HD800s and the ModMic wireless. I have to say I do prefer the fuller sound of the new versions. If the wireless version gets an update, I'll be sure to upgrade.
I've been using the V-Moda Boom Pro mic for years, and I couldn't be happier. It's ergonomic, low-profile, and miles better than the build-in microphone in any of those "gaming" branded headsets. People have told me it sounds like I'm using a desktop "streamer" microphone.
I'm on my 4th Modmic in 4 years ... the cables always break right after the metal piece. The audio quality is good but the cables are really bad. Lots of customer reviews confirm that. They have always been replaced but I'm tired of returning them every year ... hope they fixed this, but the "s" piece looks exactly the same in this new version ...
In every generation we do our best to make improvements to durability. Hopefully this latest change to our materials, strain reliefs, and internal anchors will expand the life. But your feedback is appreciated and we're always working to make things better!
Same, years ago before I gave up on all this DAC/AMP + ModMic, wired headphones stuff and switched to a simple wireless headset I went through a modmic every 6 months. Absolutely trash wire quality. And the wireless one is like 150$ lol
The kimura solo sounded.... better? Maybe just getting tricked by more bass. But it sounded better than uni 2 and usb 2 imo. Seemed to have less compression and was clearer and more natural sounding. A lot of the differences can probably be changed with EQ but i think in that setup with the settings used it was nicer.
Correction on the side-tone debacle (mic feedback to hear yourself). This can easily be done with a proper DAC/External Sound Card device that has mic monitoring built in, to which is why you'd want the UNI 2 over the USB 2.
Exactly: I've been doing this since forever with my Motu Microbook IIc, it's got internal monitoring circuits in hardware like most music production USB sound cards.
The quality of the microphone is great though. And definitely sound better than even higher costing headphone mics. Better than a Bose quietcomfort Ultra that I tried out for a week and half and then 2020 Razer Opus. I got mine on ebay for 80 bucks.
I just bought a Modmic Wireless used for 35€ and put it inside my Steelseries Arctis Pro Wireless. Now I have a truly wireless headset with really good mic quality.
As an owner of the previously gen. Modmic with Minijack, I would heartily recommend getting the USB mic. The minijack version is very low and can't be boosted more than it is. People on Discord have me at 200% and I've raised settings as much as I can.
I've used the modmic wireless for three years now for work. I bought it during the deepest days of the pandemic and while I love the convenience, there are several usability problems that I hope Antlion will address. More specifically, turning the mic off requires a two second press of the power button. If you press it for too long, it won't turn off and you have to try again. A dedicated on-off switch would make things more convenient. Then there's the already mentioned micro-USB. USB-C would mean I don't have to worry about misaligning my charging cable or they could do away with USB-C on the mic itself and switch to wireless magnetic charging. The lack of a power state also meant that I had multiple meetings where the mic would shut down because of low battery. Having a dedicated light meter representing battery charge level in increments of 25% would be very helpful.
Listened to a lot of microphone samples on UA-cam. V-Moda Boom Pro and ModMic 2 are the clear winners for add-on mics! Pick the one that best fits the headphones you use. In my case, for the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro where the headphone cable is not detachable, the ModMic 2 Uni is the obvious choice since I don't want to deal with batteries and recharging. Beyerdynamic because of their long term track record for replacement parts.
@3:17 You state that there is no sidetone functionality with the modmics.... But with the Uni2 it is technically possible if you use an external DAC that has a sidetone functionality (like your SoundblasterX G6).
I am still rocking my Game One headphones and love them (though they have a lot of physical wear that will cause me to lose them soon enough). These have lasted me 10 years and been amazing with my only replacing the ear and band pads and the cable (all once). I like this design as I do not have to fumble with finding a button of something on the wire to mute the mic, flip it up and my mid is off, drop it when I needed. The EPOS/Sennheiser sound quality is excellent the mic very solid. More than enough for gaming use, I have used them for doing podcast interviews and when I have streamed in the past to good effect.
Just bought a SBX G6 in combination with the H6Pro Oben back for 175. Never had open back, never had a DAC/AMP. Excited to try it out, sounds great in the video!
OK so the Corsair pro sounded terrible to the point where if memory servers me the wireless RGB version sounds way better than the pro. Also the new mod mic sounds amazing and I hope they release a new wireless mod mic that is a bit speaker and sounds just as good. Otherwise the MMX200 sounds pretty good and the Maxwell also seems to be a good option but both are pretty pricey.
Would’ve loved to see a comparison to your previously-recommended gaming headset combo of the Philips SHP9500s and V-Moda Boom Pro. That’s what I’m currently using and would be interested to know how much better the ModMics are in terms of mic quality
With any 3.5mm wired headset or mod mic you can buy a Rode VLXR adapter for about £30 That steps down 48V Phantom power to 3-5V to power it so you can plug it into your Audio interface and enjoy Direct monitoring, Onboard DSP or Hardware EQ/Comp you may have and not have to put up with Windows Jank mic implementation, It's a game changer! Especially for me that hates having my heavy XLR mic and boom arm on the desk when gaming or streaming but also wants the XLR mic/audio interface/rackmount hardware Bliss but on a Headset.
i get it and i do think its nice to have options, but for me i just cant anymore after using wireless... no cables are a God send! and i can still talk to people while i poop o.O
Same! Years ago I had a DT770 with various DAC/AMPs and modmics and they always broke after 6 months. Thanks to warranty I got a new one like 4 times LOL. But now I've been using an Astro A50 for 4 years and ordered an Audeze Maxwell, coming next week, I'm hyped.
@TerrorMango it sounds beautiful, but 500g sitting on your head all the time gets old. You, might not be a sensitive to it but after an hour I personally develop a pressure point in the middle of my skull. Hands down the best sounding headset iv tried, I sent mine back for reasons above.
I have the 3.5mm modmic on my DT990 for years and used a cable coil tidy on it and it's tidy and perfect sound. I also think for wireless comparison the Audeze Maxwell does very well with mic sound
After my ModMic USB broke I went with a condenser mic and boom arm (Elgato Wave 3 with the Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP) but I think out of all of the microphones you just tested, the ModMic Wireless has the best clarity. The new ModMics sound fuller like you say but also a bit muddy. I favour clarity over fullness.
Did you test the Modmic Uni 2 with Schiit Hel/Fulla? I remember there being some not so great results with the previous versions of Modmic and I was wondering if it's better on this new Uni 2.
Hardware Canucks say hd58x jubilee ultimate headphone. I guess me using my headphones that cost substantially more, and perform substantially better, is crazy! Jokes aside, great video! I have been preaching modmics for years! maybe not the best mic going, but you get to use much better headphones then gaming headsets.
The Astro A50x is the best wireless headset I have used by a mile (and I have used ALOT). Its expensive but worth it. You should include it as a comparison in these types of videos!
I use v-moda cross fades, with their boom pro microphone. I have had issues with a popping noise whenever a sharp around comes on. Literally built a new pc to get rid of it but it still stayed. Must either be the headphones or sound card at this point. But best sound quality for a microphone and headset you can get. Microphone is just too sensitive though
For me it's either a wireless headset with good mic (preferably the Beyer dynamic because I don't want razer software on my PC) or high quality headphones and a mid tier condenser mic which you can get for the same price as the mid mic ... It feels like the mod mic is trying to be a solution but I don't see the problem it wants to fix. It's not cheaper, it's cable clips still don't look "appealing" (and btw how do you detatch it with the clips? Do you have to undo them every time?) .. I feel like there is only a very small niche that could have a use for it like VR headsets etc. I hoped there will be a wireless version V2 when I clicked the video
Would be awesome if ModMic Uni 2 could come with an XLR version so I can use it with my equipment for improving my voice quality. That would be freaking awesome to have. Of course, I do have an 3.5mm to XLR adapter, so it's not really a big deal at all. I currently have an Audio Technical ATH-M50xSTS (Audio Technica, can you please come up with a shorter name?). I had to buy a Behringer equalizer in order to bring in the low end due to the 150Hz high-pass filter which makes my voice sound thin. The high-pass filter is there for those who have poor microphone technique. That ModMic Uni 2 sounds fantastic. USB is simply not for me when it comes to limitations in the hardware side.
I really hope someone will create a "mini XLR cable version" in the future! It attaching to the mini XLR jack of higher end studio headphones and replacing the regular cable would be amazing for headphones such as the DT 900X or 700X.
My biggest problem with mics are other users' mics and audio settings. Mic attachments can only do so much. I care more about not hearing things like echo from mics of other players. Most mics on headsets are fine. The bad ones def need to be better out of the box, and that's where these modmics would shine the brightest.
I actually use my xm5 with a boom mic, so i dont have another cable. Im also able to turn the headphones on an us the noise cancellation. I dont really get the doble cable config.
Funny enough i have the same Senny headphones with a modmic uni......they don't include enough of the clips with the mic's in stock to be able to clip the cable neatly, had to buy pack in order to make it neat. I'll keep a eye on the uni 2 and hopefully the wireless 2 they have planned but right now not enough reason to upgrade (unless it stops working)
Hifiman actually have a Bluetooth adaptor style headphone called the Diva but battery life isn't great. Wifi based protocols typically use a lot more power than Bluetooth does, and most headphones worth purchasing an expensive module for need cables routed for each cup. The diva also was a very low impedance headphone, powering something like a 6xx series headphone or a Sundara etc would drain the battery even faster in order to get good listening volumes. It's a cool idea but I think it would just be a nuisance, wireless is about convenience, so it doesn't make a lot of sense to make an inconvenient wireless solution. I think wireless solutions really need to be purpose built to make sense.
@Hardware Canucks Any chance you might do a review of the best open back headphones available around to use with the modmic? So far I use the Beyerdynamics DT990 Editions but I am thinking about getting something else.
I'm still using the sennheiser game zero, it's probably 10 years old but it doesn't break so no reason to change. My next choice will probably be good quality wired sennheiser with a wireless modmic or equivalent
I don't even use a mic but I'm using the astro a50x headphones for daily audio so if I ever do need to use it it's the best on the market stay safe and happy gaming to all
Big thanks to Dmitry for taking the time to check out our latest ModMics! If anyone has any questions (Wireless in 2025, before you ask) just reply here! :)
I want to buy a good headset with good sound... Good for warzone and also single player games and also a great microphone. Which one should I choose? 😭
Best mic ive ever used is still the one that came with my astro A10 gen 1 Its run at 32/196khz and the headset itself is run at 24/96 with dolby atmos for headphones through a sound-blaster G6 I get the best of all worlds, best mic ive ever used, biggest thumping base ive ever had and durability that is unbelievable -32dB on anything 129hz and above, run in high gain with 70% volume and my phone reads it as 124dB up from 104dB of my Hyperx cloud II USB DAC I do want to get a pair of crusher 2's but im not 100% sure they will even survive the G6 cus my astro's will wobble of my head if its at the wrong angle
The ultimate headset for me would be great audio, PC wireless (2,4ghz), no RGB and no mic. I already got a XLR mic so i just want great headphones with great battery. I got Logitech PRO X Wireless but It doesnt hold a candle to Audio-Technica M50XB. And bluetooth sucks with latency.
I just hope that if they make a Wireless 2, that they just put an on/off switch on it. Its annoying having to try several times to hold for 3 seconds exactly to turn it off when a basic switch would be faster and easier and has worked for over a century to turn things on and off. No need to recreate the wheel.
No joke, a HC/LTT (manufacturing assistance) gaming headset would probably sell like hotcakes... saying this like i have any clue what goes into audio manufacturing 😅
Hey Dimitri, I would have loved to see a test where you put the Open headphones with the ModMic and play something loudly like Helldivers 2 so that we can see if the ModMic captures the noise. That is one of my fears with this microphone and why I have not gotten one. I play my games usually at max volume for that chaotic boom experience and I am afraid a ModMic will capture the noise and send it to my teammate's vs a Closed Headset that usually prevents this from happening. Do you think you can add this in feature reviews by any chance? Thank you !
@@Otuhh A 1 meter extension cable shouldn't impact any quality or latency, however try to keep the weight of the extra cable off the mic to help maximize the life of both mic and adhesive. Like, use a cable anchor or something if you can.
Sorry to say but that price tag is ridiculous for how awkward these are with cabling etc... You can get a decent full size usb/xlr microphone including a stand or even desk mounted arm at around the same price point.
It's just at the price where it's a toss up. You can get a decent arm + xlr mic + audio interface for around $100, and this is a bit cheaper than that. It's a lot more convenient, less hassle, and a fraction of the size. Yes the proper setup is better in almost every way, but for a gamer who just wants a decent mic for voice chats and ingame comms it isn't the easiest sell. This is coming from someone with my mic on an arm that I pull out from under my monitor, with an audio interface plugged into two PCs.
Sorry, Dimitri. This ain't it, for me. Nothing beats a good wireless headset with a great mic. I'm gonna get the turtle beach 700 gen2, beautiful and amazing quality!
I ended up with Sennheiser HD600 headphones, modmic and an XLR adapter feeding into a Presonus audio interface. Means I can do zero latency processing and feed my voice back into the headphones for monitoring. Absolutely awesome setup
I have had the first gen modmic for about 8 years, bought it for 50 bucks, already though it was expensive at the time, but it only has gotten more expensive without any crazy improvements, it's ridiculous, if I ever need a new mic I can just get a dynamic cardioid mic and a desk mount, will never feed again a money hungry company with trash value
so you can buy a wired aftermarket modkit that will look really bad on your headset for 90bucks or you can buy a Razer Blackshark hyperspeed for 110 and get a much better mic already built into a top tier fully wireless headset yeah no this ain't it, thanks for including the Blackshark into the video and showing just how much better it sounds tho lol
2024 and they can’t come with a better idea than a sticker to attach the thing? Jeez.Just make a clip for the headband or something that won’t go off at the first careless move.Come on man
Its expensive. Amazon has a blue tooth microphone for like $26. Im over gaming headsets. They are a con. Just buy a good set of audiophile headphones and a separate mic.
Discord will get rid of most those background noise problems. The only time you pick up background stuff is when that one guy has his in-game voice chat open all the time lol. Or obs/recording, but if you plan have mic audio, you shouldn't be using these mics anyways (get a real mic at that point). There are also tons on programs to mess with mic settings.
I've got to be honest; the ModMic/s sound kinda muddy, rather than "full". It would be nice if the sound had some more high end clarity. A bit more air.
HD800s and the ModMic wireless. I have to say I do prefer the fuller sound of the new versions. If the wireless version gets an update, I'll be sure to upgrade.
I use hd800s and razer mic but I want to try the modmic wireless

Same thing happened twice with mine, so I just moved to the wireless one.
Same problem for me
Same, years ago before I gave up on all this DAC/AMP + ModMic, wired headphones stuff and switched to a simple wireless headset I went through a modmic every 6 months.
At this point I would rather buy a condenser mic with a boom arm as I will be stuck to the desk anyway 🤷🏾♂️
Good point, most of those come with useful monitoring too, whether from a USB mic or an XLR interface. And one less cable to handle.
yes that I what I did bought a good microphone. if it is for a desktop computer anyway just get a good mic.
Oops, I'm 2 months late and just posted the same thing before I found your post. But yes, exactly this, UNI2 and external DAC with sidetone works.
I really wish there a competitor for modmic because at that price point you can literally buy a new budget headset.
The quality of the microphone is great though. And definitely sound better than even higher costing headphone mics. Better than a Bose quietcomfort Ultra that I tried out for a week and half and then 2020 Razer Opus. I got mine on ebay for 80 bucks.
Meze recently came out with their add-on mic. It has 2x 3.5mm terminations though so wouldn't fit Sennheiser headphones without adapters.
just get a lav mic and clip it to the headphone cable right up against the earcup.
@@TOM7952 Which one?
I bought the V-Moda boom pro for my son's Audio Technica headphones.
I just bought a Modmic Wireless used for 35€ and put it inside my Steelseries Arctis Pro Wireless. Now I have a truly wireless headset with really good mic quality.
I used a modmic a couple years ago. While the audio quality wasnt bad, the additional cable was such a pain. Just buy a budget desk mic for like $40.
As an owner of the previously gen. Modmic with Minijack, I would heartily recommend getting the USB mic. The minijack version is very low and can't be boosted more than it is. People on Discord have me at 200% and I've raised settings as much as I can.

Best mic ive ever used is still the one that came with my astro A10 gen 1
Its run at 32/196khz and the headset itself is run at 24/96 with dolby atmos for headphones through a sound-blaster G6
I get the best of all worlds, best mic ive ever used, biggest thumping base ive ever had and durability that is unbelievable
-32dB on anything 129hz and above, run in high gain with 70% volume and my phone reads it as 124dB up from 104dB of my Hyperx cloud II USB DAC
I do want to get a pair of crusher 2's but im not 100% sure they will even survive the G6 cus my astro's will wobble of my head if its at the wrong angle
The other way you can have 0 latency monitoring is to use an audio interface.
And bluetooth sucks with latency.
personally, I used the modmic for 2 years until it died without warning, right outside the warranty. I'm now using a SDC + audio interface.
this MOST incredible hisssing noise is from the Modmic ??
Why does the mic in this video sound so bad?
Maybe because it is actually bad ? 🙄
I just hope that if they make a Wireless 2, that they just put an on/off switch on it. Its annoying having to try several times to hold for 3 seconds exactly to turn it off when a basic switch would be faster and easier and has worked for over a century to turn things on and off. No need to recreate the wheel.
We promise an on/off switch and USB-C. Sadly you'll have to wait until 2025, but we promise it is coming! :)
@@AntlionAudio Awesome! Can I assume improved battery life as well?
@@Tj_1988 That is the plan, stay tuned for more info :)
UNI 2 sound is a close second to the Razer for me (man that Razer sounds good tho).
No joke, a HC/LTT (manufacturing assistance) gaming headset would probably sell like hotcakes... saying this like i have any clue what goes into audio manufacturing 😅
Started to find the ultimate gaming headset when i was born. Still searching while im going into retirement now. GG Hardware Canucks!
its neuralink, stick around to see it!
Thank you !
Really other brands should just partnership with them as many headset mics suck. Same for wireless options.
I have the wireless and I would love to get an upgrade to it - and please make a white one!!!
One of best headsets maybe HC.
Ive been waiting on the wireless 2 for 2 years. They said sometime in 2024 but im starting to doubt it.
Sadly, moved to 2025 :( More info next year!
@@AntlionAudio welp i bought the usb 2. Hey quick question. Will usb extension cable mess with the mic quality? Say like an extra 1m extension.
@@Otuhh A 1 meter extension cable shouldn't impact any quality or latency, however try to keep the weight of the extra cable off the mic to help maximize the life of both mic and adhesive. Like, use a cable anchor or something if you can.
@@AntlionAudio i use like 8 of those clips so its got no weight on it
What's the game he's playing at 04.04? :)
Looks like Assassins Creed Valhalla
@@Steven12661 Thanks!
I miss a few more cables around. That’s the only thing.
Still waiting for good wireless open back headset to drop
ModMic wireless 2 releases next year
i hate wires i still love the g733
wait. that's not hd490 pro
I have had the first gen modmic for about 8 years, bought it for 50 bucks, already though it was expensive at the time, but it only has gotten more expensive without any crazy improvements, it's ridiculous, if I ever need a new mic I can just get a dynamic cardioid mic and a desk mount, will never feed again a money hungry company with trash value
so you can buy a wired aftermarket modkit that will look really bad on your headset for 90bucks or you can buy a Razer Blackshark hyperspeed for 110 and get a much better mic already built into a top tier fully wireless headset
yeah no this ain't it, thanks for including the Blackshark into the video and showing just how much better it sounds tho lol
2024 and they can’t come with a better idea than a sticker to attach the thing? Jeez.Just make a clip for the headband or something that won’t go off at the first careless move.Come on man
I'm good with my Astro a50x
Hahaha, it's thanks to videos like this that I've done the same with the modmic wireless on my 2020 Razer Opus
Using HD800S and an elgato wave dx xlr
Its expensive. Amazon has a blue tooth microphone for like $26. Im over gaming headsets. They are a con. Just buy a good set of audiophile headphones and a separate mic.
I just use my crushers with a mic plugged into them lol
With a thumbnail like that, I don't want to meet the person that doesn't click on it.
Which one did you see?
-D.
Lol hate this new feature where you can put multiple thumbnails & then see which makes people click on the video 😂@@HardwareCanucks
@@HardwareCanucks Quit changing the thumbnail and you'll always know which one people see.
-S.
still got my trusty sony mic for $9
I love how Antlion are sending these to every youtuber they can, ModMICS are flimsy, over priced utter crap.
If the Headphone has cables, it will NEVER be the best Headset for me
Good lord that Corsair sounds like trash. Happy with my Kimura Duo. My Epos H6 Pros start to hurt my head after a long session.
3 thousands of wires?
to pricy to the point costing another new wireless headset with mic included. i wonder who is the target audience ??
Discord will get rid of most those background noise problems. The only time you pick up background stuff is when that one guy has his in-game voice chat open all the time lol. Or obs/recording, but if you plan have mic audio, you shouldn't be using these mics anyways (get a real mic at that point). There are also tons on programs to mess with mic settings.
I'll use my modmic1+hd650 until i die probably.
I've got to be honest; the ModMic/s sound kinda muddy, rather than "full". It would be nice if the sound had some more high end clarity. A bit more air.
