Extremely impressive to be getting accuracies down to a few tenths, It would be interesting to see if the first test having higher comparable variance has something to do with the arm being just turned on and experiencing thermal expansion and if it would be better after having already warmed up.
Very nice robot you've built. Regarding accuracy of industrial robot arms such as Kuka, ABB, Fanuc etc isn't that great anyways, at 2m movement they can be off by several mm. With absolute accuracy they generally specify 0.5mm. They have very good repeatability though especially considering the payloads they handle. Your's seem to have great repeatability too.

What small 6 axis robot arm will hook hook up to the Intel Compute Stick 2 the USB flash drive stick. A affordable one for home use though. I had a 6 axis robot before but want one that all have to do is plug this flash drive in and all I have to do is program it.

Hello, I am trying to build my own robotic arm, the design is different but I am using almoat the same motors and planing to use the TMC 2209. Could you please recommend a genuine place to buy them? Also, if you think there is a better driver for me, your suggestion will be really appreciated.
Is there a way to increase the payload in this robotic arm without bigger changes? I would love to have around 1kg = 5x higher. Do you think there is a way to make it with your model? And i dont know if i missed it, but can you tell how much the robotic arm would costs around? And how much infill do you use on the 3d printed parts?
I think the maximum, what is possible to do with current design, is to add active cooling and increase the current on the motors. But this is not going to increase the payload 5 times. A think it could increase the payload by 50% maximum. I have an idea for the next robot arm. I plan to use brushless motors. And I hope to have the payload around 2kg. I plan to start building it this month, but I cannot tell exactly how long it will take to develop it. I hope to finish it by July.
For the plastic parts I use 50% infill. About the cost it is around 400 dollars, and this price does not include 3D printed parts, does not include bolts and nuts, and other small components and it does not include the shipping costs. This is cost for motors, drivers, belts, carbon fibre parts, bearings and electronics. My first robot (yellow one) made out of PLA. And the last one (orange one) is made out of PETG. I tried to use ABS before, but I had bad experience with it, and now I try to avoid it.

Also, using different paths and acceleration curves to the same destination point in 3D may be interesting. Honestly, it should be no big expectations with open loop control, even with this big steppers and carbon stiffeners...
thelittlebigoneru, what do you mean by this? 3D printers works just fine in open loop control. And with Trinamic drivers it is possible to detect collisions and skipped steps. So, with the Trinamic drivers this is not completely open loop. This robotic arm is designed to be affordable in price. And it was not designed to have all the possible features. You are welcome to take my design and improve it. :)
3D printers have limited and constant 'payload' for its drives. With Trinamic, it will be a way better. But, now even BLDC servo is not rocket science. Enabling technology is single-chip hall-based rotary encoders with absolute angle readout and 16-bit resolution.
How?! 1Nm = 0.1 kg.m. On 30cm arm it can lift only 300grams, and this is at maximum torque. This means that the motor will heat up fast, and would not be able to work continuously.
@@Skyentific sorry my mistake, but with your belt reduction it should be able to lift about 1kg much more than you've demonstrated in the video, anyway how is the backlash on that robot arm?

It is pretty common for stepper motors - they cannot apply the same torque at high speeds. Also there can be problems with pulse generators - for high speed you need very high frequency pulse with low jitter.
Also Arduino sketch on github may have some problems. Although Arduino can produce low jitter pulse, it requires some special programming methods, which 3d printer firmware like Marlin uses (not just Arduino delays everywhere).
Insufficient testing. You must test the repeatability with the arm fully extended. Then test the repeatability with complex movements between the measurements. And, most important, I did not see a slack test...
All the files are online ( github.com/SkyentificGit/SmallRobotArm ). Thus everyone can make the same :). And one of my viewer already made two robots like this one.

Thank you for your support. It was stepper motor skipping steps. It has small Nema 11, which is not very powerful.

Good question. I think It took me two or three full months, spread over half year period. This is my most complicated project yet.

That NEMA 23 with 1Nm of torque and a lever of 30cm should be able to lift a few kilos on it's own without the gear reduction
Yeah, but thats not the stepper that was losing steps, he uses nema 11 and 8 steppers in other axis
