    This one is in a little earlier than usual, but enjoy! And to those for whom it applies: Happy Thanksgiving! Next Thursday will feature the ESFP. Also, I am working on putting subtitles up for all of my videos for those who are interested. I am also planning on making a video with tips for typing people, an NTJ/NFP interaction video, and probably some short supplements or updates about some of the theories I'm using, for instance, a shorter video just about Fi and Fe, or something to that effect. I'm not sure when or what order these will be in, but it won't be too far in the future.
    I do not own the rights to any of the pictures.

    I'm an INFP with an ISFP best friend and you described our relationship and differences to a T, especially when it comes to our approach to art. I find that my friend is very concerned with aesthetic coherency and beauty's own sake, whereas I often feel compelled to spend time discussing the deeper themes in my works. She has to put up with a lot of my carrying on about my creative choices and I sometimes find her understated responses to things I think are profound disarming.
    From my personal knowledge I think INFPs are more prone to self-interested bluster, especially when it comes to their imagined worlds. I'm very egocentric, and aware of it, but I don't perceive my ISFP friend that way at all. In fact, between the two of us, she's far more reasonable and level headed then I.

    I posted this on the INFP page too, but let's put it out here as well. It's a bit rough and blunt, but here's one thing I've noticed about dom/aux Fi and a tip for dealing with Thinking types (esp. dominant Ti types like INTPs and ISTPs, but also INTJs and others). Hope it is useful:
    1. Be aware of the "Fi tilt". What this means is that if a Fi-dom is presented an idea that is a whole, some singular part of it may feel horrible, and Fi has a tendency to close off to the whole idea because of that one unacceptable part, even if taken as a whole it would fit well with what the Fi-dom considers good and desirable.
    2. Be careful when dealing with Thinking types: Even if you value logic and reason, and they think understanding others' feelings is important, a communication disconnect will almost inevitably happen. This is because Tx types are prone to making (what they think are) impartial evaluations of things, and tend to make strong statements about many things, while you tend to place good/bad evaluations in everyday language (that they find distasteful or are blind to)
    From your end, there are a few things that can be done to smooth out communication:
    Try to repeat to yourself that these statements they make are to describe how they see the world is right now, as if writing things down for a history book. It does not describe what they think is morally right and valuable or desirable. Simply how things are.
    Try to ask them separately how they feel about things (they like separating sentiment and logic, but sentiment in and of itself is ok), and try to express yourself in that manner as well.
    Basically:
    "It's stupid to go to Stabbytown at night and get mugged. A T type saying that does not mean that Stabbytown should stay bad like that, just that the current situation is that going to Stabbytown at night is a Bad Idea and as such should be avoided.
    Fi is prone to interpret this as them saying it's ok that Stabbytown is a shithole, and understandably ask the T type if they're perhaps crazy or don't give a shit about others. If you then say that you should be able to go to Stabbytown at night, T will go wtf in turn because yes, of course that would be desirable but the world is not a perfect place and Stabbytown happens to be a shithole."
    Worse example than I intended, but I hope it illustrated at least something. I think the INFP stack's biggest problems come from Fi's dominance and that it's otherwise a very problem-free stack that's easy and nice to develop. Fi is a good function but it has some idiosyncracies that it pays to be aware of. Deal with them, and most of your type's "type defects" are taken care of!
    Criticism welcome, fire at will ^^

      @anyone359 5 років тому +4

      Well almost every test says I am a feeler (INFP/ENFP/INTP) but in your example i would be the second one.
      I don't struggle with Thinkers. I like discussing. I want to exchange knowledge and get new information. I like questioning (my and other people's) values because i put so importance in having the "right" values.
      I don't care if i win an argument i just want to figure out what is true/right and gain knowledge. Most people don't get this. ENTPs usually do.
      I (think) i can discuss things very objectively, i do understand and see the reasons - but i don't follow them if they are in conflict with my Fi. Because I can't do this. Part of me dies when i ignore my Fi and makes me feel empty. I struggle with expressing myself but i can do it through art, music... Sometimes i don't know what i feel until i draw it.
      I like Ti-Types because they usually don't value social expectations (smalltalk, being polite...) it makes it easy to get along with them.
      What really challenges me are Fe-Types with their strong social skills and expectations. I feel like i have to fake a lot of happy emotions around them. I can't keep up with them. SJs imtimidate me (especially ESTJ). I always feel like they think i am a lazy, childish mess. ENTJs on the other hand are often sweeter than their reputation.

    Some of this doesn't particularly apply to me, or only indirectly... But some of it is SO me. In particular, the bit about the wallet. I didn't think much of it at first, but it really resonates with the way my mind works and how I go about things. I often expect people to understand what I'm doing or why (like, for example, I'm giving you your wallet so you should be GRATEFUL, not angry), and become frustrated when they don't, instead of explaining myself or the situation.

    Isfps most definitely would like to impose on the world, in a weird way though. Like, more opposition to authority than the desire to BE authority. Especially when not only is they're value true to them, but it's also valid to society. Then an isfp can very much impose on the world, but only so that way nobody can. Like steeling the keys to a car not to steel the car, but to make the car no one's. Like an isfp with evolved Te.

    ENTJ here. ISFP's are our duals (ISFj in Socionics). After watching your ENTJ video, I am interested in your thoughts on that. On the face of it, and from your respective descriptions, it seems surprising that the two types could understand each other, but I just met an ISFP, and she and I seem to be completely on the same page. Very different on the surface, but fundamentally alike.
    Incidentally, I thought your video on the ENTJ was spot-on. Except for the brutality and sadism parts. On the other hand, both my financial adviser and psychiatrist have told me they think that part is true, too.

    • @MichaelPiercePhilosophy
      @MichaelPiercePhilosophy  9 років тому +3

      Noodle Soup I'm glad you enjoyed the video! As for Socionics' concept of duality, I've found it seems to work by pairing types together who have the same attitude for all the functions, but in the reverse order. So, the ENTJ and ISFP both have Te/Fi and Se/Ni axes, but they repress each other's dominant functions. This, according to some, can be very attractive because they represent the underdeveloped part of the other person. Jung felt that such relationships were made so that the two involved don't have to worry about their inferior function anymore, because their other half would handle it. Jung felt that this prevented a person from developing their own inferior function and achieving individuation. But that is only what Jung thought; I don't believe I agree, I think its more likely being with such a person actually helps develop the inferior function in a very positive way, in which case it would be a very good relationship. Though, this is all theoretical, and I'm also not very familiar with duality. I'm planning to study it more and probably create a video about it, because of many people's interest in it.
      Having been intimately familiar with both an ISFP and an ENTJ, I can see why they would actually get along very well, because they prefer the same functional axes. Several others have mentioned to me that while they agree to some degree about the "brutality" of the ENTJ, they don't like that idea, and I agree with them. My experience with the ENTJ was not one of brutality or sadism whatsoever: he was a great guy and I was very comfortable with him. Yet the only way I can describe certain important aspects of him are "brutality", though I'm sure he would enjoy the word as much as you do. Rather like saying an ENFJ is "persuasive" or "people pleasing" can annoy them, because they don't mean it as such as they are right, but its the only word an outsider can think of to use. That's just my two cents.

    • @noodlesoup7490
      @noodlesoup7490 9 років тому +2

      Michael Pierce
      In the past three weeks, I've had a chance to spend more time with the ISFP dual, and I don't believe we repress each other's dominant functions. Not at all. Instead, we seem to admire each other's dominant functions, and with regard to the other's inferior functions, we naturally extend a hand and pull each other up. It seems to me we get the best of both worlds. One person can demonstrate and encourage the practical use of the other's weaker functions, while they themselves are learning from the other's strong functions. At least, that's how it feels to me.
      The best written description about ENTJ-ISFP duality I have found is here:
      www.the16types.info/vbulletin/content.php/374-Duality-Relations-ISFj-and-ENTj-by-Stratiyevskaya,
      and the best descriptions about duality between all of the types are here:
      www.the16types.info/vbulletin/content.php/17-Socionics-Duality-Descriptions-by-Meged-Ovcharov
      Socionics says that it is hard to meet your dual, because the respective spheres of interests do not much overlap, and I can vouch for that. When I first sat down with her, I thought we had absolutely nothing in common. My main concern was that things would go very wrong, very quickly. But after several hours of conversation over several days, I realized that we agree on what we see, we agree on what to do about it, there is mutual respect and there is no criticism. I've never experienced that before with any other type and, quite frankly, it is amazing.
      On another note, I'm not offended by the word "brutality". It may sound bad, but getting at and understanding the truth is my main concern, rather than sparing my feelings over a semantic point. I've been described in worse terms. If you want to soften the description to appease your critics (and not because I'm offended, because I'm not), I think many people use the word "direct". But "brutality" may actually be a better word, because it implies "direct action, without regard to feelings, with an aim toward a final resolution of the problem". That's me to a Te ;) and may explain why some Fi is needed.

      I am an ISFP and I married an ENTJ. We do very much compliment each other; where I lack, my ENTJ half will rise (and vice versa.) We also see the world somewhat similarly and come to the same conclusion on things - for the most part. As an ISFP I'd rather not take charge for a lot of things; major life decisions, for instance, is a perfect example. We think about what we need to do, come to a similar conclusion, and my partner does all the big picture stuff while I handle the little details. It's truly a great partnership. I am however sensitive and I can find my ENTJ to be aggressive at times and become that person to 'layout' their truth/opinion/facts/perception. And the ISFP in me will be that arguing person in return. It can get a little intense but it rarely happens.

If someone tells me they can`t do things, i tell them "how can you know, you change every day" So maybe that is why he persisted. And in the end it turned out right, so. :) thank you for your answer. I think a high F, particularly Fi signifies a talent for arts and artistic ability. In that vein, INFP uses mental Ne for mental/literal arts whereas ISFP uses physical Se for physical and fine arts such as music, drawing, painting, sculpture, dancing etc.

    Still struggling to type myself. I used to think i am an INFP but i realized that while i am senzitive i am not that empathetic. Like i care about people but only about people i know.I do Daydream but it’s simply because i am quite lonely and don’t have many friends,but when i engage in something i am 100% there. I am also not phylosophical and i am a bit shallow materialistic and very drawn to aesthetic. Even though i can’t really dance i noticed that when i dance or sing(i am a good singer though) i am most alive. Like then my whole confident self comes to life(as Beyonce would call”Sasha Fierce”). I tend to be a bit “two left handed” sometimes and i’m very drawn to art
    If i am not ISFP then I’ll go with a very shy ENFP

      It seems to me that it is not so much words or not, it is why words, and how words. When it comes to type.

      @@keaganwheeler-mccann8565 yes for me as an isfp as well, I LOVE words and to describe a situation with the right ones. just like michael says: I need to find the right expression for my visions, for them to make sense. However, like you I struggle with plot. I find certain concepts or situations to be more interesting to write about than putting together a whole book. That's why I usually end up with short stories or unfinished ideas that I get bored of. And poetry, written in the moment or created with a specific limited intention in mind, like a puzzle sort of.

    So you think C.S. Lewis was an INFP for sure? I have been reading him a lot recently and have always heard that he was an INTJ, but as an INTJ myself I have certainly noticed a lot of Fi in his arguments, maybe a little too much for an INTJ even though he is fairly logical.

      +Hannah! Hey! I think the best answer I could give to that is my Revisiting the INFP and INTJ videos -- having read C.S. Lewis, I find that they fits rather well in the INFP category with writers like Rousseau and Kierkegaard.

    Thank You also Michael for helping me understand myself better. Brilliant as always. :)
    As an ISFP, I have this intense sensitivity on the inside. And at times it can be more painful, stressful, exhausting, and depressing from being affected by emotions of others and taking in and processing too much information from both inner and outer worlds. Is it possible to somehow learn how to control this intense sensitivity?

    • @MichaelPiercePhilosophy
      @MichaelPiercePhilosophy  8 років тому +4

      +Rae Yee Thank you so much for the compliment -- I'm glad you've found my videos useful!
      As for your question...I'm terribly afraid that I don't know. I'm much better at describing how things are rather than how to make them better...but I can suggest that maybe it isn't so much a matter of controlling the sensitivity so much as learning how to deal with it better, or even sublimate it into a better form. In any case, my own experience with mental troubles like that has been that it takes time a patience, like correcting the course of a cruise ship takes time and patience for everything to manifest.

    so, an INFP's Ne world is much more vivid, colorful, detailed, defined, realistic, and sharable than an ISFP's Ni world? I thought I was an INFP but I have a really hard time visualizing stuff that's going on in D&D/Pathfinder without an understanding of the "physics" of the game. [and coming up with new characters and storylines is difficult for me] I thought that was what everyone struggled with to begin with and I just lacked the knowledge of the game to imagine the characters and landscapes properly. I know a girl that is really good at art and drawing fantasy stuff.. I thought that ISFP artists and INFP artists just typically focused on different things in their art.. INFPs on the abstract themes, the message, ect, while the ISFP worked more on getting the form just right, and enjoyed looking at art for the lines and colors. This and the INFP video give me the impression that: INFPs are more prone to be creative, and are always super talented writers and artists, while ISFPs have "spiritual experiences" and that their intuition runs deeper in ways.

    How is it like for ISFPs to have some sort of hazy inner vision?
    Certainly some sort of ideal expression in them triumphs extroverted sensing, something they really strive for, sometimes making some of them unhappy.

    • @MichaelPiercePhilosophy
      @MichaelPiercePhilosophy  9 років тому +9

      Leon Tsao Well, it manifests in the same way it does for INFJs or INTJs: Ni by its nature is "hazier" than Ne because its not dealing with objects but the impressions of objects. So like an INFJ or INTJ tend to have moments of intuitive certainty, but can't really pin down what led to their conclusion, or even get their conclusion out appropriately in language: ISFPs have that same feeling of having intuitive certainty about something but struggling with trying to express it.

    INFP here with a question. INFPs are usually thought of as being non confrontational, but in this video, the ISFP's suppressed Te (which INFPs also have) lead to an argument between an ISFP and the person in the house. Are ISFPs more confrontational than INFPs? (Maybe because of the different type of sensing they use, for some reason?) Or was it just an anecdote that doesn't really apply to the ISFPs overall nature when it comes to confrontation?

    • @MichaelPiercePhilosophy
      @MichaelPiercePhilosophy  9 років тому +1

      +Graham Hadden Good point; I would just treat this as an anecdote to demonstrate things, but its also worth pointing out that this was a rare occurrence for my ISFP acquaintance, which is part of what made it stick out in my mind more.

    • @robinsalario4372

      Graham Hadden, I know, my son is an infp and we speak of this often. If we are to undertake something we speak of the things that could happen and how we would react ( In a infp way) and then we just do ( In the isfp way). Afterwards we laugh about it together. :)

    • @Komatik_
      @Komatik_ 8 років тому +1

      +Graham Hadden The Se/Ni axis is more convergent and cocksure and certain of itself than Ne/Si typically is. Furthermore, if there's a function that isn't terribly needy of status, it's Ne. Se on the other hand has a tendency to want to be a presence, sometimes a bit of an alpha.
      I wouldn't say either type is terribly conforntative as a rule, and definitely handle confrontation differently (INFPs will paint the opponent as the devil, ISFPs will pout stubbornly or get physical, all else being equal)

      I'm actually not sure why either. I've been noticing that a decent amount of my friends are INTJ's, and I've never been able to put my finger on it. My guess is that the Introverted side helps to get common ground, but there's enough differences to make for interesting conversation.
