But did the ending make any sense? Did any of it make any sense since Guts left his friends? Griffith's aim was to achieve his dream no matter what the cost but the moment Guts leaves, Griffith throws everything out of the window and destroys himself. This show's ending is 100x worse than Game of Thrones. Writer was out of ideas during the end of movie 2 and the movie 3 is full of sex and weird creatures made by a 5 yr old.

in my opinion i think the best part of these movies is how nicely all the noses are drawn, guts' nose is so shockingly cute sometimes, 10/10 completely changed the way i draw faces
but to be more serious i really like the way everyone in these movies is drawn, they found a way to reeally simplify miura's art but still keep the charm, if they couldve done the golden age as a series of OVAs hellsing ultimate style then maybe they couldve fit everything in there

This trilogy was my gateway to berserk. During the lockdown last year i was bored and itching for something to fill the witcher/dark souls vibes i had been missing. Gave berserk a chance and wow did these films make me fall in love. From a newbie POV i felt it was an amazing epic. I went on to watching the old anime after that to get more background before finally buying the deluxe editions of the manga. I think looking back at it all the studio was improving in such an amazing way and I disagree with the hate they get. I would love for them to return and make the black swordsman arc next! That could fit into a nice trilogy followed by lost children for another trio of films.

Depending on your initial exposure to Berserk you are most likely going to be fond of that specific version. For example if it was the manga then you watched this movie you will be criticizing it at every turn because of how condensed and how much stuff they changed and cut out. The movie lacks a lot, it doesn't give the time to develop the characters and their motivations as much as the Manga and even the original anime. I was constantly comparing the two but someone new wouldn't be.

I agree with almost everything that you said except for the eclipse. The fact that the movie did not need to censor itself and Skull Knight existing in this adaptation meant that the arc had an actual ending; because of that I found the movie version of the eclipse better in every way in comparison to the original anime series.
I remember being pissed off after watching the original ending of Berserk because it was not even an ending, the series kind of just ended in the middle of scene without any since of conclusion whatsoever.
I am hoping that the Powerhouse Animation
, the animation team behind Castlevania gets to pick up Berserk and we can get an animated series of the entire Berserk series for once. That fight with Striga vs the villagers in season 4 was a major nod to Berserk made me believe that if that got to control Berserk that the series would be in good hands.

    • @Stevem

My biggest gripe with the animated series is the Adonis scene.
Guts in the manga 100% didn't see the kid, but a silhouette and even then he hid before he saw anything else and pretty much ran around the corner in a blink of an eye.
The anime severely messed up Guts characterization in this instant. In the series. He sees the kid, thinks the kid would tell the guards then kills the kid and then he starts feeling guilty? No. The kid dying was a massive mistake in the manga. Like a huge one. It was completely out of Guts' control on what happened.
And I guarantee it inluenced how people saw Guts. People must've thought he was the edgiest of all edges and that a kid couldn't escape the edge. When even in the Black Swordsman arc. He didn't hurt kids on his own volition. Sure he traumatized them by using them as bait or telling a one to kill themself. He never intentionally went out of his way to hurt kids aside from their feelings.
The movie Nailed this scene. It was basically a 1 for 1 of the manga. The animated series kind of messed this part of bad.

I definitely believe It's worth checking the Golden age trilogy films, If you're a fan of the original manga or even the 1997 show.
I personally have a massive soft spot for the Golden age trilogy films, even with their flaws, and even some of the original scenes like the Guts and Casca's dance scene.
Coincidentally my grandmother actually brought me the trilogy of the films not too long ago, and finally I received them in person yesterday. Along with a genga cel from one of the movies, the artwork is gorgeous. ( Now, I am super happy to own an actual piece of one of those films.)
However, on the contrary, while I do love these films my biggest problem is definitely the runtime/lack of quiet and intimate interactions between the Band of the Hawk.
For example, the Bonfire of Dreams is still to this day my favourite Berserk moment from both the manga and 1997 anime, and later my love for that chapter became more apparent during the chapters of Farnese and Schierke going through Casca's memories!
The CGI never really bothered me, personally, It's no Berserk 2016/17 but It can be a little distracting considering on how gorgeous some of the visuals are!

To date the 97 version is still the best. I enjoyed the OVA's but as you pointed out there's just a lot missing and you get that feeling whether you saw the original or not. I don't think a movie format would do the Manga justice. That said, I acknowledge the massive undertaking it would require for any studio to attempt another series. I personally think this needs a 2D treatment, that is why the last series failed. If someone like Netflix takes this on they would HAVE to acknowledge the budget requirements and have complete faith in it which is a risk but you can't half ass a property like this. We saw this with Castlevania...1st season had only 4 episodes which showed their hesitation and while the series overall was good, you can clearly see the budget cuts during each season because they had to save it for the last big boss fight. Berserk would need consistency throughout.

A lot of people have gotten into Berserk because of the film trilogy simply because it's on Netflix and the easiest to come across. I actually saw it before reading the manga, and I wasn't confused by it at all; in fact I was even more hyped to finally read it; especially after watching SuperEyePatch Wolf's video on why you should read Berserk all those years ago. The trilogy was the final push to get me started.
It would be interesting to know how many new Berserk fans started with the film trilogy that had heard of Berserk before that.

All vastly superior to the manga (no disrespect, of course, but this is what cinema is about!). The way they did Void deflecting Skull Knight's sword is insanely better than that one confusing panel in the original. When Slan rises, Guts' fury and despair, Femto's evil, all just hypnotize you. I agreed that it was a shorter and more accessible version of it. I personally enjoyed the experience a lot, especially in a time with so much bad things to watch, having more berserk did not bothered me. The accessible part is important as well so it can be passed around easier. Especially in the western culture, people tend to go to very stereotypical kind of anime to watch. So from that standpoint is cool to have a compressed version of the arc, easier to sell one movie than 20+ episodes

I even watched The 2016 stuff and it was... ok. I don't think it was god awful but it wasn't great either. I just watched it because I wanted more Berserk. Everyone tells me to read the manga but the thing that puts me off is it's all black and white. One of the main reasons I like graphic novels is the beautifully coloured artwork and I find it not as enjoyable in plain black and white. The Deluxe Berserk books aren't exactly cheap and I wouldn't mind paying so much if they were colour but to get them all it's like £500.

I don't perceive the trilogy as a definitive or even good way to experience Berserk or the Golden Age for the first time. I see it more as something for Berserk fans, taking individual moments from the saga and giving them animated justice. That's why I think the third film is the only worthwhile one, because its depiction of the Eclipse and The Sprint are everything I could want in a faithful Berserk adaptation. The others have their moments, sure, but there's not much you can do when plagued with the curse of adapting Berserk.
