Thanks for sharing. I'm a GED/graduate degree recipient too! I got a GED when I was 16, started going to a community college when I was 17. I got my associate's degree at 19, transferred to a university, got my bachelor's at 21, my master's at 24, and a license at 26. If you are a dropout or GED recipient, please pursue higher education. There are as many opportunities out there for us as there are high school graduates.
I know this was 2 years ago, but I hope you see this. I got my GED when I was 16 as well. I'm going to college this spring semester. I'm so nervous. I want to a university and get my bachelor's too and hopefully my masters. I want to be successful in life. What you just said and this video are very inspirational! Thank you!
How about GED recipient, went the trades route, earning while apprenticing, worked hard, saved and now own a successful contracting firm? Millionaire! Never had a student loan!
I got a GED and my parents were upset. I ended up getting a BS and ME in environmental engineering. Now I am going through med school as a 3rd year student. I plan to go into orthopedic surgery or to become an ER physician. Ppl 💩 on GEDs but I have more success than other ppl. F*** the haters!
Carol, thank you for your story and strength. You encourage me, a 64-year-old white woman who never struggled. You are right. We get trapped in our own thinking and expectations. And government programs that "save" us do so at the cost of entrapping us in failed attitudes and behaviors. You are my inspiration. God bless you!
I was born and raised in south Texas as the youngest of six boys. I can fully empathize with your story. We lived in a three room "shack" on the wrong side of the tracks. We got baths in a #2 tub with water heated on the stove. Mom and dad would occasionally have strong words, but dad never, ever raised his hand against her. When I grew older, I realized that he would have feared for his life if he had. Ha!. After high school, and working for 3 years, I joined the Air Force. After that, I went to college and completed the 4 year program in 3 years. Yes, it ALL was hard work. By the way! I am white"! Congratulations on a life well lived.
You childhood sounds a exactly like mine. After graduation from high school I got married and we were both poorer than dirt and have been married 53 years this year. We have both worked really hard to get to where we are working 12 hour days with no time for vacations until my son got married an started taking me with them. Hard work NEVER KILLED ANYONE
Being a social worker myself, she is so spot on about the system being a trap. Every day I watch people, who decide to live as dependents to the system but don't think to better themselves. I think that the whole entitlement attitude comes from the fear of change and an unwillingness to acknowledge that they are the masters of their own destiny, which would result in them having to acknowledge that they can do something to better their situation. Many people in the system would rather remain its dependents than to grow up and make a new path for themselves, because that is hard to do.
P. D. The system also traps people in that when they are first trying to be independent of the system, they lose valuable entitlements (Healthcare, food stamps) that they can't afford on their own in the beginning unless they have outside support. It needs to work in a way that encourages them to work and wean off of the social programs. It was designed to keep people trapped. But I believe as people get their self esteem back and work harder/smarter they are further rewarded with pride that they can feed themselves, get Healthcare themselves and support themselves. I'm hoping that now there can be serious talk about helping people help themselves, because the Democrat philosophy has not worked!
It sounds exactly like my Mother's family except we are white. My mother's family picked cotton in exchange for a home to live in, she said there were more holes than walls, one winter they all lived in a tent and she said that was the warmest they had ever been in the winter time. her mother had 12 children, 9 lived to adulthood and only one was born in a hospital. My mother born in 1941 worked instead of going to HS which for some reason made her feel ashamed. Finally at age 45 she got her GED at age 50 and then went on to graduate as an RN, I had never seen her so proud. She died not long after that but she died with pride. I was so pleased to see you on Levin yesterday talking about how Welfare keeps you down and how you support President trump and do not believe in destroying monuments of the past. Thank you for allowing me to meet you via the internet and hearing your story and seeing that you will no longer let the Dem's hold you down.
You are a hero who speaks truth to power. As a Vanderbilt graduate I have been embarrassed by the chancellor's attacks on religious organizations and liberties on campus. I discourage anyone from attending my former alma mater. You may be the only shining light left in the cesspool that was once a proud Southern university. My God keep you safe for as long as you choose to stay.
I´m so inspired by you Professor Swain. I started a little UA-cam channel this year to help people prepare their GED, and hearing how getting your GED can open so many doors for a person who is willing to put in the hard work and dedication is inspiring. Thank you for sharing your story.
WOW! WOW! WOW! Dr. Carol Swain on Judge Jeanine tonight! WHAT an incredible person she is! I THANK YOU for having the courage to speak the truth! God Bless you Dr. Swain... Lisa Melby :o)
Lovely, classy, kind, delightful and POTENT woman/person. God bless you! Keep teaching the truth! These kids today NEED to hear truth, just bought your book, looking forward to it.
I just saw you on CNN and you are spot on about Black Lives Matter and the welfare system. You are a beautiful, eloquent human being. You are a hero! I really admire you! Your students are lucky to have you! I will send this video to my friend who is studying for their GED as you are an inspiration for all about what is possible!
Your story is very inspiring...I was in a similar situation years ago, too. Today I'm a teacher, my children grown. Life is good, although it was, and could have ended up, much worse. God Bless, Dr Swain. Enjoy seeing your commentary on the news. xo.
Very inspiring story! Carol...you have shown the disenfranchised youths in this society? With just a little faith and fortitude, you can accomplish anything! God Bless You!
You are an Amazing Women. You have brought me to tears. Words cannot express my gratitude to you for sharing your story. You have lifted me up and I'm sure millions of others. Thank you.
Professor Swain you are a role model for us all. Please continue to speak out so everyone can see that success is possible for anyone willing to work for it. Thank you!
Professor Swain has put into very eloquent words thoughts & beliefs I acquired several years ago when I began working in Social Services. I started my career there believing I was going to "help" people, and I came to realize that the system actually hurt people. I didn't have any answers, nor was I as intelligent as Dr. Swain. I am now a 76 year old white woman, & I look back on those days with a sense of missed opportunity. I loved viewing this video & can only say Hooray! to the doctor. Bless her.
I don’t know how anyone could be fond of and admire this lovely and graceful woman, who is a lady in every sense of the word. She just radiates genuine decency.
As a Christian I'm so glad for you and people like you . God Bless you and yours Mrs . Swain !!! So needed in this time of UNGODLYNESS racism and hate !!! Blessings to every race of Godly people !!! Good and bad in every race , Godly and unGodly in every race !!!
Your story is the reason America is great. Proof that you can be what you want to be in this great nation. Truly inspirational. It's sad that the one's on the left don't want to acknowledge these facts. I admire this beautiful lady. God Bless you and your family ✌️❤️🇺🇸
She dropped out in 8th grade - before the Department of Education was established. In other words while the schools still expected good behavior and effort. So an 8th grade education back then is better than many 12th grade educations now.
This is an absolutely amazing story... Lady you are a true inspiration to ALL!!! Your true life experiences speak volumes... May the Lord, CONTINUE to Bless and Keep You, AMEN
She is such a huge role model... she proves anyone can do anything if they set their minds to it. I love her as well, and share much of her story/messages on social media...

I have so much respect for this woman. Se decided to drop the victimhood mentality and choose the I can do attitude. I truly respect her.
Who in Their right mind would give this a Thumbs Down. Awesome story of hard work & dedication.
But they're not in their right mind or it's a 'bot' that just goes around giving thumbs downs.
They're trolls. Ignore them. 😀
