- Hi everyone! Do you mostly use your Insignia or Toshiba Fire Edition TV to watch Cable TV or DirecTV and wish that you could have it power on directly to the HDMI input that your set-top box is connected to instead of the Fire TV home page? In this video, I will show you how to set your Insignia or Toshiba Fire Edition TV to power on the HDMI input each time.

Thank you so much. Helped me set my elderly mother’s TV. This will save me from running down to her house every time she wants to turn on the tv now!😁
You are welcome! Now you only have to go if there's an update or power outage.
I bought one of these for my grandma (who is 90 and has dementia...) thinking it would be simple and straightforward. She was using 2 controllers with her old and very small TV for years and had to call me over all the time just to get it switched over to HDMI. Boy was I sorely mistaken. Now I REALLY wish I had just gotten her the cheaper Westinghouse non-smart TV. All I wanted was a proper HDMI-CEC function, to reduce it to one controller and automatically power on and switch to her cable box when she pressed the TV power button 😩 😢. I would definitely not buy this TV for myself even, now that I know how ridiculously complicated they made it.
This is exactly what I needed! Same situation with an older person who was confused by the inputs. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome. Glad to hear it was helpful!
Amazing!!! Spent 1/2 hour showing my mom how to get to HDMI prior to connecting to cable tv. Drew diagrams, had her practice. Knew she would just never use the Insignia tv i bought her after her old tube SD tv from 1975 finally died. Thank you thank you thank you.
You are very welcome!
THANK YOU! Allowed my 100yr young mom use her big Flipper remote and not have to TRY to figure out how to use two remotes to get out of HDMI 2👍👍👍❤
You are welcome! Glad I could help!
Thank you so much! Finally someone that knows what he is talking about.
Thank you. I appreciate that!
Lifesaver , my elderly mom was getting annoyed at me about tv not just turning in to her show
Happy to hear I was able to help.
Well done and straight to the point.
Thank you!
This solved my greatest frustration with the Fire TV with many users in a common area of an apartment building. THANK YOU
You're welcome! Glad I could be of help!
Using the tv as a secondary computer monitor, thank you, this helped fix the annoyance of having to cycle over to hdmi one before the tv started blaring ads for upcoming shows
You're welcome! Glad I could help.
Thank you DJ!!! This is exactly what I was wondering if it was possible. I got my parents a 55 in Insignia TV last month and all they use it is to watch cable TV, but they hated it just because of that reason! Now, I'm hoping that changing it to that last input setting, they will be happy that they won't have to keep on changing inputs each time they want to watch TV and I won't have to return it and get another non-Fire Edition TV! You the man! Always great informative and helpful videos! Keep them coming DJ!
Thank you Ed! Hopefully this will work well for them and save you from returning it and getting another one!
I'm in the same boat. Bought an Insignia FireTV for my 90 yr old grandmother, thinking surely it would be easy to just have it power on to her cable box when she pressed the power button. She does like it, but hates that it's so ridiculously complicated just to get to her cable box input. I hate it. My mom hates it lmao. Feel like it's one of the worst purchases I have ever made.
I did learn though that you can hold the menu button to get to the input selection menu quickly. And enabling HDMI CEC and/or ARC/eARC in the "Display & Sounds" menu might also provide automatic power on input functionality. Not sure if the HDMI cord needs to be in the ARC port in order for this to work correctly...
I'm doing some quite extensive research on this stupid TV so I can hopefully get it working how I assumed it would by default once and for all.
Hi DJ,
As a further improvement, plug the cable box into HDMI 1. This is the ACR (Audio Return Channel) connection. If you use the HDMI ARC port, then the volume control on then Amazon Fire remote control will control the TV set. It's all built in, you just have to use it.
I agree with all the gratitude you received. Well done.
Thank you!
So glad I finally got this figured out. I'm only in my early 30s, so obviously I was perfectly capable of navigating through the menu each time, but it was just so ridiculous that I had to do it in the first place. What a waste of time when mostly I'm just flicking on my TV to mirror my PC so I can see the screens from more angles as I work around the house. 2 monitors, a projector, and a TV, and the only one that required setup every time was the TV. Smh
That is one thing I didn't like about this TV.
DJ... You just made my Christmas list! Thank you!!!!!
You are very welcome!
Excellent, and thank you very much for this tutorial. I just spent 3 hours setting up an Insignia Fire TV for my mom, who is 89 years old and watches mostly cable channels, and occasionally a DVD. It would be very nice to have her TV come up on HDMI 1 where her cable is connected. I like finding a helpful video that applies exactly to my situation like this one does.
You are very welcome! Now, if only Amazon saw this video and realized that they should make this a permanent solution not just a fix, that would be awesome! We can only hope!
@@DJsTutorials I looked through the menus under setup (gear thing) assuming that there would be some way to set which input is selected at power-on, but I didn't go deep enough. I The location of the item you demonstrated here is awkward and not really intuitive - I would expect it to be near the A/V preferences like brightness, color balance, audio controls, etc. I suspect that Amazon deliberately buried the default input selection so that people would continue to see all of their marketing stuff on the Fire home screen.
Great tip for my new Insignia TV. Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome!
This worked great for me setting up my (80) year-old parents Amazon fire tv! Thanks!
Awesome! Glad to hear!
Huge help! Thank you so much. I was gifted a fire tv and prefer my Roku with its remote and Home screen. This makes it so much better.

INSIGNIA All-New 32-inch Class F20 Series Smart HD 720p Fire TV (NS-32F201NA23, 2022 Model)
Excellent job, great video
Thank you! Appreciate it!
Very helpful, appreciate man.
You are welcome!
Very Helpful!
Thank you!
Excellent video!!! Is there a way to use multiple hdmi ports on tv at same time? I'm looking to add soundbar without changing hdmi ports constantly? I really appreciate any input thank you
I am not sure I understand your question. You can only use one HDMI input at a time. Now with that said, the soundbar will be connected to the HDMI ARC port (if available) of your TV which will output the audio from all sources (HDMI, Antenna) so no need to keep changing HDMI ports and it does not need to be powered on to that input unless the soundbar has an HDMI Input and you have something connected to it like an Xbox or Cable box, and you want to power on to that input. Please give me a little more info so I can answer your question better.
Omg thank you! Using these for computer monitors and this was so annoying changing it every time
You are welcome! Glad I could help!
This really helped with a tech aversive but beloved wife’s needs!
Glad to hear I could help!
F****g brilliant!!!! Man that was driving me nuts... Especially now that the home screen has commercials in it. Thanks!

This is coming from a restaurant owner with 15 TVs . You just save me time search for Pairing each HDMI every morning . that is 15 time every morning. thank you
You are welcome! Yes, that is a lot of TVs to do each day! Glad I could help!
Thank you so much for the tip,😅 I use the TV as cheap PC monitor, now I don't have to press so many buttons to switch input!
You're welcome!
THANK YOU SO MUCH KIND SIR
You are very welcome
For a split second I was gonna get pissy about the little intro sequence and background info, but honestly, it's a 3 min video and everything is labelled and bookmarked clearly. Plus, I bet older folks have an easier time following along with a little more context. I cooled my jets and just let the thing play so DJ would get full watch time. It was all perfectly reasonable and on-topic, especially compared to the 10,000 word life story you get before any online recipe, lmao
Still a super helpful tutorial a year later. Thanks, DJ 👍
I try to make my videos for all ages and for people who are not as tech savvy. Some people I know that they skip through a good part of the video when they do know how to get around the Fire Stick and get to the part they want to see. Others need to learn how or why you are doing something so that way they understand what is going on. I appreciate you letting me know what you thought about this video.
Thanks a lot❤❤❤❤
You're welcome
Thank you very much
You are welcome!
Thanks!
Thank you Grapeburger! Much appreciate it!
Thank you.

you da man 00 had to get a new tv for brother with dementia and was wondering how to make it so would not need two remotes -- thanks
You're welcome! I'm glad to hear I was able to help.
THE 🐐
Appreciate it 🙏
Thank You

My 4K max fire tv does it have the settings you refer to. I need my fire tv to start on “most recent HDMI” port
This is only for the Fire Edition TVs. Not for the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. Most TVs will turn on to the last input they were on last. Your TV does not do that?
Thank you! Omg
You're welcome!
Thanks for showing this. However, I have an Xfinity cable box on HDMI1. I paired the Xfinity remote with the Insignia Fire TV and I can use it to power off the tv and control the volume. However, the input button doesn't change the TV's input. Do you know a way to make that work?
No, not that I'm aware of.
@@DJsTutorials ok, thank you.
Thank you
You're welcome.
Another question. I want to connect Amazon FireTV to an (older) DVD player (no HDMI) Do you know what receiver what type of device to use to hook this up? Searching and found options, HDMI - AV (RCA), or (RCA) AV to HDMI converter video audio adapter boxes or the HMDI - AV adapter with the red/white/yellow plugs. I am so confused that I purchased one of each kinds I found not knowing which will work. I was at my parent's home yesterday and spent all day just doing other TV things learned from your channel but never got to this part. ARGH! Can you help?
I would recommend connecting the Fire Stick to the TV, DVD player to the receiver, receiver to the TV (if your TV has RCA inputs - Red, White, Yellow) otherwise you will need an adapter (RCA (R,W,Y) to HDMI). If your receiver has an Optical connection, use that for audio coming from the TV to the receiver. In order for me to recommend specific ways to connect all your devices and equipment, send me an email with some pictures with all the available connections from the TV, Receiver, and DVD player. DJsTutorialsOfficial@gmail.com That way I will know what we are working with and what can be done.
Brilliant thank you
You're welcome!
New question. Now I want to connect Amazon FireTV to an (old) receiver which only has red/white audio cable no HDMI on receiver. Would like the TV sound to play through the receiver's speakers. Searching found to have to use (maybe) and HDMI - AV converter of some sort. Not really sure what to use.
I would not suggest connecting the Fire Stick to the receiver. You will be better off connecting it to the TV and then the TV to the receiver.
Thank you. I bought one of these TV sets, and could not find this setting. Apparently the settings (cog) button on the remote takes you to an entirely different settings screen that does not have this option.
You are welcome! Yes you are correct. If not mistaken, it brings you to the Sound and Picture settings. You must have a newer model. Mine does not have that button on the remote.
Thanks
You're welcome!
Thank you!! Just saved me two hours of driving to my grandmas house whenever she can’t find hdmi1 😂😂
You're welcome. Glad I could help!
What if I want this to default to the xr15 voice remote from Xfinity? That remote is set up correctly because it turns the set on and off and volume or mute works. But the channels can't be selected from there and the tv isn't holding the setting properly for last input either. Thanks in advance.
This will only make the TV power on to the HDMI port. Will not change how your remote is programmed. Not sure what you mean when you say you can't change the channels. The xr15 remote should control the cable box. It does not?
@@DJsTutorials I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't need to pair his remote to his cable box again, sounds like that side of the remote is the problem.
Omg THANK you 😆 I just got one of these and love the tv but that Home Screen really pisses me off for some reason lol
You're welcome!
you rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you! Appreciate it.
Thanks, get to it faster
You're welcome.
Hi DJ, we tried the steps in the video for my elderly mom's Insignia Fire TV so that she can just use one remote, but when she turns it off for a few hours or to go to bed, for example- the next time she hits the power on (ALL) button on her Spectrum remote the tv screen says "No signal detected." She only watches Spectrum cable channels, so we got her a new cable box and coax cable, and still the same issue. Do you know why this is happening? Why is it not remembering her last input setting- which is always Spectrum. Thanks for your help!
Try using the TVs remote and see if it still does the same thing. The other thing that you may want to check is if HDMI CEC is Enabled on both the TV (you can find it under Settings > Display & Sounds > scroll to the bottom and you should see it) and in the Cable Box Settings. If both are Enabled, I would turn them OFF and then back on. Sometimes that helps. Let me know.
Hi DJ, the above worked. Thanks very much!@@DJsTutorials
You are welcome! Glad I could help.
Thank you! I hate the amazon home screen. I love my roku because it's so user friendly and clean.
You're welcome!
My man
When using voice button on remote I am saying "Switch to HDMI" but the response is "I can't switch to that input" .... is there a way to use voice controls to switch between?
You can try saying "Switch to Input #" instead. If that doesn't work, you may have to setup that Input with what you are using it with like Cable TV for example.
Mine keeps going back as you said with upgrades..any permanent fixes?
No there's not at the moment.
When you refer to the remote…..do you mean the remote that comes with the TV or the remote I use for Dish, or does it matter if I’m watching Dish?
It will be the TV remote.
Just bought my insigna today and my hdmi1-3 are not appearing as well as the antenna. Everything is plugged in and my ps5 is plugged to hdmi1 and it isn’t switching over! Need help!
Once you connect the PS5 to the HDMI port and you power it on, it should be available in the Inputs screen. You are saying that it's grayed out under Inputs? What is the model of the TV so I can take a look at the settings.
Thank you so much for this video! However, I'm still having a problem, when I turn the tv on after it's been off over night, it shows what station it's on but I keep getting an error code about my HDMI cable and I have changed it 2x, so I have to reboot my UVerse box every time, any suggestions?
What does the error code say exactly? That could be from the UVerse box.
@@DJsTutorials i'll take a pic in the morning, but I think it does say something about ATT! However, I've only gotten this error code with the new fire tv....
Sorry for the delay, just got a 3rd HDMI cable and same thing is happening, i took a pic but don't see how to attach it to this post. It says 'HDMI Error. Unable to display video.
(H1005-HDCP link integrity check failed). I'm old and not tech savvy and have 4 tvs in the house and this has only happened with the new insignia fire tv in the kitchen....pretty sure it's me, but I don't even know where to begin!!
@@wesleygg3955 I would recommend connecting the U-verse box to another HDMI port of your TV and see if it gives you the same error. Most answers online say to change the HDMI cable but you already done that 3 times. Another thing you can try is swap the U-verse box with another one from another TV, and see if it does the same. Let me know how it goes.
I owe you a beer - thank you.
Deal! You are welcome. Glad I could help.
How do I get back to cable from my insignia fire stick tv. Hdmi is correct at hdmi 1 but can't go back to infinity regular cable
You should be able to go to the "Inputs" on the left of the home screen. If you select HDMI 1 and the cable box is not working, unplug the power from the cable box and plug it in again.
Yes, THANK YOU!!! Simple fix. I've googled this before and gave up. I swear they hide on purpose, so that we have to watch the commercials on the Home screen.
You're welcome!
Jesus Christ! Thanks for this break down. Super frustrating but you solved my problem.
You're welcome!
It would be more simple for them to let you choose a default input. Thanks for the video!
It would, but that's Amazon for you.
Thanks I use my xbox for everything and it was annoying to have to manually switch to hdmi 1 all the time
You're welcome. Glad I could help!
Can you help me with my HDMI cable with my phone
What do you need help with? Give me a little more info please.
Also for young hip people who connect computers to their home theatre systems because app-style platforms are garbage and limiting ;)... thanks for the tip!
You are welcome!
Damn, great voice bro.
But anyway...
Im an old fvcker and I just got the Insignia NS-32DF310NA19 Fire TV and have been trying to get my old dvd player to work on it but its just not havin it. Its a regular older dvd player, no hdmi port, just the red/yellow/white A/V cord. I followed the hook up instructions, of course, there's no videos and no how to's.
Ive tried everything.
Do I need to download a dvd player app or something? That's about the only thing i can think of that I haven't tried. Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions? In all honesty this is my first new TV Ive ever gotten in my 57 years and its not going well, lol. Thanks bro.
Thank you Voo Duu! According to the model you posted, the TV does have the red/yellow/white (Composite) connection where you can connect the DVD player to. When you go to Inputs and select "Composite" nothing shows on the screen? Does it give you a message something like no source available or something like that?
@@DJsTutorials No sir, when I hit composite nothing happens. Thats kinda why I think I'm missing something. Thanks for the response.
Liked/commented/subbed/belled
@@DJsTutorials says no signal detected. I hit the input list and it takes me back to the same list...hdmi 1, 2, 3, antenna, dvd player and media player...if i hit dvd player it goes back to no signal detected...damn. i was so excited to get this too
It sounds like it does recognize the DVD player if it says in the input list DVD player instead of Composite. Try going in the settings of the DVD player and see if the settings menu shows up. I'm going to look to see if I can find something that I can connect to my Insignia TV to test it out and let you know how it goes. What is the model of the DVD player?
Will this work with a Samsung? If not any suggestions?
This is for a Fire Edition TV not a Fire TV Stick or Cube. Your Samsung TV should automatically start on the last input that it was on when you powered the TV off. Right now it does not power on on the last input that you where using?
Having an issue switching inputs with the voice function. Thought this might work.
@@kimhart9878 I take that you watched my other video on how to switch inputs using your Fire TV remote. I would try saying "Switch to Input #1" instead of "Switch to HDMI 1". For a lot of people that worked. Also, some people had to remove the TV and then add it again in order for it to work. Give that a try.
@@DJsTutorials I’lll try, it worked once tried again 5min later to show my bf and stopped working? Thought that was strange.
@@kimhart9878 That is kind of strange. Make sure there is nothing blocking the IR of the TV like a soundbar. Also don't release the microphone button to soon. Let me know if you get it to work or not.
What if ur inputs are not showing up once u click in input
Which TV brand and year do you have? That I never seen before happen.
My ps4 won’t work on hdmi it keeps sayin no signal detected and I got wifi
The first thing I would do is try another HDMI port and see if works there. If that doesn't work, try another HDMI cable. Let me know if either one helps.
Can you help me with my HDMI
What do you need help with? Give a little more info please.
my tv doesnt have last input option
