Dude, thanks for your videos! I just got a new Canyon with Di2 and the instructions online and otherwise *suck* (and I'm a software/hardware nerd). So glad you made these step-by-step videos!
I don’t know yet which mode is my preferred one, but at least now i know what are the different modes available, how to set parameters! Very useful video. Thanks for that.
I think you are right. Synchro Shifting is the best methode to get the best possible results. I have changed 6 months ago and be happy. Thank you for this video.
I just purchased a Spec Expert with ultegra Di2, and this is the first video that I have found to be truly helpful. It would be useful to see if you have an updated video. Thanks. g
Excellent video to show how to setup electronic shifting with di2 system! My new bike arrives tomorrow and I am excited to try to use the knowledge gained from Saul. Thank you!!!
Hi, Brilliant video which really helped when I upgraded my 6870 group-set to sychro with the new battery. I have a smaller frame with shorter chainstays and was getting some cross-chain rub so your info on how to adjust the downshift values from the default settings was really helpful and let me cure the problem by shifting one cog earlier. Big thanks. Mike
Thanks for this video, much clearer than any Shimano documentation. Default settings for synchro mode aren't adequate in my opinion. For instance, shifting from 50-25 to 34-21 would have been better from 50-21 to 34-17 for much more appropriate chain alignment. Unfortunately, I found it impossible to program it. Software doesn't allow for such setting and I don't understand why.
Would love to have a chat with the person who decided two blinks for shift mode 1 and three blinks for shift mode 2 was a good idea. 😂 Very helpful video, thank you!
Thanks for your very clear and informative video. I have the bluetooth connection so even easier to program. I have been riding in the synchro mode and have to agree I dont think I will be reverting. The only thing I found was that when climbing and going through the gears it is better to drop to the small chainring earlier to avoid that double movement under load. Going the other way is fine as the chain is ''dropping down'' and not ''climbing up''. I will be doing the Pyrenees again in June so I dont think I will be in the large chainring much at all anyway!!
I agree completely. That is how I use Synchro also. You will enjoy your big chainring on the descents. I road the Pyrenees in 2010. Check out my video for a preview of what to expect. ua-cam.com/video/Jw3vGgzM_3I/v-deo.html
I find semi sync mode more manageable then full synchro shifting, which gives me more control of when I want to change from big to small rings. Also the greater the range of the rear cog Ie.. 11-30 vs 11-23 would require less change, so instead of the default which is set to 2 (upshift or down shifting), I find changing it to one smooths out your cadence, when shifting. Just my preference, and I usually run semi sync more than manual or full synchronized shifting.
You can set the options to correspond to any shift-mode you like. This simply changes the order of your mode selection. Not sure how this could be of benefit.
Thank you for this extremely helpful viedeo! I had everything set up as described but nothing happend. Thanks to your tip with the double click at the control unit I could start synchro-shift on my bike and it is great! So thanks!!!
My chainring set up, 50-36, which is not unusual, is not catered for in the Etubes software which is odd. I am also blocked from using small, and 10/11 gear on the cassette. (This with 9150 rear derailleur). I made a video using Synchro out on the road showing it's pros and cons. I have to say I'm not a massive fan, and prefer semi synchro if anything. Good clear vid by the way!
Thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately the software does not offer all the gear combinations as options. The software is not that sophisticated that it actually uses the gear ratios you select. It only illustrates possible sequences and cross-over points. You can make your own gear chart on paper if you want to know the actual gear ratios that can be used. You can use the default gears shown on the screen and select cross-over points that match your paper chart. You are basically mapping a default gear selection to your paper chart. But after-all, Its about riding, Enjoy!
Thanks. Personally, I found the Etubes app (using Bluetooth) buggy, so didn't bother progressing any further with it (especially as my gear combination was not shown). The default Shimano change points seem to be about right, but I still think that Shimano cannot 'see' the terrain you are riding, so sometimes it will be doing the 'wrong' thing. And I still don't like that I cannot access 10 and 11 gear in small ring.
Thanks. I checked my compatibility and it's good. I followed the instructions all the way up to 4:50 of the video. But nothing happens when I double click the button. Am I missing a step?
Set the mode to Adjustment Mode by pressing and holding the mode selection button on the junction box for 2 seconds. The red light should come on. Then press and hold the button again to get out of Adjustment Mode. What do the lights do?
Super video. Thanks. A question. In syncro mode [full syncro], you mentioned that the kleft shifter controls what ring you are in. Say, you put it in the big and then keep on changing to a lower gear on the right shifter, will it still syncro shift from the big to the small?
Great video!! Could you please tell me how to update in E-Tube project the cassette if I went from 28x11 to 32X11 (in from I have 50x34)? It is not an option on the program. Thanks!
Just use the gear positions and not the gear ratios to select the cross-over points. IE: Rear cog position 1-11 and front 1 or 2. The program does not really know what gear ratios you are using
You do a good job of explaining however, I am still confused. Syncroshift is something I am interested in. But I don't like the default shift point on the cassette from large ring to small ring. Mine is shifting the front big ring to the small ring only when the chain wants to shift to the largest 30T cog in the rear. I would rather have it shift the front rings at a point where the chain wants to shift to the second largest cog in the back. This chart and the color codes doesn't seem to be that simple to me yet. Could you provide more detail?
@@velotiqueBetterWatchSaul I gave the default settings a try first while out on a ride today. I liked the shifting when I started climbing and had to move to easier gears, but the shifts at the opposite end when speeding up was very clunky with the chain moving to the big ring and the cog in the back at the same time. I think I will just control the shifting on my own. The syncroshifting is not for me.
Your video was excellent and very informative! However, any experienced cyclist wouldn’t use full synchronized shifting! I disagree with you there but applaud you on an excellent video. Thank You 🙏 sir!
Thank you. I prefer manual shifting. With experience I can shift faster manually without the clunk of a Synchro Shift. Some users prefer not to think about when to manually shift. The user can choose.
I'm an experienced cyclist and much prefer syncro shift, especially since I have a very large gear range on the back (11-42) and I don't want to accidentally select the wrong combination. I find I shift more often with syncro shift, keeping my RPM constant and optimum.

Brilliant video thanks. One question im having an issue where im on my laptop in the etube screen on Synchro settings. I cant move the 50T selection down to 2.00 or 2.17. What i mean is when im in the front big 50 ring and the rear gets up to the 3rd biggest sprocket, id like the front ring then to drop from 50 to 34, but it wont till the rear get up to the biggest sprocket, Thats way to late for me. Its not really fully customisable as it says. Am I doing anything wrong? Looking forward to your reply. Thanks Meurig
Great video thanks - I understand that this requires the DN110 battery. My bike is a year old (2016 Giant Defy) with Ultegra Di2; how can I tell which battery is already installed?
Thanks, yes I did that (it was easier than I anticipated) and sadly I have the old battery. Not sure how long before I can justify the cost to upgrade. Still loving the non-synchro Di2.

Thansk for you vid. I have a problem with my di2 my battery is draining even not in use. My battery is good. Maybe you have an idea. Thank you in advance
How do I get my bike out of synchro shift mode? I have aTrek Domane SLR 7 with Ultegra Di2. Unlike the bike in the video above, there is no junction box installed on my bike. To charge my system, I plug into the handlebar end cap. I have the E-tube software on my iPhone, but it never detects my bike. Am I supposed to download the E-Tube software on my laptop and plug it directly into the handlebar end port??
The handlebar end is your junction box. Double click the button on the the end cap where you plug in the charger. If you do not have a wireless D-Fly on your Di2 setup you will need to run the E-tube program on your computer via USB wire.
velo, i just got my new road bike, i was riding a hybrid but now i bought a motobecane le champion with shimano 6800 ultegra di2. i charged the battery and updated the software. my questions are as follows. without pressing any buttons, can change gears as i did with my other bike. do i have to press any buttons for the di2 to work. should i wait awhile before going into full sycho as in your video.
Like to ask for some advice on this subject. Yesterday I followed your instructions but somewhere I went wrong.OK, so I have updated my Di2 no problem. Then I decided to preset to semi synchronised. I selected semi synchronised shift. Then followed the instructions to complete. However on my first ride today I still had to change manually. So my question is "why". Should I also have clicked on the right brake box to activate this function from that gear shifter?
Hi Saul I don't understand why the blue option, from big chain ring to small will not allow me to select gear change in the the third gear and cancel the first and second.
Is this supported with the Ultrega 6870's also? Oh, I'm seeing I need the newer battery. Can I just upgrade the derailleurs to 6870 plus battery and keep my older 10 speed shifters? Or should they be upgraded also..?
It is always best to stop before making any changes. It is dangerous to take your attention off the road. It is also difficult to see the indicator LEDs on the junction box from a riding position.
Did you check the Compatibility Chart e-tubeproject.shimano.com/pdf/en/HM-CC.3.3.2-00-EN.pdf If your equipment is compatible with Synchro the problem may be the timing of your double click; too fast/too slow?
I've been running the synchro shift for a few weeks with a 50/34 and 32 rear cassette,at the moment it drops on to the 34(front ring) only when i change the rear to the 32 T .......Ideally I'd like it to drop to the 34 (front ring ) when I change to the rear 25T. I've played around with the shifting mode but cant seem to get the combo correct............could you give me some pointer to achieve this (there isn't a 32 cassette to select in the programme so is this the problem?)
Since those are not the options listed you will have to pick an available set of option from the drop-down menu. Just use the gear positions and not the gear ratios to select the cross-over points. IE: Rear cog position 1-11 and front 1 or 2. The program does not really know what gear ratios you are using. Good Luck.
What if you are on the 50 ring and drop down to the 34 , on full synchro will it adjust the rear mech up a couple of gears or is that just the semi synchro ?
You will need the newer battery, external or internal. Make sure the rest of your components are compatible. Compatibility Chart e-tubeproject.shimano.com/pdf/en/HM-CC.3.3.2-00-EN.pdf.
My system is stuck in synch mode double clicking the junction box until its back in manual mode wont allow me to shift into big ring . the battery is fully charged and all the cable connections are good. Is it possible to reset it using the wireless unit ? Thanks
Check E-tube Project software settings for the various modes. It sounds like you have set some of the modes incorrectly. You can reset all to default settings and see if this changes things.
Great video. Shimano's manuals are horrible so I appreciate this! The E-Tube part went fine. However, my mode button does nothing on a double click. Thoughts?
Aside from getting the timing right for a double click the most common problem is not having the compatible devices installed on your bike. The battery is the usual culprit. Make sure that you have the DN110 or BM-DN100 battery installed and all firmware is updated.
It looks like I have the SM-BTR-2. Does that mean I'm out of luck? Also, I do get the warning message "If SM-BMR1/SM-BMR2/SM-BTR2 is connected, shift mode will not fuction even if set." Does that mean its not compatiable or I need to connect the junction box or complete the configuation with the battery disconnected?
Thanks you saved me a couple more hours of my life. I googled the battery and found a compatibility chart that might be helpful for your other subscribers. e-tubeproject.shimano.com/pdf/en/HM-CC.3.0.0-01-EN.pdf Thanks for the help!
In the e-tube appon iPhone I do not seem to be allowed to change the rear cassette from 11-28 to another one. ie. a 11-25 get message: bike has a gear structure that cannot be configured. any ideas how to solve this?
There are many unlisted gear ratios. The app does not really know what gears you have. Just pick the cross over points as gear positions not the gear teeth numbers. That is if you are configuring Synchro.
@@velotiqueBetterWatchSaul Thanks for this, I will probably do that. Only thing is (not really important) that my garmin (edge1030) will not show the correct teeth combination, but I can live with that:)
Do you have a charging cable that plugs into a USB charger? Have you checked the comparability of you components? Compatibility Chart e-tubeproject.shimano.com/pdf/en/HM-CC.3.3.2-00-EN.pdf
Hi, I have the BT-DN110 battery and the EW-WU111, all firmware is updated to latest version on all components, synchro shift is set on mode 1, however, I cannot switch between the modes. Double-pressing the junction box A button produces no effect, no led lits up. The system remains in manual mode, which I am able to check by a long press of a shifter's pad (green comes up for battery, then green + led, no blinking, so... manual mode). My Garmin 820 shows 'M' and I was not able to find any option to change shifting mode from Di2 sensor details. Any ideas? :(
It sounds like you might be missing the timing of the double-click if it does not respond by changing mode. Try experimenting with the double-click timing. This is often a problem. The long-press, does indicate you are in Mode 1 with a single green+red flash. Check your firmware update and component compatibility and then contact Shimano to see if they can help.
Hi, that wasn't the problem. I've actually solved it by resetting the shifting modes back to factory settings (I had them reversed to full synchro on S1 and semi on S2). Everything worked as expected afterwards.
The best Di2 tutorial on the net. Expertly delivered, clear and precise.
Thank you.

Sorry, I'm not quite clear on your question.
great instructional video
Thank You.
Great job, thank you!
Thanks
Can I use ultegra di2 levers and deore xt derailleur? Thanks

hi,
could you make a video with the ew-wu101 ?
Thanks.
Great Idea.
Is this supported with the Ultrega 6870's also? Oh, I'm seeing I need the newer battery. Can I just upgrade the derailleurs to 6870 plus battery and keep my older 10 speed shifters? Or should they be upgraded also..?
Consult the Compatibility Chart. You will need all the matching components. e-tubeproject.shimano.com/pdf/en/HM-CC.3.0.0-01-EN.pdf
Don’t I need to replace my seat post battery with a newer model? This was not mentioned.
Yes if it is not on the "Compatibility List"
Excellent. Thanks a lot
You are welcome!
Are those race legal?
You can change the shift mode during the ride or you need to stop to make the change?
It is always best to stop before making any changes. It is dangerous to take your attention off the road. It is also difficult to see the indicator LEDs on the junction box from a riding position.
My light for battery check comes on ,but the double click on the juntion box no light is coming on?
Did you check the Compatibility Chart e-tubeproject.shimano.com/pdf/en/HM-CC.3.3.2-00-EN.pdf
If your equipment is compatible with Synchro the problem may be the timing of your double click; too fast/too slow?
In Full Synchro, shifting the front derailleur does not effect the rear. Semi causes the rear derailleur to adjust to changes on the front.
Hi, I have old di2 i.e my junction box can't connect using usb. Is ts possible to buy the new boxes to get the new features
You will need more than just a new junction box. You will need all the components listed in the Compatibility Chart

great job ! thank you
You are welcome.
I have an older Ultegra that can not do Syncro shifting, what do I need new Battery or battery holder? I have external battery, thanks.
You will need the newer battery, external or internal. Make sure the rest of your components are compatible. Compatibility Chart

@@velotiqueBetterWatchSaul thanks for getting back to me ill try that
Great video.
Sorry , you do need the new battery for synchro to work.
Thanks you saved me a couple more hours of my life. I googled the battery and found a compatibility chart that might be helpful for your other subscribers.

Thanks for the help!
You are welcome. Thanks for sharing the chart.
I cannot get the drivers to run this program. Can you assist me with that?
What kind of cable do I need to connect junction box to my computer to do the upgrade?
It is the charging cable that you use to charge your Di2 battery. it is the one that came with your Di2 system
velotique thanks, but I have the external battery with different charger.
Do you have a charging cable that plugs into a USB charger? Have you checked the comparability of you components? Compatibility Chart

Do I need to update my internal battery in my 11 speed Di2 set up to allow syncro shifting ?
You will need to have the DN110 or BM-DN100 battery for this to work.
Is this setup Synchronized shifting posible on all bicke with Di2? My model is

Im use 10 speed cassette I want put 11 speed cassette would be work deruileiur di2 for 11 speed cassette?
Hi,
I have the BT-DN110 battery and the EW-WU111, all firmware is updated to latest version on all components, synchro shift is set on mode 1, however, I cannot switch between the modes.
Glad to hear that you resolved it.
Super explanation
Thank you 🙂
