    My personal theory regarding fairies goes to popular lore. Fairies are often portrayed as highly mischievous creatures, who's greatest assets are their small size and quick movement. They are disarmingly cute and misunderstood, as current fairy types are. Take this to their strengths against dragons. Dragons are mighty in size and strength, and their usual downfall is that their great pride makes them over look those that they consider to be weaker. Since a dragon would normally pay no mind to an insignificant fairy, the fairy would use their mischief to find a dragons weakest point. The dragon, not expecting it, would be dumbfounded to any way to combat so small a creature(hence the fairies immunity). As to their weaknesses, most fairies find themselves most vulnerable to the realism of an everyday world, making poison and steel, two of the most grimly "real" types, their greatest weakness.

    • @cynthiasitri
      @cynthiasitri 8 років тому +14

      The weakness to steel type comes from the aspect of fairies being weak to "cold iron", that iron either drained their magic or actually was toxic to them.

    • @soulzer1912
      @soulzer1912 8 років тому +2

      +Dakota Dicks Dragons may be old and wise but they're extremely prideful. So even if they learn from a mistake their pride won't allow them to show it because doing so would show proof that they made a mistake and know that they made a mistake. P.S. shutup cartman.

      @zinzolin14 8 років тому

      +Joseph Orona I really like your explanation, though its been rephrased everywhere on the internet, I'm always amazed by how different people interpret the Fairy-type. Adding to the idea of fairies being weak to the "real" types, I think overall the Fairy-type is a type that represent fantasies, dreams, goodness, and in a different way than Psychic, magic. This could add to the theme that all Fairy Pokémon represent in their designs and purpose in the game.

      HESHY ROGUE and what are knights wearing almost all the time when they save the fairies and/or the princesses and what almost always happens after they get saved

    • @soulzer1912
      @soulzer1912 8 років тому

      HESHY ROGUE it harps back to how sometimes princesses are called fairy princesses. Mostly because said princesses have magic in them in some format. However there are some stories that have a knight or knight-like person save a fairy and in most cases after they do they're "rewarded" for their services

    The reason Fairy type is immune to and super effective against Dragon types is, in all honestly, purely for gameplay balancing reasons. Dragons were absurdly overpowered in the previous generations. Lore-wise, dragons were sometimes described as being highly susceptible to magic.
    Fairy types are weak to Steel because in almost all sources of mythology about fairies, they are weakened and killed by iron -- it's like fairie kryptonite. (Remember how Captain Hook kept Tinkerbell imprisoned in what seems to be a cast-iron lantern?)
    Fairy types aren't very effective against Fire because they are guardians of nature, with their magic being derived from said nature -- Fire is a destructive force, but it is a completely natural destructive force, so they are just as powerless in stopping it as anything else.
    Poison type is good against Fairy because, in the Pokemon world, Poison types are very often representative of pollution -- you know, that stuff that *destroys nature.* (For the non-pollution-based Poison types, you could use the previous point about Fire and argue that a creature's natural venom is, well, natural).
    Fairy being good against Dark is just typical "good" magic > "bad" magic/malicious intent.
    The rest is kind of just because, really. Bug types aren't good against Fairy because fairies are protectors of the environments bugs live in, I guess? No clue about Fighting, although I guess Fighting represents mankind maybe...? (Plus I doubt you'd be able to just beat up a fairy...)

    • @KingFlameHawk
      @KingFlameHawk 8 років тому +5

      +Donovan Larsen Elves, especially in the original myths, are fairies. A fairy is a general term for basically any kind of mythical spirit. Look up the fair folk for some really weird stuff about fairy's.

      +Xaldyn Nemo Dragons Are Slain In FAIRY Tales In The End

    • @shots1471
      @shots1471 8 років тому +1

      But aren't Dragons dead at the end of fairy tales? And Tinker Bell was trapped in a iron cast... But wouldn't be trapped in a golden cast, makes h r still IN the cast, due to her small height? Captain Hook could've trapped Tinker Bell in a obsidian, diamond, etc.
      Also, your example about Tinker Bell contradicts what you said, as you said that fairies are killed by iron, but in no way did Tinker Bell get killed or get hurt by the iron. She got hurt BECAUSE he hit her with a sword (I think, it's been 7 years since I saw the film).
      In Poison, I completely agree with you, but isn't pollution a source that gets defeated in some fairy tales? I mean, if by pollution you mean actual humans. Humans are some kind of POLLUTION, as they cut trees AND create buildings in it. Some animals have gotten EXTINCT or CLOSE to extinction because of humans.
      Fire isn't necessarily a naturally made force. I've seen fire, since I like to create new things, and people are the perpetrators from some fires.

    Klefki are based on an old Pagan belief (or joke) that lost items (keys, remotes, etc) were actually taken from fairies. I was thinking that they should've drawn a fairy-looking Pokemon holding keys instead, and then I realized that they would end up looking like Flebebe.

    The reason why fairy types are strong against dragon types is cause in myths and legends it's usually through magical assistance a dragon can be slain. Only an enchanted weapon is able to get through the scales and magic shields can prevent being touched by the dragons flames.

    In fairy tales, dragons are villains. It's usually a spell that defeats them (like in the Disney version of Sleeping Beauty, the 3 good fairies enchant the sword for Prince Philip to kill the Mefilicent dragon). Thus, fairies defeat dragons. The end.

    My friend and I came up with a good theory. Dragon types are Pokemon that exert extreme energy and are almost unstoppable. It isn't the power of Dragon, but power that's overpowered. Fairies are the opposite. They are the lack of energy. They blast the lack of energy (kinda like black holes) if that makes any sense. They are immune to dragons because all of that energy is just absorbed. And when they use their lack of energy, or energy that absorbs all energy, dragons lose all of the energy they used, making the attack super effective.

      I like to think Pokémon usually go through violentn spasms and other things during evolving. Maybe it dies during evolution, and changes it's form and stays visible to the human eye to not upset it's trainer? Because I mean, you have to evolve it with friendship. And it was too loyal to part with you. Don't quote me on this, though.

    I really enjoyed your video and my inner mythology nut came out, so I hope you don't mind the ramble! I am really glad you looked into the darker side of fairy types and the lore behind them because it's honestly one of the most fun parts of fairies in mythology too! From beings like the People of Danu (Tuatha De Dannan) in Ireland to the creatures like Kelpies and Will-O'-The-Wisps, fairy lore is rich with beings of good, tricky, and flat out evil. Its good to see someone highlight that darker side, where everyone seems to focus on the cuteness and light.
    Faries, fair folk, little people, and fae folk are a type of mythological group. Most people when they think Fairy are thinking Sidhe (pronounced "shee") are Irish, or the Persian Peri, which are often portrayed as fallen angels, though generally light. There is a dark side of fairy lore, and it's not all cute and happy, though some of it is! My dream is to see a fairy dark type based on the cu sith or black dog

    Actually "fairies" were first called, "the fae" they existed in celtic myths as mischievous creatures. They came in all sorts of sizes but my fave are the ones people often call, "elves" they' have long hair pointy ears and are tall and are very beautiful, they're not elves though they were called, the fae first hand. These creatures motivations are some what based on where they are. In irish mythology they were more hardcore. Taking babies and replacing them with changelings using spirits and the faces of the dead to fool people and so forth. The welsh believed they were more beinin and weird. Like showing you to a loved one before they died at night kinda in a sleepwalking form. They did turn somewhat demonic when christianity came to their shores.

      The words fairy and fay come from an old French word fee, which is a woman who can use magic, the word was adopted by the English and eventually was used to refer to all things magical or enchanted. Most of the beings referred to as fairies in modern times have routes in Gaelic and Scandinavian mythologies, elves and gnomes being examples from Scandinavia, but in Gaelic mythology there are beings known as the Sídhe (shee) in Ireland or Sith in Scotland, which is an inclusive group of different monsters and gods. Christianity did pretty much demonise all of them though!

      Dullahan (or Dulahan) is also basically a Celtic version of the grim reaper if I remember right. Goblins are also considered a type of fae.
      The fae folk's "pranks" aren't always harmless by the way. Some involve kidnappings and stuff of that nature.

      +TraciPeteyforlife Yeah the fair folk were originally I think based off of legends of a Celtic traveling tribe called the Tuatha De Dannu, the people of the goddess Dannu. It's just a harmless pagan traditional folk belief labeled evil by Christians in medieval Europe.

      Rachael Lefler The Fae have deep roots in Europe in general, mostly Scotland, Ireland, and England (Where as I understand it the Celts had several tribes though not 100%) so they probably started with the celts and traveled around Europe.
      I would remember hearing them not being labeled evil but strange creatures that should be avoided like a dangerous animal.

    Fairies have a complex history. It's actually a really good type because it taps into both Eastern and Western lore.
    The modern word "fairy" derives from Early Modern English "faërie" (cf. Edmund Spenser's "The Faërie Queen"). However, "faërie" refers to a place -- the realm of its denizens, the fae. The word "fae" gives us the modern English adjectives "fay" and "fey" -- think about that the next time you watch Tina Fey perform! -- and it was also a synonym for "elf".
    While a lot of people might think of elves in the Tolkien sense, in traditional Germanic lore, elves are actually impish tricksters. Rowling's house-elves are another realization of fokelore elves, as is Terry Pratchett's very dark interpretation of elves (read "Lords and Ladies" when you get a chance; if you're really interested, Pratchett also published, just before his death, a rather thick book detailing the source material for elements he incorporated into the Discworld). Oberon and Titania in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer's Night's Dream" are also elves; another legend especially in writing lore is that he wrote the play specifically to appease them -- Neil Gaiman once wrote a Sandman story based around this legend. In Romance lore, fairies and elves are also extensions of the ancient Roman concept of the lars, that is, a god of the place.
    This is a truly ancient concept and one that is found both in every Indo-European mythology (Greek, Roman, Celtic, Germanic/Norse, Slavic, Persian, Hindu) and in Shinto, as well as a broad set of other sources -- such as most Native American mythologies. The idea is that every place, every river and meadow and clearing and village and homestead and, well, everything you can point to on a map, really, has its own spirit associated with it. It makes an appearance in the Iliad, the oldest work in the entire Western tradition, where the very god of the river Scamander opposes Achilles. It is, in short, a concept that was already old when civilization was new.
    However, at this point, we can see the linkage with demons. (And with genies! The word "djinn" is derived from the Persian word for "spirit", which is cognate with Sanskrit for"god" and the English word "divine" -- yep). This is because spirits of place include a wide variety of spirits known as "nature spirits" -- fauns, satyrs, nymphs, that sort of thing. These were co-opted by very early Christianity as "demons" -- this is why conceptions of Satan through the ages are strikingly similar to Pan, an ancient Greek nature god: both are developed from the faun, a nature spirit that was half man and half goat. Many other demons followed this mold.
    This also means that a Pokémon based on Beelzebub (literally: "Lord of the Flies") can be every bit as Fairy-type as one based on, say, Ganga (goddess of the Ganges in Hindu tradition) or Amaterasu (a major deity in Shinto) ... as well as literally thousands of other applications. It also implies there are some deep in-universe interlinkages between the Fairy, Psychic, Dark, and Ghost types. But, ultimately, it does not tell us at all about why the Dragon type can't affect the Fairy type at all.

  • @karlwightman6344
    @karlwightman6344 8 років тому +1

    The fact that they're weak to steel in Pokemon is actually really telling of where the inspiration for the typing as a whole came from. Celtic legends describe them often as being incredibly beautiful, and have tremendous power, but more often than not in many stories they're described as tricksters, or make cruel bargains with humans simply because they could. (Seriously look up some of that shit, its ridiculous) It usually came down to power, or love. Someones wife was dead and they needed the fairy to revive them, or someone unimportant wanted to be recognised (blah blah blah, you get the idea) so they made a deal with the fairy who would grant their wish, but usually at a price.
    Bearing in mind that those are just the "nice" fairies, some of them were straight up messed in the brain.
    Anyway, the typing thing. Fairies in the stories would often send mortals on a quest to kill things like Dragons purely for amusement sake. Like it was just the sort of mythological food chain Mortal

    Sidhe is pronounced like the english word she. Also, I consider the fairy typing to equate with folklore more than anything. The futakuchi onna isn't really a demon either. That's a gross misunderstanding of the tale. It's meant to be a cautionary tale against greed. She did no deception at all. Some folklore considers the fae to be a sort of half-fallen angel. A group that sided neither with Michael nor Lucifer in the great betrayal and therefore were kicked out of heaven but not banished to hell. As punishment, they were cursed to be ambivalent towards anything that didn't lead to their own gain. I personally like the prechristian folklore the most. Generally they're just depicted as supernatural beings of all sorts. Some are good and some are evil. Mostly, they're simply mischievous.

    Cool video! For everyday objects, like the keys, I don't think it matters how they are typed as far as their origin goes. I've heard of an old oriental legend that says everyday objects like (keys) can come to life after they reach 100 years old. I've often wondered if this legend isn't behind some of the more odd Pokemon like keys, swords, spinning electrical gears, exc.

    Yeah, I kinda hate how Disney and the like have twisted the concept of fairies. I've been reading some novels recently, one of which is a realistic take on magic, the supernatural and folklore. They actually reference things in real life folk-lore like fairies. Fairies from real-life folklore are messed up, they are nothing like little people with wings that grant wishes, they are said to be mischevious little monsters. They would play pranks on people, steal memories and would kill people for the laughs, but not out of malice. There was also the myth of changelings, specifically in Ireland/Wales sort of area. The fairies would kidnap children and replace them with a lookalike fairy called a changeling. Real fairies: not suitable for kids.

    Just the other day I made a correlation between fairy type pokemon and the creatures from the fairyland of the Discworld (mostly these two novels: "Lords and Ladies" and "The Wee Free Men"), by Terry Pratchett. In that series, the creatures from fairyland are evil (which matches almost everything said in this video) and apart from that, any object made from iron counters these creature's magic powers. That mirrors the fact that fairy type pokemon are weak against steel type attacks. Pretty interesting... although I think it's just a big coincidence.
