The end of an era ... The Wentworth ladies had no idea that as nasty and spiteful as Vera was, she was nowhere near being “the meanest screw to ever walk the Earth”. Lizzie had no idea how right she was about “better the devil you know”.
Vera, beautifully played by actress Fiona Spence, and played not on just one level, but layers, deep down a very kind hearted person, who found it difficult to show her softer side, all down to Vera's mother who put her down all the time, despite this Vera looked after my sick mother, foresaking her own chance of happiness. You can see despite the stern appreance of the character Vera, in reality what a beautiful actress Fiona Spence was. Shelia Florance (Lizzie Birdsworth) was another wonderful actress and superb comedy timing and Florance was superb at switching from comedy to the other side of the coin tragedy. Some wonderful actors have passed through 'Prisoner Cell Block H', no wonder the soap is still as popular today. The end of episode 4 concludes with the closing credits and some clever shots of Meg breaking down after the death of her husband, also this episode 4 concludes with a special and very beautiful arrangement of the theme. I often wonder if the character of Meg was named after Meg Richardson in Reg Watson's UK soap 'Crossroads'?
When that final song plays and the violins swell...it is so emotional!! Does anyone else bawl their eyes out like me?! Lol This show was amazing because lots of the characters were tough and unlikable...but deep down they were big softies...like most people in real life...
Some brilliant foreshadowing here. Vera knowing that she’ll eventually get Bea down at Barnhurst one day, and Lizzie’s ‘better the devil you know’ line…just 64 short episodes from now would prove that so very right
Vera did care about Lizzie and occassionly vice versa. A pity we won't be able to see any of their moments of kindness to each other anymore . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it . From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it .
Sheila Florance (Lizzie) actually lived with Fiona Spence (Vinegar Tits) in real life - I think it was, for Sheila, a pièd-a-térre for work, as she lived too far away to have to commute - something I read somewhere - but don’t ask, as I can’t remember where I read it!
Fiona Spence was a very clever actress, able to play and look so different in the part of Vera, in reality a very beautiful looking actress. That is the sign of a good actress.
Oh Vera Bennett......this just goes to show how she nailed this character she had this hard exterior about her but really deep down she was very vulnerable and a tragic character but her exterior affected the prisoners. very very sad I often feel like her at my job
B*TCH also means Being In Total Control Of Herself. You would think she'd be happy after leaving for a New Prison but she didn't get her Happily Ever After. I loved the Reminiscing Part on The DVD.
I loved Vera she could be bitter and hard but also a fragile side. Not as nasty and a bit less Panto Panto Villain than the freak. Lizzie hit it on the nail saying 'better the devil you know ' before the freak arrival.
I don't remember seeing this, but I might have done. Vera could be a real hard ass, she was strict, but she wasn't sadistic. I saw enough episodes to know that she was just lonely. They centred on her character more in depth in a few episodes as I recall. She goes out one night to a bar and makes a bit of a fool of herself. She was just lonely. Sadly, I can identify with that so easily.
Yeah I hated to see Vera the series she kept prisons in place and she kept the freak at Bay but deep down you could see the other side she wasn't a bad human being
It's a shame that we never saw Vera again. I'm sure she loved seeing Bea again. lol Though I wonder if they had come to have a mutual respect? Knowing their luck it would've been the day before or the day of the fire at Barnhurst where Bea basically died a hero.
They don't make great shows like this anymore. This show always moved me especially when Franky was killed. This show was bold by killing off their best characters for good.
I think prisoner cell block h was so good especially the first 300 episodes I've watched every single episode much better than the UK crappy Wentworth Bea Smith is b Smith via is Vera and the freak is the freak absolutely fantastic loved every single episode especially the first 300 episodes with The originals like Bea Smith Franky Doyle Lizzie birdsworth Doreen Burns and a teddy bear xx

This was the *golden era* for me watching her leave while taping it at 5am on channel 5 as a 14 year old boy saying goodbye to *vinegar*

Vera was my favourite character. And when compared to The Freak she wasn't so bad.
Vera was a bit of a bitch but at least she wasn't bent like The Freak.
Agreed! Vera was a bitch but in no way was she as bad as Ferguson. I like Vera
That's right that was a sad ending for Vera she could have kept the

I just came here, because I'm at 302 now and still miss Vera. I think she's been my favourite character so far.
What a sad ending for a great character ♥️
Little did these girls know that the meanest screw to walk the earth was just around the corner!
Why who comes next?? I haven't got that far yet, I'm only on episode 114.
I just got to she who must not be named a few days ago. Yeah, I'm sure they'd gladly switch her to get Vera back any day.
Meg was my favorite but I always felt sad about Vera. underneath that hard exterior there was an inexplicable and devastating loneliness .
powell?
Carlene Boulden they mean the freak

Lizzie and Vera’s relationship. Im not crying, you’re crying.
We both are, ☺.
Along with Judy they were my three favourite characters.
I met Fiona Spence in the UK. Nice lady.

I seriously miss Vera, I'm up to 480 and I can't believe most of the classic characters are gone now.... I hope Ferguson doesn't leave anytime soon.
watch WENTWORTH and explore Vera and Ferguson in more depth!
Just Judy and Meg Morris
5:20 - 5:26 That was gold! One last "I'm quite capable of looking after myself, thank you very much".
What a fine actress.
Am I the only one that thought Vera was actually quite attractive?.
Especially with her hair down
Fiona Spence was a very clever actress, able to play and look so different in the part of Vera, in reality a very beautiful looking actress. That is the sign of a good actress.
Yes but she was made ugly and early prototype for the freak
Oh Vera Bennett......this just goes to show how she nailed this character she had this hard exterior about her but really deep down she was very vulnerable and a tragic character but her exterior affected the prisoners. very very sad I often feel like her at my job
"Better the devil you know".
Damn right.
I can’t believe you missed your own farewell party Vera! How vinegar of you
Man I love Vera Bennett. A well fleshed-out character thanks to great writing and a great actress. Quality show. *Sigh*

What a happy but very sad scene quote bea 'the smell of vinegar has gone'

They should do a spin off of Bea at Barnhurst.
They don't make great shows like this anymore. This show always moved me especially when Franky was killed. This show was bold by killing off their best characters for good.
Smith? So Smith made it to the end, in the original version?
If they only who was coming...
Bye bye Vera
This lot need Joan to sort them out.
Vera retired from her job in 2010 and for almost two years, she's been an avid player of Mario Kart Tour.
