Try growing them in containers. Works wonders. Put the containers where they can't reach it.

I plant in containers and my problem is rats. I found that if I cover the pots with tulle at night my plants are safe. Some pots I can use wire trash baskets upside down and they fit the pots perfectly. If I forget to cover the plants, the tops of my potatoes, parsley and carrots are eaten down to the ground by morning. Because of my pets rat traps and poisons are out of the question.

I just noted in a response to my comment on their carrot fries recipe about a month ago, Hollis said he was planning to release a video on container grown carrots in October. I ordered the Bolero seeds for my fall garden, can’t wait to see the video…

Hi Hollis and Nancy, Thanks so much for everything I have learned through the years. I saw something interesting from a Canadian carrot 🥕 grower last week. I don't remember her channel. Anyway, she made a thick pudding from just cornstarch and water. When it was cool, she stirred in her carrot 🥕 seeds. Then she put it into a ziplock gallon bag. She cut a tiny hole on one corner. Then she made a fine line of carrot seed cornstarch pudding in her row. Covered it and watered. All it cost her was seed, cornstarch and a gallon bag. I thought it was genius and felt shame that I couldn't have thought about it 40 yrs ago. 👋🤣

@@tianasixkiller4771 I checked it. Yes that is her! Thanks 😊 and if they search "Quebec Homestead Carrots" it goes right there. You are awesome! I dont see any reason people can't make the pudding gallons ahead of time and freeze them. I would try with and without seeds. Interesting trial.

Black Kow is great. Each time that I’ve purchased it from the big box stores (yes different ones and locations) it’s wet. This makes it very difficult to mix in and spread. I’ve NEVER purchased a bag that nice and as dry as yours.

How do I get started in gardening? There is so much to learn, beds to make/build, fencing...its a lot and a bit overwhelming. Where should I start? We are a family of 4, and we have about 10 acres and raise sheep for meat. We want to garden, but arent sure where to start. We are located in East Texas.
God bless you and your family.

  • @calistarlim3242
    @calistarlim3242 2 роки тому

Cool new tool! The open tops give me a bit of anxiety, they need clear clip covers🤣. I noticed though that your allocation can fit at least 2 more rows comfortably, wondering if you could fill just two rows and roll two rows closer to the top of the bed, then roll the 4 rows again as you already did. That’ll give you 6 rows using up your whole space. 1500 carrots might just be too much for y’all though.

I do can lots of our own vegetables but there is so much misinformation on safe canning that I feel that it is important for each families to do their own research. The main research place is nchfp nchfp.uga.edu/#gsc.tab=0 also it is good to take classes from us extension office or join groups that discuss safe canning. The more I learn the more I realize how important to do it right or you can harm or kill someone you love. Blessing

You know, I was wondering if those devices worked as advertised. I'm glad to here you tested one out, and liked it enough to buy one for yourself. A seed sowing device that actually takes only a couple of minutes to plant 1,000 carrots, and no bending?! Worth it!!! Thanks for showing us how to use it. Pelleted seeds. Ok then. Oh, and you pull, not push. "Develop into the carrots that God meant them to be." Hilariously said! The carrots look so good. I'm certain that the carrots at the store don't taste anywhere near as good as yours. I can't grow year round - NJ is too cold for that. But I look forward to planting my own following your tips. This is another great video. Thank you!

You can do it. We live in Maine. We plant one bed in the Spring, and a 2nd bed
after we pull our garlic in Early July. The first bed gets used for fresh bed all
summer and early fall. The 2nd bed is left until end of October to be put into
fresh storage. A frost or 2 doesn't hurt then one bit. Promise, it works. 😊

This will be our 3rd year growing Bolero carrots. We won't grow anything else.
When buying seed from Johnny's look closely at the volume prices.
1 packet, 250 seeds, $5.80. This is for pelleted seed.
1000 seeds, $6.55. Spend the extra .75 cents. Split an order with a/some friends.
    That's 500 seeds each for $3.28.
Also, with pelleted seed you can easily replant individual spaces if a few don't
germinate. Best carrots we've ever grown.
The most important tip was "Keep the Seeds Moist". Once planted and germination
starts, if they dry out your growth rate diminishes greatly, or at very least slows
germination down. Do not let the soil surface dry out. Good Luck All 😊
    TYFS, Great tips.

Hollis, I've been a fan of your channel from way back in the early VA days. Still love your work! Now that you've expanded your operation significantly, why do you continue to use bagged mediums like lime, compost, soil, etc. I figure in the amounts you're using them it might be more economical to buy it in bulk and keep piles on the property. Then just move it around with the loader tractor. Thoughts?

Hi Nancy and Hollis. I am a fan and I Thanks you so much for sharing your planting techniques and for showing us how to garden. I apply all your techniques to my gardening especially now that I moved my garden in a different area in my house that gets year round sun.
I am From Jacksonville Fl and I would very much appreciate if you can share with me when you plant your vegetables so I can plant them at the right time. Thats one that I struggle with. I want to follow your calendar since we have the same zone where I am. Like now I watch this episode when you planted carrots, and here I am planning to plant carrots around this time of the season (March) and I think I am wrong. I really appreciate you helping me with the calendar of veggies to plant. Thank you so much in advance. I look forward to your response.

This is way off topic. My husband heard this video from the kitchen and ask why is dr Phil talking about carrots. I died laughing. He actually does sound a little like Dr Phil 😂

how about carrot spacing while planting seeds? I seem to have had them too close together; produced very thin carrots and many were gnarled-- not smooth like Hollis'!

I grew carrots one year and they weren't a single root they were crazy looking and I read it was from using Cow compost in my bed. Is that not true or did I misread that?
