentator George Carlin accurately stated, people like to b.s. themselves into thinking that they are not getting old by using the sickening, avoidance of reality term "years young"! Sammy Davis Jr. would not have been 96 years-young! He would have been 96 years-OLD!!!!! I would suggest that you and others like you stop deceiving yourselves and see reality as it is!

@@michaelbarlow6610 You don't understand what I meant at all. On December 8th 2021 The Late Great Sammy Davis Jr. would be 96 years old. But to me and all his fans he would be 96 years young because he always seem young at heart no matter his age. This is the last I will say about this!

@@voicegirl555. Being "young at heart" as the lyric to the old song (and the title of the song) goes is one thing, deliberately avoiding using the word "old" just to avoid the reality that all people get old is the problem (among many) in our irrational society, which truth be told is getting increasingly worse all the time!

Sammy Davis Jr. What can you say about this amazing superstar? He was ultra talented. Comedic, funny, a great mimicker and impressionist, a great actor but, above all, a man with with a wonderful voice. At my funeral I’d be happy for this splendid human being to sing me out with this song to my friends and family. Thanks Sammy for all the pleasure you’ve given me throughout my life. Love you to bits. 👍❤️
