The problem is they didn't adapt the story, they adapted bits and pieces of it in a disconnected fashion with lots of plot and character development completely removed.
Exactly, it’s strung together like bad Christmas lights. Technically it’s fairly accurate to the source material but it lacks any and all emotional impact. Without that you don’t have Berserk.
That’s called adapting the story. Keeping things in will destroy the pacing of the anime. You have to cut things out because pacing in manga is so much different than film pacing.

But we weren’t promised a complete adaptation of Berserk’s golden age arc, we were promised a higher quality version of the golden age trilogy with new stuff like the bonfire of dreams scene and some new soundtracks. I don’t mean any offense but I don’t know why this has to be explained to some people because it it was really obvious just by seeing the trailers for this.
@@thomasffrench3639 which is why animes adaptations will fail every single time. Even the 97 anime failed. You can't adapt Miuras work any other way than what Miura has done. He structured Berserk exactly how he wanted the story to work. Deviating from it will lessen not only the story itself, but the characters too in turn. Making your adaptation mediocre. Even if the art was great. The story will forever be butchered into a place you cannot recover.
I think it's a bit of a cash grab sure, but it's also a sort of re-audition I think. Or more of a testing the waters to see if an anime is viable perhaps.
The Berserk franchise doesn't make much money to be honest. You can't really say it's the same. The very first reason we are not getting a lot of new content and 2d animated scenes is because there's not enough money.

People really need to stop shiting on the CGI of the movies, it's a better one that most CGI we have in the Anime world today. The bonfire of dreams was entirely CGI because it was an ADDED SCENE, they didn't have enough time (or maybe money) to put real quality 2d drawings, and it yet looks amazing. If you guys hope for a full 2d berserk anime, then just go and play video games or read books, just.... Please leave Anime world because it seems you guys can't understand something actually simple : a full 2d berserk, with all those creatures and all, will never exist, not because it's impossible, but because it would ask the animation studio in charge to be composed of people with Miura's talent, and it's impossible (in terms of time, money, material etc...) If the countdown means the upcoming of a new adaptation by 4C, I'll take it because, and that only is my opinion, they're the best studio to animate berserk. The sound design, the general quality, the scenery, the art, the musics, everything is good, and it looks to me like it's THE official berserk anime. Now if you guys don't like it, I can totally understand, but rejecting it because "there's CGI" is like asking for an artist to stop using paper to draw, it makes no sense. If we ever have a new anime (and nothing proves it), it will anyway never be worse than what Liden Films delivered six years ago. Just enjoy the Berserk universe damn.
A full 2d berserk is in fact impossible unless we find the cure for death and a bunch of people who are willing to dedicate the next 50 years to animating it. unless you are willing for the characters to go significantly off model from the manga with 90% less detail.
For real, at this point, we need a Berserk fan/s rich enough to afford & make a deal of proper quality anime production project. Basically same thing with Vampire Hunter D. Although at least VHD has lengthier & better anime show with a very special anime movie. It is so weird too since Dark Fantasy genre works is all the rage popular right now, probably in the golden age era.
I've said for ages now that if I ever win the lottery I am hiring the best animation team money can buy and fully funding a faithful Berserk adaptation, take as much time and money as you want I don't even care if I'm dead by the time its finished so long as the world can experience a PROPER Berserk anime.

The very worst part of this anime is the name, Memorial Edition. Is this supposed to honor Miura's memory? With all it's cut content, barely tweaked animation from 10 years ago, badly paced adaptation. That is the most offensive part of all of this.

I really love Miura San work, And confess I feel bad with all the rants and the poisonous toxic arbitrary criticism within the scene. I think these movies are beautiful and deserve more credit.

The biggest problem with Berserk: The Golden Age Arc: Memorial Edition is that Studio 4°C told you exactly what they were going to do with this Memorial Edition and yet you were still disappointed by it.
Well the CEO literally watched your video. The missing piece of Guts' backstory did get adapted, sort of, and in 2D mostly. Argably not the same as adapting the childhood chapters per se but "that" is not subjective anymore like in previous adaptations, they've shown it in explicit imagery and descriptive dialogue in _that_ other scene it gets mentioned, which is much more than I ever expected to see the light of the day.
I feel like the worst thing about studios butchering the Berserk anime adaptations over and over again is that casual watchers are getting tired of the golden age arc even tho it's arguably the best arc in all of Berserk. But to this day, we haven't gotten a faithful adaptation of said arc... We really need an adaptation that actually adapts everything and starts off with the black swordsman arc.
Memorial edition is good and i love how they corrected the CG models a bit, but still i wouldve loved if they went all out on this and made all the things missing from the movies to this like for example Guts' backstory, Zodd throwing his blade to Guts and for the future adding the Guts vs Wyald scene, but still i think its as he said too costly and so wont happen.
honestly the most offensive thing about the movie trilogy is how much they either skipped or glossed over. Guts backstory and the queen even if the animation wasn't that great if they accurately captured the essence of the manga I would be happy.
the ironic thing is.. I just watched episode 6 and this adaptation just does not work as a series. It had pretty good pacing as a movie. Even though a lot was skipped, it still sort of worked and felt like a movie. The pacing is weird with the Memorial Edition.
I think this fascination with CGI in Japan is either partly due to western influence, or wholly a trend thing. The Japanese just can’t do 3DCG, I genuinely think, when it comes to seasonal anime schlock, they should just stop trying. The anime industry is basically the opposite of Hollywood, wherein you’ve got tons of smaller studios that constantly work to churn out content. These studios aren’t Capcom or Square Enix, they don’t have the budget to pour into 3D animation, so it always ends up looking stiff and lifeless. 3D is also cheaper, since you don’t need people to constantly draw frame after frame of animation, so I’m sure that’s an incentive of it as well. I don’t even follow anime, but I believe that 3D will never catch on as a genuine medium in Japan, it just lacks so much artistry and technique. The best I’ve seen it used is for well hidden animation shortcuts like in Kill la Kill, and even then, I think they should quit that too, or else you run the risk of looking less like Kill la Kill and more like the robots in Stand Alone Complex
@@scring713 3d is not cheap, just less time consuming. It's possible to make it good and many studios have proven it so many times like Graphinica(mostly cgi mechas) or Orange which you probably have heard many people mentioned already. Surely it's not the same as the video game industry but it's still something that can stand on it's own, people still willing to pour their time and sweat into it. The upcoming Slam Dunk movie might be another step towards what they've been aiming for.
No bigger fan of the manga than me. But I will disagree with the majority of the comments and state that I love the memorial edition. You can't exactly complain about the golden age movies or memorial edition for this or that little animation issue and hold up the 97 series as the best, when the animation was bottom rung in that show. I agree with people who say the 2016 series was trash.
the movies are better. they just had better pacing. I do like the bonfire scene though. if they put that back into a cut of the movies that would be ideal.
I loved the movies, specially reguarding the superb directing treatment given to the most important scenes(like when Griffith invades Charlotes room, or the whole eclipse sequences). The memorial edition is for me a very good excuse to rewatch this amazing adaptation. But, when it comes to the whole debate about CGI, I just accepted that if we are gona have a new adaptation, it's gonna be a full CG anime again. Studio orange is the only studio managing to make great animation using the technique, but if Dorohedoro taught me something, is that CGI can be very enjoyable when you have good character models and proper cell shading with good outline work. And the campfire of dreams scene gave me just that. So, yeah, I'm quite optimistic about it.
@CW The CGI is 10x worse. Clang. The models look like someone shit them out. It's fight scenes are out done by the PS2 game. The movies at least had their moments with Guts after the eclipse, the dream speech, and the guitar in hundred man slayer. 2016-2017 only had its soundtrack going for them which the movies also had as well
@CW 1. I find saying that 2016-17 “follows closely the source material” while the Movies/Memorial Edition is a “complete disgrace” highly dissagreeable. Berserk 2016 covered the Black Swordsman Arc (8 chapters, that however are about 3x longer than the regular chapters) and the Convicion Arc (81 chapters) in only 12 episodes. They completely butchered the Blackswordsman Arc and cut down Conviction a lot (like they completely skipped the Lost Children Chapters, doesn’t sound like a faithfull adaptation to me). Sure, Memorial skips a lot too, but I feel like the things they left out weren’t that bad (this is subjective tho) 2. No way visuals don’t matter. Some comedy or slice of life might not suffer from bad art/animation, but Berserk tells a very dark and mature story. Some of the more important scenes wouldn’t ever hit as hard, if it weren’t for Miuras godly art and looked like it was “drawn by a drunk ape” (quote from Gigguk). Having a good story to tell is the reason we are reading/watching it, but good art/animaton is the reason we don’t stop reading/watching it. Why do you think something like Demon Slayer is so popular? Is it becouse of the “fine” story, or the absolutely breathtaking animation? Yes, Memorial Edition isn’t perfect, the cut content sucks and the CGI can look kinda meh at times, but it still has a very strong direction and even the animation has it’s moments to shine, something that couldn’t be said about Berserk 2016-17 . . .
@CW I totally desagree with you(not just reguarding the movie vs anime discution). Not just by beign a hardcore berserk fan, but as an animator and cinema student too. The movies have a very solid structure in my opinion, even though they had to exclude a lot of content. The 2016 and 2017 are just a trainwreck from beggining to end specially because of the poor pasing and direction. But I'm not arrogant as you guys to stablish these things as the absolute truth. It's just my opinion, and I'm sorry that you felt that way with the movies.
This gave me a better perspective. Hopefully, it is an extra thing, like a movie or an anime.. bc, my reasoning behind it was that I thought they went very cheap on the memorial edition and the reason on why they even published it to begin with was because they already allocated all of the budget for a newer and bigger project.

Plus, what's dumb is thinking releasing something half-baked is anything close to a good lead up to the "big budget" project. I don't think we'll be treated well or right when it comes to a new GOOD anime adaption of Berserk. I would LOVE to be wrong, but yehhhh... I really don’t like how 4C animate some of the characters, especially Guts. Guts in the movies does not look like manga Guts, I like to call him Nuts. Plus there’s the excessive cgi and pacing that puts me off, the 97 anime is the best current adaptation by far. Captures the essence of the golden age very well
yeah my problem is that it doesn't have enough of the Deep Characters moments and Slow paced scenes of the 97 Adaptation and the Switch back and Forth between 2D and 3D and lack of consistency of the Quality of the Models
Berserk has quite literally almost zero filler ESPECIALLY in Golden Age aside from some drawn out battle sequences which still provide development. Adaptations consistently opting to remove elements and character beats mystifies me, Berserk is better when there is more of it GIVE US THE MORE who the fuck do they make these for? Fans? By cutting out content we love? New comers? Who get a watered down, less developed version of the story? ITS ALL ALREADY STORY BOARDED AND WRITTEN FOR YOU, it makes me feel like a fucking crazy person to see adaptations drop the ball so hard when the solution is staring them right in the face which is to just faithfully adapt a story that is literally already completed for you.
The main problem is still skipping important parts for either time purposes or because it’s too graphic and the English dub still isnt here hopefully it comes soon, those are the only negative things I can say about it at moment, they can still redeem themselves in later episodes with bakiraka and wyald but doubt that’ll happen
I don't understand the point of rereleasing the Golden Age *again* just to do a poor job of adding one additional scene, only with minor unnecessary changes. It just makes me feel less optimistic that they will ever do it justice. I wonder if the people producing this even like story of Berserk in the first place or care about what the quality of are their creative profession. Semi-professionsl/amateur animators do a better job because they love what they do. What's their excuse?
This unabashed love for the 97 adaptation is strange for me because everyone always seems to look past the fact that B97 made an egregious offense in leaving out Skull Knight who is an EXTREMELY important character. Guts and Casca never would have made it out of the eclipse if he had not been there
I might be one of the few people that enjoyed the movies and the anime a bit, although the anime's cgi was pretty bad. I hope they either remake the anime with better animation 'cause the story is really interesting. I want to also point out that I'm not a manga reader, just a casul anime watcher so to me the anime just looks pretty bad with that cgi. Still though, I liked the story but I don't know if the story was adapted correctly so my opinion pretty much doesn't matter😅
I personally think the memorial edition is garbage. I watched the egg of the king movies and wanted to again. Only to find out it was removed in exchange for the memorial edition. Just counting the minutes and I could see they took out a lot Watching it was like watching the new hunger games movie. Speed runs the story and things happen so so so so so fast. Cutting out so much that you literally get 2-3 small scenes of Juno before he dies, and 0 for many characters before the eclipse comes. Removing so much characterization and time from the characters that it takes the impact from those character dying away I showed my girlfriend the movies instead as her introduction and she LOVED IT. Primarily all those character moments that were cut. She wouldn’t have cried during the eclipse in the memorial version because she wouldn’t have known or bonded with these characters before they died. They made it look cooler, sure, but they added feathers to pounds they took out On your note about the music video, they show the clips so fast that my girlfriend didn’t understand anything and even asked if all this was stuff that happened after the end of the show because it was so different than what we were watching Also, the 97’ being done cheaply has been long disproven. No, the animation style wasn’t because of a lack of funding. People assumed and it stuck but the numbers are public
the 1997 one got it mostly correct. This just skipped practically all the important build up and even the action scenes felt less important and impactful because of it. Sadly its the only one you can find on streaming services too meaning people who don't want to invest money in the blu ray or dvd of the 97 anime or people who don't like the old animation style (lots of still frames etc) will go to this one and think that berserk is a joke compared to how people talk about it. not only was the 2016 version poorly animated but also butchered stories
I can get pass the CG, but not how disjointed the story turned out. Also making SK appear is not enough to make up for the lack of characterization of the BoTH, none of the lesser band members got enough screentime. The reason why the Golden Age is considered by many to be the best arc is because of said characterization, you end up caring about those characters so much even though by all accounts they are minor characters compared to the 3 main ones. Which is what makes the Eclipse so gut wrenching... You know your adaptation is bad when you fail to portray the core elements accurately.
I honestly hope they make a anime and redo the Black swordsman arc like they have planned after the movies because their was test footage of it and it looked good. I personally like this type of cgi and read a good chunk of the manga, i just cant sit down to read it all because id rather watch it
I honestly find terribly sad that people reject the memorial edition (and the movies) just because of the CGI. This adaptation has some of the most beautiful drawn animated scenes Berserk ever had. Of course it won't have every plot point the manga has because there's not enough money for it. And for those saying the memorial edition is jut to "grab some money", that's kind of the purpose of this medium. Not to mention we never really had more Berserk by studio 4C because the movies were a failure and didn't make much money. Anime doesn't just exist because a bunch of fans who, in many cases, doesn't even watch the anime in legal sites, want a perfect adaptation, which, let's be honest, will never happen only because everyone has a different taste. Anyways, I'm loving the memorial edition and I think the CGI is far better from the one they used in the original movies and the 2016 anime. They just need to improve the animation and clothes details, other than that it works really well. The 2016 is bad not just for the CGI, Berserk is not just about a guy slashing monsters with "edgy" generic metal music in the background. The golden age movies and memorial edition got that right, and give the characters their moments to develop, not to mention the direction is really good in very scenes.

@@ZkoyllarTube Sure, Forces is more serious and fitting for Berserk and its setting, but I can‘t deny that Tell me Why is an extremely catchy tune regardless of how unfitting it is. It‘s unique in its own way and also more enjoyable to the west with the english lyrics. So it depends individually. Ps: I checked out your UA-cam channel and I‘m really impressed with your drawings! The way you color and shade is really smooth and detailed which makes your drawings really nice to look at. I draw digitally for 3 years now and am still learning :) Keep it up
I was introduced to Berserk formally nearly a decade ago when the first film released and I was hooked. I watched all 3 and enjoyed all 3. I had no idea there was a 90s anime and I hadn’t yet read the manga. I am a fan of different art mediums and to a degree I understand the nuances of those mediums. This is not to critique the review as all valid points about the story are made. This is more to do with the idea of idolizing sometimes something so much because it is masterfully executed that expectations exceed reason. Can a Berserk anime that is worthy enough to stand in the wide shadow of Miuras work come to fruition ? Yes. Can a Berserk anime that exceeds or lives up to his work come to fruition? No. There are just certain things that will not make the cutting room floor for a myriad of reasons and things that will get changed a certain way or added for a myriad of reasons and it will never be what everyone hopes it can be. The movies are flawed yes but they are good & in my opinion they get a bad rap for no reason. They are a good entry for someone who’s never heard of berserk rather to get into it and then go back and watch a nearly 30 year old anime and read a masterfully done series of literary art.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Berserk *is* unadaptable for its entirety. Certain arcs, such as Lost Children, Guts's childhood, Wyald, etc. cannot be edited down without diminishing the effect of the events surrounding them, to say nothing of how bad it is to outright remove them. With that said, the original anime is as good as an adaptation for television could ever hope to be, given the constraints. If I were to become an ultra, mega-millionare (or even more than that), I'd personally see to the production of an anime and give that shit away for free, with the unfiltered story fully intact. I'd do it all out of pocket. Everything. The planet, with all its anime-only simps, *needs* this story to reach them. Even if they're too much of a gaf to read the damn manga. I'm a merciful soul like that.
They are using fully CGI models but they are touching up the faces using 2d, that definitely means it's costing less money to create. At least the CGI is trying to emulate the 2d look so it's definitely an improvement from the 2016 anime.
I dont have a big problem about cgi in the show , they someone made it look good (artwise), but the main problem i have with it , is how fast everything happens

I don't know much about the studio making the Berserk animes but it seems like money isn't really the only issue here. The studio has experience making CG animations, not hand drawn animations. To get a 2D Berserk anime, you'd just essentially have to fire the existing team and hire a new one. That would kind of suck for the animators. But it is also what I think it would take to get a better adaptation. And a lot more money and time as well of course. Personally, I'm content with the manga, I don't need there to be an anime in the style I prefer, the team can make what they want with the means they have and I'll be fine with it :)
Bro, why the hell do they keep associating CGI with Berserk💀 we don’t want that! Like is it that hard for these studios to realize that we just want a faithful 2D animated Berserk adaptation… They have a gold mine which is the Berserk manga but choose to be hella cheap with it. So annoying who ever holds the rights or whatever to animate berserk needs to give it up to someone else that’ll give Berserk the love and actual money to make a proper NON CGI anime
I'm not the type to complain about this usually, but man... they sure made Casca white/sickly yellow in the CGI movies. Her skin tone in the waterfall scene was genuinely like a sickly yellow color, really spoiled the mood. Potentially the fault of the CGI, but the 2016 show did the same thing.
Berserk sadly is only really good as Manga. The Movies looked fine to me but the new Anime.... horrible! Just draw the shit like back with the first Anime for fuck sake! Now seeing the Movie Parts again here, I really do see the CGI tho lol not good xD
I don't think full Berserk story without cgi is possible because the character designs are so complex, plus, it would cost the studio way more initially to produce cgi show instead of going full 2D.

Honestly all the 2D stuff in this show looks pretty fantastic, but the 3D is just really jarring and and mediocre. The story itself is also pretty weirdly adapted
The biggest problem with Memorial Edition is that it's objectively the best adaptation of the Golden Age Arc and the weeb nostalgy induced community can't accept that fact. I watched this first because of a friend and I owe him for that, the other versions are absolute garbage. Also this shows that it's possible to make Berzerk with this kind of CGI and look really really good.
The fact that no1 did yet a proper anime adaptation of this manga is beyon belief... it's the best manga story ever written nothing comes even close to the genius mind of Kentaro Miura
My thoughts on the memorial edition? Missed again. I love berserk, don’t mind memorial edition, but I cry knowing that people will watch this and not feel the same sense of grotesque wonder that I got in the 97 anime. Sure, skull knight is here, but we need an amalgamation of all three styles. The expansive story of 97, skull knight from beyond, and maybe just more dayum episodes. Sick of seeing golden age arc and conviction, I wanna see the REAL lost children arc lol
im fine with the usage of cgi to make the work easier when you have a giant creature or monster that is too much to draw in one position for 30 different shots but holy shit beserk 2016 should've been a fucking LESSON OF STIFFNESS BAD AND STOP CUTTING OUT STORIES PARTS AND PACING

Berserk 1967 in my opinion probably was the closest they’ve got, an I think it’s amazing then the new one they got, the old one u actually feel for guts and the characters but idk man that’s just me
I've said this about the standalone movies as well, but while they aren't a substitute for the manga (nothing will ever REALLY be) they are a decent companion piece if you've already read it or seen the 97 anime. I still have my hopes that a proper adaptation will grace us someday.
I promise you guys, I'll work without pause and rest, I'll become a millionare, and then I will give everything I have for a decent Berserk Anime Adaptation.
personally i dont think its too bad. i think like ive seen some say about it online if we all praise it, it may increas the chances of them investing more into it and us getting a proper adaptation. peronsally id say the studio that animated hellsing:ultimate to animate a proper beserk series
I honestly think studios should stop trying to adapt Berserk and we accept as fans that it is simply unadaptable with the current climate of the anime industry. A proper Berserk adaption would have to be one of the largest scoped animes ever made to do it justice and there just isn't a studio willing to do it and honestly probably justifiably so. If Berserk did have this amazing incredibly well animated and directed anime would it be profitable? The material and themes of Berserk don't lend themselves to wide spread appeal and perhaps studios are worried it simply wouldn't make money.
Eh, to me what we call "unadaptable" is some behind the scenes issue. Nothing convinces me the reason it goes wrong every time isn't exclusively because of businessmen. Not about possible profit, or production limits on their own, just people getting in the way of something greater.

For about 15 years people have been telling themselves it's too dark to be adapted, don't you think the climate changed in that time? Just look at what's popular nowadays. I can't speak for the japanese television side, but at that point if that's the issue they can take other measures like make it an ONA instead, or allowing interested parties to adapt the IP properly. Someone, in some side behind the scenes won't let the bone go, and can't nail the adaptation themselves. It's definitely human error and not some quality of the manga that is impossible to adapt, in current times.
A proper Berserk adaptation is something some auteur director would need to do, because releasing a hugely scoped adaptation with even the best, hand drawn art possible would just be a disappointment if it came out alongside all the other seasonal garbage. The typical anime conventions of writing and pacing and shot composition would have to be completely shafted in favor of someone with an actual vision and intention of not just making a Berserk adaptation, but a good one.
This is the problem . This berserk was amazing . In todays society this is the biggest problem . The Fans are never happy . Most of the probelem is outside of japan . The japanese love the cgi etc . With fans never happy why would a reliable studio take up the masterpiece of berserk so anime snobs a b and moan about a anime and not magna .

That’s called adapting the story. Keeping things in will destroy the pacing of the anime. You have to cut things out because pacing in manga is so much different than film pacing.

You can't adapt Miuras work any other way than what Miura has done. He structured Berserk exactly how he wanted the story to work. Deviating from it will lessen not only the story itself, but the characters too in turn. Making your adaptation mediocre. Even if the art was great. The story will forever be butchered into a place you cannot recover.
For real, when I heard about memorial edition, it immediately felt like a cash grab, almost in a cynical way, like the Star Wars special editions.

The Berserk franchise doesn't make much money to be honest. You can't really say it's the same. The very first reason we are not getting a lot of new content and 2d animated scenes is because there's not enough money.

People really need to stop shiting on the CGI of the movies, it's a better one that most CGI we have in the Anime world today. The bonfire of dreams was entirely CGI because it was an ADDED SCENE, they didn't have enough time (or maybe money) to put real quality 2d drawings, and it yet looks amazing.
If you guys hope for a full 2d berserk anime, then just go and play video games or read books, just.... Please leave Anime world because it seems you guys can't understand something actually simple : a full 2d berserk, with all those creatures and all, will never exist, not because it's impossible, but because it would ask the animation studio in charge to be composed of people with Miura's talent, and it's impossible (in terms of time, money, material etc...)
If the countdown means the upcoming of a new adaptation by 4C, I'll take it because, and that only is my opinion, they're the best studio to animate berserk. The sound design, the general quality, the scenery, the art, the musics, everything is good, and it looks to me like it's THE official berserk anime. Now if you guys don't like it, I can totally understand, but rejecting it because "there's CGI" is like asking for an artist to stop using paper to draw, it makes no sense.
If we ever have a new anime (and nothing proves it), it will anyway never be worse than what Liden Films delivered six years ago.

The very worst part of this anime is the name, Memorial Edition. Is this supposed to honor Miura's memory? With all it's cut content, barely tweaked animation from 10 years ago, badly paced adaptation. That is the most offensive part of all of this.

Well the CEO literally watched your video. The missing piece of Guts' backstory did get adapted, sort of, and in 2D mostly. Argably not the same as adapting the childhood chapters per se but "that" is not subjective anymore like in previous adaptations, they've shown it in explicit imagery and descriptive dialogue in _that_ other scene it gets mentioned, which is much more than I ever expected to see the light of the day.

Memorial edition is good and i love how they corrected the CG models a bit, but still i wouldve loved if they went all out on this and made all the things missing from the movies to this like for example Guts' backstory, Zodd throwing his blade to Guts and for the future adding the Guts vs Wyald scene, but still i think its as he said too costly and so wont happen.

honestly the most offensive thing about the movie trilogy is how much they either skipped or glossed over. Guts backstory and the queen even if the animation wasn't that great if they accurately captured the essence of the manga I would be happy.
the ironic thing is.. I just watched episode 6 and this adaptation just does not work as a series. It had pretty good pacing as a movie. Even though a lot was skipped, it still sort of worked and felt like a movie.

I'm positive it's a money issue. I don't think Japanese companies are willing to even approach the amount of spending US execs are.
I think this fascination with CGI in Japan is either partly due to western influence, or wholly a trend thing. The Japanese just can’t do 3DCG, I genuinely think, when it comes to seasonal anime schlock, they should just stop trying. The anime industry is basically the opposite of Hollywood, wherein you’ve got tons of smaller studios that constantly work to churn out content. These studios aren’t Capcom or Square Enix, they don’t have the budget to pour into 3D animation, so it always ends up looking stiff and lifeless. 3D is also cheaper, since you don’t need people to constantly draw frame after frame of animation, so I’m sure that’s an incentive of it as well. I don’t even follow anime, but I believe that 3D will never catch on as a genuine medium in Japan, it just lacks so much artistry and technique. The best I’ve seen it used is for well hidden animation shortcuts like in Kill la Kill, and even then, I think they should quit that too, or else you run the risk of looking less like Kill la Kill and more like the robots in Stand Alone Complex

It's possible to make it good and many studios have proven it so many times like Graphinica(mostly cgi mechas) or Orange which you probably have heard many people mentioned already. Surely it's not the same as the video game industry but it's still something that can stand on it's own, people still willing to pour their time and sweat into it. The upcoming Slam Dunk movie might be another step towards what they've been aiming for.

No bigger fan of the manga than me. But I will disagree with the majority of the comments and state that I love the memorial edition. You can't exactly complain about the golden age movies or memorial edition for this or that little animation issue and hold up the 97 series as the best, when the animation was bottom rung in that show. I agree with people who say the 2016 series was trash.

we got the first anime adaptation of donovan. automatically the best berserk anime version ever made so far.
I loved the movies, specially reguarding the superb directing treatment given to the most important scenes(like when Griffith invades Charlotes room, or the whole eclipse sequences). The memorial edition is for me a very good excuse to rewatch this amazing adaptation. But, when it comes to the whole debate about CGI, I just accepted that if we are gona have a new adaptation, it's gonna be a full CG anime again. Studio orange is the only studio managing to make great animation using the technique, but if Dorohedoro taught me something, is that CGI can be very enjoyable when you have good character models and proper cell shading with good outline work. And the campfire of dreams scene gave me just that. So, yeah, I'm quite optimistic about it.

The movies at least had their moments with Guts after the eclipse, the dream speech, and the guitar in hundred man slayer. 2016-2017 only had its soundtrack going for them which the movies also had as well

1. I find saying that 2016-17 “follows closely the source material” while the Movies/Memorial Edition is a “complete disgrace” highly dissagreeable. Berserk 2016 covered the Black Swordsman Arc (8 chapters, that however are about 3x longer than the regular chapters) and the Convicion Arc (81 chapters) in only 12 episodes. They completely butchered the Blackswordsman Arc and cut down Conviction a lot (like they completely skipped the Lost Children Chapters, doesn’t sound like a faithfull adaptation to me). Sure, Memorial skips a lot too, but I feel like the things they left out weren’t that bad (this is subjective tho)
2. No way visuals don’t matter. Some comedy or slice of life might not suffer from bad art/animation, but Berserk tells a very dark and mature story. Some of the more important scenes wouldn’t ever hit as hard, if it weren’t for Miuras godly art and looked like it was “drawn by a drunk ape” (quote from Gigguk). Having a good story to tell is the reason we are reading/watching it, but good art/animaton is the reason we don’t stop reading/watching it. Why do you think something like Demon Slayer is so popular? Is it becouse of the “fine” story, or the absolutely breathtaking animation?
Yes, Memorial Edition isn’t perfect, the cut content sucks and the CGI can look kinda meh at times, but it still has a very strong direction and even the animation has it’s moments to shine, something that couldn’t be said about Berserk 2016-17 . . .

The movies have a very solid structure in my opinion, even though they had to exclude a lot of content. The 2016 and 2017 are just a trainwreck from beggining to end specially because of the poor pasing and direction. But I'm not arrogant as you guys to stablish these things as the absolute truth. It's just my opinion, and I'm sorry that you felt that way with the movies.
This gave me a better perspective. Hopefully, it is an extra thing, like a movie or an anime.. bc, my reasoning behind it was that I thought they went very cheap on the memorial edition and the reason on why they even published it to begin with was because they already allocated all of the budget for a newer and bigger project.

I really don’t like how 4C animate some of the characters, especially Guts. Guts in the movies does not look like manga Guts, I like to call him Nuts. Plus there’s the excessive cgi and pacing that puts me off, the 97 anime is the best current adaptation by far. Captures the essence of the golden age very well
yeah my problem is that it doesn't have enough of the Deep Characters moments and Slow paced scenes of the 97 Adaptation and the Switch back and Forth between 2D and 3D and lack of consistency of the Quality of the Models
Berserk has quite literally almost zero filler ESPECIALLY in Golden Age aside from some drawn out battle sequences which still provide development. Adaptations consistently opting to remove elements and character beats mystifies me, Berserk is better when there is more of it GIVE US THE MORE who the fuck do they make these for? Fans? By cutting out content we love? New comers? Who get a watered down, less developed version of the story? ITS ALL ALREADY STORY BOARDED AND WRITTEN FOR YOU, it makes me feel like a fucking crazy person to see adaptations drop the ball so hard when the solution is staring them right in the face which is to just faithfully adapt a story that is literally already completed for you.

I don't understand the point of rereleasing the Golden Age *again* just to do a poor job of adding one additional scene, only with minor unnecessary changes. It just makes me feel less optimistic that they will ever do it justice. I wonder if the people producing this even like story of Berserk in the first place or care about what the quality of are their creative profession. Semi-professionsl/amateur animators do a better job because they love what they do. What's their excuse?
This unabashed love for the 97 adaptation is strange for me because everyone always seems to look past the fact that B97 made an egregious offense in leaving out Skull Knight who is an EXTREMELY important character. Guts and Casca never would have made it out of the eclipse if he had not been there

I might be one of the few people that enjoyed the movies and the anime a bit, although the anime's cgi was pretty bad. I hope they either remake the anime with better animation 'cause the story is really interesting. I want to also point out that I'm not a manga reader, just a casul anime watcher so to me the anime just looks pretty bad with that cgi. Still though, I liked the story but I don't know if the story was adapted correctly so my opinion pretty much doesn't matter😅
I personally think the memorial edition is garbage. I watched the egg of the king movies and wanted to again. Only to find out it was removed in exchange for the memorial edition. Just counting the minutes and I could see they took out a lot
Watching it was like watching the new hunger games movie. Speed runs the story and things happen so so so so so fast. Cutting out so much that you literally get 2-3 small scenes of Juno before he dies, and 0 for many characters before the eclipse comes. Removing so much characterization and time from the characters that it takes the impact from those character dying away
I showed my girlfriend the movies instead as her introduction and she LOVED IT. Primarily all those character moments that were cut. She wouldn’t have cried during the eclipse in the memorial version because she wouldn’t have known or bonded with these characters before they died. They made it look cooler, sure, but they added feathers to pounds they took out
On your note about the music video, they show the clips so fast that my girlfriend didn’t understand anything and even asked if all this was stuff that happened after the end of the show because it was so different than what we were watching

the 1997 one got it mostly correct. This just skipped practically all the important build up and even the action scenes felt less important and impactful because of it. Sadly its the only one you can find on streaming services too meaning people who don't want to invest money in the blu ray or dvd of the 97 anime or people who don't like the old animation style (lots of still frames etc) will go to this one and think that berserk is a joke compared to how people talk about it.

I can get pass the CG, but not how disjointed the story turned out. Also making SK appear is not enough to make up for the lack of characterization of the BoTH, none of the lesser band members got enough screentime. The reason why the Golden Age is considered by many to be the best arc is because of said characterization, you end up caring about those characters so much even though by all accounts they are minor characters compared to the 3 main ones. Which is what makes the Eclipse so gut wrenching...
You know your adaptation is bad when you fail to portray the core elements accurately.

I honestly find terribly sad that people reject the memorial edition (and the movies) just because of the CGI. This adaptation has some of the most beautiful drawn animated scenes Berserk ever had. Of course it won't have every plot point the manga has because there's not enough money for it. And for those saying the memorial edition is jut to "grab some money", that's kind of the purpose of this medium. Not to mention we never really had more Berserk by studio 4C because the movies were a failure and didn't make much money. Anime doesn't just exist because a bunch of fans who, in many cases, doesn't even watch the anime in legal sites, want a perfect adaptation, which, let's be honest, will never happen only because everyone has a different taste. Anyways, I'm loving the memorial edition and I think the CGI is far better from the one they used in the original movies and the 2016 anime. They just need to improve the animation and clothes details, other than that it works really well. The 2016 is bad not just for the CGI, Berserk is not just about a guy slashing monsters with "edgy" generic metal music in the background. The golden age movies and memorial edition got that right, and give the characters their moments to develop, not to mention the direction is really good in very scenes.

Sure, Forces is more serious and fitting for Berserk and its setting, but I can‘t deny that Tell me Why is an extremely catchy tune regardless of how unfitting it is. It‘s unique in its own way and also more enjoyable to the west with the english lyrics. So it depends individually.

I was introduced to Berserk formally nearly a decade ago when the first film released and I was hooked. I watched all 3 and enjoyed all 3. I had no idea there was a 90s anime and I hadn’t yet read the manga. I am a fan of different art mediums and to a degree I understand the nuances of those mediums. This is not to critique the review as all valid points about the story are made. This is more to do with the idea of idolizing sometimes something so much because it is masterfully executed that expectations exceed reason. Can a Berserk anime that is worthy enough to stand in the wide shadow of Miuras work come to fruition ? Yes. Can a Berserk anime that exceeds or lives up to his work come to fruition? No. There are just certain things that will not make the cutting room floor for a myriad of reasons and things that will get changed a certain way or added for a myriad of reasons and it will never be what everyone hopes it can be. The movies are flawed yes but they are good & in my opinion they get a bad rap for no reason. They are a good entry for someone who’s never heard of berserk rather to get into it and then go back and watch a nearly 30 year old anime and read a masterfully done series of literary art.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Berserk *is* unadaptable for its entirety.
Certain arcs, such as Lost Children, Guts's childhood, Wyald, etc. cannot be edited down without diminishing the effect of the events surrounding them, to say nothing of how bad it is to outright remove them.
With that said, the original anime is as good as an adaptation for television could ever hope to be, given the constraints. If I were to become an ultra, mega-millionare (or even more than that), I'd personally see to the production of an anime and give that shit away for free, with the unfiltered story fully intact. I'd do it all out of pocket. Everything. The planet, with all its anime-only simps, *needs* this story to reach them. Even if they're too much of a gaf to read the damn manga. I'm a merciful soul like that.

They are using fully CGI models but they are touching up the faces using 2d, that definitely means it's costing less money to create. At least the CGI is trying to emulate the 2d look so it's definitely an improvement from the 2016 anime.

Nothing much to say or add, just that I agree with all your points.
I don't know much about the studio making the Berserk animes but it seems like money isn't really the only issue here. The studio has experience making CG animations, not hand drawn animations. To get a 2D Berserk anime, you'd just essentially have to fire the existing team and hire a new one. That would kind of suck for the animators. But it is also what I think it would take to get a better adaptation. And a lot more money and time as well of course.
Personally, I'm content with the manga, I don't need there to be an anime in the style I prefer, the team can make what they want with the means they have and I'll be fine with it :)
Bro, why the hell do they keep associating CGI with Berserk💀 we don’t want that! Like is it that hard for these studios to realize that we just want a faithful 2D animated Berserk adaptation… They have a gold mine which is the Berserk manga but choose to be hella cheap with it. So annoying who ever holds the rights or whatever to animate berserk needs to give it up to someone else that’ll give Berserk the love and actual money to make a proper NON CGI anime

I'm not the type to complain about this usually, but man... they sure made Casca white/sickly yellow in the CGI movies. Her skin tone in the waterfall scene was genuinely like a sickly yellow color, really spoiled the mood. Potentially the fault of the CGI, but the 2016 show did the same thing.

The movies are basically like sped up OVAs recapping the story of the original series with a lot of stuff taken out and some smaller scenes added.
Id rather watch the 1997 berserk show than a cheap efforted cgi fight scene. Its hard to pull cgi off, well.

I don't think full Berserk story without cgi is possible because the character designs are so complex, plus, it would cost the studio way more initially to produce cgi show instead of going full 2D.

Honestly all the 2D stuff in this show looks pretty fantastic, but the 3D is just really jarring and and mediocre. The story itself is also pretty weirdly adapted
The biggest problem with Memorial Edition is that it's objectively the best adaptation of the Golden Age Arc and the weeb nostalgy induced community can't accept that fact. I watched this first because of a friend and I owe him for that, the other versions are absolute garbage. Also this shows that it's possible to make Berzerk with this kind of CGI and look really really good.
The fact that no1 did yet a proper anime adaptation of this manga is beyon belief...

My thoughts on the memorial edition? Missed again. I love berserk, don’t mind memorial edition, but I cry knowing that people will watch this and not feel the same sense of grotesque wonder that I got in the 97 anime. Sure, skull knight is here, but we need an amalgamation of all three styles. The expansive story of 97, skull knight from beyond, and maybe just more dayum episodes. Sick of seeing golden age arc and conviction, I wanna see the REAL lost children arc lol

Berserk 1967 in my opinion probably was the closest they’ve got, an I think it’s amazing then the new one they got, the old one u actually feel for guts and the characters but idk man that’s just me
I've said this about the standalone movies as well, but while they aren't a substitute for the manga (nothing will ever REALLY be) they are a decent companion piece if you've already read it or seen the 97 anime. I still have my hopes that a proper adaptation will grace us someday.

I honestly think studios should stop trying to adapt Berserk and we accept as fans that it is simply unadaptable with the current climate of the anime industry. A proper Berserk adaption would have to be one of the largest scoped animes ever made to do it justice and there just isn't a studio willing to do it and honestly probably justifiably so. If Berserk did have this amazing incredibly well animated and directed anime would it be profitable? The material and themes of Berserk don't lend themselves to wide spread appeal and perhaps studios are worried it simply wouldn't make money.
Eh, to me what we call "unadaptable" is some behind the scenes issue. Nothing convinces me the reason it goes wrong every time isn't exclusively because of businessmen. Not about possible profit, or production limits on their own, just people getting in the way of something greater.

For about 15 years people have been telling themselves it's too dark to be adapted, don't you think the climate changed in that time? Just look at what's popular nowadays. I can't speak for the japanese television side, but at that point if that's the issue they can take other measures like make it an ONA instead, or allowing interested parties to adapt the IP properly. Someone, in some side behind the scenes won't let the bone go, and can't nail the adaptation themselves. It's definitely human error and not some quality of the manga that is impossible to adapt, in current times.
A proper Berserk adaptation is something some auteur director would need to do, because releasing a hugely scoped adaptation with even the best, hand drawn art possible would just be a disappointment if it came out alongside all the other seasonal garbage. The typical anime conventions of writing and pacing and shot composition would have to be completely shafted in favor of someone with an actual vision and intention of not just making a Berserk adaptation, but a good one.
This is the problem . This berserk was amazing . In todays society this is the biggest problem . The Fans are never happy . Most of the probelem is outside of japan . The japanese love the cgi etc . we didnt need another golden arcs, we needed a remake of 2016/17 seasons, and lost children arc.. this felt like a crunchyroll cash grab- banking off of a legends death, and the highly dedicated fan base.
