Waterloo is in Belgium and the Battle of Waterloo was in 1815 when the British and Prussians defeated Napoleon Bonaparte and the First French Empire. I'd really recommend trying to go for some ABBA music videos with their songs, they add a lot to the experience.
Sad day for France
this was the song that made abba famous they won the 1974 eurovision song contest with this and then released it as their first record
"released it as their first record"
No, their first record was Ring Ring 1973
I remember watching that live
Nice to see BJ did attend school
If I remember right from school. Waterloo is a town near Brussels in Belgium where Napoleon was defeated. The band are Swedish.
Whenever I hear ABBA I can transported back to the 70's and 80's🎶🎵✨😍
I hit this video so fast. They're from Sweden. You guys should check out "Fernando". ABBA is a great rabbit hole to go down. Their music is my pick me up/ go to when I'm driving and feeling incredibly bored.
I first heard this sing in the movie "Muriels Wedding" about a geeky girl who loves Abba. She performs this song at a talent show. Fun movie.
ABBA is a Swedish pop/disco group formed in 1972. The lead female singers are Agnetha Fältskog (the blonde in their videos) and Anni-Frida Lyngstad. The lead males are Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. The group's name is an acronym of the first letters of their first names ('A'gentha 'B'enny 'B'jorn 'A'nni). Even though they only had a 10 year run, they are one of the most successful groups in music history having reportedly sold upwards of 200 million records, depending on the source you refer to. They have an INCREDIBLE catalog of fantastic songs -- pop, disco, ballads, etc...!
ABBA has sold more than 40000000, album. After breakup 1982 and forward to 2021 they sold about 2000000 records every year WOW AMAZING 🎶 ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ABBA FOREVER 🎶
they are not all Swedish
Waterloo was in Belgium. But it became a saying, that when someone got beaten “they met their Waterloo”, ABBA are from Sweden by the way😉👍
The 70s had it all , hard rock , soft rock , progressive rock , r&b , ballads and disco . and it was ALL good ,
It was so good because there was so much competition.
The 70' one of the best years of our lifetime. Lots of memories.
Do not forget Sansui, Marantz, Pioneer, Akai, Rotel, Toshiba, Bose, Fisher, Kenwood, Hitachi receivers, turntables. speakers, tape decks to play those great tunes. The 1970s' was the golden age of home audio.. I dig my Realistic STA2100 receiver.
*the original waterloo is in belgium, but there’s at least one waterloo in america too, in the neighbouring provinces of ontario and quebec in canada for instance, so she’s not wrong*
BJ you are correct as to the meaning of this song. Like usual.
Abba is maybe the best band ever, so big all over the world, they did new songs now after didn't have done that for 40 year, Fernando, dancing queen, mama Mia, many great songs, greetings from abba country, Sweden 🇸🇪
Yes good job on catching the jest of the song .yes ABBA is very clever with all thier lyrics some lyrics are deep and other songs just fun .
You picked a very big rabbit hole to go down. Swedish group from the 70's. One of the most popular in the world. You should check out their videos to get a true sense of them. My fave Abba tunes are Summer Night City, Does You Mother Know, Name of the Game, Voules Vous, Gimmie Gimmie Gimme (A man after midnight), Under Attack, and Dancing Queen. Have fun - and welcome to the world of Abba.
They're a Swedish band, the biggest act in the world in their time only behind the Beatles in terms of record sales.. They're back this 2021 and competing for the Grammy Record of the year with the likes of Justin bieber and Olivia Rodrigo etc.
The problem with lyric videos, you do not get to see who is singing. Check out the official video of them to get a visual of ABBA. ABBA comes from the first initial of all 4 members' names.
There is a Railway Station in London called Waterloo. Did you know there were 21 places in America called Glasgow and one called Edinburgh.
Waterloo is a city in Belgium…it mark the end of the French Empire….one of the most famous battles in World History in took place in 1815 when Napoleon was defeated by England and Prussia
"You and your comedy"....BJ cracks me up 👀
Love Abba 🎶🎵 piano and horns are always 🔥🔥🔥
BJ got the message....well done! Opposing message is ABBA's great hit song 'The Winner Takes It All'
Fun fact: At Eurovision, Waterloo didn't get any points from Belgium, the country where Waterloo is presently located.
Yes, not from UK - and there is no country ABBA had more number1-hits than Belgium. Cheers Paulo!
One of the greatest bands of all time. So huge in the 70s and 80s. Out selling all others. Hard not to like their music.
I've always enjoyed their music. Nice tight harmonies.
The song celebrates the city of Waterloo, Iowa, where many U.S. presidential candidates "face their Waterloo" in the Iowa caucuses.
Hello, nice to see you for first time with your first reaction to ABBA songs
ABBA is a swedish pop group that recording between 1972/1982, and after almost 40 years return to record a new album that now is a worldwide success
ABBA is acronim with initials of names:
A Agnetha blonde singer
B Björn guitarist songwriter
B Benny pianist songwriter
A Anni Frida brunette singer
They was two couples too, that divorced before the end of the group
"Waterloo" (1974) is one of my favorites, and is in my Top 5 of all ABBA songs
(with S.O.S. , Dancing Queen, Chiquitita & The winner takes it all)
and I think that is the song that change history, not only for ABBA, for Sweden and Eurovision too
"Waterloo" was the song that ABBA wrote especially to participate in the annual Eurovision Song Contest
By the rules of the competition the songs could not exceed 3 minutes
and ABBA made a masterpiece!
ABBA sing it in Swedish, for the local selection in Sweden (February 1974)
and finally ABBA sing it in English in the final held in England (April 1974) before 16 artist and songs from all over Europe.
it's a link to that historic moment:
ua-cam.com/video/Vp1_OKawHYw/v-deo.html
"Waterloo" and ABBA win Eurovision for the first time for Sweden
It will be Their first big worldwide hit: #1 in UK and half Europe (also South Africa), and Top 10 in U.S., Canada, Australia , New Zealand and the rest of Europe
ABBA recording "Waterloo" in swedish, english, german and french
Several years later, in 2005, to the 50th Eurovision anniversary, "Waterloo" was chosen as the Best Song in all the history of Eurovisión
"Waterloo", with all the songs of my Top 5, and 14 more songs, was included in ABBA recopilation album 'GOLD' that a few mounth ago arrives to 1000 weeks of permanence at Top 100 in UK Official Charts (first group singer or artist to do it in UK)
I hope you have a nice weekend
Kind regards from
Buenos Aires Argentina
South América
Frida is not Swedish she is Norwegian and German
Abba songs were a big part of the soundtrack during my jr. high and high school years. They have some good ones! And fun fact, I'm originally from Iowa where there is a city (not far from where I lived) named Waterloo! There are probably cities named Waterloo in other states as well!
ABBA is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with record sales estimated to be between 150 million and 385 million sold worldwide[13][14] and the group was ranked 3rd best-selling singles artists in the United Kingdom with a total of 11.3 million singles sold by 3 November 2012.[15] ABBA was the first group from a non-English-speaking country to achieve consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.[16] They are the best-selling Swedish band of all time[17] and the best-selling band originating in continental Europe. ABBA had eight consecutive number-one albums in the UK. The group also enjoyed significant success in Latin America and recorded a collection of their hit songs in Spanish. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, the first and only recording artists to receive this honour from outside an Anglophone country.[18] In 2015, their song "Dancing Queen" was inducted into the Recording Academy's Grammy Hall of Fame.[19]
👏👍Waterloo is in Belgium, Napoleon fought against British and Prussians 🤗
No, Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo, Iowa, where they make John Deere tractors. Don’t confound Americans with world history
@@billsbus827 Wow! That's why John Deere has so large expansion in Europe, good job then... 😁
BJ has nailed it.. here in the Uk sometimes people say they met their waterloo when something defeated them.
Its in Europe. Battle took place in year 1815. British with Wellington won over French with Napoleon. After being defited Napoleon was captured and inprisoned on island St. Helens, where he eventually died
I MET MY WATERLOO, MUSIC WISE IN 1974. I WAS SOLD ON THE SPOT, WHEN THEY EXPLODED THROUGH THE TV SET, WITH THOSE COSTUMES, AND BJØRN WITH HIS SILVER STAR GUITAR🤩🤩🤩🤩
You have to watch the videos to really appreciate ABBA. Those girls were something else.
and another comment about what is and means Waterloo
It was a conceptual and marketing idea that the ABBA manager had
He was looking for an impact title, known in Europe and easy to remember, to help its future dissemination
and he finds it in Waterloo, which is the most historical important and iconic battle held in Europe in 1815, when the troops of the French Emperor Napoleon were defeated by the Anglo-Prussian coalition in the fields of Waterloo (present-day Belgium) and ended the reign of Napoleon in all Europe
the song would be an allegory and compares the surrender of Napoleon with the surrender of a woman to her love for hers beloved
and it was!
Waterloo was the most icónic song (and ABBA the most icónic perfomance) in all Eurovisión history between 1956/2021
Good reaction, We want more reactions from ABBA!!!
BJ, your explanation is so explicitly SPOT ON! What a pro!
Super catchy describes ABBA perfectly......every song
Man this is old I'm 59 remember going to the roller-skating rink at Redcliffe north Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺 when I was a kid. They would play ABBA a lot carefree days, Americans would love Redcliffe it's a medium sized sea town still a great place. 👍 My daughter still lives there I see her regularly.
Hi from Lake Macquarie NSW! I'm 59 too and ABBA was huge whilst in high school. Actually us Aussies were their biggest fans! Redcliffe is where The Bee Gees lived!
Really need to also do the video !!! as half the fun is just watching These songs being preformed as ABBA was one of the first groups to make music videos even before M TV came out !!, AS the women refused to travel and go on tour due to children and raising their families....Please do more ABBA ,DANCING QUEEN ,WINNER TAKES IT ALL , and SUPER TROOPER and THANK FOR THE MUSIC.....ALSO noted that English is a second language for them as they are from SWEDEN.!
Only Agnetha and Bjorn had 2 kids. Freida and Benny didn't
I am so glad to see an educated reactor! Great stuff!
That song won them the Eurovision contest would set them on their way to fame
The voices of two angels.
The battle of Waterloo was the battle that ultimately brought Napoleon to an end; never to rise again. He spent the rest of his life banished and imprisoned on an island.
One of the top groups in the teen years of my life.
In 1973, 'Wizzard' had a song called 'See My Baby Jive', which was a Number 1 hit here in the UK. ABBA acknowledged its influence on "Waterloo" the following year and the rest is history as you might say :)
I hope you guys can do many more ABBA reactions, its SOOO good music they have,so many good pearls, hidden gems, fantastic music..
"Waterloo" won the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 for Sweden, beginning ABBA's path to worldwide fame. It topped the charts in several countries, and reached the top 10 in the United States.
2:39 Is that (Waterloo) here in America?" Hahahaha...
This song is important for ABBA because they won a national competition in Sweden and it gave them a recording contract that they had to win. It is what allowed them to become professional musicians and stars.
So yes, they are singing in English as if it was their native language but it is not. They have always had the ability to master any language while singing. Try looking up Spanish and French versions of any song sung by them.
Why is the beat so happy but the lyrics are sad?
That's like 80% of ABBA songs hahahahaha
For the lead singer of ABBA, it's both women. However when the men thinks one song is suited for a certain lead they give it to her and vice versa. Overall Agnetha has more leads than Frida but they always back each other up.
ABBA has also been credited with having a third voice. It's Agnetha and Frida together. Their two voices harmonize unlike any thing I've heard in the music industry cause they use the wall of sound where there are sometimes 2-4 layers of vocals between the two leads, making it sound perfect. It's very unique to them.
This song was sung by Abba at the European battle of the bands, which won them a record deal, and the rest is history.
B.J. you hit the nail on the head with the meaning of this song. Love me so ABBA!!
Waterloo is located in Belgium and It's the place where Napoleon was ultimately defeated by the englishmen lead by the Duke of Wellington. Every primary student in Europe knows it. Not in USA? Maybe you would say Alamo. Waterloo is the epitome of a military defeat (in Italy we have Caporetto, also, in WWI)
There was a big singing contest in europe and they won with this song.
ABBA's catalogue of hits worldwide is huge and ridiculously good! Their collection album ABBA Gold has been in the UK top 100 for over 1000 weeks.
You need to see them in action, try any of their 20 worldwide number 1's
Gimme Gimme Gimme, Mamma Mia, SOS, Dancing Queen, Fernando, Chiquitita, Knowing Me Knowing You, Money Money Money,, The Name of the Game,The Winner Takes it All, Super Trouper, Take a Chance on Me, I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do, One of Us, Ring Ring, Summer Night City, I have a Dream, Head Over Heels, Don't Shut Me Down.
But really, dozens of other superb tracks including Voulez Vous, I Am The City, Eagle, The Day Before You Came, Lay All Your Love On Me, So Long, Does Your Mother Know, ... you get the idea!
If you want to see what the band looked like in their heyday try the vid 'If it wasn't for the nights original broadcast 1978 ' in Japan.
Every time they sing the word Waterloo, it is saying she surrenders to his love.
You HAVE to do "Dancing Queen" by ABBA, and the official video, not just lyrics. It's their biggest hit. But, they had so many, it's a pretty deep rabbit hole.
BJ you're spot on with your discretion .
And back after 40 with a new lap check out
Just a Notion
Do more ABBA, and watch the official videos. You won't be disappointed
Waterloo was not only a defeat for Napoleon, it was his final defeat. That's what makes it important. To meet your Waterloo is to suffer a final defeat. I guess it's a phrase not in common use anymore, but I would guess that everybody through at least Generation X is familiar with it.
Asia, NO QUESTION 🙋🏻♀️ IS STUPID ❤️
We only learn if we ask questions when we don’t use something. 🙏❤️🙏
ABBA is my favorite band IN THE WORLD 🌎 for over 40 years ❤️
Thank you for reacting to ABBA 👍
And BJ, you are 💯 right with your commentary 👍
Love ❤️ from Iceland 🇮🇸 🦋🦋🦋
BJ! Are you a teacher in any capacity? If not, you need to be! You are not only incredibly smart, but you are funny and gentle at the same time. That is such a winning combination! You both make such a super pair I enjoy your fun banter and all your postings 😄😃
ABBA!!!!!!!
You guys should check out "Eagle" or "The Day Before You Came" by ABBA. These are lesser known than their hits but are amongst the best of their work.
BJ you hit the meaning of the song right on the head thank you for your reaction
I'm Scandinavian from Denmark 🇩🇰 sow ABBA is impossible not too know 🤣
The original Waterloo is now in Belgium. Since the allied victory there are a few more around the world, about 30 in the USA alone.
...you haven´t missed one of the best selling bands ever, have you?
Please listen to any other song - they are all fantastic!
Have you both listened to the funky ABBA tune "My Momma Said"? Also from the same 1974 Waterloo Album. How this track fell through the cracks is beyond me. Check out the funky guitars.👍
More Abba !!!
More ABBA, history and geography!
Waterloo is in today's Belgium, formerly part of the Kingdom of Netherlands at the time of the battle. ABBA are the best ever.
Asia Waterloo is in Belgium
Great reaction hope everyone had a great thanksgiving
The production of this song is based on ' See my Baby Jive' by the British group Wizard. So Stig Anderson Abbas producer says and you can hear the similarity.
Abba won the Eurovision song contest in 1972 with this song in Brighton, England
How can you NOT like Abba. And I'm predominantly a metal head.
Loved your reaction! Please react to some more other ABBA bangers - LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME, CHIQUITITA, S.O.S., SUPER TROUPER, GIMME GIMME GIMME (A Man after midnight, TAKE A CHANCE ON ME, DANCING QUEEN, THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC etcetcetc), The sinegers are mainly Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad
LOL @ she's singing in American. In your defence, almost everyone sounds Canadian to me when they sing in English. But as has been mentioned, Waterloo is in Belgium.
yes, BJ your analysis is correct. She tried to fight against the growing love she felt but couldn't fight it anymore. She succumbed to LOVE! she was defeated trying to defeat the feeling!. Waterloo is the metaphor from a strategic battle that Napolean lost which resulted in the defeat of the French Army trying to take over all of Europe.
BJ always impresses me with his general knowledge 👍🏻
Happy music with sad story of love.
Abba was two ex-husbands writing songs that put words in their ex-wives mouths. You won't find that very often.
At the time of their fame they were married.
@@eviekelpie1 Well, Björn and Agnetha were separated already in 1979, i.e. before they did the US tour and the Japan tour. So they worked together for about three years as separated (say early 79 to early 82). Much the same for Benny and Frida actually. Björn and Agetha also had kids, so they celebrated christmas and such together, according to themselves.
@@herrbonk3635 Yes that's right they did get separated before the finish of ABBA . Yes Agnetha and Bjorn had 2 children before they began ABBA.
@@eviekelpie1 Not really before Abba. Their kid Linda was born in 1973, about a year into the Abba-period, although before their large international break into the anglo saxon world.
But they worked together already in 1969, for some studio recordings, although not as Abba. They also had a cabaré group of sorts they called Festfolket in 1970 :)
@@herrbonk3635 I've watched their documentaries and yes here in Australia they really didn't hit the mark until 1974. We were their biggest record buyers. Then they toured here and it went crazy!
Also check out these from ABBA "Does Your Mother Know" + "Voulez-Vous" + " I Have a Dream" +
There is a place called Waterloo, Iowa..lol..everytime I go there I sing this to myself.
Oh my dear. Saying "what is Waterloo?" is like saying "what happened in Pearl Harbor?".
VERY GOOD WITH HISTORY
Love ABBA!!!
Proud of you both
Love has won her over. She can no longer resist his love. She has given up the battle to fight falling in love with him and has admitted defeat. She is comparing her defeat to that of Napoleon's defeat in battle at Waterloo,Belgium in on June 18, 1815. And now with her defeat, history is repeating itself.
Y'all are so awesome to watch keep it forever 🤘🤘🤘
ABBA,(initials taken from each of their names), were one of the most successful pop groups in the 70s. Huge here in Australia. 2 married couples. BJ, 2 females singing. From Sweden, and it's a fact they were Sweden's largest export besides Volvo cars. This song won them the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974. Check out,
Mamma Mia
Honey Honey
Ring Ring
pure joy
This is a Swedish group. They were singing in English b4 they knew English fluently.
You guys should do a live versions reactions all the time, at least for old songs, you can't really feel the vibes and magic from that time period, with a simple lyrics screen...
I would like you to react to a Spanish singer her name is Diana Navarro. She is a very versatile singer who sings different musical styles with a very personal voice and with an incredible melismas and capacity of air. On this occasion I recommend you the song "El perdón" (Forgiveness).
I love you guys, thank you for digging into the lyrics meaning
BJ is 'on the nose' - totally correct with his explanation of Waterloo as a battle of love.
ABBA is the 3rd Biggest selling Group in history.
