Claudine Gay IS A RACIST, A LIAR, AND A CHEATER. I'M NOT SURPRISED SHE STOLE THIS WOMAN'S WORK. HARVARD NEEDS TO FIRE HER!!! SHE'S A DISGRACE TO HERSELF AND SHE RUINED HARVARD'S REPUTATION.
Carol Miller Swain was born on March 7, 1954, in Bedford, Virginia, the second of twelve children. Her father dropped out of school in the third grade and her mother dropped out in high school. Her stepfather used to physically abuse her mother, Dorothy Henderson, who is disabled due to polio. Swain grew up in poverty, living in a shack without running water, and sharing two beds with her eleven siblings. She did not have shoes and thus missed school whenever it snowed. She did not finish high school, dropping out in ninth grade. She moved to Roanoke with her family in the 1960s and appealed to a judge to be transferred to a foster home, which was denied. Swain instead lived with her grandmother in a trailer park. After she divorced in 1975, Swain earned a GED and worked as a cashier at McDonald's, a door-to-door salesperson, and an assistant in a retirement facility. She later earned an associate degree from Virginia Western Community College.[3][4] She went on to earn a B.A., magna cum laude, in criminal justice from Roanoke College and a master's degree in political science from Virginia Tech. While an undergraduate at Roanoke College, she organized a scholarship fund for black students that by 2002 had an endowment of $350,000. She finished a Ph.D. in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1989. In 2000, she earned a Master of Legal Studies from Yale Law School. "Wikipedia Quote".
I feel bad for the writer bc she is fighting both against the president of Harvard and the idea of affirmative action bc she earned her place as an academic while Gay fell into her place based on race and little merit. It really does hurt all of us.
Agreed. When Harvard was searching for a new president they sent along a message to ask faculty and staff. They highlighted that they wanted the next president to put DEI in the forefront. It was pretty much inferred that they were going to hire based on ethnicity. It was quite disheartening.
Unfortunately, many blacks have gotten ahead thanks to affirmative action, even Swain. It was the absolute worst thing Kennedy did as president. And LBJ didn't help the matter with the civil rights act.
Dr. Swain needs to testify before Congress IMMEDIATELY to assert the veracity of her own hard work and show what a blatant fraud Queen Claudine is line by lifted line!!
But is Harvard listening to her? This is indefensible conduct from Gay, who needs to be fired. Every news outlet should be interviewing Professor Swain.

Despite already left my university for some time, I have taught plagiarism is a fundamental breach of integrity being an undergraduate. There is no excuse for such. Shame on Harvard for political correctness only without seriously investigating the matter and taking appropriate and essential action.
Regardless if she quits or is fired, she is forever stained and her reputation there will always be soured from the students that attend the school to the people who donated and the alumni who graduated. She is a walking disgrace and will only continue to damage the elitist hypocritical institution she works for. Keep her and watch the brand continuously decline.
One of my friends plagiarized a sentence, yes 1 sentence, and the university was extremely harsh to her. As I remember, the punishment was 10 hours of community service, grade 'F' for the class, 6 months evaluation. Because of all of this, she later dropped from the university and I didn't see her again. Think again on which race has that "privilege".
I admire Dr. Swain. That being said, I see more and more people getting ahead in academic fields by less than sterling means! When unethical people get placed into positions of authority, we all suffer! Also, I begin to trust the system less and less.
Yes I agree. He was most rude..interrupting her in mid-sentence. He is quite young and has a lot to learn in how to interview intelligently. I just wanted him to shut up!
Harvard has little choice but to back her, having supported her all along, it could not afford to turn around and admit that any degree it has handed out, is not worth the paper it's written on. This needs independent scrutiny, and in the face of this, Harvard would have no place to hide.
This has gone on for a while, but now it is just more blatant and in our faces. Language should be used to define and describe, but when used politically it is used to obscure and confuse.
If Harvard refuses to accept that it was plagiarism, and state that "it meets their standards", then their standards will lose respect along with the value of any degree from Harvard. If they want to kill the value of their school..... Then by all means, go ahead.

You don't have to nit-pick as some might consider minor situations of plagiarism, as in academic work, as opposed to commercial ventures. INSTEAD look at the issue at hand. How has Harvard treated matters of student speech in the past. There is a perfect example of their two faced callous double standard. In 2019, Harvard 'expelled' an accepted student by rescinding an offer of admission, before he ever set foot on campus. Perfectly qualified, and accepted, then they discovered he had used the 'n' word on a FB group page post, when he was 16 years old, two years prior to being accepted to Havard. lol. Gone . . . bye bye. Compare that to a student on campus calling for the mu r d e r of Jews, in an environment just short of Kristolnacht levels, with Ms. Gay not able to bring herself to say that it would even be a violation of conduct, let alone a cause for being expelled. I went to a good university, but not one as famous or noteworthy as Harvard. They held incredibly high standards for all papers and research. Looking back a huge part of my editing of my dissertation was going through my work with a fine tooth comb to ensure my work was properly referenced and credit given to ideas and passages that were not my own. I knew there would be no excuse for not referencing my paper correctly. President Gay's clear plagiarism is either the result of dishonesty, or sloppiness... either way she was a well educated educated woman by that point who handed in a paper absolutely knowing that she hadn't followed approved standards and rules.
I feel that the example of the sentence used here was not plagiarism. What other words would you use to express this thought? On the other hand her defense of genocide was a fireable offense. If you were to use another word ilo of jews Harvard would come down full force. Scorched earth....but for attacking jews....not so much. Edit: There needs to be a citation as to where the data came from ie to the original author.
Basically it is plagiarism because she didn't reword, restructure, cite and reference as you are supposed to. Is it the worst example of plagiarism? No, and probably many students do the same and get away with it. Should the president of Harvard get away with submitting such work and becoming president of Harvard partly on the back of that work? I would argue no. I actually think some of the plagiarism standards are excessive and that what's most important is that you cite and reference correctly at undergrad level. Correct plagiarism is supposed to show that you have actually mastered the knowledge and reproduce it in your own words, but how many undergraduate students do that? Perhaps these highest plagiarism rules should be reserved for PhDs and higher, but that is if course what Ms Gay is.

@@formulaic78 I taught English and history courses, first on the secondary level and then on the university level. I was also a dissertation advisor for 22 years. No excuses---plagiarism is plagiarism. Undergraduate students should know the rules about plagiarism---and most students are honest about citing material that isn't theirs. On the graduate level there is simply no excuse for plagiarism, period. "Standards are not excessive," and there are numerous websites, composition texts, and formal textbooks devoted solely to various documentation styles to guide any academic or professional writer as to correctness of notations, Works Cited, Bibliography, etc. Your post suggests the slippery slope---students on the undergraduate level possibly can get away with plagiarism because they don't know the rules or don't care to follow them. However, if those students move on to graduate level work, then what happens? Does a lightbulb go on and flash, "Now you must document your sources correctly because you're in grad school," or will students continue to engage in that little bit of plagiarism because they can get away with it and it just slips under the cracks? The rules about academic honesty exist for a reason: so that people don't "borrow/steal" someone else's words, ideas, or work. I've seen academic standards erode year after year, with the curriculum dumbed down to meet the lowest common denominator of students now going to college. We see people across all walks of life cheating, stealing, declaring ideas to be their own when those ideas belong to someone else. Ethical standards, integrity, and academic honesty are not too much to ask in an environment where students are asked to submit THEIR work and not the work or ideas of someone else. Maybe honesty and integrity have gone out the proverbial window today, along with so many other things in life. If plagiarism is allowed and even condoned, then why bother to have students attend college or a university at all? Why bother to invest in the time, energy and effort it takes to complete and successfully pass a course when students can just take someone else's work, call it their own, and sail happily into the sunset with a degree that negates academic honesty and genuine learning--by simply borrowing someone else's ideas and claiming those words/ideas as their own?

Did anyone else notice that in the second example of plagiarism, she changed the word decrease to increase thereby changing the conclusion of the study?
I did notice that and it's a terrible example of plagiarism. At university I was more of a synonym swapper than a complete reformulationist (which is technically plagiarism although I honestly didn't realise that at the time, perhaps because British mid level universities more encouraged splicing quotes into your own sentences, which is actually a much easier way to find plagiarism than allowing freeform paraphrasing) but I would never have submitted something as blatant as that where she not only lost the meaning of the original but also only changed about ten percent of the words and almost none of the structure. I now teach at a Chinese university and she is the dean of Harvard!

Harvard sent out this: "On December 9, the Fellows reviewed the results, which revealed a few instances of inadequate citation. While the analysis found no violation of Harvard’s standards for research misconduct, President Gay is proactively requesting four corrections in two articles to insert citations and quotation marks that were omitted from the original publications." There is no such thing as "inadequate citation." You cite or you don't. Erroneous is possible, wrong page, wrong form. If a citation is inadequate, then it is not a citation and you have plagiarized. There is nothing "proactive" about her corrections: she got caught and is hiding it in plain sight. Adding citations and quotation marks is an admission of plagiarism.

This sounds familiar. I went to Columbia Teachers College. There was a professor there who asked graduate students to devise a training program for underprivileged adults. Who created the program using their work, packaged and sold it for a lot of money . The graduate students got neither money nor credit, just good grades. The rules against plagiarism apply only to the club. The work of underlings and professors from "lesser" universities is up for grabs.
What you're saing is a little unclear. ARe you saying this professor stole all the Graduate Student work, Program and Ideas. Or are you saying the professor used the Underpriveldged adults Ideas and stole them? I beleive you mena the former, but I am not positive.
Reading my comment again, you are right that I was being unclear.

Harvard has little choice but to back her, having supported her all along, it could not afford to turn around and admit that any degree it has handed out, is not worth the paper it's written on. This needs independent scrutiny, and in the face of this, Harvard would have no place to hide.
We live at a time in history when labeling a matter is a tactic to steer an agenda, not an act to identify a matter accurately.
This has gone on for a while, but now it is just more blatant and in our faces. Language should be used to define and describe, but when used politically it is used to obscure and confuse.

The rules about academic honesty exist for a reason:
so that people don't "borrow/steal" someone else's words, ideas, or work. I've seen academic standards erode year after year, with the curriculum
dumbed down to meet the lowest common denominator of students now going to college. We see people across all walks of life cheating, stealing,
declaring ideas to be their own when those ideas belong to someone else.

“The learned know their lives give their degrees value rather than the other way around. One doesn’t argue that pudding is good because its recipe is. If pudding tastes bad, its recipe won’t make it tasty. Your degree isn’t who you are. What you’re doing with your life is.”

"What would the world think of Jesus or the Buddha being awarded a posthumous honorary degree? Or what would the world think if either had bothered to earn a doctorate had one been available? Would a degree enhance our regard for either? Dr. Gautama? Dr. Jesus?"

“When a person wants his civilization to be better than another but doesn’t know how to make it so, he has little alternative but to tear the other down. Aggression indicates a lack of imagination as much as anything.”

“The single greatest difference between Islam and most of the rest of the world’s approaches to living is the deep pessimism that Islam holds for us all, contempt that Muslims truly believe requires them to punish others for not being Islamic or Islamic enough, punish them for not also being pessimistic, for not helping to administer the punishment.”

“Muslims pose-does anyone really think the brief, synchronized head-to-floor abasement in mosques is prayer?-and insist that everyone else do the same or pay jizya for refusing to. Of all the oddities in human history, Muslims’ adamant and expanding fourteen-century-long devotion to a thug’s bluster is surely the most shocking.”

But I do survive on less than $700 a month in American Social Security.
So does it means Harvard will drop Ethics requirements in their curriculum from now on?
Rules for thee but not for me, ring a bell?
Yes,if you are black!
The more I learn about this person the more it looks like she got the job in service of DEI rather than merit.
I wouldn't worry about it. A Harvard Degree is not very reputable anymore anyway.
The fact that Claude’s last name is Gay is just precious
We may need to consider if Dr. Gay actually wrote her own dissertation or if another writer was employed. She would have no excuse to "forget " to apply the proper attributions unless another person, writing for her , did not bother with appropriate due diligence. As Dr Swain surmised , Dr Gay was promoted up the system to a position of prominence waiting for her before she even began her PhD research. I myself have seen this in other cases, on many occasions, with other so called "Academics".
This is very common as far back as the seventies when I was in school. Its not DEI.
The privileged classes have used it for decades @@cataliaishere
Affirmative action at work.
Ms. Swain is trying HARD to take Claudine's spot in that house, isn't she? 😆
She should lose her job but tenure also. Riding on others coat tails to make her look better. Just a token.
None of these universities have high standards anymore!
It's great that the Harvard board is supporting its affirmative action appointee.
Whenever someone black gets a spot that people like you feel are only for white people, they are there because of affirmative action. You are sad
SERIOUSLY??? YOU MUST BE JOKING!!!!???? 😂😂😂😂
You poor racist, bitter that she has achieved more than you ever dream off
I’m sure you are being sarcastic right???
😀@@Dani-dg4ut
Dr. Carol Swain needs to be recognized as the original author and Dr. Gay’s dissertation called back. Dr. Gay does not belong in the President’s Chair. It’s apparent that she’s not being held to the same standard as everyone else. She is a thief of ideas and can’t defend her own. She needs to be fired.
