  • Diesel heater in the winter. Diesel heater in a rooftop tent is a really nice set up in the winter, or even fall/ spring for that matter. With some inspiration from some other folks around me I believe I’ve come up with one of the best methods for running the diesel heater to a rooftop tent or even a ground tent near your vehicle.
    I’m using a Vevor diesel heater:
    bit.ly/352UWWE
    Other Vevor diesel heaters: bit.ly/328jZ9W
    They have a Code:
    GO5 to save 5$ off
    GO10 to save 10$ off over 200$
    Step: amzn.to/3HTN8Fs
    Hose: amzn.to/3oQd0dW
    Hand Clamps: amzn.to/3GVv2l0
    Hole Saw Bit: amzn.to/3I04Ebi
    Clamp on Chord 12v: amzn.to/34YKuPY
    Solder old 12v Chord: amzn.to/33moSN5
    What I’m using for straps, you may have to strap the hose depending on your tent: envisionedprod...
    Shoutout to The Gear Bunker for inspiring this design! • Chinese Diesel Heater ...

      I’d like to use this on a UTV while in motion for winter time, and remove in the summer. Is there a safety feature where I wouldn’t be able to run the heater while driving around? Mainly flat ground but occasionally hitting hills. I’ll obviously have it sitting in a sturdy mount.

      @@ctea89Years ago they used a similar heater in VWs as the heater off the air cooled engine was pathetic. I never heard of any problems and they are similar to theses heaters. I’d like heater in my UTV also and have looked into putting one it from the factory.

    FINELY someone smart enough to mount their heater on a tire step! Every time I see one of these video's for roof top campers the person is always speculating "where should I put the heater"and I'm like on a tire step!! One thing I did notice is your muffler has a weep hole and that should be pointed down to allow for condensation drainage!

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  2 роки тому +3

      Oh I didn’t even notice that. I’ll have to take a closer look at that when I set it up. Using it this weekend so I will make sure I put the muffler the right way.

    An observation. You may have the muffler attached 90 degrees off the angle recommended by Vevor, probably because it looks better. Like a car, the muffler can collect condensed water from the exhaust and eventually rust out. It is built with a weep hole along one edge to allow condensate to drain out and not collect inside the muffler. The configuration I saw in the video has the muffler sideways/horizontally (i.e. as if laying on a flat surface) rather than vertically with the weep hole at the bottom. The other hole (opposite the weep hole) is to allow you to attach the muffler to a bracket to keep it from moving around.

    • @miscponderations1014

    If you mount the heater outside, you are heating outside air so the exhaust should be directed downwind so you don't suck it back into the structure you're trying to heat.

    • @cruisesailing

    Nice video. These are important as the instructions that come with the units are pretty much useless. One suggestion: in 7.45 you have your muffler sideways. The weep hole must be pointed down so condesation can drip out.
    Also, a genuine Webasto muffler is much quieter but adds to the cost. Quieter fuel pumps can also be sourced and/or the fuel pump can be muffled with some imagination and work. These issues might be important if you install the heater in a camper or something where you can hear it actually working during night and if you are a light sleeper.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  Рік тому

      I wish I had the funds for a true Webasto, maybe one day but I guess even the muffler wouldn’t be too much. As much as I winter camp it might be worth it to get an expensive heater.

      @@OXFOOT Luckily there are many videos where people explain how to use the control panel too. It has some functions which are quite difficult to figure out by oneself if one doesn't even know they are possible. Like tuning the air/fuel -ratio to make the heater work better and produce less soot. Also several good how to service the burner videos are on the tube. Very simple really, user doable easily. Guys in UK seem to use these a lot and they have made loads of interesting videos (tuning, servicing, improvements etc.).
      BTW. you can order the little burner meshes separately from the ebay. Those are good to have for servicing the unit, especially if its been running rich for awhile.

    I just got one of these diesel heaters a couple months ago for camping in my jeep xj. This winter in Minnesota is crazy cold and this heater is a complete came changer! I set mine on a trailer hitch cargo basket and cover it with a large tote that I store the unit and 10ft hose in. I cut a 3in hole in the side of the tote for the hot air and by flipping the tote over and covering the heater, it can draw fresh air in from the open bottom as well as getting rid of the exhaust. This looks like a portable version of a bunk heater we use in semi trucks. So I’ve got some questions!
    What kind of temps have you used this at?
    Did you use #1 or #2 or a mix?
    Do you think the muffler gets to hot to mount it and the flex pipe up under that tire step utilizing heat wrap on exhaust and high heat paint on the step? pondering how I could condense it down more.
    How hard was it on fuel? Can a guy let her idle all day if the vehicle is staying put and your setup? Some days if we don’t leave ours running up here your gonna have a bad time when ya need it that night!

      It’s pretty much adapted from the trucking industry. Heard that’s where it started and people moved it to vans and then eventually to the offroad/camping world.
      I have used 1 more often but 2 seems to be the most straight forward and easy to modify. One is an 8kw I believe and the new one is 5kw.
      I considered that idea keeping it mounted to the step but then it wouldn’t sit well when traveling so I’d be interested in a concept where it easily mounts at camp, however I’d have to test and see how hot it gets compared to the paint. Maybe there’s a way to mount it that doesn’t transfer the heat?

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  2 роки тому +1

      So for fuel it’s probably the most efficient heating system I’ve used. It used about a gallon in a night running not full blast but pretty high. The capacity is 2 gallons I believe. If you ran it on low it would be ideal but I was running it so high that it was too warm for a sleeping bag ha. Just wanted to test it and even though it was really too warm in there, the dry heat felt nice after being so cold in the snow previously.

      No this was running off of a 2000 watt powerbank. The heater draws between 1 and 2 Amps per hour. Let’s split the difference and say 1.5 amps with a 12 volt power source so you’d be drawing 18 watts per hour. On the high end you could be drawing 24 watts per hour. So let’s say the absolute worst case scenario in 8 hours you’d be using a little less than 200 watts. That being said that doesn’t factor in the 5-10 minutes of priming at start up where it draws about 10amps.

      Wow, thank you so much for the detailed reply! That clears up a lot. Since I’m easing my baby into camping I won’t be doing long multi day trips, so with this info my little bank should do just find for a weekend trip. Thank you again for the reply. I’ve been watching a ton of your videos to help get my new Lime Rush 4Runner ready for some over landing trips.

      @@DrDenticle and also not that this draw could vary depending on the model. I’d look at reviews of which ever model you get and see what the amp draw is. I’ve not actually hooked mine up to see what the draw is, my information is based on what other people have told me the draw of my heater is.

    Diesel starts to freeze at like 30 degrees. What is your experience using these in Temps 0-30? How does the diesel not start to gel? Does it matter?

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  2 роки тому

      I haven’t had an issue with it. Maybe the unit warms up and that keeps it above 30, but I am going to try out a propane and maybe another heater as well this next winter.

  • @samrecord
    @samrecord 2 роки тому +1

    How do you prevent the diesel fuel from freezing/gelling? I'm concerned.
    Since this happens as high as 32F/0C.
    Do you use additives?

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  2 роки тому

      I haven’t had this happen some how. The point has been brought up that additives are useful, but maybe because the unit itself got warm and kept the unit going above 32 somehow… frankly I’m not sure how it stayed running if that was the case.

    Depends on how much diesel is vs propane

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  Рік тому

      That is a downside. It seems like the price of diesel keeps going up. But I think it’s not too much more than propane. If you are using those little green propane tanks then the diesel fuel would actually be more cost effective.

    The heater had to be plugged into 12v outlet?

  • @Emeraldmaster100

    Hey quick question, is this heater waterproof?? Or how you keep it out of the rain

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  Рік тому

      So it’s not water proof, it’s water resistant when you use a covering for the screen. However I will likely be trying out a heater that’s completely sealed this winter ti see how much better that is or if it’s worth it.

    @oxfoot so I’m curious if purchasing on Amazon how do we know which unit has the back 12v connections that you displayed making it super simple in order to use the other side to plug into our solar generators.

    • @OXFOOT

      I’ll have to look on Amazon and see. I went through their website so I’m not positive about which ones on Amazon have that.

    The hose doesnt get too hot? Wondering if it needs to get wrapped so it doesnt melt the RTT

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  Рік тому +1

      In my experience no, I could even touch it and not burn myself, but many folks have recommended getting insulated hose. Less heat loss and probably less likely to burn something.

      You can set it to either thermostat mode or change it to a different mode that lets you set which level you want it at (low/med/high)

    How long does it run with 3/4 tank? Also what vent is on the hose (goes in tent)?

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  2 роки тому

      There are a ton of factors that will change the length of time it can run. I ran mine sun up to sun down on a low setting and used like 1/4 or so. If you run it on high it might not do a whole night for all I know.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  2 роки тому

      The vent comes with the heater. I just moved it up to the other hose.

    Hi have you ever had issues with the unit being outside in the freezing temps?

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  Рік тому

      I have not but it is a concern for sure. It’s not 100% water proof. I cover the LED screen but apparently that’s actually not even a point of contention. I’m trying to come up with something but so far I haven’t and I keep using it in the snow anyways. Water resistant keeps me using it, but water proof would make me feel better.
