I used to watch for awesome travel content. Fun destinations and great food. Now you are micro-dosing illegal drugs while watching the homeless and making false statements. Australia's homeless epidemic is just as sad. This video is disheartening on so many levels...

East Hastings has been notorious drugs and crime for over 40 years, But in the last few years, even the past few months especially it has gotten way out of hand, Canada B.C does have high cost of living issues, But at the core it is indeed substance abuse and illness being the main causes for them living in tents on the streets,
Also B.C has been in somthing the province has called a TOXIC DRUG CRISIS for 7 years now.
Most of the narcotics o the streets crack, meth, heroin, etc, is lace with a synthetic drug called fentanyl or carfentanyl which is even stronger, so when users smoke this laced poison their either slump over dragging their feet like a zombie in the horror movies or go wild and attack people passing by for no reason or even smashing windows for no reason.
Injection based use is even worse, the fentanyl is so incredibly strong that the tiniest micro amount can kill a person, literally in minutes making it almost impossible not for them to overdose,
So after injecting the drug they simply pass out stop breathing and die unless the medics get to them in time with a reverse stimulant antidote called Narcan, which they give it by needle, but lately after 3, 4, 5, injections of Narcan the person still doesn't wake up because the fentanyl is that strong, so in this case the medics use a nasal stray version of the Narcan as a last ditch effort to save someone, this usually works and the person is saved, the problem is after that persons is revived the addiction is so strong they are not grateful for not being saved, some actually get angry and combative because they were stopped from getting high on the drug, even a near death experience does not even faze them a bit now, overdosing near death two or even three times in one 24hr period is not unheard of and when asked to go to the hospital for additional help some blatantly refuse and just storm off back to the streets to score more drugs and it starts all over again.
and finally the city of vancouver has a safe injection cite office in the hastings area for them, clean needles, hand outs of food and personal items clothes, tents, sleeping bags all given to them for free and even a few hotels were purchased to house some of them, but all this and more has done little to stop the homelessness, drug use and record numbers of deaths In B.C That get bigger and bigger every year since the crisis began....

You drove by the Downtown Eastside, looking out of the window from the comfort of your 'safe' vehicle, at the underprivileged people in that neighbourhood as though tourists around a safari, making remarks based on brief sightings but without direct interactions with the people. You then made a video and benefit (if not monetarily, then for clicks at least) from it. A bloody wonderful piece of work that transcends conscience and respect, while contributing to the continual stigmatisation of this marginalised community.

I don't go around taking random strangers home, be that the street folks you refer to, or you. But I've been going to their neighbourhood and volunteering in the organisations that provide them basic human needs and assistance to pursue a better life.

We have a huge problem with homeless people near where I live. Lloyd is right the root of the problem is addiction. They don’t want to go to local shelters for a variety of reasons, but we don’t have enough shelters either. The police comes in and makes them move. They just move to another area. I think it’s a problem everywhere.

Best vlog yet, thanks for the reality check. Ain’t that capitalism, greed and so called democracy so good, don’t ya all think? The moment an investment value is placed on the fundamentals of life, it will always result in winners and losers. During the endless lockups here in the land of OZ in 2020, not one homeless person could be found sleeping rough, so housing them can be done. These people are living this way because we allow our elected leaders make it so.

Interesting that you talk about the homeless in East Hastings. I just googled homeless populations world and it seems that (aside from war torn and politically disrupted countries) many of the more affluent countries have (UK, US, Australia) with high costs of living have more homeless. Sadly many countries have tipped over the million people mark.

OMG ... Im surprised that you guys didn't know the homelessness situation in Australia is a basket case!! On any given night at least 9,700 people In Brisbane alone are roughing it on the streets! (fact check - Salvation Army stat) In all of Australia its out of control sadly to say.. 😞over 120,000 are estimated homeless... So for a smaller Populated continent as is Australia there are way too many homeless people.. The Government on all sides are the problem in my opinion.

Drug problems and mental illness go hand in hand and is a worldwide problem. It is so very sad, but it is so much deeper than that. It's about disenfranchised humans, about our poor education, our lack of meaningful jobs, the greed of some countries, the greed of the power players. I am happy that being nearly 73 years old I have had a brilliant lifetime, but also suffered from anxieties, and depression all my life. We need to stay close to nature, rejecting the woke doctrine, develop our integrity and empathy to all.

There is over 150,000 homeless people in the "lucky" country of Australia....most people don't see it ..especially around Byron Bay lol believe me it's real ...and a lot of women over 60 ...the situation is dire

    • @stewartl5109
      @stewartl5109 Рік тому

Yes so sad 😞 Byron Bay you’ve mentioned.. but even The Gold Coast is getting worse every year for homelessness!! To take the word “Lucky” country Australia is No More sadly to say. To much greed, extreme cost of living, poor tax reform, political spin and bullshit from all sides of government!!
We used to have in the 80’s & 90’s public servants that as the word states serve us tax payers… Now we serve the politicians what a joke… Most politicians couldn’t even run a chook raffle let alone this once “lucky” country as we all knew as Australia. WT 😎 anyway we can only all try our best to just survive and be kind to everyone.

If I had to somewhere as a digital nomad it would probably somewhere in southeast Asia or maybe south America even though it's a bit unsafe there. Mexico is a great place because of proximity just a 5-9 hour plan ride to anywhere the US. Except for the occasional kidnapping of Americans for ransom which happens more often than you think or cartel conflict I think it's a great place for Americans to get away from the states for a very affordable flight. The quality of the food or service or price might not the best compared to oher destinations but it sure is still better than nyc or LA or any other decaying major American city where crime and violence and homelessness etc are rampant. My dad grew up in San Francisco in the 60s and 70 era and he's said he's never seen the homeless become so violent and the mental health issue get this bad to the point of no return

California is the homeless capital of US I don't know where the biggest encampments are. But bear in mind California is the most expensive state and one of the richest and where Hollywood is! And the government just doesn't do a thing. I live in New York and the homeless population here is fairly big too. But not all homeless are homeless because they are addicts some times are illegal actions of the government perpetrated on the poor, other there's people who have money but there's no affordable housing, etc. I used to be a x-ray tech who relocated from Puerto Rico to New York to continue my career and better pay and...the government mistook me for someone with my same name and destroyed my life, I ended up homeless because of ILLEGAL actions of the government and lost my career. I was homeless from 2014-2015 and did I suffer. But I learned a few valuable things about New York State, the government here destroys the life of medical professionals that relocate here to the point they loose their profession or career. I've met lots of professionals here that have lost their careers here. I think the government does this to give locals a better chance at the jobs...HORRIBLE! When I was homeless I met people who had money but were homeless because they couldn't find affordable living! Others told me a very familiar story as how the government destroyed their lives. This was specially true if they were black. Anyway whatever you do DO NOT RELOCATE TO U.S. especially New York this state is very f...up!🙉 It's so sad your homeless situation in Canada and to think at one time I contacted CAMRT and was thinking about relocating to Canada because of how angry I'm at New York. But now I'm having second thoughts if Canada too has homeless like too well...😞 Anyway U.S. is my country but I don't like it and I'm not happy here but at least I have a roof. There's other people I know that view Canada like ultimate destination to relocate to!🙏

Not just mental illness, trauma too…many ppl need drugs to be able to cope with the trauma they’ve experienced. They can’t “use” in shelters so they prefer the streets. The housing prices are the highest in BC, specifically Vancouver area, so this adds to the problem

Mental illness has caused a homeless issue for decades, but the reason you're really noticing it in the US and Canada now is the opiate crisis. There's many people who were OK mentally and had a home, but then suffered some kind of injury or illness that resulted in an opiate prescription that led them into a spiral downward.
I think the homeless count seems low because a lot of the people you saw technically do have a 8' x 10' room in a SRO (single resident occupation, aka welfare hotels) in the area.
