It doesn’t bother me that Dead&Co do some songs slower, they’re still GREAT songs played by GREAT musicians. Michael hits the nail on the head as to why they do it. If you take note of the songs that are slowed down, some, not all, but a good number of them were songs that JERRY sang, not Bobby. Bob’s style is very unique and A-tonal. Many of his chord voicings are not easily done whilst one is singing. Those chord shapes aren’t easy to find without looking at the fretboard, and it’s hard to look at the fretboard while singing. So naturally, you slow the song down to accommodate for that. Jerry’s chord voicings are relatively easy to find/make while singing because they’re easier to find without looking at the fretboard, therefore, you can play at a faster tempo. Also, half of Dead&Co are in their 70’s and still playing at a higher level than a vast majority of musicians out there today, how about we cut them just a little slack. ⚡️💀⚡️

I really enjoy DeadCo but the tempo HAS been something that’s an adjustment for my ears/senses, now I at least understand the WHY...what I don’t understand is why Bob doesn’t just sing Bob songs and let John or Oteil handle all of the Jerry stuff...
Saw them in ‘16 and John sang “Black Muddy River” it was WONDERFUL, then I saw Bobby do it and it just ain’t the same, by a long shot IMO.

@@ronduncan3969, I love seeing them and yes the tempo at times is much slower, but go on any forum and all people do is scream about it and the conversation always turns nasty. I'll still go see them when I can. Bobby controls the tempo and it's his call.

A first set D&C Shakedown will always be slower because Bob believes the magic lies in syncing with the energy of the crowd. It is kind of a spiritual 'Dead' kind of thing that when it works it is amazing and when it doesn't? Well.... John Mayer has talked extensively about how at first Bob's tempos were completely frustrating. But over time he has learned to trust Bob's instincts. John has even tried to incorporate 'audience' tempos into his solo concerts. The drummers are also notorious for dragging down tempos (especially Mickey). Thankfully, over the last couple of tours, John has earned the right to call tempos for the songs he sings (just not too fast).
As the man who holds the record for the most stage time, Bob has earned the right to be quirky. In addition to tempo, Bob is now known for his odd guitar effects, thin stringy tone and at times being impossible to hear clearly. I have even seen him do a whole Red Rocks Other Ones concert where he sang so quietly you could barely hear him. But quirky Bob is always better than no Bob.

Michael, an incredible display of Bob's guitar work is from 7-17-88 at the Greek Theater in Berkeley CA. The outro from Playing In The Band into Uncle John's Band is amazing. One of the low-hanging fruits for artificial intelligence, is isolating instrument and vocal parts in recordings already mastered. Already, there is a website that charges a very small amount to isolate the parts of any recording you load up. There are a myriad of implications from this. But one certainly is learning to play instrument parts, from recordings.

Thanks for this. I've learned a couple things that will definitely improve me playing this. I had no idea about the C7 or C9 at the end of a verse. I too always played a quick Bb. I appreciate the help.
Also, that "little F#" eluded me as well. Now I have something to add there!
During the chorus, I always thought they were bouncing between chords, not just playing C7. I just can't figure it out. Do they really just play C7?
I'm so glad you told people to give other musicians as much info as possible. I do, despite that some musicians are too lazy to look at the videos and chords I provide. One day they'll learn through failure that they ought to take advantage of what they're given. That may sound harsh, but it's disrespectful at the very least to the music when they 1/2 ass it.
I have that Premier version of Bobby's guitar. Possibly too many options on it.
Twenty years ago, Steely Dan could have made this theirs!

MP I completely agree with your analysis on why the tempo is ratcheted down. My first show was 12/31/78. I was 14. Kind of a good show ;/. I hit it hard and strong, dozens and dozens of shows. I stopped going, cold turkey, when the touch of grey crew showed up and they stopped playing Marin Civic, Berkeley Community etc etc. The whole vibe totally shifted within less than a year. (At Marin Civic I watched Jerry pull into the ;parking lot in his old beemer, park in the general lot, and just get out and walk over to the backstage entrance. Everyone just let him be.) I went to see Dead and Co for the first time right before the shutdown. It was awesome (I took my 15 y/o daughter.....what a trip that was) but it was super clear that Bob was much slowed down (duh. We all are)

What is Bobby doing in the middle minor modal section of Playing In The Band, say on the Ace album? 32 10 beat bars? Low ambiguous chords? Keeping off Jerry's turf? How about the chords behind the sax solo on Weather Report Suite (Wake Of The Flood)? Especially the last bit! Challenge - arrange the Main Ten intro and dual lead sections for solo guitar.

I've always been a fan of Bobby's guitar playing and have taken slack from plenty of musicians but I believe there is some genius to what Bobby is doing on the guitar as a rhythm guitar player. Most people describe Bobby's parts as "a lead rhythm guitar player" as it may be somewhat true we gotta look at what he is playing in terms of relativity to the other guys in the band. Bobby's job is to connect Jerry and Phil but as Bobby says in his own words that he took a cue from McCoy Turner and the likes of Bill Evans. In other words Bobby took influence from how the piano is played and then translated to guitar. Bobby's the man

You first have to put on a pair of tight jeans shorts and a tank top if you're gonna tackle any of Bob Weir's parts.

When the 8x10 opens back up, you have to see a better of dead show. They’re the best local dead cover band by far!
