**NOTE** - At 01:49 - what I mean by that is if you intend to use your headset mic. If you have another solution for your mic, then you can use any standard dac/amp.
Also, notably missing from this list today is the SMSL DL200. I'm going to do a future vid that addresses all the option *below* the $150 mark for people that are more budget limited. (and it won't take 4 years this time lol) Reply to this if you have any specific requests or recommendations.

Speaking of mic solutions, I'd love to hear your thoughts on audio interfaces as well. Personally, I like the cleanliness of being able to drive my mic and headphones at the same time from a single device.

@@Extra_ChrisBIts tough to find a single interface that has enough headphone output power to drive audiophile headphones. I prefer it as well, bc I like to hear my mic back in my cans with no latency. Most of them I've tried so far perform the same, but I may have a solution in the near future

If you buy a Magni with an internal DAC, you can bypass it later if you want to build a stack. It has an RCA mode only. You can add a MODI later and a LOKI mini. Yes that means you pay like $80 initially for an internal DAC you may not use later, but just to say that if you just want to start with one box like the MAGNI UNITY with DAC, it doesn't mean you have to get rid of it later if you want to build up a stack over time.

I went with the JDS Atom stack because they also sell the matching Subjective3 old school EQ. It’s SO nice to have the ability to instantly scoop the mids, boost the bass, or roll off the highs when a particular song call for it. No digging through an app interface for EQ curves. Just twist a couple dials and you’re set. It’s probably my favorite audio component right now.

I personally use Schiit Fulla E and I must say I am more than happy with results ... although I am not using any power hungry headphones, mainly Fidelio X2s and from the other end I have connected Edifiers R1700s and both sound great through this.

For newbies who are likely to upgrade their desktop setup, I typically recommend a tongle to get started. They will work for desktop use and do a great job with the majority of cans out there. Then you can eventually upgrade your desktop setup and still use the dongle for mobile use. I have a Fiio BTR5 and it powers a Sundara and a HD600 and sounds great. It can run through USB or bluetooth so I can use it to wirelessly connect to my phone or computer. Plus, you can get a lot of these dongles for $100 USD.

I absolutely love my JDS Element III Mk2 (DAC/amp all-in-one); it has enough power for 99% of my headphones and iems, small footprint, and with the latest firmware gives you the ability to EQ multiple bands of bass and treble. It is double the price of most of the units mentioned in the video ($450) but absolutely worth it imo to save up a little more.

I started with the magni modi stack and the hd6xx's years back, and since then have moved on to a bifrost/jotunheim stack with HE6se's that I love. it definitely gets crazy when you start loving your audio and wanting to explore the alternatives out there.

  • @jerryodom4542
    @jerryodom4542 5 місяців тому

Excellent video! I've always LOVED everything Schiit. I've gone through a fair number of their stuff (modi/magni, valhalla, lyr, ending up with a Bifrost/Jotunheim stack). Tried a JDS labs O2 amp way before any of that which was great too. Also LOVE the 1990s which is a fantastic combo with the warmer tone of the Schiit stuff (at least what I have).
Anyway, even though I love the look of Schiit and having a simple (and gorgeous) volume knob and aren't normally attracted to dongle-dacs, for dac/amp bang for the buck (at least for cans that aren't power hungry) you could do a lot worse than the Earmen Eagle. It's not a Bifrost - it doesn't quite have the depth or dynamics - but it's absolutely crystal, fast, detailed, flat, and incredible separation and imaging. Doesn't really push the 1990s properly but the fact that it takes up almost no space on a desk and also can be used with your phone in a pocket... A+++.
But now you got me considering the Unity to use at work. :)
[Edit: Upon testing again, the Eagle does just fine pushing the 1990s. About 50% volume of the Eagle starts pushing comfortable listening volume. So, definitely a contender for a great all-rounder for nearly any headphone.]

I’ve gone up since then to the JDS Labs Element III mkii. It’s 450 but an all in 1 with enough power for 99% of headphones out there. It’s all metal with a BIG knob, amazing build with the BEST customer service in the business from JDS Labs here in the states. Can’t recommend them enough.

The Fiio K7 volume pot is digital compared to the other ones which are fully analogue. That means it's non linear in its output, which explains the volume hikes at different increments.
The bass boost on the Zen Dac V2 is not DSP, but instead employs some analogue wizardry according to iFi's spec sheets - probably a low pass/low shelf analogue filter.

For HP amps/dacs, I have K7, Zen DAC V2, DX3pro+, as well as Zen Can, L50/E50 stack, L30II, Atom Amp+, & Liquid Spark. All killer units. Ive tried all kinds of combos for my fav HP's (Arya Stealth, XS, Sundara, M50X, 840a, 770 250ohm, 700x, 6xx, 560, etc.). Depending on the HP/speaker, you may prefer one sound over the other. However, for AIO's I must say that the DX3pro+/6xx match is PERFECT. The clinical and wider presentation of the DX3 really synergizes with the lush & narrower 6xx. Overall, the smooth & liquid presentation, farther sounstage matched with the versitility of xbass, and the plug and play design, makes the Zen DAC still a great choice. The K7 has a meaty/black/tight sound and more routing, but has finnicky controls. So many great options! - its never been a better time to be a beginner audio enthusiast!

My first Schitt gear is the Magni Unity that I ordered a couple days ago. Still waiting for delivery. I reviewed just about all those options you went through and figured Schitt has the most consistently positive reviews with no quirks of them all. I've heard about glitches with the K11. I'm not a fan of the limited inputs with the Schitt especially in case I want to run an external streamer to it (although it does have RCA pass through) using the DAC, but that's a sacrifice I was willing to make. Just starting out and will look for a pair of decent cans next. Thanks for the consolidated info. And the beard game is hard.

I always thougth that the D2 sounds good and I don't feel the need to replace it. The main reason I bought the DX3 is because the realtek chip of my motherboard is broken and I can't connect the D2 through optical and must use USB, so it's limited to 16/48, while the DX3 can run full 32/768 through USB. It's one of the best decisions I made
Now with the DX3 i hear more nuance in music and I can play DSDs, which sounds incredible....

The iFi "audiophile" power adapter actually made a massive difference for me & my setup -- but I imagine I'm very much an exception to the rule. It really only matters if you have problems w/ buzzing and electrical noise due to dirty power from the wall or a sketchy extension cable.
As for me, I have a Zen DAC V2 fed (and powered over USB) by a Zen Stream sitting on a corner table w/ a built-in outlet. Plugging the Zen Stream into that corner table's outlet with a standard 5V adapter and listening to the Zen DAC w/ a sensitive IEM resulted in so much buzzing & popping that I genuinely thought I received defective products.
After doing some research, I picked up that $70 wall wort and it almost completely eliminated the electrical noise. So I can confirm -- it definitely works (and seems to be priced in line with other similar products), but unless you have significant problems with electrical noise on your amp/dac, then its only value is as a placebo.

One thing to note about the Zen DAC. There is a reason why it has a USB 3.0 Type B plug and cable. Plugging it in to the appropriate port is the only way it can get the full balanced power out without needing an external power supply. Otherwise, if you were to use an ordinary printer cable, the external power supply becomes necessary.

Great video. Now I need a headphones one. How far behind would a Sound BlasterX G6 would be fro any on this list?
I was looking at sound blasterx g6 reviews. I was looking for something that would work for game and music. The G6 offered some nice features in case I need them. I just don't wanna buy something fully for media consumption. And then have to buy a separate "gaming" set o I have voicemix/chatmix. Or have to rely on a complex multi equipment setup so I can just up and down the voicechat volume separately. Without having to go into a software or something. And the G6 is the only one I've found with said feature. Apart from dedicated gaming headset, that I'm sure would not perform as good as a good pair of cans and dac/amp when outside of gaming. Like the Arctis Pro series, that seems features packed. But I'm getting mix feelings about it.
It's a big spending for me. So I rather get it right in one go. Some times people wanna save money and end up spending more trying to fix their first pick. I rather spent a little more and not regret it. (although gaming headsets aren't exactly cheap now)

and I decided to buy the new D90 III topping dac, when comparing them, I have noticed that the new D90 III sounds more open, more transparent but I notice that it has a little more highs, and it lacks body and punch in the bass. Compared to my d90se, my question is, do dacs need a burn-in time to improve the sound? Will the bass appear and the highs calm down in this new DAC, after using it for a while? Or will its sound not change at all? I would love to know your opinion, thank you very much friend.

After watching reviews for days I went with the Topping DX3 Pro+ and got it on sale for ~160€ as my first DAC/AMP. Absolutely no regrets. Like you said: Really clean sound. This gives you the option to then fine-tune your headphones/ IEM through Peace EQ.
Also one thing about this unit: I do not use Bluetooth or the remote at all ... at least for now. At some point I wanna buy proper speakers for my living room and will then use the Topping over there and suddenly the remote and bluetooth is massive! Even if you buy a higher end DAC/Amp later down the road, this unit can then be used for something else.
You really cannot go wrong with this. In my opinion the best entry-level DAC/Amp.

I would recommend looking at the use of a streamer instead of the Bluetooth, there's a decent drop in sound quality when using Bluetooth. That being said, it all depends on your source and if you care haha. WiiM makes some good and affordable options, I've been using my WiiM pro since it came our and very happy with it (i feed it into external dac and amp). They now also have a version with a built in amp and dac but that would defeat the purpose of you having the dx3 pro already, dac in there would most likely be better. That being said, if you're happy with Bluetooth transmitted source then your option is perfect for your use case! (You could still use your dx3 with the wiim pro and use the dx3 as digital volume control + DAC. Alternatively wiim can be set to control volume, remotes are available, I haven't used that.)
