Rowe Electronics PDM60 and the PIAA LP530 LED Driving Lights

  • Rowe-Electronics, has come up with an alternative to the standard accessory fuse box and relay system, with the PDM60 (Power Distribution Module 60). This device is a solid-state unit that can handle up to six accessory circuits, and up to 60 AMPs of current. Like the fuse box described above, the PMD60 is wired directly to your bikes battery, isolating it from the rest of the electrical system. It is also activated via a keyed trigger wire, or a keyed ground wire (the PDM60 can be set up either way).
    The advantages of the PMD60 are that you do not have to maintain physical relays and fuses, and each circuit is programmable for Amperage, trigger method, as well as an activation or deactivation delay.
    One of the accessories I have added to my 2015 Yamaha Super Tenere, are the PIAA LP530 LED driving lights. I was looking for a light that would only enable me to see better at night, but also make me more visible during day-light hours. I think these lights accomplish both task very well.
    Purchase the PDM60 at Twisted throttle:

    Purchase the PIAA LP530 LED driving lights through Amazon,

    Sorry Craig the last comment went to early as I accidentally hit the send button...lol...What I was going to say is I purchased the Rowe PDM60 in January this year only to realise my BMW GS Adventure had the sat nav & extra lights already hard wired so really I did not need it so sent it back & luckily received a full refund. What I did need was the Givi S110 & S111 which is now fitted to my GS Adventure as it gives me connections to charge my iPhone, iPad & GoPro Camera on the fly ready for my US Tour. The PDM60 is without doubt a brilliant piece of kit but as mentioned most BMW's GS motorcycles don't need it because of the factory hard wired systems.

    try pointing the left one down a bit to light in front and leave the right one up for distance. The left one pointing slightly down will be better for oncoming traffic as well.

    As far as tools go...9 days through Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Labrador, and Quebec on my Tenere I overpacked on tools. Air compressor, plugs,patches, tire removal and breakdown tools, electrical tape, bailing wire, zip ties, spare fuses, rope ( flat lay mule tape works great because takes less space) and a few random metric sockets.
    This is probably all I would take on a long trip.
    It's a Yamaha.
    I realize I am not traveling to Alaska and back and you need to put much more thought in it. Just a few suggestions for you.
    Have a great trip.......

    Installing the PDM60 on any bike doesn't really require any connectors, not even the Tenere. Just buy a Posi-tap connector and tap directly into a trigger wire. A wire that works every time would be the tail-light wire. A Posi-tap does minimal damage to a wire and if you want to remove it later, you can. Just wrap some electrical tape around the wire afterwards if a tiny hole in the cable sheath bothers you.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  6 років тому +2

      You can do it with posi-connectors, and I have done so in other cases. In this case the OEM connector is there, so I figured why not use it? Makes for cleaner installation...part of my OCD. Thanks for the input!

    Hi Craig, love the vids, very interested in your trip to Alaska. I have done it and at the same time of year that you are. While you have the lights, don't let them tempt you into riding at night once you get on the Alaska highway out of Dawson Creek (or in Wyoming or Montana for that matter if you are going through there). There are truly so many bears, elk (and hundreds of deer and elk in Montana and Alberta) etc. around and on the roads that it is seriously dangerous. Once dusk hits, head for a motel (I camp too, but I saw bears every afternoon...so...being a wuss, headed for a motel!). Northern British Columbia is full of bears...and, they say, there are more bears than people in the Yukon. Best, Douglas

      Thanks for the tip. We are definitely going to try and stop at reasonable hours. The only reason we would push harder is if something unforeseen happens. But even then, as you said, we can grab a motel if necessary.

    I noticed that there is a 20 amp fuse in the wiring of the LP530 PIAA LED lamps. The PDM60 has a limit of 15 which is covered under the warranty. Did you void the warranty of the PDM to increase to 20? Or am I missing something?

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  5 років тому

      I am not sure about 20 amps voiding your warranty...at least I don't remember seeing that in directions for the one I bought. I came with at least one of circuits set to 20 amps. It has been a while so I would have to go and look at my settings, but as I recall they lamps and the switch have a pretty low draw, so I think I set my on 5 or 10.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab

      It isolates the accessories from the bike's electrical system, which is important with modern CANBUS systems.. You can do the same thing with fuses and relays, but the PDM 60 is a programmable all in one solution.

    Can someone tell me please why my pdm’s lights are on even if my bike switch is off, and why my air horn can be activated with a button even if switch is off but that line needed the ground trigger activation???

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  6 років тому +1

      First, let me say that, a friend of my did get a defective one and had to have it replaced. However, to figure it out, I would start with the simple things. Is your trigger wire connected to a keyed wire? If the hot trigger is connected to a line that is always hot, then the PDM will always be on. Or if it is set up to be ground triggered, maybe the ground is always active...? As I said in the video all of my circuits are keyed on the hot wire. To trouble shoot, I would try setting up the PMD to be triggered on the hot and leave the ground unconnected. If it works, then you know the ground is the issue. If it is still on when the key is off, then you are not connected to a keyed wire. Your might also call PMD and see if they can help you. Here is their trouble shooting page.

    • @363rs
      @363rs 6 років тому

      thank you for replay. That was actually, totally stupidity of mine. Instead of connecting ground trigger wire to switch that triggers ground, I connected it directly to baterry ground. what a clown I am. Since the battery ground is continuous one, it was keeping the PDM lights ON continuously. Also, my horn wiring was actually wrong. All I needed to do is 5th line(PDM) positive to horn, negative (PDM) to negative horn and ground ( purple ground trigger on PDM) to the ground side of the horn switch (ground trigger) of the horn. That's it!

      Craig Ripley I also don't like brand names on my motorcycles or Trucks.
      I feel that once i pay for a machine it belongs to me, not the company.
      I don't mind things like the Yamaha symbol.
      But i don't like words all over my stuff.
      I took all the words off my Mercury Mountaineer.
      If its just a small brand logo, i'm ok with that. but i don't need a bunch of words to wax around.
      My old 1973 Honda was a bitch to wax with those big Honda words on the gas tank.
      I don't have to wax some of the bikes now days, because they are lust plastic covers you can wipe with a rag.
      No paint to protect anymore.
      My 2005 cruiser has paint on the gas tank, but the 2 fenders are plastic.

      The TV is full of it.
      Is why i stopped watching TV all together.
      If i want to watch a Movie, i can wait for it to come out on Netflix.
      No commercials.
      I love my bikes, But its odd i never bought a shirt with a motorcycle logo.

    Hello Craig! I plan to pick up a new 2018 Super Tenere ES this coming Thursday. I was wondering if you still recommend the SM-Motech Adventure/Outback side cases and the PIAA Driving lights. I'm planning on getting the better Yamaha skid plate especially since you do not have to take it off to change the oil filter. I haven't decided about what brand of crash bars to purchase yet. If i mount the driving lights under the headlight I don't think Yamaha's crash bar will work due to the cross bar. Your input would be appreciated.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  5 років тому

      Congratulations on the Tenere, I am sure you will enjoy it. Yes, the bags have worked out great, I have no complaints and would buy them again. The PIAA lights have also been good as well. I don't ride that much at night so mainly they are for increased visibility. If you don't mind spending the money, the Clearwaters or Denalis are probably better. At some point I might upgrade. I think you are right about the upper crash bars, you would have to mount the lights to the bar. There are a few different bars for the Tenere, but I can only speak to the AltRider crash bars. They do their job, but are expensive if you to replace them. But cheaper than an engine. Hope this helps, ride safe!
