    TWO Errors I realized after posting:
    1) Kingdom of Uraya was written by the same guy who made the Torna Battle Theme, Kenji Hiramatsu! Not Mitsuda. So this video is a comparison between two composers rather than the same guy, uh oh.
    2) There's a part in the Kingdom Of Uraya section where I mistakenly talk about "bending" on Woodwinds. Since we're talking about Woodwinds, I think that's a "slide", not a "bending", sorry about that! If you bend a woodwind instrument, I'm pretty sure it would break.

      @@AlexMoukalaMusic I do strongly agree. It was his first project where he actually got to do the OST after being the Sound Director for the Mana series, and he was so intent on being an impressive job so he could land more music work, he over did it. There's a lot of history in the development of Chrono Trigger.

      It actually changes for Mitsuda a little after he finished Xenogears ost, after ending in hospital during two weeks after finishing it, completly exhausted and almost dying from it. He achieved Chrono Cross ost without all of those issues, free to take his time, and achieving his work just as he wanted, and that's probably why up to now, Chrono Cross is probably one of his most famous work as a compositor, and one of the most impressible videogame ost ever made.
      I'm really happy now he can works without putting himself in danger, that's really a wholesome guy, full of sensibility and energy, heck, the 20th anniversary concert of Xenogears, with him and all his band is the best videogame concert I ever saw, not as expensive or complex then other great videogame concert like NieR or Final Fantasy one, but you can litteraly see all of them enjoying this moment all together, with Mitsuda dashing from music instruments to another music instruments, playing alongside everyone else with a big smile, that's so wholesome to watch. And for every Xenogears fan, the last bit, with a simple music box playing "A distant promise", ending the concert, hit like a truck

Emulation is always an option, but you’ll want to emulate the SNES version because the SNES has very accurate emulation now. The Steam port when first released was very buggy, but I think they’ve been patched up and are good now. Also, in the newer releases (DS, Steam, Mobile) a little bit of the text was changed, and in my opinion, it got better. Steam and Mobile versions are also cheaper than the other systems.

      I think the only reason is that we simply don't have the perspective to appreciate it as much as people did back in the day, just like I'm trying to explain here!
      I guess this will be the fate for Persona 5, Bloodborne and FF7 Remake in 2050, in case videogames and their soundtracks will have as much of a technological advancement as they've gotten since the '90s.
      Those who witnessed them back in the day will still have that perspective to appreciate them relatively to the period the games came out, but newcomers probably won't appreciate them as much even if, at the time, they were absolutely incredible soundtracks.
      I guess the only way to make people appreciate the depth of a very old piece of work is to remake it in modern terms, all while preserving the soul of the previous version. Not easy at all, but quite frankly, very necessary IMO!

      It's an interesting experience - I played Chrono Trigger back in 2013 after being constantly told it was the best JRPG of all time. And while it certainly was a good game and I appreciate it more over time, but it was hard for me to put it up on the same pedestal because how can ANY game live up to the hype of being the best of its genre after over 20 years? I also didn't play it the same way other people of the time would have played it - I didn't go back and explore all the ng+ routes, and I ruined part of it for myself by finding out I missed out on the best weapons by opening certain chests early. Looking back it definitely is incredible for its time, and it still holds up today, but it's never going to be that "best game ever" for me like it might have been had I played it when it came out.
      Granted I had the same experience with FF6, FF7, Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past, Super Metroid, really any game of the snes/n64/ps1 era.

    Watching you break down these tracks without having played the game is like observing a Blind scientific trial, and you totally nail the feeling behind Corridors of Time and show us all how it contributes to the experience you're presented with the first (and second) times you hear the track, this otherworldly sound. Narratively, graphically, and sonically, you're hit all at once with something that is in huge contrast with the rest of the game. This is one reason why, I think, we have such an emotional resonance with the track, and Corridors of Time is a pretty one of a kind piece for that reason.
    ...one of a kind except for Schala's Theme of course, which you also nail the similarities between and the emotion of - without spoiling anything, these two tracks come from the same area of the game, and both stand out to emphasize how important the events surrounding them are to the story as a whole.
    Ya know, Chrono Trigger is pretty short and extremely well paced, it'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on these two tracks in particular *after* experiencing them in context as well!

    It's amazing to me how you picked up on the pendulum sound of the music without having played the game. The title screen is a pendulum and it's one of the important symbols throughout. You should absolutely play the game because then you would also be able to pick up on the amazing leitmotifs used throughout the soundtrack!

    Alex, please, I am begging you. For both our sakes, take a listen to the Xenogears soundtrack.
    It's transcendental. Contemporary with FFVII, but composed in Mitsuda's Celtic and middle eastern-inspired style. It actually includes hymnal vocals in a couple places, just like FFVII did, but it also includes more of that "quirky sound" you described that is so keenly "video games" in nature.
    Even in its rather limited state (very few actual tracks compared to FFVII) it is amazing and mind-boggling. Each track has its own voice, but there enough chord similarities across the various instruments used to make the whole thing feel like a cohesive whole.
    I can barely scratch the surface of what makes the music great (hobbyist music student) and it would be amazing to see what you notice that I didn't.

    • @stephanieaensland6520
      @stephanieaensland6520 3 роки тому +1

      Oh! ALSO! Xenogears continues the tradition of heavy use of leitmotif that you noticed between "Corridors of Time" and "Schala's Theme". There's a reason that those two songs are so similar in their "pendular" construction, and it relates to the themes of both the game and that character in-particular. I know that leitmotif is less impressive to someone who doesn't have any context for the attached narrative, but it's still damn impressive to see how those themes are woven together in certain tracks.

    • @stephanieaensland6520
      @stephanieaensland6520 3 роки тому

      Okay, no, but seriously. It even does the stuff that you love with the bassline in a few tracks.

      definitely gotta second this. xenogears has remained my #1 for over 20 years (outer wilds may have replaced it but haven't decided yet--also great music but that's more emotional attachment probably) and that's in no small part due to the music.
      in addition to the game soundtrack itself i'd also really recommend the cried and myth arrangements.
      ultimately i think he should PLAY the big games mitsuda did the music for (at least xenogears, trigger, cross) but would love to see him at least listen. i've played games specifically because mitsuda was the composer. tsugunai and soma bringer come to mind as a couple i wouldn't have played without knowing mitsuda worked on them.

    Context is everything with Chrono Trigger's soundtrack. You really need to play it to understand the significance of the music, and being a masterpiece of a game that's only about 25-30 hours long (on a BLIND playthrough at that) and can be bought for only $15 on Steam, there's really no reason not to.
