- In this video I depart my camp in the Mendocino National Forest in California. I cross over the Sierra Nevada Mountains via Donner Pass on I-80 east. I pass through an old mining town in Virginia City, Nevada before finding a free camp by Walker Lake. This was a great place to spend a few nights after some extended driving. I cook up some dinner in the camper van and talk about our winter plans.

*My name is Brian. I started living full time in a self built camper van in 2014 in my hometown of San Diego, CA. I hit the road full-time in 2015 to pursue seasonal work and travel around the U.S. I find free camping on public land and enjoy photography, hiking, biking, and kayaking in nature. Never heard of Virginia City?! 😳 Have you never seen Bonanza? Summer is when to go. (it's haunted too) There used to be a time when Virginia City actually closed for the winter. We don't get the winters we used to. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

It warms my heart to see you finding a sure footing in the life style you choose and finding love and companionship in Kelly. I’ve been watching you for several years, seeing you struggling to get the rig right, to live without chaotic thoughts, and to seek physical and emotional well being. Now look at you! You look at peace and confident. I would say that you are a successful nomad. Stay warm and safe on the road.
Brian is a true real life Nomad unlike some of these on UA-cam that are now buying up home base land.
Having grown up watching Bonanza every week, the only puzzle I couldn't figure out, was where they filmed an opening shot in a meadow, w/ the lake in the back. Nevada Days is a Blast in Verginia City, Oct 31st. Spent 30 yrs. working in the Casinos, it was only supposed to be a day job LOL.
@@bayside6207 Home base land is important as people grow old, also recent lockdown etc shows that having a safe place is important too. Some people have plans - maybe to do it for 3, 5 or ten years. Walker Lake is drying up (dropped 40 feet in the last 70 years) because farms are taking all the water from the Walker River for irrigation, mostly hay for stock animals. The lake can never replenish.
Sad.
I live in California, only 2 hours from Virginia City. So I frequent this cute little comstock town.
Welcome to northern Nevada! I highly recommend that you take time to visit Virginia City again and look into the many amazing events that take place throughout the year

That's really a sketchy road. Lots of accidents unfortunately. Love Walker lake. I've camped there a few times on my way to and fro from Lake Tahoe. So sad that it's shrinking! Keys and parrots go super well with chicken and rice. yum!

Virginia City is incredibly awesome. Ya gotta go see it. (I guess you are seeing it). Also Lake Tahoe is gorgeous but really only in summer. Wow, your voice really changes when you first wake up in the morning.

Maybe go back and check it out during a different time. So that way you can see the shops and everything with your wife. Heck, I would love to see that town, it looks fantastic.
When I was a kid in the 60s, the water level in Walker Lake was 80 feet higher than it is now and the trout fishing was some of the best anywhere. In the fall, thousands of waterfowl would stop there to rest on their way to Mexico. A natural slice of paradise in the middle of the desert. Now we have a slice of the Salton Sea instead. What did we get in return? Some hay fields around Yerington.

Great shirt , my wife and I have a fifth wheel that we keep all year round at a private campground in Port Austin, Michigan not too far from Bad Axe in fact we drive through it to get to our RV. Love watching keep up the amazing videos. Thanks

The old western TV show Bonanza was located in Virginia City, Nevada. Hoss and Little Joe went into Virginia City many times.

When I do go camping in my RV I love the sound of rain at night tapping on the rooftop= puts me right to sleep.

Hey Brian great video as always. I can remember staying in Tahoe years ago and we day tripped to Virginia City . Touristy but super cool with period actors and yes plenty of shops to spend money. Belly up to the bar for a sarsaparilla !
