  • Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained.
As requested, today we’ll be exploring District 9, the 2009 sci-fi thriller directed by Neill Blomkamp, based on his 2005 short film “Alive in Joburg”.
Starring Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, Vanessa Haywood and David James, the film documents humanity’s first contact with extra-terrestrials. When a large alien vessel enters our atmosphere and begins hovering above Johannesburg, the world waited in awe, but nothing happened for three months.
With the ship simply hovering over the city, South African authorities decided to cut their way into the spacecraft on June 3rd, 1982. Although the technology on board was astounding, the condition of the aliens was appalling. Having run out of food, water and medical supplies long ago, all of the creatures (revealed to be workers) were malnourished, aimless, and living in squalor.
Under tremendous international pressure, the South African government ferried the 1.8 million non-humans to a temporary refugee camp. Called District 9, the camp was composed of a number of shacks built for the residency of aliens. Unfortunately, following many riots, a rise in interspecies crime, and several destructive acts by the aliens (referred to as prawns), District 9 quickly turned into a slum.
After 20 years of rising conflict between humans and the aliens, the government relented to public pressure, deciding to move district 9 away from Johannesburg to a remote location. To aid in the forced eviction of 1.8 million nonhumans from their sanctuary, South Africa turned to a private corporation. Founded in 1965 as a manufacturing company, within two decades they expanded worldwide, rebranding themself as Multi-National United the same year the aliens arrived.
Initially put in charge to contain the newly arrived prawns, MNU spread into numerous industries and quickly became the world's second largest weapons manufacturer. Within years, the company was involved in everything from telecommunications to nanotechnology. Of course, it was their involvement in the privatization of police services that made them so useful to the government. As the exclusive provider of law enforcement services in Johannesburg, Multi-National United operated with a large contingent of mercenaries.
Partially presented in a found footage format, featuring interviews, news clips and security footage, District 9 is rife with themes of xenophobia, social segregation, and what it means to be human.

Given human nature, I highly doubt we would act any differently. We would say welcome but demand payment in some way or another for allowing them to stay. And the pay would be in tech. And we all know how greedy humans can become when something is kept at an arms reach.

Although that does raise the possibility that Christoper Johnson killed the rest of the leader caste for some reason. Yeah, I feel a sequel would be anti-climactic. The chances are in three years human tech will not have advanced enough to deal with the prawns. As a result, if even a few hundred prawn soldiers show up with exo-suits it is not going to be a good day for humanity short of some deus ex machina. If humanity is lucky the prawns don't show back up vengeful, but just come to pick up their people, and if humanity is smart they let them and don't interfere. It would be interesting to get some questions answered about the background of the prawns and what went wrong on their ship's journey, but at the same time, I think the film stands pretty well on its own as an allegory for man's inhumanity to man made slightly less uncomfortable by it being another species. One could have easily switched this to a tale of how many societies treat minorities or the underprivileged in the sprawling slums in their cities. Ironically, humanity is lucky that something messed up the prawns while in route as with their tech humanity likely would have played the Native Americans trying to cope with the Europeans showing up in the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Where they subjugate or exterminator the primitives that occupy the land they want.

@@filmcomicsexplained I wish they had flipped the aliens to be an allegory for "white people", actually. It would have made more sense since it's in South Africa. Black people feel right at home, it's the Europeans that tries to terraform indigenous environments.
I actually think that if Don't Worry, Darling 2022 had any common sense the twist would have been that they are in Orania in South Africa, an entirely white town where they CHOSE to emulate the 1950's ideal like Apartheid. It's irony would be that it's a bunch of white invaders coming into a foreign country trying to create an exclusionary community in an indigenous country when they could essentially just go back to Europe or live somewhere else.

I remember it was summer right before my junior year of high school when this came out, and I heard almost nothing about it, and nobody seemed to like it much. I forgot exactly when _I_ saw it (it must have been years later) but when I did, I had a nerdgasm. I'm a sucker for alien-human interaction and how alien life and technology could be so vastly different, and this movie hit the spot. The enormous ship, the excellent alien design, the vastly different, yet within reason weapons.
