Thank you for best simple concise, complete uncomplicated explanation of sub woofer hook up. I have read and heard many convoluted, complicated explanations that left me very confused. You get 20 on a 1-10 grade. Thank you very much. namaste.

Great video. What does the left right y-cable do vs. 1 mono rca to say L?

    • @mobbman1

Nothing much. Gives a little bit of a stronger signal from the Reciever. Usually a sub with 1 sub cable running into a input such as a left input, is a LFE track based input. Sometimes its totally seperate on the amp and sometimes its integrated into the same Left input.

Daniel Skoropad when you use a splitter to a subwoofer that only has left/right audio in it amplifies the signal to the sub. yes it will work by plugging in just the left audio in but not as well.

Correct I have a old M&k V-125 subwoofer with mono left or left and right stereo inputs so for a one subwoofer output on reciever only one cable needed connected to mono input on sub. For stereo only use when you have a integrated amp capable of two left and right pre outs such as the Cambridge CXA80 for example.

Yes, that is exactly what he did, effectively. You just want to extend the short 1-inch cable sticking out of the amp, and make it a longer one. Your idea is sound.

  • @vicmaese

Since it's a mono amplifier, with a mono output, you'd be able to use just one input. Most amplifiers built into these subwoofers will accommodate. Maybe 15 years ago, you would have used "Audio Out" as your subwoofer out put on an old 5.1 reciever. What you're doing is adding an unnecessary cable, introducing noise into the signal, plugging adapters to cables and back again....

Instead of using the sub out, would it be posible to connect a Powered subwoofer (using its RCA input) with the RCA output to a Preamp? - you know, since the sub would already have the ability to customize the sound volume.
Also, If the subwoofer is a powered unit, with its own volume control, isn't it bad to hook it up to a reciveier that also has such ability? I read somewhere that doing so might damage the sub (or speakers, for the same principle)

I have an old Aiwa CX-ZL100 with a CD Digital Out (optical). Is it possible to use this to hook up an old but great LG passive subwoofer? My plan, if this is possible, would be to thread it through a Triad 250W subwoofer amplifier. If CD Digital Out would work, how would I do that? And, it would be great if someone would do a youtube video on these old things for vintage amps.

Optical is only capable of 2.1 channels in uncompressed audio.
HDMI is capable of many many many channels.
Standard is 7.2, but it is capable of far more uncompressed audio.
Why would a sub need HDMI? you only need an RCA cable between the sub and receiver. Other then a balanced XLR connector, there is no other way of doing a proper sub hookup>
HDMI is for the interconnect between the source media, AVR, and viewing device. It isn't meant to be a speaker hookup.

Love these amateur tutorials! lol You dont have to connect to both RCA inputs on sub unless you are intending on maintaining crossover functionality with your Amp. @@bittmanbobby a Single mono Subwoofer cable is what will work fine. A Y cable is Ok. It does give a little stronger of a signal to the Amp than a single cable when connected into rhe left input. Using a Y connector or y cable to connect into both left + right inputs on the back of a Subwoofer does give a bit more of a stereo Bass instead of a Mono cable into left input or LFE channel input.
