This song is about how The War changed parenthood at the time. Father’s were out fighting and Mothers at the time were becoming very protective and in some ways overbearing to where it would lead to psychological damage to a generation of kids (young men in particular) ! This song not only captures a emotional sense but also a period of time ! Genius!
Yes! That’s exactly it… we actually have a world like that now, helicopter parents, so afraid to let their children have their own failures and successes…
This is why PF is so special and so timeless. They can snatch at your heart even when you've heard this song a hundred times. I was choked up right along with you. They're not even trying for cheap emotional grabs, they don't have to. They're just really good at creating profound music that will last the ages.
Spot on mate. I first heard PF at least 30 years ago and to this day, it still influences me. No matter what happens in life, PF will have a reference to it. It's a great way to keep your feet on the ground and live in the real world.
It always makes me sad watching people hear Pink Floyd as adults for the first time. They go in thinking it's going to be so relaxing, sweet, and calming and end up devastated.
The song is about depression and anxiety. He is depressed and anxious and his building an emotional wall around himself, while his overprotecting mother is helping him build that wall, isolating him from the world. The last line "Mother does it needs to be so high" refers to that wall she is building around him.
My story for sure. This is the story of all of those with absent fathers for whatever reasons. The young son has questions over fears, the mother has fears over being alone so she overprotects. Soooo much psychology in this
I still cry 42 years later. My father passed when I was 10 right before this came out. This album was my release and my life. I built that wall and my mother certainly laid A lot of those bricks. All good now. She still takes care of me and is still over protective so I am blessed. Cry away... Let it out, don't keep building.
Pink Floyd always seem to make people introspective and philosophical, often invoking deep memories. They have a way of cutting straight to the heart of things. Loved the reaction.
Sarah, but I think in this case Roger Waters (Pink) views his mother's behavior as overprotective, which in many cases is not good for her child. She clears the way for him and solves all his problems for him (building an imaginary wall around him). Pink later realizes this and asks at the end, "Mother, did it need to be so high?". Waters (the lyricist) makes retrospective references to his childhood and youth throughout The Wall, and the whole album is inspired by this...
Ahhh yess that too! That also crossed my mind in the middle of the song especially with the "Mama's gonna check out all your girlfriends for you Mama won't let anyone dirty get through" part. In My mind I was "that's a bit too much but okayyyy lol. Thank you for sharing your perspective 🙏
@@SarahDengler Yes, this. Very touching. You bravely stayed with the song even though it was taking you emotional places as a daughter and a mother. Yes, we all can relate. My Mom once told me "I love you. And a mother's love is forever." And that's how it stands for us all.
Dear Sarah Dengler thank you so much for being there. I lost my dear sweet beautiful Mother on 20/1/2022, and it has been extremely difficult to come to terms with, still wanting to ring her whenever something special happens, and she's not there. I love how your emotion kicked in to high gear when the electric guitar kicks in after Mama's gonna help build the wall. Such a powerful moment in the song.

I love watching people get their first taste of PF. I’ve done my bit over the years turning people who wouldn’t ordinarily listen to them on to their music. There’s something about it that cuts straight to the heart. Legends!
Greetings here from Greece! What a great and thoughtfull of a song, loved your reaction. Pink Floyd are so deep, hope to see more reactions from their songs.
Great Reaction To A Classic Song. Thank You For Playing This Song. I Hadn’t Listened To It For Years. Pink Floyd Has The Knack Of Making You Think Outside The Box. 🤔
In the complete concept/story of the album "The Wall", if you listen to the lyrics closely, this is about an over protective mother who will help built that preverbal Wall around her child which can be both a good thing and a long term negative effect on a child's upbringing. The final phrase [Mother did it need to be so High] at the end of the song questions this "wall" she built around him because in the story of the album, he goes through some real personal issues relationship-wise.
Everybody's fav guitar solo is usually comfortably numb or time or sorrow and they are all classics. But for me it's always been mother. Recorded or live version I find it so overwhelming and it hit hard. Literally everytime I hear it it's like listening to it for the 1st time. It sucks the air out the room..... 😀
Your reaction to this song was so impactful. Love your passion for life, kids, mother and the music. This song is from 1979 and it is Still timeless. Just like you. Much love and compassion to you and to your family.
Pink Floyd music is like a drug it can take you on an emotional ride you've never experienced before and they keep you coming back for more...I'm so glad I grew up in the Era of PF music...the only sad part is I'll never know the feeling of hearing Pink Floyd for the first time.
This song also gets to me and I don't have a mother. She died before I grew up. Whenever I listen to this I wonder what my mother would have said to me as a young person facing the uncertainties of the world - dating, leaving home, going to war, getting married and all those things.
I have watched many reactions to this song and very very few really understand the real meaning to this song. It is not about your mother loving guidance. It is about a mothers control over her son. NOW I have been listening to this song since 1979 a few hundred times at least. I have seen the movie multiple times. I have seen the concert live. I know the meaning of this album. Now I get it if you are a first timer listening to this song. I can see how 99% of reactors thing it is about a loving mother. I can also see why as a stand alone song one would think that. It could have that meaning as a stand alone single. But it is one chapter of a 26 chapter story. This album was meant to be listened to in its entirety over and over and over again.
