What a great way to start off my celebration of my all-time favorite Bond film! Loved every second of this one…here’s to another 60 years of Goldfinger!
Has always been my favorite Bond Film. I just remember seeing it for the first time in the theater after a few airings on ABC where they cut off the pre-titles sequence. It was mind blowing. A few weeks ago Kathy and I caught a showing at Bryn Mawr Film Institute and she was mesmerized as well. It’s just awesome. Now she wants an Aston too!
I watched it recently after a long time. Absolutely loved it, Goldfinger is one of the best bad guys ever. Bond is almost a supporting character in that movie
BRILLIANT Video! Beautifully summing up exactly why Goldfinger is such a true classic of the cinema. To me it is simply the best James Bond movie of all time. Sure, occasionally it gets replaced by some of us by more recent films like getting excited by the latest shiny new toy. But we always come back here - where it all began. Dr No and From Russia with love were great Spy films. But as you pointed out - It was Goldfinger that took James Bond to a whole new level. The true start of the 007 franchise. The blueprint for not only the entire Bond series, But just about every action adventure movie or hero that came after - all the way up until today. Sean Connery in this movie showed everyone how it should be done. And in 2024 - his influence is still felt in movies and TV shows everywhere. Can't wait to see your continuing coverage of the 60th anniversary in London!
David, you're such a great positive force in the James Bond world! I'm sure people not in the Bond world can't avoid being smitten by your positive outlook on life. Great stuff.
Goldfinger is probably the Bond film I watched the most...I know every frame of that film. I love it to death. On that note I haven't actually seen it for probably 2-3 years. I did post a celebration of the film on my Facebook. i was part of the Graham Rye James Bond Fan Club in the UK in the late 80 early 90s and was invited to a gathering in 1992 at Pinewood Studios. I remember seeing the Goldfinger Factory among many other things there. Happy B-Day GF!
It is all that and something more for me. I was helping take care of my Dad, who was slowly dying from liver cancer. The movies were a respite, a chance to rest a while and enjoy. Dad and I had some Bond moments too. Sorry to be maudlin, but the early Bonds are the best and a source of joy!
I’m sorry to hear about your loss and what you’ve been going through. Goldfinger also means something very personal to me as it was the last James Bond movie that my mother and I watched together before she died from cancer.
Absolutely brilliant video about a great film - I think that ultimately Goldfinger established all of the best tropes and the template for the rest of the franchise. Time to throw a hat...
I can’t imagine the effort it took to convince your significant other to get a life size golden Jill Masterson doll. I think my girlfriend would kill me if I showed up with it. I first watched Goldfinger back in 2003 during Spike tv’s Thanksgiving day Bondathon(they need to bring it back). It was my first Connery Bond and wasn’t sure if I would like it since it was older but man, that was a magical experience. I rewatch it every year on Thanksgiving and am looking forward to celebrating its 60th and the 21st anniversary of my first viewing.
Went to switzerland especially to pay homage to the greatest bond and greatest bond film. A dream to drive on the Furka pass to celebrate 60 years of my favourite film😊
17th September 1964, Odeon Cinema Leicester Square. The movie had to be shown ten minutes late because of the crowds and the breaking of windows from fans excitement outside... It's the movie that set the benchmark for ALL to follow. Happy 60th Anniversary Mr Goldfinger 🎉
Definately a perfect film...not sure if it's my fave Bond film, but it would be close. I think Connery is superb in this once and never seemed so comfortable and confident again.
I hadn't even realised it was the anniversary. This is a shocking coincidence because I have started re-reading the novel and rewatched the movie yesterday.
Goldfinger was always my favourite, I even had the Corgi DB5 in gold when it came out (I'm 66) , however I have come to prefer From Russia With Love as it's more spy orientated.
Sean Connery had the right look, and especially in Goldfinger, had the right measure of self-assurance and sophistication, and, unlike the others who played the part, he was cool, without trying to be cool; he was Bond, without trying to be Bond. Just the right 007!
Goldfinger is my Favorite Bond Film it's perfect in every way from the Villains to the Bond Girls to the MI6 Regulars and the Gadgets and the Music ( Hey Intrada and La La Land Records where is the 60th anniversary 2 Disc CD ) and Finally the Man Himself Sean Connery . Goldfinger is the Movie that my Best Friend who was a Bond Fan and I wasn't into James Bond it was this film he showed me first he was like if you don't like Goldfinger then Bond isn't for you and it worked
I've just finished reading the book, I was surprised how close the film stuck to it. For me, the most influential thing the film did was to cement the franchise moving forward; if it had been a flop, EoN may not have made any more Bond films! 😮
Happy 60th Anniversary to the London premiere of "Goldfinger" on September 17, 1964. The UK-wide release happened the following day on September 18, 1964. Unfortunately, the USA release didn't occur until December 22, 1964, so American fans had to wait just a little over three months to see this great film. I personally think that "Goldfinger" is the best Bond film ever! I was born just five months before "Goldfinger" was released, but as a young child in the 1970's, I quickly became a Bond fan and was lucky to see "Live and Let D*e" and "The Man with the Golden G*n" when each debuted in theaters. Sean Connery was and still is the quintessential James Bond. Roger Moore was great as well, but he played Bond in a completely different style from Connery. I am looking forward to Bond number 26, and I hope they won't alter the formula from what has worked successfully for the last 62 years.
This is your most intense video. Normally you are more laid back. I think Goldfinger is the perfect movie. It is so much fun, style and thrills. I think the villains and plot have something to do with it. The plot is audacious but plausible, unlike, for example, The Spy Who Loved Me. Jaws, to me, is farce, and I have never taken to him (as you seem to have) but Odd Job is sheer menace. Nobody thinks it is farce when he beheads the statue. And then he does the same thing to Tilly - there are real stakes even in the golden girl, so that the climactic scene in the amazing gold vault is truly menacing - the way he moves, etc. And the freedom-loving among us, how we celebrate that little tap on the bottom. Reminds us of what we have lost in today's puritanical society. The fun in life, and sheer charisma of Sean Connery - the way the golf game plays out. Just sheer fun end to end but always with stakes. Got to go now, something big's come up.
I have a film blog so I will celebrate by writing an entry about Goldfinger. It’s far from my favorite Bond film but it is one of the most fun. I think part of what makes it special is it has both a classic villain and henchman. Jaws is a classic henchman but few Bond fans place Drax and Stromberg at the top. Conversely classic main villains like Silva or Dr No do not have henchmen that we remember as the best parts of the film.
I like how in the old James bond films were more realistic, as James's bond would usually call for backup, something missing in recent James's bond films. Nowadays its James Bond taking out in entire army sometimes maybe with a second person but still there's too many enemies to handle. Calling in the Army always made the fight scans more epic.
Great video David! Gold finger was the first Bond movie I enjoyed in the theater. It was a double feature with Thunderball! From that point forward I was hooked.
Goldfinger is my favorite Bond film. It has it all, a tight script, a fine director, a proper cast, a fine production crew and undeniably one of the finest film scores ever composed by John Barry. It was and is the perfect Bond experience. I'm rather biased when it comes the earlier movies because I feel Sean Connery was James Bond. I only wish George Lazenby had stuck to the role and allowed himself to grow as an actor and as the character. He would have been far better as Bond than Moore. Roger Moore was a fine actor and I did enjoy the movies but at times they got too silly and he never assimilated the foundations of James Bond. He kept sliding back into his incarnation of The Saint. Stunts and fancy gadgets don't a Bond film make. It takes literate scripts and intelligent characterizations not a constant rollercoaster ride. Adventure yes but not improbable plotting. Brosnan and Dalton did okay but not til Daniel Craig did we really get James Bond Back. I await Bonds next cinematic event.
Ok , the actor who played Gold finger , was in Chatty chitty Bang Bang . And also Desmond Luellyn was also in the film , also it was written by Ian Fleming, what a coincidence. All the Best. Simon
It's hard to describe how absolutely huge Bond was at the time. It was so different from the Craig era. Craig had a successful run but he wasn't the glorious Bond that Connery was.
"Goldfinger" is absolutely a benchmark, at least for the Bond films. I just went through all of them and asked, "How does it compare to Goldfinger"? I decided that "Thunderball" was a dead heat, and "Casino Royale" (the serious one) comes really close.
It appears like we may be getting an expanded Goldfinger soundtrack soon from Lalaland. Hopefully they were able to find the master tapes with the unreleased cues.
How ill be celebrating well i went to the International Spy Museum in DC For the Bond in Motion exhibit I watch Goldfinger before I left for Washington for my Vacation then in November after Spooky Month I'm doing a Complete Bond Marathon and Finally I'll Listen to the Music Score on CD
Goldfinger still holds up, but I could do without all these dudes trying to bring that baby blue onesie back...;) My mom worked in a movie theater in 1964 and shares stories of what it was like being a part of all the hoopla surrounding the original release! Lucky her!
Enjoyed your video, David. Your enthusiasm is entertaining. Gert Frobe was perfectly cast as Goldfinger (although I don’t understand why he was dubbed). Harold Sakata was fabulous as Oddjob. The great Shirley Bassey had a hand in the film’s success, since the soundtrack album was a best-seller. That said, I’m sorry to rain on the 60th anniversary parade. “Goldfinger” is one of the most overrated films in the series! To begin with, I am not a fan of Guy Hamilton’s work. (Do not get me started on his three later films!) I have seen TV episodes with more style. His process photography is all-too-obvious, his action scenes incredibly flaccid. Yes, that includes the Bond-Oddjob fight and the military raid on Fort Knox. The gassing of the soldiers is one of the most ridiculous ever! The toss-about in the barn is totally annoying (along with the musical cues)! Above all else, James Bond is simply a fool in this film. He is easily captured (so much for the Aston-Martin) and spends most of the time as a prisoner. And wow, he’s in Kentucky - the banjo bit, horse farm, mint juleps, and the sighting of Kentucky Fried Chicken remind us. Bond simply does not display the intensity or presence of the first two films. As Sean Connery acknowledged, once audiences saw the Aston-Martin, there was no going back with regard to gadgets; and the Bond character got lost in the shuffle. (After “Thunderball,” Terence Young had had enough. By the way, that film grossed much more.) Sorry, David! Perhaps you’ll forgive me, since I still have my original “Corgi Toys” Aston-Martin.
"Goldfinger 2: Oddjob Strikes Back - Staring George Lazenby Jr. as James Bond 3000, MI6's latest in cyborg technology, built to defend Britian in the 31st century."
Dr. No of course seems subdued in 2024 but no one thought it was subdued in 1962. It had more, sex, violence, and jump cuts than any mainstream movie of that year.
Im in a minority as I think its just ok. I mean, yes, it sets the baseline but what does Bond actually do? He spends almost the whole film as GF's prisoner and just sits/wanders about a bit. He doesnt even disarm the bomb. Alot of the book has been cut for the film, which is a shame as the book give Bond more agency.
Around my 3-4th favorite, but not perfect. It suffers from "..if only they had just..." In the case of GF, the biggest problem (like several Bonds, if not most)was the tail end. To me, from the moment Odd-job started away to the car crusher bit, the film lost momentum and the whole gassing thing was just dumb. It needed a shorter, snappier conclusion. That said, what David says here is nearly all true. FRWL was my perfect Bond movie in every way.
I wouldn't call James Bond an antihero. Why, because he kills people? If so, then Captain America is an "antihero" too. James Bond looks danger in the face without fear, and he does what he does because there are evil villains who need to be stopped. He has flaws, sure, but he is 100% a full-on hero.
Henry Cavill for the win. Bring back the Fleming / Terrance Young dashing hero with class, humor and danger or move on and retire 007. If you want to keep the franchise alive yet "woke" go with 006, 005,008. etc you get the idea.
I don't know why people love Goldfinger so much. To me, the film is overrated. Its not a garbage film but its definitely not great. There are 19 James Bond i enjoy more than Goldfinger.
Since we're painfully lacking Bond 26 news...these videos are fantastic in keeping the fandom going. Goldfinger rules. Keep up the great work, David!
Im not looking forward to Bond 26 news considering the new woke direction, to be honest

The Forgotten Weapons UA-cam channel made an interesting video about the guns used in Dr. No:

Nicesh.
I think you made your point. Thank you for the demonstration. Choose your next witticism carefully Mr.Zaritsky, it may be your last.
In Goldfinger, you have James Bond using a Rolex watch. I think this is the movie in which Sean Connery looks super or more handsome.
What’s your skin regiment? Your skin looks good for a fella in his late 50’s
Let's watch the James Bond Jr episode "Goldie's Gold Scam".
Goldfinger is good but not better than Casino Royale…nothing is
One hundred and 20 million Dollars in 1964 is about $1.16 billion in today’s money. M
Henry Cavill for the win. Bring back the Fleming / Terrance Young dashing hero with class, humor and danger or move on and retire 007. If you want to keep the franchise alive yet "woke" go with 006, 005,008. etc you get the idea.
GoatFinger.
Sorry don't know what the hell that us life thing was in my comment
Goldfinger is just not manly Bond
The last James Bond film was a woke joke piece of trash.. Goldfinger & Spy who loved me are Perfect!!
Yeah Bond is so woke now. I bet the next movie will introduce a female M or something crazy like that. It's PC culture gone mad!
I don't know why people love Goldfinger so much. To me, the film is overrated. Its not a garbage film but its definitely not great. There are 19 James Bond i enjoy more than Goldfinger.
HE LOVES... ONLY GOOOOLDDD!
"Would you like a smoke and a pancake, Mister Bond?"
