- Cecil Taylor Unit (video stops at 44:00, but audio keeps going)
Montreux 1976
Cecil Taylor - piano
David S. Ware - tenor saxophone
Jimmy Lyons - alto saxophone
Raphe Malik - trumpet
Alan Silva - bass
Marc Edwards - drums
Thank you so much for posting this. I was good friends with both Cecil and Raphe for many years. I got to study and perform with Cecil in the mid 80’s and Raphe was my big brother who took me under his wing, mentored me and played trumpet in my Toronto based band from the mid 90’s until the early 2000’s. I still wear his fedora which his wife gave me when he passed.
Great to see some footage of Cecil playing with Marc Edwards
Worth it for Alan Silva alone.
A true master, i suggest his playing with Bill Dixon, crazy stuff
Having this makes the world a better place
One of my favourite editions of the unit!
You are a god for finding and sharing this footage. Thank you so much. Love your band too! You're a great drummer.
facts!
First time I heard Cecil Taylor a jazz drummer play the ablum ' Nefertiti the beautiful one has come"....I remember him saying "time hasn't caught up with them yet..
And the hits keep coming…thanks again!
Great music, heroes of the open ear. Thank you for uploading this gem!

* Taylor often played tunes in various forms, restructured and rearranged, and we have 2 other performance of 'Petals' to go off. This performance appears to come in towards the end of the tune, and omits 'Theme D' played at the end. See 15/04/1976 & 30/06/1976 for other performances of this tune.
** Compared with the 30/06/1976 performance of this tune, the one played here omits 'Theme D' after the 'Group Improvisation' section, and instead of going into the next section of the song ('Theme D' & then the solos), it segues into another composition.
* * * No other performances to refer to. An audio bootleg of this show has circulated with the titles »Lillians« and »Alougu«, and since both 'Petals' and 'DSMNPFG' are titled, perhaps these applied to this tune instead.

My dad once said music is something you can whistle. I am 70 and have heard lots of different music over the years and I tend to agree with him. Words matter. Music and sound effects are not the same.
and this IS music!
I guess it all depends on how good a whistler you are then.
I'm having no trouble whistling this.
Sounds like you need to practice your whistleling more.
Try whistling Bach. I guess that’s not music. Ffs!
