This song is about how The War changed parenthood at the time. Father’s were out fighting and Mothers at the time were becoming very protective and in some ways overbearing to where it would lead to psychological damage to a generation of kids (young men in particular) ! This song not only captures a emotional sense but also a period of time ! Genius!

This is why PF is so special and so timeless. They can snatch at your heart even when you've heard this song a hundred times. I was choked up right along with you. They're not even trying for cheap emotional grabs, they don't have to. They're just really good at creating profound music that will last the ages.

The song is about depression and anxiety. He is depressed and anxious and his building an emotional wall around himself, while his overprotecting mother is helping him build that wall, isolating him from the world. The last line "Mother does it needs to be so high" refers to that wall she is building around him.

I still cry 42 years later. My father passed when I was 10 right before this came out. This album was my release and my life. I built that wall and my mother certainly laid A lot of those bricks. All good now. She still takes care of me and is still over protective so I am blessed. Cry away... Let it out, don't keep building.

Sarah, but I think in this case Roger Waters (Pink) views his mother's behavior as overprotective, which in many cases is not good for her child. She clears the way for him and solves all his problems for him (building an imaginary wall around him). Pink later realizes this and asks at the end, "Mother, did it need to be so high?".
Waters (the lyricist) makes retrospective references to his childhood and youth throughout The Wall, and the whole album is inspired by this...

In the complete concept/story of the album "The Wall", if you listen to the lyrics closely, this is about an over protective mother who will help built that preverbal Wall around her child which can be both a good thing and a long term negative effect on a child's upbringing.
The final phrase [Mother did it need to be so High] at the end of the song questions this "wall" she built around him because in the story of the album, he goes through some real personal issues relationship-wise.

I have watched many reactions to this song and very very few really understand the real meaning to this song. It is not about your mother loving guidance. It is about a mothers control over her son. NOW I have been listening to this song since 1979 a few hundred times at least. I have seen the movie multiple times. I have seen the concert live. I know the meaning of this album. Now I get it if you are a first timer listening to this song. I can see how 99% of reactors thing it is about a loving mother. I can also see why as a stand alone song one would think that. It could have that meaning as a stand alone single. But it is one chapter of a 26 chapter story. This album was meant to be listened to in its entirety over and over and over again.

Haven't read any of the other comments, but:
The reason Pink Floyd is so amazing is because they sing about themselves, and.. surprise... they're people and they sing about their own problems, issues, memories, everything that makes us people... that's why we can all identify with their music. Because we are all people as well.
And BTW: Dave Gilmour is the only person that can make me cry with his guitar, and Waters the only one with his lyrics...

I was blessed to hear this Album when it came out. And Sarah, l can also relate- then and now. I really liked your honest reaction to this song.

Wow. This was the most genuine, heart felt, tear jerker reaction video I’ve ever seen!! I felt your emotions during this song. I lost my mom six months ago, I miss her everyday. Thank you for this!

Pure joy watching you cry. Not because it's fun seeing tears. But because you "get it."

The music can be evocative in different ways for different people. I do think you might’ve missed the message. However, I’m glad you embraced it so much.

Thank you sooo much for your true, raw reaction. It was beautiful and you show others that every song touches someone in some way. This particular song touches many of us in some small way. Every line in the song reminds someone of their own experience. You are so wise to realize your perceived short comings. That wisdom will help you approach motherhood with the thoughtfulness and care it deserves. God bless in in your journey and thank you again for making us all FEEL something while we watched you.
