How I Survived a Fall from the 6th Floor? - Arya Kafle - The Storyyellers

- Aarya Kafle, a data analyst, shared her story at the 55th session of The Story Yellers. She spoke about surviving a life-threatening fall, highlighting her courage and resilience through the experience.
Aarya was supposed to complete her Computer Science degree in 2022, from India. Her 7th semester exams were scheduled for May 8, 2022. She had recently moved to a new place near her friend's house. The night before that exam, her friends were partying and had invited, but she declined since she had to prepare. However, one of her friends asked her to store some meat in her fridge, and she did.
The next morning, as her friends insisted, Aarya decided to run an errand to take the meat to her friend's place. She thought it would only take 10 minutes, so she agreed. Her friends were waiting for her on the terrace, which was on the 6th floor. When she arrived, the terrace appeared like a plain cemented surface. However, there was a section covered with a fiber sheet, which Aarya did not notice. The moment she stepped onto it, she fell straight down to the ground floor, shattering the tiles below.
Her friends rushed her to the hospital. When they arrived at the emergency room, Aarya was conscious but couldn't recall anything. Due to the immense pain in her body, she was placed in an induced coma. After seven days, she regained consciousness. Upon waking, she found out that her parents had flown in from Nepal, and then she knew about the accident.
Every morning, the doctors would come for their rounds and brief her about her injuries. The accident had caused major damage to her pelvic floor, a burst compression fracture; air filled in her lungs from a fractured rib cage, a third-degree liver laceration leading to non stop internal bleeding, and nerve damage. It was then that Aarya realized her journey had shifted-from being Aarya Kafle to being "Patient Aarya Kafle."
She underwent two surgeries, one for her spinal cord and another for her leg. Soon after, the doctors discussed the need for a third surgery. They explained, “We’ll have to operate on her tailbone, a surgery that will be performed for the first time at this hospital. The chances of survival during this surgery are only 40%. Either that, or she’ll face a lifelong nerve injury, but we can’t say how severe the impact will be. We have to take the risk.”

It's hard when some people, including doctors, talk about life-threatening diseases that MIGHT HAPPEN in the future. Anyone can face such situations. I've also experienced similar incidents in the past, and they took a toll on my mental health before I managed to improve it.
