From TLC’s description of the show:
Long-distance relationships have challenges that are sometimes difficult to overcome but consider if the distance traveled was halfway around the world and a couple had just 90 days to decide whether the courtship should conclude with marriage. That's the situation facing the men and women profiled in this series, which shares the complexities of international romances. Using a visa that allows foreign fiancees of American citizens to travel to the U.S., the men and women experience life in the States with their prospective mates for the first time. Culture and language barriers must be overcome -- not to mention the stigma of being thought of as mail-order spouses -- but here's the elephant in the room: The couples must marry before the visas expire in 90 days, or else the visitors have to immediately return to their countries. With the clock ticking, these couples discover if their "happily ever after" is meant to be.

Since you’re every so often asking for new shows/movies to review. I think you’re going to enjoy doing that with the tv-series Shark. Especially season 1 episode 1 where the foundation for the series is laid our. Hot shot lawyer Shark quits his job as defense attorney for wealthy clients as he has grown a conscience and is subsequently hired as an ADA to shape up the DA’s office to run it like his previous practice.

Making a relationship work is hard enough, but to pick someone who can't speak your language is crazy.
But but but but we have this unspoken connection
@@bbhfjdy9175 Omg, I can't believe I laughed at that.
Not really. Happens all over the world especially with countries surrounding you all speaking different languages like in Europe and Africa
@Jacque Jasper I'm not talking about people who knows 2 languages or more and dates a person who understands at least one of the languages. That's not the problem. I'm talking about people who don't know each others languages at all. Let's say one wants to learn the others language so they can date. It's not easy to become fluent and it takes a lot of time to learn, not everyone is willing to wait. If they can't communicate at all, the relationship can fail.
Well, one might also say that not knowing each other's language makes it harder to argue with each other.

I’m a K-1 Immigrant, now a permanent resident of the US. If you want to know what that experience is like as a genuine applicant...
It’s awful. The whole procedure assumes you are lying and trying to hide something or enter unlawfully and it does not stop after you get here.
I was denied a permanent drivers license because the USCIS took two years to assign me a permanent green card after my provisional one ran out and all I had were letters of extension.
Additionally, after 5 years (under the Trump admin), they threatened to deport me if I did not provide evidence that we were still together and in a committed relationship as we had not had a child or bought a home together in that time.
Also to clarify. I’m British, Male, and not especially attractive. So I probably had less of an issue than most.
Yeah, the Trump administration treated immigrants worse than any other administration. I'm sorry you went through that and welcome to the US. It sucks here lol
@@katherineduke3232 tested worse must mean something...
I’m so sorry you went through this. Immigration is hell and the US loves threatening to deport people. The strictness that tried to prevent people from exploiting the visas hurts good and honest people who just want to be together. I’m glad to hear that you’ve finally got your permanent residency.
Britain fell apart without you man, clearly you were the glue holding everything together
My sister-in-law came on a K1 from Russia to marry my brother. And she's above average attractive (I think). Let's just say they had to strongly demonstrate that they had a legit relationship (plane tickets of them visiting each other, photos of them together in Russia and the US, emails, pictures of them with each other's families, etc, etc, etc). And this was during the transition from Bush to Obama. Can't even imagine during Trump.

As a person who just went through the K1 process legitimately. I hate these shows.

My wife came to the US using a K1. We were not playing or joking, we were a serious couple. These shows will only make it harder for serious legitimate couples.

@@stevenbaker8128 as Daniel said.. these shows make it more difficult for legitimate couples to go through the process. As with any process, abuse will cause more scrutiny. Fortunately my fiance's visa was approved but it was extremely stressful.
So do you hate the fact that this happens or someone with a camera is making money on it? I am sure there are people who do this without the cameras. Though I would tend to agree that it is not a show I would watch, much like Jerry Springer.

When I was young I thought that money laundering was forgetting dollar bills in your jeans pocket and washing them.
Lol
well, figuratively that is what it is. You "wash" your black money to turn them white
I watched Office Space in middle school. Also, they had to look up money laundering in the dictionary in that film.
It comes from mobsters investing in laundromats as fronts to have a source to declare where they got their money from.
I could see that lol. The crime is that figuratively. When I was around 10 I used to literally launder my money so I get it. The us dollar has a lot of cotton in it and you can wash it. Id use dish soap, warm water, clean em up, then iron them (including using starch). It made the money perfectly flat and crispy like a brand new bill. This was all ultimately so that my cash would be taken in by the coin changer at the arcade, the first time, everytime. 😅
I went through the K-1 process and brought my fiancé over from Ukraine in 2005 as well as her child. I can tell you first hand what the process was like. While we didn't have a camera crew following us around like the show does, it's pretty accurate with how 2 people can meet from two different countries and cultures. First up, the K-1 process is brutal from start to finish. All told it takes 4 years to fully be completed and most people don't understand how or why it's this long. The beginning process of the 90 day is very straight forward and is the simplest part of a multi year process. You meet someone, get an immigration lawyer, fill out a ton of paperwork and if the K-1 visa is approved (IF), then your fiancé gets to come to the U.S. for 90 days and both of you get to "try" out and see if your going to end up getting married. If you marry in the 90 days, then that's where all of the "fun" starts (not really). If you don't get married before the 90 days is over, she or he has to go back to their country or they risk over staying their visa and at that point they would have no chance of coming to the U.S. again. If you do get married, there is a whole lot more paperwork, interviews and thousands of dollars spent EVERY YEAR for the first 4 years. That's right, you go through this process every year because you have to change the status of the K-1 from a fiancé visa to getting a "green card". But they don't get a green card right away. they get a temporary "white" card which is a legal status to stay in the U.S. while the paperwork makes it's way through the government agencies. They do interviews every year as well as asking you to fill out the same paperwork you did before, which is a way for the government to make more money (thousands by the way). Every year you have to do finger prints, bio documents all in quadruple copies and it's a mound of paperwork. When I did back in 2005 it costs about $675 for the bio, plus $125. per fingerprints and of course everything is times 2 as i had my wife's daughter to do also and there are all kinds of other costs that I won't bother to mention. It costs about $10k over the 4 years including the lawyers fees and government fees. So you better make the right decision on who you bring over, because it will be costly.
Also, as a fun fact, back in 2006 we were asked to be on a show that was in development, this would turn out to be the original 90 day fiancée show as well as the "after the 90 day" too. It was the latter show they wanted me and my wife to be a part of. At the time we thought it would be great to do it but in the end, we both said no because of the intrusiveness to our everyday lives as well as my 7 year old stepdaughters life as well. Back then the show would have paid us $7,000. for a 13 episode run. Now it's like $20k or more from what I heard...
What was it like having a mail order bride?
@@looksirdroids9134 It was the greatest thrill and point in my life and if i was younger (I'm 66) I would do it again. /i got married to a woman from Dnipor when i was 49, she was 29 and her daughter became from stepdaughter and that was a beautiful thing.
that is absolutely not how it went for me (k-1 2005, married 2006). I (the American) never had an interview. Pretty sure she didn't have any between the AOS and citizenship application 4 years later. The white card is essentially as good as a green card while you have it, as long as you don't leave the country and try to come back. But you get the perks of a permanent resident visa
We didn't use a lawyer, but $10k doesn't sound out of line, including fees, if you do.

We have a friend that immigrated from Canada on a K-1 visa and was detained at the airport for over 24 hours for questioning because they suspected she was an escort. She’s a professional burlesque dancer (not at all an escort lol) but they were suspicious when they found her costumes and such in her luggage. Luckily she was granted access and was able to still move, but I couldn’t imagine how stressful that was for her.
i know prostitution is illegal there... but... dam that's too much.
if they so scared about human traffic i get that, but then, should they not just... make a follow up on those visas? and offer help instead of deportation in the case something fishy is going on?
Oh yeah the airport is not where you want to be detained. The TSA doesn't at all have to treat you like a standard police officer does.
@@12aguskapo : because a large number of people that vote in the politicians who make these decisions are xenophobes who want to apply the strictest standard to immigrants, but then think it's okay for just anyone from their own country to have kids and own guns.
why would they use a K1 visa ? Canada-US allows 6 months/year of stay without visa... so why not just get married in that 6 months instead of 90 days and avoid all that paper work ?
Well, you still would have to do the same paperwork after the fact, and sometimes it is more difficult to obtain a green card that way. We had another Canadian friend who did that and basically got stuck in this weird limbo because she wasn’t eligible to work, they ended up having a baby and had a lot of trouble coming up with the funds to have a lawyer sort everything out. I don’t remember all the details, but it took about six years for her to get her green card. I sponsored my husband to move from Canada with a k-3 and he was able to get his green card in about 6 months. We actually didn’t even wait the 90 days because we wanted to expedite the immigration process so he could be eligible to work. We’ve been married 6 years now and he obtained citizenship last year. Every case is a little different, but the few people I’ve known who filed after the fact had a harder time and it seemed to drag things out more.

I mean... The record holder for the oldest pregnancy was a woman who surrogated for her daughter who had fertile eggs but was unable to carry a pregnancy to term so. 😰
The woman was literally post menopausal. Like.
The saddest part of all this is it's pretty much all extreme loneliness. I can understand if you lived abroad or just happened to meet someone on holiday but most of these people seem to have just found someone online in desperation.

"She asked her daughter for one of her eggs"
..My mom did this just because she wanted another baby, period. SHE HOUNDED me about it. I gave her nothing - she was a horrible mother and didn't need another kid. Why would I give my mother one of my eggs to abuse and beat?
That was one of our last blows to the relationship we barely had. She would call me four or five times a day trying to beg for it, saying she;d stop calling if I just gave her one of my eggs.
I blocked her number. She called from someone elses' phone. Block that. She'd just find a new person to call me from. I told her no. She had drug issues, anger issues, some kind of mental dissorder she denied and never got help for, and she told me more than once she wished I had died instead of my brother. I don't wouldn't have given her an egg if humanity depended on it, y'all -- sorry. I'd give it to ANYONE ELSE - but not her.
I eventually left Texas and she died of a drug overdose a year later? Yeah. What a great use of an egg that would have been. I feel awful for saying it - but - I do not miss her.
I'm sorry you had to go through that. That's crazy that happened 😳
Leaving her behind and not giving in was smart.

There's a story behind the international marriage broker act. It was started for Anastasia Solovieva, an immigrant who suffered horrible abuse and was eventually murdered at 20 by her husband. He had stalked and abused his previous wife so badly she had to flee and change her name. Knowing that could have saved Anastasia's life. 😔 Her story always makes me so sad, especially seeing her parents grief. I hope she's at peace. ❤️

Lindsay Ellis nostalgia chick watches legal eagle!!?
I would love to see you rip this show apart
Are you trying to say that a 20 Yr old Russian girl with the looks of a super model can't fall in "love" with a 45 yr old, 300 lb trailer-park-dweller who looks like he was caught in an explosion at the Pizza roll factory?
Cynic.
Hi Lindsey!
I love your channel too!

"Shit shit shit shit... this is *not* what I was going for"
Abort mission!!
@Sam Lives Here And then turns out to have a criminal record and yeets into the woods
She doubled down though, if you pop out a grandkid then gramma might sponsor the immigration.
She has a green card now but she actually doesn’t want to live in the US. They moved to the US because Paul promised her he’d be able to work and support a better life for them but that turned out to be a crock of shit and they’re back in Brazil last I heard.
This seems like a ton of work to marry someone you only have 90 days to get to know or have your mind made up after meeting for 8 hours
Ideally you're expected to have already decided. And you just want to marry in the us.
The show is representing the visa in the wrong way. The visa isn't some sort of trial. It's for legitimate couples who have met online or on vacation or something who want to live in the US as a couple.
People do legitimately met people overseas while working or studying.
The only couple I know that used it spent a year together while she was in the US on a student visa, her visa ran out so she went home and got things in order then came back for the ceremony.
Well, I think most people meet online or in person and ideally they would meet and spend additional time together before applying. As much as it pains me to say it, my brother has made a pretty good effort with his Brazilian girlfriend/fiancée to bring her over here. I don't mind the idea of doing a K-1 or doing international dating, I just don't like that he chose Brazil, and now he will have a permanent reason to keep going back to Brazil--a country with safety and security issues due to civil unrest. After all, literally everyone she knows, including her family, is in Brazil. It's not like she's gonna come here and never go back to visit her own family.
As someone who is currently in the middle of the K-1 visa process I love and hate this show. Love it because I'm a sucker for drama, but hate it because it gives my relationship a bad look. But it also makes me super hopeful that I'll have no issues with my application if these couples are able to get approved lmao
My buddy did it legit and it took forever but it all works out
Same here. Mine process was long, took 1 year, but no problems. All was approved, went. Smooth
I know a few people married with K-1s and another couple working on getting a CR-1. It's invariably an insanely long, opaque, and stressful process. I feel for you. Stay strong! 💪

As a person that has been through this process from the K1 visa, to marriage, green card, and on to citizenship with my husband; this is a long and expensive process that involves a LOT of paperwork. We completed all without a lawyer because our situation was uncomplicated (no language barrier, no children of former relationships, no criminal records on either side, etc). If you want to embark on this journey, you need to do some research and understand what you're getting into.

“Certainly a lot of people are going to pass judgment”
It is what I do best
I've done the non immigrant visa. It took a whole year.Having lived in Mauritius, Thailand and France, I had to get police reports from all these countries. I had to prove I have enough money that I will not be needing money from USA for 3 years.
After everything was filed it took 10 months before I could fly to Kenya from mauritius for an interview where they sent me back home for additional medical tests which took 2 months. then I flew back to Kenya for another interview at the embassy after which they gave me all my papers right there on the spot. I was good to go.
It's a stressful and difficult process.
Oh my god I almost forgot about the police stuff. You have to pay for and supply police reports for every place your fiance lived in order to prove they were not a felon and had no serious record. You also have to get those documents translated to English and notorized. It's insane how much information the K1 requires. Mine took a year and a half before we got it, and another year once we got married for the adjustment of status and all of those interviews.
@@Subparanon I had to go to my local police station in Mauritius and convince them to take my fingerprints. It was administration hell because noone knew what papers to fill. They sent me to HQ at the capital city then back at the local police office. Finally I sat with the local police chief who asked me how my dad is doing (small island nation), eventually he asked someone to take my fingerprints. it was with ink and the wooden roller. Then it was sent to Thailand where I heard nothing for like 2 months. So I called and they said "in progress". That right there is a huge fear of administrative limbo. And all of this is not even the US visa process yet hahaha. I'm glad I'm here now though.
@@NicolasdeFontenay I know exactly how that feels. The not hearing anything, and being afraid that at any moment you might get stuck or denied, is draining. I'll say this about the K1 process though, you don't do it to completion if you aren't 100% in love and want to be with them. You wouldn't go through all that for a fling.

"Melania, blink twice if you need help" mug had me in stitches
I went partway through this process back in 2013. I was engaged to a guy from Egypt and we decided it would be much better for him to move here because of all the chaos happening there. It was a ton of paperwork just to get it started and it was exacerbated by the fact that he was living in England at the time. He had to get his parents to find some of his necessary documents that were back in Egypt, scan and email them to him to be translated, and then email them to me to give to the lawyer. The relationship ended up falling apart before he came here but I was a year into the process before that happened and it was a massive headache. Anyone who is thinking about doing this know that it will take a lot of time, effort, and money. Absolutely make sure it's worth it.
J gbolso o. Do p
I think a lot of it depends on where the fiance is coming from. My English husband was let into the US quite quickly on a K1 and with very little hassle. I suspect they greenlit our case early due to him speaking the same language already, etc.

Every time I learn about a TLC show I am reminded why I despise TLC.
Remember when the "L" stood for "Learning"?
@@JackgarPrime I'm learning that this channel is shite.
I'm old. I still remember when TLC was first on the air. They had almost no initial content and almost no ad partners. They mostly just had old documentaries and shorts with maybe some commercials for charities. This was back in the early/mid 90s. After a couple years they had managed some really good actually educational shows. Then I guess that wasn't enough for them so they started adding fluff content and they rebranded... never the same again. Arround the same time Discovery launched and I never looked back (for really good edu content). I still sometimes watch some of the renovation or realty reality shows if I'm supremely bored.
@@Tomasu82 I think Pawn Stars was the beginning of the end for educational channels like TLC and History. Once that became a massive hit on History, you started seeing an explosion of lazy reality show based content on these channels, which has only gotten worse and worse over time.
