    My laptop can run Black Ops 4, yet can't seem to manage FL when loaded up with VSTs to the point I had to seek out this video. Turning up the buffering worked wonders, I don't record my piano rolls live and instead prefer to draw it up, so it's a perfect quick fix for me.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  5 років тому +2

      Games relies heavily on your video card (GPU) while music production relies entirely on the CPU. Increasing the buffer will give your CPU some more breathing room. :)

      Glad to hear that it worked out! I know exactly how frustrating that is. When you have a good flow going on, and then suddenly you're unnable to keep on working due to technical limitations..
      You'll be pleased to hear that Image-Line is planning on making the freezing process a lot faster / simpler in future versions. :)

    Holyyyy shit you just made my life so much easier. Was wondering why my CPU gauge would jump from 10 to 80 and hang at 80 for several seconds after playing notes. I had no idea that every single serum patch I had loaded was running well after it was triggered due to the upward compression pulling noise up. Thank you so much!

    I use a gaming laptop with 7th gen core i7 processor and my CPU bar in fl studio doesn't go past 30%. After working on a collab with another Producer, my processor tab went to the roof after loading two or more kontakt libraries. Turned out "allow threaded processing" was turned off as a result of the settings in the project I worked on. This video helped. Thanks a lot man. Really appreciate.

    Enabling smart disable is what did it for me, thanks a lot :p
    One thing to note about using smart disable though is that if you're using Fruity LSD in any of your mixer tracks, you'll have to click the arrow in the top left of the LSD window and untick smart disable because it's a generator that isn't directly linked to a piano roll, and so it forever mutes it.

    Everything was going so well with my DAW until I started playing the electric guitar and adding vocals all with mutiple effects to write songs, and started using Omnisphere 2. I 've got an i5-2.8ghz and was looking for a new computer yesterday! and stumbled upon this 😀 a lot of the settings were as on the video, then looked at the ppq settings on the projects that were really struggling with playback, lowed the ppq to 24 and playback resumed normally! On these songs they are mostly audio clips of the guitar/vocals with Kontakt doing the bass guitar and FPC the drums, so not overly reliant on precise ppq, so if you've doing this type of production try the ppq! Thanks so much for this video, helped a lot!

    I did these besides the obvious in FL Studio: undervolted the CPU, changed the thermal paste, cleaned the CPU fan, used Windows debloater script from Github.
    The undervolt alone improved perfomance by a lot, the debloater script removes garbage software from Windows and maybe can significantly reduce system latency.

  • @FireWalkMusic

    I've included a FREE download in the description!
    Download the "Core Parking Manager" (for windows). This will turn off core parking and ensure that your CPU runs at full speed all the time. If the CPU is throttling up and down constantly it can cause lag. :)

    Amen
    Things found useful:
    - ppq can have a huge impact (has a huge impact for me). If you're using MIDI mainly, you don't need higher than the minimum, which is 24.
    - Asio4all seems pretty much the same CPU-wise, but gives a lower latency than FL Studio ASIO.
    - Always use smart disable
    - high performance mode
    - close all GUI windows (F12) in FL; moving around and having multiple plugin windows open in FL can increase CPU by 15 % when running hot already!! Can make a huge difference; for example, moving around a lot, having tons of windows open -> causes going over 100% , when CPU is already hot

    I've been trying to figure out the best way to optimize CPU Usage for weeks now and couldn't find any straight forward answers - I didn't realize that my CPU problems were coming from putting a strain on a single core. Thank you so much for making this video and explaining about how routing several plugins and grouping them into busses affects multi-processing. I have a question - what if 10 different mixer tracks use a send for Reverb ? Does those tracks get processed by a single core then ? I don't understand how do people use busses in general (for leads, bass etc) ?

  • @ryand24able

    Awesome thank you for the video. I thought it was very well put together which made it super easy to retain the information, very concise. I have to say the most prevalent issue with online education or instruction is a tendency to over complicate the curriculum and even sometimes go way of topic : ). Not the case here . Well done ,I’m subscribed!

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  6 років тому +1

      Indeed! That's the very reason I started making these tutorials in the first place. A friend of mine was struggling to learn music production. He watched countless tutorials but was always left confused, as many tended to drift off topic as you say, and make the video longer and more complicated than it had to be. I ended up making a few videos specifically for him, trying to break everything down and make it as short and simple as possible. And that's how it all started. I'm glad to see that people still find these videos helpful! It's what motivates me to make more videos like this :)

  • @anastasialaser
    @anastasialaser 2 роки тому +1

    Also after watching your 'the best computer for music production' 👍 it made me think of core tempratures and inspired me to get a quality (almost silent) KLIM coolpad as I'm using a laptop, realizing how warm the laptop gets when working some projects, it's seem to reduce the CPU load by a further 5-15% Having an ice cold laptop will also help to keep those core tempratures down! 😁 I would recommend anyone who is struggling to watch that video as well.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  2 роки тому

      Thanks, glad you found the videos helpful. Heat is definitely a problem. When the temperature goes up during heavy load, the cpu speed will throttle down to keep temperatures in check, so ensuring good ventilation will help boost performance. 😀

    Smart Disable works great on most plugins for me. But not all. Especially Native Instruments Raum VST doesn't work well with the function enabled. Long reverbs get cut off too early for example.
    I use this function only when work is still in progress. When rendering I mostly turn the option off, just to be sure.

    My problem was that when I would run more than 2 Nexus instances at a time, the CPU would spike and overload and crackle and get hung up. But when I did the thing you said, about going into nexus and making sure the "Allow Threaded Processing" was clicked on. I did that and it works perfectly now. I tried running 6 to 7 instances of Nexus and no issues. Man I thought I was shit out of luck, but these tips fixed everything.

      Smart Disable works good on Nexus. Check the box Smart Disable in the Audio Settings (this turns the general option on in FL Studio) and in the Nexus instance, click on the dropdown menu in the upper left and select Smart Disable (this makes this instance of Nexus make use of the Smart Disable function).

My CPU never go above 20% and i still can't play midi decently on my 2 favourite DAW's. Certain plugins just crackling when i play them. I'm so tired of computers

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  6 років тому +1

      I know the feeling. What kind of genre do you produce? And what's your buffer settings? are you using the asio drivers that came with your sound card? I've found that 250 - max 512 samples is working well for me. Anything above that and the lag becomes too prominent when playing live. Anything bellow 250 will waste a lot of cpu power while not providing any noticable in latency.

    • @flyingisland7583
      @flyingisland7583 6 років тому +2

      Hi,
      I'm a "Hip-Hop/Jazz/Soul/Neo-Soul "producer"". Usualy i'm start playing with a hi-hat/snare/kick and i can play my pianos, synths or bass with 128-256 buffer size value. Problems comes when the projects become bigger (of course), sometimes i just add a powefull synth on a project and i have too increase the buffer size (somtimes the max buffer wasn't enough for project with not hat much intruments and effects), i'am allergic to music created with the mousse, so it's become hard to maintain a decent latency (i recently had to admit that's 512mps/12ms and over was THE reason i felt/feel unconfortable with playing midi on pc)
      I used to asio4all but i don't see a big difference between it and the recent version of FL Studio asio, or my Magix Low latency asio... I have a regular Cakewalk/Roland (i have both) UA-25 EX soundcard, i know it's the weak point of my setting but can he affect my buffer problem so bad?
      BY THE WAY THIS VIDEO SHOW ME TRICKS I DIDN'T KNOW AND I FEEL MORE CONFORABLE SINCE I MADE THOSE SETTINGS YESTERDAY! THANKS!!!
      But i have a problem with the screen lagging/ not showing in real time what i heard due to one modificaton i did: i'm going to work on it tonigth: any idea please?

      Sorry last question: How can the task manager tells me my processor is 5% and i have those buffer problems? I asked this question so many times since my new configuration

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  6 років тому +2

      I see. The FL Studio asio is kind of a hybrid driver, which will allow you to watch youtube and such while at the same time using FL Studio. Asio4all, and the driver that came with your sound card (if you have one) will be the best bet since they take 100% control of the soundcard, and therefore can have direct access to it with no delay. Some times an internal soundcard can be the culprit.
      Regarding what you see vs what you hear not being in sync, try changing to "mixer" instead of driver, if that's what it on. Ideally it should be hybrid, but if you set it to Mixer then it SHOULD be in sync.

      R01F mine is 8gb ram and works ok. You recommend me to upgrade ram? Is it a hassle to upgrade or easy?

      @@alanfernandez2598 yeah you should if u have an available empty ram slot in your laptop. with 16 gb you'll be able to open more chrome tabs/apps/vst's without occasional stuttering that happens with 8. before upgrade just check what type of ram u have and buy one with similar specs so it works in dual mode. upgrading is easy, just unscrew the bottom of the laptop, plug stick in slot, screw it back.

      Do you use a onboard sound device or an external USB unit like for example a Focusrite Scarlett? Using onboard sound devices never worked for me. Latency was always too high, even with ASIO drivers, and when lowering the latency the sound stuttering was horrible. Buying an external audio device with good ASIO support was the biggest step forward in my case. No more sky high latencies and good response. Even the sound quality is WAY better than an onboard cheap ass soundchip. It wil cost you a 100 bucks, but you get so much in return for it. Buy one with external MIDI on the back, so if you don't use that for now, you are free to use them in the future.
      Focusrite Scarlett has also pretty okay pre amplifiers for your microphone if you need it. I own the Scarlett 2i4 second generation myself and it works like a charm.
