Duluth’s First True Container Ship- Ever! History Made!
While Duluth opened its container port capabilities in 2022 and has had limited container traffic in the past, it’s always been extremely limited and included with a larger industrial equipment order on board a multi-use bulk/heavy lift freighter up until this point. Today changed that, with the port welcoming its very first dedicated, all container ship! Even though her deck wasn’t exactly piled high with containers on her way in, she had a few up there, indicating her holds inside are full, also shown later as she was being unloaded. I’d say it’s likely she had a full load of containers originally but dropped off a partial load at either Montreal or Cleveland, the region’s other two container capable ports but I didn’t follow her voyage close enough to confirm that, wasn’t expecting this! The arrival is a massive deal for the City of Duluth, which has been trying to attract attention to this area of the harbor’s capabilities for years now, and we’ll see if this is a one-off deal or if this expands into a more major part of the city’s business! She also gets bonus points for having the season’s first frozen horn salute on the coldest morning so far, 15 degrees! She tried clearing them out but the Bridge responded anyway so they called it good lol.
As for the ship, Peyton Lynn C is a small 461x77ft containership, built in 2007. She operates primarily in Europe, although this is not her first foray into the Great Lakes. In 2021 she operated a briefly lived Cleveland-Montreal and Europe container run, at the time Cleveland was the only container capable port on the Lakes. With Duluth and possibly other ports now joining in, they might be giving this another shot! It would be great to get another industry up and going in the Lakes and we’ll see if she returns. If it doesn’t work out long term, at least we got to see her though! Cross our fingers and hope for the best!
Hope everyone enjoys!

Middle of the Night Ship Watching

Been awhile since I’ve seen Manitoulin on the Duluth side (although she’s been in Superior a few times), and since I couldn’t sleep anyways and needed a break from restless tossing and turning, I decided to hop down to the Canal to see her off in the post midnight hours! The ex-tanker set out quietly into the night with iron ore, her spotlights ablaze and not much else for illumination! She is ...
After the Storm: Paul R Tregurtha departing into a Confused Lake

Celebrating 6k Subscribers! After heavy winds and waves all day long, the Paul R Tregurtha departed with her coal into the lake. The Lake itself was rather… confused. After intense gales coming off the lake for most of the day, just before sunset the winds abruptly shifted to coming from the harbor side, completely opposite direction and with decent force. The result was the large waves left ov...
Winter (And the American Century) Arrive in Duluth for a Magical First Snow of the Season

Been awhile since I did a longer video showing the mood at the Canal, and this one left me peaceful and happy! Early season snowfalls just have a certain magic, even if it just melts as soon as it hits the ground. The air feels muffled and quiet, the flakes absorbing a lot of sound. The flakes hitting you are cold, but not uncomfortably so, not like the sticky wet flakes of spring. Given the pe...
An Unusual and Very Intense Broadside Gale Halts American Century Mid-Departure

This was an unusual sight, at least for me! All the gale force winds I’ve seen have come from the east, directly off the lake, accompanied by large waves. This one came from the north, and even though only about a 3/4 of a mile of water stood between the shore and piers, not to mention downtown and the 700ft tall hills that usually serve as wind blocks, it was still powerful enough to get the l...
November Moods! Midnight Arrival in Frozen, Driving Rain (Plus explosion information in description)

To start out with, the Port of Duluth had a major accident last night (11/18/24). At about 6:13pm there was a very large explosion at the Viterra Grain dock and elevator in Superior, sending a fireball hundreds of feet into the air, visible from up to 10 miles distant and was heard like thunder in much of the city, even through the strong, near gale force winds. No cause has been determined but...

The second trip doesn’t look like it’ll end as smooth, winds are picking up in what could be the first Western Superior gale of the winter. C...

Lake Superior’s Fury: Honoring the 49th Anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald (The Storms of 2024)

Duluth may not exactly get the biggest waves that Lake Superior can create (usually) due to the orientation of the lake and prevailing wind direction, but the infamous Gales still blow here from time to time, and when they do it gives a taste of the fury talked about by mariners sailing the much rougher open waters at the Lake’s heart. The ships that sail the Lakes rarely use the Canal in the w...

Just joking of course! I love ships showing off but wow this was almost brutally over the top lol! @@BillWendell-y5c sorry, reality doesn’t always match Hollywood lol. This was very much a gale, very strong winds particularly off shore. The Canal is partially protected but they’re only in it for a minute or two. They had a rough trip, especially further out. I heard even within sight of the city she had waves breaking over her deck, before she even got out of what’s usually considered the more sheltered area of the lake. The massive waves that would affect a ship of this size like you see in movies are much further out in open waters, far out of sight of land. But that’s all moot anyway since the term Gale refers to wind, not waves
