Curved Air are the most underrated band of the early 70s.

Of all the competition (Gentle Giant, Jade Warrior, Atomic Rooster, etc.)?

"Metamorphosis" is one of best prog epics. Better than anything Jobson did in Roxy Music or UK.

Fire, fleet and candleleet are lyrics from the folksong The Lyke-Wake Dirge. Pentangle sing it on their "Basket of Light" album. Malicorne also use it on their album Les Cathedrales dear L'Industrie.

Interesting. Wiki says "The song tells of the soul's travel, and the hazards it faces, on its way from earth to purgatory." So it relates to my interpretation of "Sarah's Concern" (though I only got the sacrificial ritual part).

Yes, the corpse or lyke, in the old dialect is watched over at the wake. What is so unusual about the dirge is that the entrance to purgatory appears to be sited specifically on Whinney Moor above Wakefield in Yorkshire. I suppose this bleak location had folkloric appeal that blended with religion and superstition. The Greeks and Romans also had specific locations said to be entrances to the underworld. This all indicates how bands were influenced by others and the way folk music and folk custom entered their hinterland. Sonja herself was keen on that genre and its cultural elements.

For years, the only thing anyone said about this band was that Stewart Copeland was their drummer. I'm glad they now get the recognition they deserve.
