1998 Breeders' Cup Classic - Awesome Again + Pre & Post Race

  • On a day when Skip Away ran out of the money and lost his chance to become the world's richest race horse, Awesome Again won the world's richest race when he rushed through the pack in a blanket finish and snatched the $5.2 million Breeders' Cup Classic by three-quarters of a length over Silver Charm.
Awesome Again not only won the laurels and the loot, but also his sixth straight start in a perfect year at the races. To do it, he needed to make a furious dash through the homestretch and knife his way through the 10-horse field to hit the finish line in front.
But he did it, prevailing over one of the most impressive casts in racing history before a record Breeders' Cup crowd of 80,452 at Churchill Downs. And he redeemed an agonizing choice made a year ago by his trainer, Patrick Byrne, who dominated the 1997 Breeders' Cup with two juvenile winners, Favorite Trick and Countess Diana, and then gave them up to take a new job with Frank Stronach of Canada.
''Favorite Trick was a part of history,'' Byrne said with feeling, explaining again why he would surrender the Horse of the Year. ''I loved him. But I was faced with a decision that I had to make. That's what horse racing is all about.''
Racing is also about Skip Away, the 5-year-old superstar who will now retire with career earnings of $9.6 million, about $400,000 short of Cigar's record. But in his final performance at the races, just when he might have scored his greatest triumph, he stalked the leaders through most of the mile and a quarter but could not keep up and faded to sixth place.
As he did, the Classic was ending in high drama. Awesome Again crossed the line less than one length in front of Silver Charm, the winner of last year's Kentucky Derby, who won second place by the length of his neck over the 6-year-old Irish horse Swain. And Swain finished third by a nose over Victory Gallop, who won this year's Belmont Stakes. At the far end of the scale, the 6-year-old Argentine champion Gentlemen suffered pulmonary bleeding, was eased up by his rider, Corey Nakatani, and finished last in the final race of his career.
''I'm ready to cry, but I won't,'' said Sonny Hine, the trainer of Skip Away, who won nine straight races before losing the last two. ''I feel really bad about the horse. I thought he broke a step too slowly and, by the time they reached the first turn, I knew they were in trouble. I am disappointed for the horse. He gave me plenty.''

"Skip Away was like a child to the Hines. Carolyn fell in love with Skip Away, and the feeling seemed mutual. Carolyn could be standing off to the side of the barn, but if Skip Away heard her voice, he would poke his gray head outside the tall, turn in that direction and tilt his ears forward. 'Mommy loves you' she would say"

I wasnt a huge Skip Away fan, but i was so touched by Carolyn the previous yr when he won. As he was powering down the stretch and the tears ran down her face, i cried also. Skippy was a beast but he was his best behaved around her. Personally i felt bad for Swain, stupid Dettori kept hitting him left handed making him bear out so much and lose so much ground. If hed been straight he might have won. Great great race.

Swain traveled farther sideways than the margin of victory for the over rated Awesome Again. Then Silver Charm's jockey admitted he went too far out to hook up Swain which he considered the greater danger and Awesome Again again got lucky having the opening made for him. Stevens gave some of the worst rides I've ever seen, but also gave some of the best I've ever seen, Thunder Gulch in the Derby, he's in the 16 hole, 1st turn he's 2 wide! Also on Beholder in the Distaff, both, but especially the 2nd one on Beholder, and Silver Charm in the Derby, then he got outridden by McCarron in the Belmont! The Jockey's used to be so good! Irad would be in 4th or 5th place in the standings, if Competed against Stevens, McCarron, Pincay, and Eddie D... ♥️🙏🇺🇸

I thought I had it wired with Silver Charm and Swain (1/2 in that year's Dubai Cup) only to have those bums, Dettori and Stevens, ruin it for me (and for themselves, their owners and trainers). The best horse in the race was Silver Charm. Dettori and Stevens still should be doing some kind of penance for their miserable rides.
IMO this was the best field at 10f on the dirt in the US since the first Marlboro Cup.
And to all the miserable Least Coast Pat Day haters - Ha,ha

Yeah, if he doesn't engage Swain by running sideways, Awesome Again doesn't get that huge hole to run through. Unbelievably and uncharacteristically poor decision making by Stevens.

Venckman, it was almost a replay of the Belmont. He focused on one horse and missed the other one. Sad for the big gray horse.

"Skip Away could not complete the fairy-tale ending, finishing sixth in the Classic. He retired with 18 wins in 38 starts, and earnings of $9,616,360,00 second only to Cigar. But the strenght of his record throughout the year-coupled, no doubt, with the memory of his overpointing victory in the Classic the previous year- at last placed the crown for Horse or the Year atop Skip Away's head"

He never ran well at Churchill. But that performance was in no way dulled the brilliance of his record.

Worst ride ever by Gary Stevens! SC looks the winner past the 1/8 pole, you know he's got no quit, yet he decided to follow Swain to the outside rail, open it up for the winner, and most importantly of all,got away from the good part of the track( middle) which had received alot of rain...
