So true Jacob! I always say: “it doesn’t matter which language you learn - although if you want to get really good start in assembly for a few months and do some basic things, then meant C” but generally when you learn one language well and you firmly understand the foundations (hence assembly and or C), you’ll learn any other language on the job. It’s like learning music. It doesn’t matter which instrument you use. The music foundation is the same. Even horn players that have a boring monopolic instrument learn about chords.
My life as a work from home software engineer of 15 years: 1) wake up 7 am, light breakfast 2) Feed chickens and dog 3) check email 4) 9am standup 5) coding until 11am 6) lunch and hot tub 7) 12-3 mostly coding, meetings 8) 3-4 workout or take my husky on a hike 9) Done with work most days, but occasionally have to do some later hours work 10) evenings currently finishing up master's degree in CS specializing in machine learning....after I finish that in December on to an MBA Weekends: hobbies, going out to eat, working in my woodshop. I only work after hours if I choose to. Never on weekends.
I'm a full-time paramedic working 86+ hours a week. I have to find something I can support my family of 5 with and actually see them. I do enjoy coding and the challenges. I just have to make the jump and the aspect of getting laid off is scary.
I am SO excited to have found a kiwi software engineer's channel! Sometimes it is hard to relate to the mostly American vlogs, nice to see someone in my own environment 😊 I am finishing up my 2nd/last year of a software dev diploma.
Most of the day in the life videos shows half the work you do and go hangout or sleep BUT you did so much work which I really enjoyed and it was just 12:15 ish in the afternoon when you ended! 😂 Really like these types of videos! Hats off! I hope you keep making more of these! 👍
I just got a software engineer job. It's 100% work from home. But it's US based so I have to work from 10PM to 7AM. But no problem for me. I only have less than 2 years of experience. I'm grateful that I have a job!
This is the first vid I have seen from you. I am in love with your house just from what I have seen. If you havent already I would love to see a little tour or like how much your rent is or something. I just subscribed!
For your home theater PC I would recommend getting a Logitech K400. It's a wireless keyboard with built in touchpad. I've used one for years to remote control both my PC and/or HTPC and it works great. It's nice having the touchpad on it so you don't have to use a dedicated mouse or controller with it. But obviously you would still want the controller for playing games.
To solve your keyboard Bluetooth issue you can connect to one device with 2.4ghz, and the other device with 5.0ghz, if your device is capable of both. I had the same problem and ended up getting a keyboard that could switch between the two.
What are the odds I watch this video randomly, I am from Florida and we just got hit by massive hurricane a week ago and now we are also about to get hit by another massive hurricane, exactly how you said in this video haha! I am working to become a software engineer, hopefully I will land my first job in about a year or so! Great video!
the solution for your keyboard on the tv is to buy a keyboard with a touchpad built in so you can control the PC. and you can always keep the keyboard next to your couch.
Hey! I'm a software developer too WFH 100%. I've been suscribed since you got less than 500 subs. I've also got a pug that makes me company everyday, so I love Hermy's appearences in your videos🐶. You've already got a fan here👍
I think your keyboard can have multiple devices. My Keychron can have three. Knowing all models aren't the same but maybe lookup keychron shortcuts for your model.
Hey Jacob! If you get the chance can you make a video on your journey to being a software engineer? I really enjoy the content and I’m aspiring to become a software engineer as well and was surprised when you said you didn’t go to school. Thanks for the content and keep them coming you’re very inspirational!
I was in full screen and didn''t notice the 11min go by so fast 😂. Nice video by the way. I really wanted to know how the life of a Software Enginner is like
I have worked in higher education for 10+ years and now I'm thinking about changing careers. Recently, I've been getting into the idea of becoming a software engineer and your channel has certainly helped. I'd really like connect with you, if you are open. Also, I'm obsessed with your pug. I had a pub a couple years past. His name was Murphy. I loved the lil guy.
Hey jacob! Can you please tell me the description of the job you currently have when they were hiring? It looks great and I would try to find something similar. I too am a web developer but my first job kind of sucks which I got from college. I want to have a work life balance like you have so if you could tell me that it would really be helpful. Thanks!
Intermediate software engineer. Most of the work I’m doing is front end work but slowly moving into full stack. Focusing in JavaScript, typescript stacks 😁
I've just recently discovered your channel and I have to say, I'm a huge fan already! The editing, lifestyle and the way you narrate thru your videos (whether it be reviewing products or just giving your opinion and advice on things) is amazing and such a vibe! Nicely done Jacob! I am curious on what your option is on "Swift Playgrounds" and how well of an app it is to get started in iOS Development (which is what I want to focus on and make my career out of). Do you code in Swift too? Or do you use other languages? Keep up the great work tho!
It's kind of relieving to hear that someone got a software engineering career without a degree. But it makes me wonder how much harder (or if it's even possible) to land a solid career/pay in this industry without a degree. Anybody got any thoughts on this?
Yup! I’ve never been asked for a degree or certification during my interviews. The one thing I didn’t learn that I should have focused as well when I first started was data structures and algorithms - that was my downfall during my first few. Eventually I nailed it down and got two offers but yeah - no degree!
I am also coding on a macbook, but i see you are using a windows keyboard? How is the interaction with a windows keyboard and a mac? And what keyboard are you using? :) Love the content. xD
