Starting to offer a video version of my podcast episodes after about 5 years of only doing audio is one of the best decisions I've ever made. It ended up doubling my listeners, both due to adding new forms of discoverability on UA-cam, but also because some people just prefer to watch video and will *only* tune in if there is a video version. So it is kind of a no-brainer if you want to double your audience.

The solution is to start a podcast channel and keep it SEPARATE from your main youtube channel. The podcast playlist can be featured on your main channel page, but don't post podcast episodes on your main channel because that can hurt retention and future video performance.

Pat, your advice and tutorials are absolutely priceless. Whilst listening to your video, i was in other tabs, which i guess follows on from the point you were making. I agree, it's not my favourite thing when i have to flip back to the tab or screen to see what someone is talking to camera about, and it can be annoying. I'm not really a TV, film, or video watcher, and much prefer audio, as I can get on with other things whilst listening, or as is often the case, I listen as I wind down the day in bed. Sage advice from you got me started with The Family Histories Podcast, and I've been enjoying charting these last couple of weeks in Apple Podcasts 'Top Charts' for History in UK, Canada, and Australia. Thank you for everything in 2021, and I wish you health and happiness through 2022.

We’ve been recording a monthly podcast for few years now. In 2020 we experimented with live-streaming it. And while that was fun, we saw three things that made us stop and focus on audio only.
    1. We did not attract many live viewers.
    2. Those who watched live could ask questions and it was probably more fun for them, but for the rest (listening to recording) would suffer.
    3. Number of view the video later got was also low.
It’s points you also say, it’s interesting to see how we came to similar conclusions.
I like the idea with 3-5min bits, might try that, thanks!

You cleared up and answered a lot of my questions. You are always the best. I plan to start simply by adding clips from my audio episodes and filming at the same time I record a guest. I believe too that more leverage can be had by pulling out a topic and using the video as small bites to onboard listeners and subscribers. this was awesome man. I started my podcast where I am basically providing commentary of headlines I want to breakdown to people on but I am doing so to bring attention to the truth of things while sharing my faith as a christian by giving a commentary on scripture. I was recording the entire thing on my phone but found editing that video and then uploading the audio which then I had to listen to and make sure I needed to edited anything out became time consuming and exhausting. But I want to utilize UA-cam as a way to gain more exposure. I believe I will be using the snippet idea that you mentioned. That sounds like it makes a lot more sense. Great content.

Dude, Pat, really appreciate this. I had a great idea for a video podcast so I got some cameras and mics, setup a table in a park, and started interviewing people who wanted to talk. They all love it but what was supposed to be a 7 minute interview has continuously turned into 30-90 minutes because the people find my idea so interesting and they never want to stop at the 7 minutes (we talk about them). However, I'm not a video editor nor am I tech savvy. Im just a guy with an idea and people seem to love it. I've spend the past week just researching simple editing software because everything seems overly complicated to me. To this moment I'm still confused and undecided.
So, I thought I would outsource it. My freaking gosh is that expensive for the length of time of the interviews considering I can do 2-3 interviews per day each lasting no less than 30 minutes but thats conservative. I knew I could clip it for reels or shorts on Insta, youtube, tik tok, etc. and separate audio for a podcast, but was also planning to post the full video interviews to youtube.
This is so logical, but it hadn't occurred to me. Man, thank you for easing that burden some! Truly. I never reply on youtube but this really really helped. I sub to your podcast, and it isn't much, but have another YT sub sir. Thank you. 🙏

Big fan of your content, tips & advice. I primarily do celebrity video interviews on my channel (started with rock & roll celebs) then added in famous TV personalities. I started to make audio podcast versions of the video shows per request from a viewer and now have over 100 episodes on Apple Podcasts etc. I find that if I miss uploading one audio episode, listeners are like "when is the the next episode coming?". I am still trying to improve every show, but am very glad I decided to compliment the video podcast with its own audio version as well. Thank you so much for your great advice.

Great video, Pat. So many podcasters are going video that I've been pondering it. But, as you said, it seemed like a crazy idea since I personally can't imagine staring at two people talking for 30, 45, or 60 minutes. In addition, many of my guests ask, "I'm not going to be on video, am I?" Your 5 minute or so segments to draw interest sounds perfect. If I have a guest who doesn't want to show their face, it's easy to put up a graphic for a few minutes. Now I'm excited and I'm going to hunt down some podcasts that use your suggestion. I think you'll see my podcast "Queer Writers of Crime" coming to UA-cam soon.

You've just answered questions that kept me up for the last week. The idea of promoting the audio podcast by some video on social media is great. I'll probably start the easy way, then we'll see. Thanks.

    Great information!
I started a niche podcast two weeks ago which I livestream the recording. Keep this livestream up until I upload the edited video (I hit record on my camera while livestreaming) then cut out the pauses/umms/uhs and uploaded that.
They're just 10-20 minute videos but uploading snippets/segments is a GREAT idea. I'm already doing this for IG/FB I never thought to do it for UA-cam (and not shoot myself in the foot with long content no one finishes watching)

Hey man, great advice that you give here. I am getting ready myself to start a couple of different shows. One is a Podcast where we have filmed it as well and will pull clips to post those on youtube as you have suggested. Also going to be doing a live show that is streamed across Facebook, UA-cam, Twitch and Instagram all at the same time. All with everyone being in different states that are on the show. So this shall be fun.
