My final team is chrono, robo, ayla... maximum damage... but... plotwise, marle, lucca and frog are better characters. And magus is good for fast normal battles, just lightning 2 almost everything
Frog and Magus have such a tragic backstory, you'd almost forget Luccas. Her sidequest broke me 20 years ago. The way she just sneaks off to do her own thing, trying to stop that terrible accident. If you save her mom she gets up out of her chair and walks around, whilst you never realized before why she didn't. And then on a second playthrough you notice how dark it is that the villagers joke about her inventions being dangerous. And how she comments on Robo not being evil by nature, shifting responsibility to the one who build him. It reveals the guilt she feels for not being able to save her mom all those years ago. "It's not the machines fault, it's mine." Top tier writing. Sobs and goosebumps.

I pretty much always use Marle in Death Peak so it was nice to see Frog's dialogue there. It's actually really good and makes me want to go back and do it with other party combinations

I am from your generation hi five lol. I remember getting this as a gift when the game released. Being a nerd back then sucked. We did not go around being proud of being nerds haha. 90s was magical but also tough in some ways.

I argue that because Lucca and Crono have a stronger relationship that the hug represents much more than what it does for when Marle does it. That doesn't necessarily mean it's better I just prefer it.

I'd say XBC1 and Chrono Trigger are both pretty competitive for the top spot, with DQ lagging behind a little (presuming we're talking about XI, I haven't played many of the others). Maybe CT would have the edge over XBC but I actually haven't played it since I was 14, even though I remember it being great! But it's like having to pick between all your favourite foods or something.

Even knowing what's going to happen after playing this game at least 30 times, I still tear up. Chrono Trigger has an epic sound track and gameplay that induces such a wide range of emotions. So glad you gout to experience one of THE best RPG's out there (I my personal opinion, of course). It was so fun to see the reactions from a first time player...especially when you actually realized Chrono was dead and took all the good stuff with him😂

Chrono Trigger is a masterpiece and the type of game that rarely gets made. Squaresoft joined Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball), Hironobu Sakaguchi (father of Final Fantasy), Yuji Horii (father of Dragon Quest), Nobuo Uematsu (You know him ;)) and Yoshinori Kitase (Director of a buncha FF, like VI, VII and VIII ). IT`S THE ABSOLUTE DREAM TEAM!
I would add Yasunori Mitsuda, big part of that amazing ost its his contribution being the youngest of them and chrono trigger being the first big proyect he worked, he did am amazing job
When first getting to Zeal. That's when a good game became a legendary game. It just blindsides everyone how the game gains so much more depth at such a clear cut spot.
by far, the best game story. from setting, to how nothing is overplayed, to even how it flows. no other word defines chrono trigger besides perfection.
The interconnectedness of the Pendant, Dreamstone, Masamune, Janus, the indestructible doors and treasure chests all coming together is superb and completely blew my 10-year-old mind when I first encountered it.
Its absolutely great to see someone who's never played this game go through it and relive the magic I felt when I played it way back when it came out. Glad you enjoyed the game Sarah, it is and will always be one of my absolute favorite games.

In the original Japanese version, there is a running joke where the side villains are named after food. Chrono Cross has Solt and Peppor. Ozzie, Flea, and Slash were originally named variations on Vinegar, Mayonnaise, and Soy Sauce. The U.S. translator kept one of the in-jokes though. ...that's what that whole "Ozzie's in a Pickle!" - joke is about. His japanese name is General Venegir

@@Classic_DionysuS It's different, definitely not as light-hearted as CT. CC is VERY heavy, you get a sense it's the story writer's reflection on life itself. If you can appreciate it, it leaves a mark in you.

Chrono trigger ending can best be described as a feel good punch to the gut, it's so satisfying to see the people from all times baking you up, so sad saying goodbye to all your friend so uplifting and hopeful seeing the world you help save with that wonderful musical theme! Everything is JUST SO GOOD it makes you want to cry! ;w;
Best RPG! I remember being a little kid watching my dad play this game while I sat in his lap. Today I still play through it from time to time. Chrono Trigger was the gateway to FF, Dragon Quest and even KH. I plan on playing through it with my little kids just like my dad did with me and my siblings. Funny how much one video game can impact your entire childhood.
@@HypocritesExposdWell, if you ever decide to play Chrono Trigger, I may be able to go over the different ports: SNES (Super Nintendo) : The classic and "honorable" way to play Chrono Trigger. Since it's the SNES version, it will muffle audio when an attack or other action in battle is performed. PS1: Adds anime cutscenes but also has slower load times. DS: Often considered the "definitive version." It contains a new, more descriptive text translation, compressed audio that doesn't muffle when attacking, the Arena of Ages (though it's pretty forgettable) a new area called the Lost Sanctum (contains a bunch of side quests) but I don't think they're worth your time in comparison to the "main story" side quests, and the post game areas of the Dimensional Vortexes. Completing the Dimensional Vortexes can grant you access to a way to unlock the 13th ending, which is supposed to tie into the story of Chrono Cross. iOS/Mobile: Basically like the DS port, but with a different sprite font, controller support, features an auto-battle command and most likely uses the original SNES audio. PC/Steam: Basically like the mobile port but it uses the original sprite detail and keeps the content from the DS version. It's also the fastest of all the other ports, auto-bookmarks/saves after entering a loading zone, and allows you to move diagonally on the *overworld.* Just like the mobile port, the audio will not be compressed like the DS version or muffled when an attack is playing out. Make sure you visit the Mayor's House/Manor at the beginning of the game. The NPCs should tell you about the game's mechanics. Oh. And something to be mindful of is that if you're playing Chrono Trigger on an SNES emulator, there will be a point in the game where it will require you to press and hold both L and R then to press A to activate a certain button to progress through the game. So you'll need to attach said L and R button combination to one single key.

Sarah, you’re the best!! Chronotrigger wasn’t released in Australia back in 1995, so I had it imported from Japan with an adapter for my SNES. I never played a game that was so dramatic. Watching your videos allowed me to relive all of it and not be afraid to have a cry with you. The characters are quite special. Thank you Sarah.
I remember Aussie NMS (Nintendo Magazine System) previewing it and raving about how good it was ... and then it never came out! 🤬 I eventually played a Japanese copy while in Japan in the early 2000s. It was a hard slog figuring out the story with all the kanji (the bit where you have to run around Spekkio's room three times to get magic totally stumped me), but I got as far as Zeal. Later I played it with an adapter. Then tried to get through an English version on emulator, with faulty graphics. Finally finished it on DS. By then I'd seen the early part of the game so many times over that I was a bit fed up with it. If only they'd just released the bloody thing back in the 90s. 😓 Thanks Sarah for the playthrough!

Seriously when I coincidentally came across this video I was shocked that younger generations enjoy this game at all. Its a testament how great this game is. It was incredibly ahead of its time, and had some of the greatest score as well. A game that I feel comes close in past 10 years or so in music department was Xenoblade for me.
That game has some good ideas to be sure, but it is a shadow of its predecessor. When your JRPG has both more characters and a lesser quality than the rando's that join you in a Fire Emblem game, something has gone terribly wrong. So many of the characters are so bad that I would not keep them around as NPC's. I think the game could have been much better if it only had the 4 actual good characters (Serge, Kid, Glenn, Norris) and the two characters closest to being good characters (Guile, Orlha), and put more time into them it could have been great. In addition the story for the game was so convoluted that it should have had more clear connections to Chrono Trigger early on (shared enemies for example) or just been a spiritual successor and a completely different world.
There are no mispronounciations, really. They're fictional characters whose names are only in print, so however you choose to say it, is the correct way. Otherwise, the "Marl" vs "Marley" debates would be neverending.
That was beautiful. It gives me a little hope when new generations can appreciate a masterwork like Chrono Trigger, and there's something to be said for seeing all this again through someone else's eyes. This was maybe the first game to really have a profound effect on me (Yuji Horii seems to have a knack for this) and that feeling has only grown stronger over time.
You had a big lore moment there in taking Magus to fight Queen Zeal, his mother, you'd have gotten the standard "Big Boss" music otherwise. Taking Magus there grants him that little interjection as he prepares to commit matricide....and his mother still cannot recognize her son....then Magus' theme plays. If you had picked Yes, he still tells you how to get Crono back, but it's more bitter sweet because he is just a victim of Lavos just like you, he just loved his sister so much he was willing to goto ANY length to save her, and you kill him. If you are up for the bonus content, there is a "true" final boss that deals with certain loose ends...somewhat and tries to link the game to the sequel, tries. I'd consider it the final ending to the game.
For Lucca and the baby to make sense you have to play Crono Cross from the PS1 days. Its story setup. Anyway I just caught THE virus so thanks for the distraction. I needed that. :D
You know Chrono Cross is not a real sequel to Chrono Trigger and that the anime cutscenes were made for the PS1 version of CT after CC was released as an afterthought to try to tie both games.

Our main objective for Chrono Cross was to share a little bit of the Chrono Trigger worldview, while creating a completely different game as a means of providing new entertainment to the player (...). Masato Kato once said this: We didn't want to directly extend Chrono Trigger into a sequel, but create a new Chrono with links to the original.[24] Yes, the platform changed; and yes, there were many parts that changed dramatically from the previous work. I never had any intentions of just taking the system from Trigger and moving it onto the PlayStation console. That's why I believe that Cross is Cross, and NOT Trigger 2. And I can quote many other directors, designers or producers that work on either Chrono Trigger or Chrono Cross.
Given her reaction to Lucca at the beginning, I certainly wasn't expecting her to barely use that character in this playthrough. Or was the editing to blame?
In a soundtrack full of absolute bangers, I think the credits music is my favorite. I love love love when games have a unique credits theme, not simply a medley of themes from the rest of the soundtrack. Chrono Trigger is the best of both worlds!
Because of the cutscene I'm sure it's canon that Glenn becomes human again even if you have Magus join you, I don't doubt Magus would've reverted the curse for him if he could.

She usually is underleveled by 10 levels or so each time she goes against a boss like that Like in Temple of the ancients in ff7, the recommended lvl there is like 46, she was 36 at best xD
What a masterpiece. The art, music, story, and game design are all just incredible. Playing this back in the late 90s absolutely blew my mind, and shifted my whole perspective on the potential of video games, from "just games" to true art. It's amazing how beautiful it still is today, 25 years later -- a truly timeless experience.
Wonder if Sarah would be into Dragon Quest 11. I played it because it’s on Gamepass and now it’s one of my top 10 favorite games ever. Music is on point, story is also on point. Was crying for like the last week playing it.

well, my reactions were mostly the same when I first played it... except for the first encounter with Lavos where my jaw dropped and I had to save, leave the game for the day and go outside because I couldn't believe what just happened :))

Even though the spinoff/sequel is my favorite game. There has been no game that surpassed this game in what it sought to achieve and DID achieve. No RPG since has ever had the story, the game play, or the art that equaled or surpassed this one.... (Though Suikoden did come close with 1 and 2) and for that I am sad, but we will always have Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Trigger was the very first game of this kind that I have ever played, and that same summer, a friend was playing FF6, which I wound up comparing to Chrono Trigger on more than one occcasion! XD There are indeed many magical moments to be found in Chrono Trigger, as well as epic feels to be had to accompany them.

Chrono trigger is considered to be the best JRPG by most critics and fans. I kind of agree, and I've played many.

Even the title is so fitting, it’s perfect in every way. Well not every, it should be about an hour long, then it’s perfect.
When I thought Chrono may be revived, I put Marle in my party and it did not disappoint. Got me right in the feels. 🥺
Chrono Trigger is a masterpiece and the type of game that rarely gets made. Squaresoft joined Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball), Hironobu Sakaguchi (father of Final Fantasy), Yuji Horii (father of Dragon Quest), Nobuo Uematsu (You know him ;)) and Yoshinori Kitase (Director of a buncha FF, like VI, VII and VIII ). IT`S THE ABSOLUTE DREAM TEAM!
I would add Yasunori Mitsuda, big part of that amazing ost its his contribution being the youngest of them and chrono trigger being the first big proyect he worked, he did am amazing job
I think the baby at the end was a Chrono Cross (the sequel) reference. Lucca dedicates her life to raising orphans.

When first getting to Zeal. That's when a good game became a legendary game.
It just blindsides everyone how the game gains so much more depth at such a clear cut spot.
by far, the best game story. from setting, to how nothing is overplayed, to even how it flows. no other word defines chrono trigger besides perfection.
The interconnectedness of the Pendant, Dreamstone, Masamune, Janus, the indestructible doors and treasure chests all coming together is superb and completely blew my 10-year-old mind when I first encountered it.

Now, onto New Game+ and face Lavos at different points of the game to unlock other 12 different endings. And after you are done with CT, be sure to play Another Eden for mobile, a spiritual successor written by Masato Kato as well.

In the original Japanese version, there is a running joke where the side villains are named after food. Chrono Cross has Solt and Peppor. Ozzie, Flea, and Slash were originally named variations on Vinegar, Mayonnaise, and Soy Sauce.
The U.S. translator kept one of the in-jokes though. ...that's what that whole "Ozzie's in a Pickle!" - joke is about. His japanese name is General Venegir

@@Classic_DionysuS It's different, definitely not as light-hearted as CT. CC is VERY heavy, you get a sense it's the story writer's reflection on life itself. If you can appreciate it, it leaves a mark in you.

Chrono trigger ending can best be described as a feel good punch to the gut, it's so satisfying to see the people from all times baking you up, so sad saying goodbye to all your friend so uplifting and hopeful seeing the world you help save with that wonderful musical theme!

Best RPG! I remember being a little kid watching my dad play this game while I sat in his lap. Today I still play through it from time to time. Chrono Trigger was the gateway to FF, Dragon Quest and even KH. I plan on playing through it with my little kids just like my dad did with me and my siblings. Funny how much one video game can impact your entire childhood.
How old were might I ask? I want to introduce the game to my child, but not sure when is a good time.

SNES (Super Nintendo) : The classic and "honorable" way to play Chrono Trigger. Since it's the SNES version, it will muffle audio when an attack or other action in battle is performed.
PS1: Adds anime cutscenes but also has slower load times.
DS: Often considered the "definitive version." It contains a new, more descriptive text translation, compressed audio that doesn't muffle when attacking, the Arena of Ages (though it's pretty forgettable) a new area called the Lost Sanctum (contains a bunch of side quests) but I don't think they're worth your time in comparison to the "main story" side quests, and the post game areas of the Dimensional Vortexes. Completing the Dimensional Vortexes can grant you access to a way to unlock the 13th ending, which is supposed to tie into the story of Chrono Cross.
iOS/Mobile: Basically like the DS port, but with a different sprite font, controller support, features an auto-battle command and most likely uses the original SNES audio.
PC/Steam: Basically like the mobile port but it uses the original sprite detail and keeps the content from the DS version. It's also the fastest of all the other ports, auto-bookmarks/saves after entering a loading zone, and allows you to move diagonally on the *overworld.* Just like the mobile port, the audio will not be compressed like the DS version or muffled when an attack is playing out.
Make sure you visit the Mayor's House/Manor at the beginning of the game. The NPCs should tell you about the game's mechanics.
Oh. And something to be mindful of is that if you're playing Chrono Trigger on an SNES emulator, there will be a point in the game where it will require you to press and hold both L and R then to press A to activate a certain button to progress through the game. So you'll need to attach said L and R button combination to one single key.
I cried together with you, this game is so beautiful, along with FF6 as one of the best RPG of all time.

Chronotrigger wasn’t released in Australia back in 1995, so I had it imported from Japan with an adapter for my SNES. I never played a game that was so dramatic. Watching your videos allowed me to relive all of it and not be afraid to have a cry with you. The characters are quite special. Thank you Sarah.
I remember Aussie NMS (Nintendo Magazine System) previewing it and raving about how good it was ... and then it never came out! 🤬
I eventually played a Japanese copy while in Japan in the early 2000s. It was a hard slog figuring out the story with all the kanji (the bit where you have to run around Spekkio's room three times to get magic totally stumped me), but I got as far as Zeal. Later I played it with an adapter. Then tried to get through an English version on emulator, with faulty graphics. Finally finished it on DS. By then I'd seen the early part of the game so many times over that I was a bit fed up with it. If only they'd just released the bloody thing back in the 90s. 😓

Seriously when I coincidentally came across this video I was shocked that younger generations enjoy this game at all. Its a testament how great this game is. It was incredibly ahead of its time, and had some of the greatest score as well.
A game that I feel comes close in past 10 years or so in music department was Xenoblade for me.

I do hope you play Chrono Cross at some point, that was my first JRPG that I played to completion and thus it have a very special place in my heart
That game has some good ideas to be sure, but it is a shadow of its predecessor. When your JRPG has both more characters and a lesser quality than the rando's that join you in a Fire Emblem game, something has gone terribly wrong. So many of the characters are so bad that I would not keep them around as NPC's.
I think the game could have been much better if it only had the 4 actual good characters (Serge, Kid, Glenn, Norris) and the two characters closest to being good characters (Guile, Orlha), and put more time into them it could have been great.
In addition the story for the game was so convoluted that it should have had more clear connections to Chrono Trigger early on (shared enemies for example) or just been a spiritual successor and a completely different world.
I wish I could play Chrono Trigger for the first time again.

There are no mispronounciations, really. They're fictional characters whose names are only in print, so however you choose to say it, is the correct way. Otherwise, the "Marl" vs "Marley" debates would be neverending.

That was beautiful. It gives me a little hope when new generations can appreciate a masterwork like Chrono Trigger, and there's something to be said for seeing all this again through someone else's eyes. This was maybe the first game to really have a profound effect on me (Yuji Horii seems to have a knack for this) and that feeling has only grown stronger over time.
Absolutely incredible watching someone discover this masterpiece. Almost like playing it for the first time again. :)
You had a big lore moment there in taking Magus to fight Queen Zeal, his mother, you'd have gotten the standard "Big Boss" music otherwise. Taking Magus there grants him that little interjection as he prepares to commit matricide....and his mother still cannot recognize her son....then Magus' theme plays.
If you had picked Yes, he still tells you how to get Crono back, but it's more bitter sweet because he is just a victim of Lavos just like you, he just loved his sister so much he was willing to goto ANY length to save her, and you kill him.
If you are up for the bonus content, there is a "true" final boss that deals with certain loose ends...somewhat and tries to link the game to the sequel, tries. I'd consider it the final ending to the game.
You somehow went from struggling with easy bosses to beating the entire Black Omen and Lavos' first form before even reviving Crono. That's incredible
For Lucca and the baby to make sense you have to play Crono Cross from the PS1 days. Its story setup. Anyway I just caught THE virus so thanks for the distraction. I needed that. :D

You know Chrono Cross is not a real sequel to Chrono Trigger and that the anime cutscenes were made for the PS1 version of CT after CC was released as an afterthought to try to tie both games.

In a soundtrack full of absolute bangers, I think the credits music is my favorite. I love love love when games have a unique credits theme, not simply a medley of themes from the rest of the soundtrack. Chrono Trigger is the best of both worlds!

Because of the cutscene I'm sure it's canon that Glenn becomes human again even if you have Magus join you, I don't doubt Magus would've reverted the curse for him if he could.

Corridors of time, this OST changed my live, when I first arrived at the magic kingdom of zeal I could feel the magic with this song!
In my case, I prefer Schala's Theme over Corridors of Time but the two are my favourites songs of all the OST.

What a masterpiece. The art, music, story, and game design are all just incredible. Playing this back in the late 90s absolutely blew my mind, and shifted my whole perspective on the potential of video games, from "just games" to true art. It's amazing how beautiful it still is today, 25 years later -- a truly timeless experience.
Wonder if Sarah would be into Dragon Quest 11. I played it because it’s on Gamepass and now it’s one of my top 10 favorite games ever. Music is on point, story is also on point. Was crying for like the last week playing it.

well, my reactions were mostly the same when I first played it... except for the first encounter with Lavos where my jaw dropped and I had to save, leave the game for the day and go outside because I couldn't believe what just happened :))

Even though the spinoff/sequel is my favorite game. There has been no game that surpassed this game in what it sought to achieve and DID achieve. No RPG since has ever had the story, the game play, or the art that equaled or surpassed this one.... (Though Suikoden did come close with 1 and 2) and for that I am sad, but we will always have Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana were my two favorites when it came to music and storylines.

This game was so masterfully written. It's hard to believe it takes a huge steamy dump on like 99% of games that came after it to this day.
