You just gotta love the Missouri and crew! So funny...and very festive. This is a good looking salty...but then the Borg fleet usually always look well maintained...
@@carolyndavis7476 Love the Missouri! Vlieborg is very good looking! The narrow width definitely helps with maintenance, they have a lot more room in the locks. Plus it seems like Wagenborg has some sort of relationship with the Dutch Government, so they’re always sure to put on their best face!

Old Frosty was on duty for this arrival it seems. Paul had the Grinch on one of his postings the other day. That aside, you done real good on this one. Thanks for including the drive/walk up through the neighborhood. Love that stuff.
I sure enjoy standing beside you to see what's going on in the canal and harbor!!! If only we had smell vision and/or a chilly breeze blowing on us. Thank you for the experience..
Did Missouri come out just so Frosty could get on your channel, Jon? 😅 Vlieborg really is a great looking ship, and I always love getting to see her. I was hoping to catch her coming out of the lock but I couldn't work it into my schedule.
Love the Missouri and her crew! Still waiting to see if you get one of the new Damen Stan tugs up there to join the rest of the Great Lakes Towing fleet.
They have a couple newer ones in Cleveland to help ships with the tight turns. Not sure Duluth will get a new one for awhile, they’re only really used for salties since all the lakers up here can basically do everything without assistance so sometimes the tugs don’t have a lot or anything to do, even if the port is busy
It’s an inverted-dreadnought style bow that’s become more and more common with salties designed to sail on both the oceans and the Lakes. The typical ocean vessel bulbous bows don’t work as well in freshwater and cause issues in the locks, but the completely flat bows that work best for lakers would cause issues on the oceans, so this design works fairly well in both environments. Used to be popular in the World War 1 era and has come back in recent years!
I believe it’s what’s left after the sugar is refined out, they use as a food base similar to corn in the US. I know it’s used in some animal feeds, might have some use in human foods as well but not sure
@@jonathanellsworth21 It sounds like the apple pulp we have left after making cider. We trade it with a local cattle farmer for beef. Beet pulp must be awfully nutritious, and awfully cheap, for a salty come so far to get it and go so far to wherever it's taking it. Thank you .
Some small boats have, fishing/cabin cruisers or pleasure boats but nothing larger has directly hit that I’m aware of. Several ships have hit the piers near the base of the bridge, most recently Presque Isle in 2020, but none of those actually hit the bridge structure

Interesting design of the bow. Is that to deflect waves?

Why did thus ship need tug assistance but the larger ships don't? Bow thrusters??
@@ScottStrange-k8o Lake ships have thrusters, while oceangoing ships (with a couple exceptions) don’t
