For me, the most interesting parts about Guthries playing are his note choices and phrasing. This compilation only featured his most frantic shredding, hope you’ll get to see more of his incredible versatility.

yea I was disappointed in this compilation. it was just a bunch of flashy playing, but it didnt demonstrate Guthrie's greatest strengths as a guitarist: his sense of melody, seemingly bottomless pit of novel ideas when improvising, and (as you mentioned in your comment) his note choices and phrasing. there are plenty of players who can play as fast, and faster, than Guthrie Govan; however, there are virtually NO other players who can rival how interesting and satisfying his playing is to the ear. also, of course, his complete mastery over almost every style and genre of guitar music.

It's a shame that whoever put the compilation together used so many similar 'bits'. GG plays stellar clean guitar and mixes it up really well.

That was exactly my thought. This does nothing to show off the best of his playing.

The videos of him playing for Hans Zimmer are awesome - one where he broke a string and recovered the loss of tuning using slide, and the other of the Man-of-Steel theme with Zimmer looking on in amazement. Of course, his improvised first-take solos for Steven Wilson's Hand Cannot Erase are legendary.

All these clips are of him just shredding. It doesn't get into the real nuanced aspect of his playing. He's pretty limitless in his ability. He can literally shred your face off, but also play the most beautiful and soulful lines that you'll ever hear.

It's so satisfying to see someone do so much with such minimal movement

Honestly this is a cool bunch of clips, but you should hear him play his tune Rhode Island shred. He's the most hardcore Nashville guy, you won't believe his pickin

Gotta catch the live version of Lousiville Stomp with his band The Aristocrats, its killer.

I saw his band The Aristocrats about a week ago, the other members being drummer Marco Minnemann and bassist Bryan Beller. "Bad Asteroid" is one of their best known songs and a people's favourite. You could check that one out, please. :)

Guthrie Govan the wizard of guitar. He can read and transcribe music. Very few guitarist can do that. He's also a master of country chicken picken

You really need to check out Guthrie with the Aristocrats doing Flatlands Live at The Atlanta Institute of Music. Last Orders is another great one. Both show the more "mellow" Guthrie. Louisville Stomp is another one that not just a shredfest that Country Guitarists might appreciate.

Yet for all his amazingly awesome technical ability, he's not even in my top ten.

    • @gabrielp9646
      @gabrielp9646 3 місяці тому +2

@Strange_Cub - Seems like a YOU problem... When you reach a certain level of technical ability, and you can do everything these famous guitar players can do.. You start to realize that "top tens" have absolutely nothing to do with technicality... Some extremely complicated techniques come easily and naturally to some people. EVERYTHING comes from an emotional response, or from personal taste.. Technical ability is not really measurable: I can bring an Yngwe Malsteem song to one of my students, and he will struggle with it for days... And another student would learn it in like 10 min, with ease... But the first guy can play Entre dos Aguas by Paco de Lucía with his eyes closed.. And the shredder guy, who learned Malmsteen in 4 minutes, its looking at him like "Whoah..."
Good guitarists KNOW that there is no "superior" technical ability.. They don´t look at other musicians like that.. They just think "Oh, that technique this guy is doing is cool, Im gonna learn it". They don´t look at other guitar players and think "Im better than this guy" or "This guy is faster than me..." No. They know they have strengths and weaknesses... Someone like Guthrie doesn´t look at someone like Kirk Hammet and thinks "Im better than him..." He think´s "Oh, he´s not very "clean", but he´s really good at coming up with iconic guitar riffs, melodies and motives... How can I learn from him?" He would NEVER think "Im better than Kirk Hammet" just because he´s faster, or more knowledgeable in musical theory... He just thinks "Oh, what can I learn from this guitarist, who is SO DIFFERENT from me?"

@@gabrielp9646 I don't have a problem at all. I acknowledged his amazing ability and I said nothing about anyone being better than anyone. All I said is that he doesn't rank among my ten personal favourite guitarists based solely on the music that comes out of his guitar. 🙂 Why is everyone looking for an argument these days?
You said "top tens have nothing to do with technicality" - my point exactly! 👍

These are some of the most boring examples of his playing. Genuinly very samey shredding. Impressive technically but musically relatively uninteresting. The best parts of his playing are the total opposite

  • @enharmonic77

Why didn't you actually do some research and find some of Guthrie actually playing country, he is at the top of the game for country playing, and nothing was shown in the collage. Seems a shame as your a country man. Great vid though

Ugh... When are people going to learn that you CAN´T react to (or listen to) SOLO COMPILATIONS... It´s like listening to a "choruses compilation" or "verses compilation..." You. Need. The. Context. Of. The. Rest. Of. The. Song. Especially with musical guys like Guthrie... This was frustrating to watch.
