    I have literally reported photos and accounts with up-close shots of new/fresh self harm, and instagram has repeated DENIED the reports, and left them up. Wtf? How can they take down your photos, and not the other reported? I completely agree with you, and it really upsets me. It is inspiring to me to see photos of you having a great time. It is disgraceful for instagram to take down these photos, which tell others that they too can have fun times despite a difficult past.
    I'm so glad you're speaking out about this in a video. Keep staying true to yourself and advocating for mental health. You are absolutely amazing and inspiring, Marie xxxxx

      Literally same! I report posts that are graphic up close purposely taken images of fresh self harm, yet I've had holiday photos removed from my Instagram because my scars are on show. Guess what got removed...my photos. The photos I reported are still there.

    This topic has honestly really upset and angered me lately. I've seen photos of a new mother with her baby being deleted because she happened to have self harm scars. She re uploaded and it was blurred. She also posted stretch marks...STRETCH MARKS and that was blurred. Completely sends out the wrong message and adds to shame and stigma. Thanks for speaking out. We need to fight this. #iamnotashamed #youcantcensormyskin

    The fact that IG is trying to delete or sensor anything and everything is ridiculous. Not everyone has had a perfect life, people have scars, they have marks - saying that you are not allowed to show your skin because it is imperfect, is like saying you are not allowed to have a mental illness. You are absolutely beautiful Marie and the strength you have to show your scars, and your survival, so openly should be praised, no sensored. #iamnotashamed #dontsensormyskin

    Bloody love this! Scars are forever and we can't spend our entire lives sugar coated. Disgraceful of Instagram to remove the pictures they did. They're triggers everywhere, we have to adapt and learn to get through, or the cycle will never end. i get it, if I saw a picture of fresh cuts I would feel a trigger to do it to myself again and I think triggers are a normal thing as a part of recovery. But scars aren't triggering, seeing other people's scars make me believe that I can do that to, I can heal and live a life beyond self harm. I find it really inspiring to me when people learn to love their scars, this is so so wrong💔x

    Honestly Instagram needs to sort there shit out. I’m so done I’ve seen so many of my friends (INCLUDING YOU❤️) have there photos deleted or censored because of having scars it’s disgusting. Instagram is meant to be a place in my opinion for body confidence where you can take photos of yourself when you feel your best. By deleting people’s posts like yours it makes people feel ashamed or embarrassed that a popular social media sight has deemed them offensive. By taking down people’s photos it implies that self harm and your past is something that should be hidden. Therefore, they are encouraging the stigma. Thank you for speaking out👏🏽

  • @chelseacate7651

    I think you are totally correct! I think that this is adding to the stigma. I think they need more guidelines between self harm and sensitive-content self harm. Like you said. Fresh cuts have no place on Instagram. But healed and taken care of scars in a picture that simply shows someone in a normal situation is simply that. Someone in a happy and normal situation. You said you could edit them out. I think the idea is that if you were to edit it out and have it be a “normal” picture, then it is good. If you edit scars out of a picture and you end up with a picture of a random arm. And only an arm, then the point of the picture is to show those scars. But if you edit scars out of a picture and you end up with something more than a body part, something that has a story and a meaning, then the point of the picture was to tell that story and that meaning, not to show scars. I personally don’t have any pictures with my self harm because I’m too paranoid, but i hope that your campaign works well. And i will definitely try to support it.
    Thank you Marie for being someone who is not afraid to stand up for something that deserves attention. You are a beautiful soul. Don’t let this get you down, you are beautiful inside and out. We all love you and we will all support you in whatever you feel you need to do.

    For a young woman who still deals with self harm and is on social media, it's hard. I have had my videos from tik tok deleted, pictures from Instagram deleted and I totally agree with you. By deleting or putting a "sensitive content that some might find disturbing" sign on it makes me, and others who have had this happen to them, feel like crap. It makes us feel like we shouldn't wear our arms out. Along with that, I'm kind of mature for my age and have been self harming for years now and it really hurts that such a popular type of media is doing this. I'm with you on this. xo

    I'm sooo with you on this. It took me so many years to go out in public or wear nice things that *happen* to show my scars. I'm finally at peace with them and not paranoid about them being on view. I've found these new guidelines really upsetting in all honesty and it's put me off using Instagram altogether.

  • @christina7182
    @christina7182 5 років тому

    thank you for speaking up about this!. I don't think that it's okay what instagram is doing and I fully understand, that you are mad about it. You should be able to enjoy moments in life and capture them without directly being associated with your mental illness. As you already said, you can't get rid of those scars and they are gonna stuck with you until forever and i'm so soo sooo proud of you, for being open about it, for showing your scars and for being stronger than your mental illness. You help a lot of people - including myself- to feel more confident to wear their arms out and to show your self harm scars and to fully accept them. It's nice that some social media sites want to protect us but on the other hand I think it's necessary to break the stigma around mental illness and not to hide it in any way. Because of this behaviour instagram makes it look like we have to be ashamed to have scars and that we aren't as normal as other people around us and that makes me really sad.

  • @mariefionaricot3968
    @mariefionaricot3968 5 років тому +10

    Basically long story short any photo that you post from now on will be 'sensored' or 'deleted '. So instagram and other social media wants us to break the stigma around mental health, but when it takes so much just to upload a photo for us. They just end up being deleted and they don't even bother thinking about how much it takes just to upload a photo. Life cannot be censored (don't get me wrong I understand fresh cut and stuff) but how can we show are identify and something huge that we overcomes if it's just 'censured '.

    It’s such a slap in the face, we’ve all come so far to overcome self harm and exist without it taking over us, we take photos of ourselves enjoying life and feeling good they’re removed? It’s totally erasing the people who are living breathing proof that there is life after a problem with self harm

    I couldn't agree more, I've stopped uploading photos of myself to instagram because I hate the process of not only picking a photo where I feel like I look okay, but where my arms and legs look acceptable. Ooh, I am so sorry that this happened to you. Things have been deleted from my Instagram, too, that I had posted to empower myself. And having them deleted felt so shitty. Instagram's censoring policy can be so discriminatory. Your scars are a part of your body and of your past. You don't have to hide them. Or your illness or your past. It took me so long to share my story and feelings. It's so brave to do that. These kinds of reactions can make it so much harder. It's really not ok.

    Marie, it doesn't matter what anyone says, you're beautiful. Our past doesn't define us. People who upload fresh cuts are the ones who deserve to be deleted. These photos show you are strong and beautifully so. You deserve to live your life without being judged for something you don't advocate. It's the opposite; you encourage recovery.
    Stay strong, my beautiful Marie.

    i was at a party in January and I was wearing a really nice top but it had short sleeves, I took a picture with my friend Sophie and you could see my scars in it, I was so ashamed that I photoshopped the scars off of my arm. After seeing your posts about embracing the scars and loving them I decided to post the raw picture with my scars because it was a moment where I was genuinely happy, and Instagram took it down. It hurts so bad and made me feel like something was wrong with me for harming myself, it was horrible

    Preach! I am so glad you made this video to highlight the unfairness of this issue! Your photos are beautiful and I hope you don’t stop re-uploading them because you have every right to! It’s crazy, I’ve seen a lot worse on instagram that hasn’t been censored at all, so why should the app do it to photos where the self harm is fully healed and barely visible in these photos. Seeing people like you be so confident wearing their scars out, is something that really gives me inspiration, confidence and hope that I too will able to wear my scars out one day. Instagram -this needs to stop! Again thank you for spreading out on this Marie, keep uploading those photos because you are beautiful!💜

    This is rediculous, so wrong! It’s made me so sad. People choosing to show their scars is their choice and it’s amazing that people do that to show they aren’t ashamed - like you! But when the photos get taken down, it’s just teaching people that they have to hide their scars and that it’s a bad thing to show but it’s not. It shows that people got through a very tough time. The people that don’t like to have pictures of self harm on line should just be happy that that person is looking happy now and is still alive. Sending you lots of love Marie, and to anyone else who needs it. 💖💖 #iamnotashamed

    Your amazing be strong 🖕🏼to insta, if anything your pictures with your scars out not that they are the main focus on your pictures because you are literally stunning but noticing them and how comfortable you are in your own skin gives me hope and courage that one day I’ll be comfortable in my own skin just like you are and not feel the need to hide them anymore. You do you ♥️#notashamed #beproudofyourbattle x

    I don’t know if anyone else has seen this too, but the instagram page for DollsKill frequently upload men and women with self harm scars and they are also put as ‘sensitive content’ it’s just so wrong we shouldn’t have to hide our bodies!!

    So Instagram let's people post photos of themselves almost naked in a bikini and doesn't care but takes down fully clothed people which happen to have scars! So ridiculous 😡😡😡😡

    I fully agree with you, no one should be ashamed of their scars we are told to love ourselves and not be ashamed but how can we when Instagram deletes posts with healed scars, I don’t understand it either
