There was a lot of heart and hard work put into it. Guts ‘97: “I need it. I need to fight until the voices stop. I want to fight until I remember nothing!” That’s why I love the English dub.

The JoJo anime perfectly captures the spirit and tone of the manga. If anyone eventually pulls that off with Berserk, it will be amazing. Just fantastic. Chainsaw Man is another example of adapting the Manga in a very effective way, despite it just coming out a few years ago. I wish we could get even a mediocre Berserk that covers all the arc
@Urn Turn I feel that the story's strength comes from both its artistic display as well as the way it delivers the story. 2016 gave the story but not the animation or artistic display.
It's not really reasonable to expect any adaptation to live up to Berserk's art. 1997 didn't either, though it didn't fail as badly as 2016 did. Berserk may just be the most beautiful manga out there, in no small part due to Miura's insane attention to detail. No 1997 anime with a standard budged could possibly live up to that. A modern anime with Mob Psycho-tier animation may possibly be able to, but 2016 was certainly not that. Even then, it's far from certain. Mob Psycho had the source material's minimalist, purposefully clumsy and flat art style working for it. Not having to put as much in every frame allowed the animators to draw a lot more frames. Compare that with Berserk, which has insane amounts of details and shading in every frame. I'm partly convinced that even modern animation could never live up to Berserk's art within a reasonable budget. For all intents and purposes, not even any modern manga should have been able to. The ever increasing level quality Miura put into Berserk's art was part of the reason for the manga's notoriously slow publication rate later on, to the anger of his editors. It wasn't something that could be sustainably kept up, but he did it anyway at the cost of only being able to publish a few chapters a year without working himself to death like he did earlier on when the manga had a stable monthly schedule. In the end, he could never finish the story.
Berserk can’t be 3D animated it’s that simple. I can’t even imagine how you look at some of the beautiful artwork throughout that Manga and decide it would ever be a good idea to turn that into CGI
i think there's only one part that would be better in 3d and that's the eclipse. those panoramic shots i think are really necessary to get the full scope of the dimension of abstract time. other than that i think the rest should be 2d because it's really needed to show the facial expressions and emotions of characters, something Miura painstakingly spent the most of his time perfecting.
Here's the thing, buddy. Since Berserk's manga has such amazing visuals, adapting it into animation would require either a heavily toned down artstyle (like the 1997 anime) or for the majority of it to be rendered in 3D (kinda like the movies). The problem isn't that they chose to render most of it in 3D. The problem is that they chose a director and studio that are highly inexperienced in 3D animation. The director was Shin Itagaki and while he's a very experienced director, he mainly specializes in cutesy moe anime and had no experience with 3D prior to Berserk 2016. The studio was Millepensee, whose only work prior to Berserk 2016 was a moe anime called Teekyuu, which had very cheap 2D animation and very fast-paced editing. To make things even worse, the production was an absolute mess. They spent a lot of time just trying to figure out what they were doing and trying to get everyone on the same page, and by the time they managed to pull themselves together, the deadline was approaching quickly and they had to rush everything, which resulted in the horrific mess we have now.
Honestly I guess the best Way to use 3D animation is by having IT as a refrence and the rotoscope it. That would make some scenes helluva more buetiful. The 2012-13 film trilogy did understand When IT was necessary to use 3D animation.
No it’s not, too much rock. Not enough orchestras or music that gives it that ethereal/fantasy feel. The music just makes it feel like a knockoff zombie show.
Ok to be fair I actually couldn't remember the music even though it was done by the shirou sagisa which is more of a testament to how bad the anime is. I actually had to UA-cam the ost to see if it was that bad It turned out it wasn't.
Ngl hated a decent amount of the songs. Too heroic sounding like “oh shit here he comes to save the day”. There are definitely some bangers in there for sure though.
Indeed. Berserk CAN be adapted - it HAS been adapted properly once already with the 97's animation. I mean, there's not much that can compare to the manga's fantastic art and feel, but at least the characters and story were properly conveyed, and personally I think they did well with the animation itself as well. While limited by budget, they did the best they could with it, and the end product is charming and thought through. It's such a shame that they didn't cover everything. Think of all the misery we could have been spared!
Watched this years ago without knowing much about berserk, went through the whole manga, and now i have the context to be absolutely horrified by this adaptation. Yay.
I was thinking about watching this show out of desperation. Thankfully I caved and read the books instead. I've never had a show make me actually pick up the source material before. The 90s show and that film trilogy are so damn good.
yup not to mention they made season 2 just for the sole reason of 5 minute Berserk armor action that's what i got from the whole full s2 and even that wasn't worth it
Look up Guts vs Grunbeld. Seriously look it up. Now compare that to Berserk 2017.... a fanmade edit of the PS2 game and PS4 game looks better than a 2017 anime.... let that sink in.
Yes it was, 99 percent of the story is it, theres no stupid changes, missing plot, stupid mistakes, and it's not cgi except for the 1st 4 openings which still looked way better than this
Jackio Makes That Booty Go Smakio I hate it everytime they use cgi in most things it never looks good. The last 2 db movies were good than they have random moments of cg when battle of gods had none
People always seem to look over the fact that Guts left to find his own dream, so that Griffith would see him as a true friend. Though that would never happen since Griffith is a liar and a hypocrite
I don't believe Griffith ever lied once or acted hypocritical. Griffith was a pretty open and straight forward person he'd March on toward his dream and cut down anyone or anything in his way. The fault lies with Guts and Griffith being unable to properly understand what they meant to each other.
@@fangwhiteclaw7089 that is not true, remember how he had guts doing his dirty work? And how he is letting the hawks believe that they are his friends? Dreamers are selfish, they will do anything to get what they want
I'm quite sure old Griffith saw him as a friend and same thing Guts with him. I just think that they never met someone similar to them especially Griffith never met anyone similar to him, so they pretty much misuderstood their own emotions. But Yeah, I believe they were truly friends.
Griffth and Guts were already friends, Griffith didnt want to admit it but he did treat Guts different from the team. He was special and set apart. Guts went off because he is Griffin’s friend.
The sheer rage in your voice when you said *"And that's a big, fucking problem when that's the main character of your show."* was so understandable. I have just finished reading the Conviction Arc and this series still is a pain to watch.
That's because they were using a form of animation that had been perfected for almost 100 years at that point. 2016 chose a style of animation that has rarely worked well. I can excuse how bad it looks for the sake of trying something they didn't have much experience with. The sound design and the clang is unforgivable. It's immediate, before I could even make an opinion on the animation style the clang made me hate the adaptation

Im lucky I was introduced to the series with the 1997 series in college and fell in so much i had to read the manga. Cant imagine seeing this garbage as my first introduction to Berserk.
Miura’s legacy died with this anime? Are you fucking kidding me? He was a manga artist. He could probably care less about any of the anime adaptations after 1997. The anime was merely made to get people to read the manga and boost sales of what made Berserk what it is. Who cares about the anime. His legacy will live on through his peers that will continue the manga.
Speaking as someone who's never firsthand experienced Berserk, looking at the comparison shots between manga and anime makes me think that an accurate recreation of the original artwork would take a theatrical-quality budget
You are absolutely right.....some of the panels of manga are so damn detailed that I don't know how should they get animated....but this 3d style was not at all a solution to it...
True, I wish some big studio would put a team together that actually loves Berserk and produce it with the respect it deserves, with a good budget. Studio 4°C treated it as best as they could with the movies and had plans to actually continue further than the Golden Age Arc but Young Animal acted like a piece of crap and gave it to Gemba a few years later. And thus we got the horrible 2016 version instead...

Afro Shinobi berserk is hard to draw and animate especially in a small time span but it doesn't seem like people care enough(even tho they do) if you look up the Gantz 0 movie you can tell berserk can get a faithful adaption given alot of time and actual care
@Collins Ongaya I still think the point stands that Berserk has so much detail and hard work behind it that anyone trying to adapt it needs to put the same amount of effort into it instead of the rushed hack-job we got. Not dissing Parasyte, because I love it, I think it's better Tokyo Ghoul, but that manga was just easier to adapt to a modern anime
It may be my optimism, but I don't think Berserk is unadaptable. Would it be as visually stunning as the manga? Likely not, but nailing its pacing, animation, direction, characters, and themes (and for an nOn-GoLdEN aGE aRC) can easily compensate for not having Miura's SSS rank art imho. As it stands, Berserk fell into the wrong hands with this. While your reasons regarding why the anime's a mess are sound, I must disagree cuz I'm certain that this was the result of a shit sacrifice to the God Hand... Jeeeez, and I thought Skull Knight royally messed up.
yeah but wwhat if uotable adapted berserk you know the studio that made fate zero it s visually stuning and beautiful and it will capture the beauty of berserk as wel as pacing and characater perfecctly
@@lordmoncef5494 it would be a master piece from an animation stand point but i feel ufotable might simplify the characters too much kinda like what they did to shiro in UBW
It would've made more sense if every episode lasted from 40 to 60 minutes, like Hellsing Ultimate. I say that because Berserk sometimes gives us long philosophical conversations that wouldn't fit well into a 20 min episode but are also too good to be cut out.
30 years ago, Akira set the standard for high-quality animation with its then-meager 10 million dollar budget. The whole thing was drawn with painstaking effort that is clearly visible in every single frame; the sheer attention to detail is on par with Kentaro Miura's work ethic -- when he actually is working, that is...that lazy bastard. Fast-forward to this and one thing is for certain: Anime's haven't gotten more expensive to make; people have gotten cheaper and lazier.
deadlines have gotten shorter and artists are demanding more pay. You have to remember back in Akira days anime artists really did not get paid enough for their work. Heck they are still not paid enough. But as the pay for that kind of animation goes up, the producers will want less and less of it since CGI is so much cheaper than hand-animation. But remember CGI isn't the problem, BAD CGI is. There are several netflix originals that a exclusively CGI and honestly they look fine. But really if a studio is going to do and anime in CGI they need to commit to it, not do some hand-animation and some CGI because that always looks terrible.
i will never understand why they take some of the most popular manga on the planet and gives it to some unknown director that doesnt know how to properly animate
I pray we will get the anime we deserve. So many people yet to discover how great this manga is. I believe somone who loves this manga will come along and give it the proper respect and time it deserves.
@@Hi-xr6dt Animation is hella good and sound design is TOP NOTCH! It has a very deep story, but you have to get through the first season until you REALLY start getting into the deep stuff. But you get to the really fun to watch parts after just 5 or so episodes. It’s also very ecchi sometimes cuz it’s made by the author of Soul Eater, Atsushi Okubo. Pretty much if you’ve seen Soul Eater, imagine if Blare the Cat was a main character.
Honestly one of my top stories, immediately made me want to read the manga after the first season, and right now in the manga, OH BOY! I would definitely it’s say one of the hypest stories going on right now.
Its exactly like the video describes the 2016 show. If you have never read the manga or watched the movies, you would think that Guts is just an edgy asshole, who goes around killing people, trying to find casca. And the only thing he cares about is to slash down everything til he gets there, while this is the exact opposite of guts character.
1997 animation and soundtrack blew me away. Watched 2016 to find out what happened after, got a gun and now im a ghost. Thats right i am a ghost writing this comment out if resentment for the atrocity.
You know how else this Berserk adaptation sucks? It nearly turned me away from Berserk. My first exposure to the series was the “Nightmare Vs. Guts” Death Battle video, I didn’t entirely care too much because I assumed it was just one of the 80,000 anime stories I’ve heard of before that are all pretty much the exact same thing with different characters, and the cliche anime garbage intro made my indifference to the series even worse. I didn’t know or care about the series or how popular it was, and I was unaware of how influential it was (what’s weird is that I used to think people loved it because of the new CGI, even though looking back, I probably never heard anyone say anything like that) As for its influence, I didn’t know all about stuff like Dark Souls, but it did look cool (I didn’t own it until pretty recently). What I also didn’t know is the fact that Dark Souls is heavily influenced by Berserk, as well as many other dark fantasy stories I could be interested in. And then as if Void wanted to teach me what fate was before I even knew what he himself was, I found Guts’s theme from the OVA. I was looking around for some good music choices for a future video I wanted to make, and one of my recommendations was indeed that specific song. I went into it expecting an extremely intense death metal song, with how little about Guts that I knew (again, all of my knowledge of Guts at the time came solely from the Death Battle video and from what little of the 2016 anime I saw) and I was surprised by what I heard, a gentle piano tune, an unusual rippling sound echoing in the background, and two soft-voiced singers. “This is the theme song of the same guy that viciously crushes people with a man-sized sword?” I expected it to kick off in a sudden fashion, like exploding into a vicious electric guitar riff or something, and it just didn’t. Then I found another video as a suggestion, “Everytime they play Guts’s theme”. Checked it out, and was again surprised by what I saw, Guts wasn’t the cruel anti-hero I used to think he was, he was human, he had more emotions than just anger, he wasn’t just a bloodthirsty maniac with a giant sword like so many other characters from anime shows and fantasy games I don’t care about, and I couldn’t even categorize him as a character archetype because he has so much going for him than just what the 2016 show’s adaptation told me he does. So yeah, the 2016 adaptation almost caused me to miss out on Berserk as a whole, and I’m glad that UA-cam’s algorithm actually gave me something worthwhile. Hell, one of my latest videos on my channel (at the time of this comment) is an instrumental remix of ‘Forces’ I made with Auxy Music Studio. But seriously, when an adaptation nearly turns away a new viewer and a potential fan because that adaptation of the original story is so poorly done, you know that something is beyond wrong.
I'll be honest, this show actually raised my Interest for Berserk(came from the Death Battle video too), and I originally thought the show was fairly good then, and then saw the 1997 OVA which I felt was pretty good as well. But now that I rewatch parts of the 2017 Berserk....yeah it's very bad in animation.
These should have been high-budget movies like the last trilogy. If it's this or nothing, I'd rather have nothing in order to preserve the magic of the manga. Honestly. Waste of potential.
i don't even the 97 one is way toned down in terms of violence and has some really shitty animation. But it’s well directed with great artwork and brilliant composition.
Riley Jones it's a TV show, you just can't show some stuff on TV. Yeah, the animation was limited, but if the director knows what he's doing, it's instantly great.
Crappy HR Yeah that was back in 1997 I think the bar was a bit lower (higher?) in terms of showable violence. (I could be talking out of my ass though so don’t take that as fact). It was also all hand drawn. Even to the back grounds, the fights etc. which... if you think about it, especially back in ‘97, is pretty impressive.
They literally could've just used the greatsword sound from darksouls, or any greatsword/ultra-greatsword from the souls series, hell even great hammers would be passabel!
Due to Made In Abyss's existence as an anime and the raw detail, emotion, and appeal it pulls off, I'm 100% certain Berserk can be adapted well. Some of the pages in the manga of MiA rival or flat-out blows Berserk's out of the water, and they went and added even more detail into the anime. Cuz why not I guess. Really need someone competent handling such a legendary series.
I love Made In Abyss and it's manga, definitely one of my all time favorite worlds, but saying the manga's art rivals or god-forbid blow's Berserk's art out of water is a fucking absurd statement. I went back to look at the art as I own manga copies of both, and as good as Made in Abyss's art looks, it can't even fucking compare. It never once had art good enough to rival Berserk, let alone be better.
Bro, I immediately thought of you and this video, after hearing the sad news about Miura sensei's passing. I believe you are one of the greatest fans of his work. I sincerely hope for you to make a tribute video where you share the impact of Berserk on Mordern Fantasy and show how special is Miura sensei's Master craftsmanship. RIP Miura. A legend!
If Berserk ever got a faithful anime adaptation that could somehow capture the artistic detail that Miura put into the manga then it would easily be the best Anime of all time.
If this is the direction the channel is going, that being more broad anime related videos, i'm all in. Your way of speaking and editing is a bit like Demo and I can get behind that, keep up the good work man!
Christian Hanson I didn’t make the connection at first but you are 1000% right. He reminds me so much of demo in this video in particular it’s ridiculous. The way they talk, edit, the humor, and even the fact that they both seem like pretty big berserk fans. It explains so much...
Panning can be used well in some cases. Like in Houseki No Kuni which is still the most beautiful anime I have ever seen and it was done entirely in CG.
Nah man thats just artistic choice to have a mirrored image. It symbolizes jaCk SHIT WTF DID THEY DO! IVE ONLY WATCHED THE 90's Berserk ANIME and Ive also read the manga. I considered watching 2016 and 2017 but holy shit after watching this, id much rather learn to animate and try to do berserk justice for my own personal viewing experience than suffer through this shitshow
So I watched the original anime and I liked it. Then I saw they remade it in 2016 and I was so disgusted that I didn’t want to read the manga. But after seeing this video im going to read it now.
I like to imagine an alternate universe where Madhouse picked up this series and gave it the Hellsing Ultimate treatment. They still haven't reached the Conviction arc, but they're getting there. Eventually. In like 15 years or so.
I didn't like Hellsing Ultimate. Looked so messy and unrealistic in a non-stylish way. Also I hated every chibi gag scene. Also, this isn't about how it looks but the story fucking sucked man. The Nazis are the worst part of the show. The author clearly doesn't know how to handle the OP main character. He let him kill everybody then haxed him out of the series for 30 years then brought him back.
Animation-wise Hellsing Ultimate is amazing, but the dialogue is mostly a pile of garbage. But don't take my word for it, just watch it again and count how many boring-ass speeches are made, specially in the latter episodes.
@@DeMoraJS it's quite simple: watch hellsing ultimate abridged, it still have the good parts of the show and have actually good dialogue, even when they aren't trying to do comedy.

The JoJo anime perfectly captures the spirit and tone of the manga. If anyone eventually pulls that off with Berserk, it will be amazing. Just fantastic. Chainsaw Man is another example of adapting the Manga in a very effective way, despite it just coming out a few years ago. I wish we could get even a mediocre Berserk that covers all the arc

the 1997 is good just the 2016
@Urn Turn I feel that the story's strength comes from both its artistic display as well as the way it delivers the story.

Its lazy
i think there's only one part that would be better in 3d and that's the eclipse. those panoramic shots i think are really necessary to get the full scope of the dimension of abstract time. other than that i think the rest should be 2d because it's really needed to show the facial expressions and emotions of characters, something Miura painstakingly spent the most of his time perfecting.
If mappa animated dis shit it would be S tier

Think of all the misery we could have been spared!

deadlines have gotten shorter and artists are demanding more pay.

I didn’t know or care about the series or how popular it was, and I was unaware of how influential it was (what’s weird is that I used to think people loved it because of the new CGI, even though looking back, I probably never heard anyone say anything like that)
As for its influence, I didn’t know all about stuff like Dark Souls, but it did look cool (I didn’t own it until pretty recently).
But seriously, when an adaptation nearly turns away a new viewer and a potential fan because that adaptation of the original story is so poorly done, you know that something is beyond wrong.
this comment is longer than my expected life span
I'll be honest, this show actually raised my Interest for Berserk(came from the Death Battle video too), and I originally thought the show was fairly good then, and then saw the 1997 OVA which I felt was pretty good as well.
But now that I rewatch parts of the 2017 Berserk....yeah it's very bad in animation.
These should have been high-budget movies like the last trilogy. If it's this or nothing, I'd rather have nothing in order to preserve the magic of the manga. Honestly. Waste of potential.
The first adaptation was the best. It was THE Berserk. The music, the tone, the amount of violence - EVERYTHING about it was Berserk.
i don't even the 97 one is way toned down in terms of violence and has some really shitty animation.
The 90s one looked gorgeous in my opinion. I really fucking love that old school "Fist of the North Star" look
They literally could've just used the greatsword sound from darksouls, or any greatsword/ultra-greatsword from the souls series, hell even great hammers would be passabel!
10:58 is actually real when I try making something late at night without my parents knowing
Maybe Guts can fight against destiny, but not with a bad adaptation.
Berserk 2016 is the definition of " Look what they did to my boy"
Bro, I immediately thought of you and this video, after hearing the sad news about Miura sensei's passing. I believe you are one of the greatest fans of his work. I sincerely hope for you to make a tribute video where you share the impact of Berserk on Mordern Fantasy and show how special is Miura sensei's Master craftsmanship. RIP Miura. A legend!
whats sadder to me is that to honor Miura, Crunchyroll chose to use a clip from THIS show, this awful bastardization of Miuras life work, to honor him
@@corvuscolbrand its the only berserk related thing they have the rights to, but I agree they prob would've been better showing nothing at all
It’s like Demo has come back
Berserk 2016 is the “animated by Queen Bee” of the normal anime world
Naaaaaaaahhhhh you didn't
If Berserk ever got a faithful anime adaptation that could somehow capture the artistic detail that Miura put into the manga then it would easily be the best Anime of all time.
Honestly, once Mappa is finished with Chainsaw Man and AOT they should handle Berserk. They're really good with serious and dramatic character arcs.
Who's demo? I'd like to see more content like this
Majin Fies he’s God incarnate
Christian Hanson Demo would be proud
Anime using CG
Use PAN
Use PAAAANNNN
USE PPPPPAAAAANNNNNN
Panning can be used well in some cases. Like in Houseki No Kuni which is still the most beautiful anime I have ever seen and it was done entirely in CG.
they use panning for sound effects too
" nothing personal, kid." is so accurate its unbelievable
25:15 d-did they just forget which eye guts lost???
Nah man thats just artistic choice to have a mirrored image. It symbolizes jaCk SHIT WTF DID THEY DO! IVE ONLY WATCHED THE 90's Berserk ANIME and Ive also read the manga. I considered watching 2016 and 2017 but holy shit after watching this, id much rather learn to animate and try to do berserk justice for my own personal viewing experience than suffer through this shitshow
idk wtf you were expecting at this point lmao
And people think that this was better animated than Goblin Slayer
At least goblin slayer is an actual good anime other than this monstrosity
@@parafaust6201 is it? first episodes felt like a teenager's power trip
@@Willie6785 well yes the first episode is questionable but the rest is pretty good
So I watched the original anime and I liked it. Then I saw they remade it in 2016 and I was so disgusted that I didn’t want to read the manga. But after seeing this video im going to read it now.
the mangas' art is amazing, absolutely worth it
Mark the Matey fucking do it
The manga is absolutely awesome, one of the best ever created really.
It's soooooo worth it
The best way I've found to watch it is to turn your monitor to black and white and have no audio
I like to imagine an alternate universe where Madhouse picked up this series and gave it the Hellsing Ultimate treatment. They still haven't reached the Conviction arc, but they're getting there. Eventually. In like 15 years or so.
Nell Morales knowing MadHouse they would probably do 2 seasons and move on to something else
@@DeMoraJS it's quite simple:
watch hellsing ultimate abridged, it still have the good parts of the show and have actually good dialogue, even when they aren't trying to do comedy.
@@Miguel-iu1rr BRO! I love Hellsing Abridged for exactly those reasons. And the cannons. Bitches love cannons.
Smart idea on your part diversifying your content earlier on. Don't get me wrong I enjoy your yugioh content but there is limited growth in only sticking to that niche. I look forward to seeing what you produce in the future.
Why the hell did they feel it was a good idea to make the sword clanging sound like a fucking Sailor Moon transformation??
Sounds like they hired a six-year-old to make the sound effects, and gave them some pots and pans
Sakura Stardust not enough budget after the shitty computer animation fighting scenes
Getting into the Berserk Anime and the 1997 Anime is the PERFECT gateway into this series.
