- Sarah Richardson is here to transform Eva and Patrick's Kitchen. The couple recently brought an an old property which they’ve slowly been renovating. However, the kitchen needs a major makeover. Eva wanted to remove the stairs to create an open plan area, install new ovens and sinks, install new counters, and much more. Sounds easy, right? With a strict no beige rule, Sarah and The Design Inc Team have a mammoth task on their hands of bringing the old home to the present.

I feel like this couple was fortunate to have their renovations find the live wires and mold behind the basement walls. Sure it screwed up their plans for a bit but an electrical fire burning their home to the ground would have been much worse! In addition who wants a long-term inexplicable illness related to hidden mold behind the wall? Now, this couple won’t have to deal with those issues AND they still got a gorgeous new kitchen/dining area on time and on budget thanks to their design and construction team coming up with smart, strategic savings. It beautiful! Love it!
Gotta say, this is such an accurate depiction of a typical renovation of a vintage house, I’ve done lots of them and they all have unhappy surprises, things going wrong and the budget is always going over because of cost overruns. Welcome to the reality of renovation!
Definitely something I've experienced is that when new home owners buy an older (what I call Victorian home) they are usually built around 1884-1900. And the owners don't really have an understanding of the many renovations or add on's that have occurred over the year's nor the many surprises that show up behind drywall etc. Mold is a given as well as the many dead critters found in the walls, poor electrical issues, and horse hair or old newspapers used for insulation. As far as sticking to a budget...This can be really challenging as well as an eye opener. As well too many people gut the entire vintage home rather than bring it back to it's former glory and lose so many of the original details. To each their own 💌

Love the rich colours and Sarah and Tommy together are always terrific, however there's no real child friendly kitchen eating area. This was a firm design requirement made by the clients for their small child, and at the end of the reno they're left with no kitchen table or child appropriate seating. Thanks Abode for another great Design Inc. 😀
Sure there was. If you look closely, at the end of the kitchen near the back door, they lowered the counter for 2 seats where their kids could sit safely. Either way, clients always have to sign off on every decision, so even if there wasn't an appropriate spot it would be the clients' decision/fault, not the designers'.
1:29 in and husband throws her under boss; "Eva has ALWAYS planned on renovating". Well, it's your home too. Do YOU not use the kitchen? Who is the primary user of kitchen? Who is watching the baby while trying to juggle kitchen tasks? Resale value not a priority one day? so many thoughts this early in hehe
I think it is one of my faves--- LOVE love love this Design Inc.! (ABODE you just made my lunch hour! :). I hadn't seen it--- and I enjoy seeing the connections w/ other episodes (like the countertops! :). Despite such structural & electrical issues, they created quite a stunning kitchen/dining combo (plus staying on time and budget!?! I'm flabbergasted, tbh.). I really like the cabinetry contrast---it's classic-looking & just beautiful. (Too bad they couldn't use the original backsplash suggestion, but still looks stunning) Thank you once again ABODE.🥰🥰🥰
also, call me CRAZY! but everyone I know personally [obviously I don't know as many ppl as Sarah or Tommy] who did kitchen Renos sans designers, all found IKEA sextion cabinetry to be more hardwearing and price easy than custom kitchens. My two cents would have been to go that route for cabinetry, customize the finishes where I can such as backsplash and counters, but not rule out a big box store for those cost savings to get the infrastructure done right. Mold vs expensive showroom kitchen?
Gaud the worst part of design work would be working with clients that know nothing about design but insist on major input 🥴
ok so I am confused. They said they did Not want or like a beige & white kitchen, but Sarah wants a beige and cream kitchen? And then they also went for the beige? Where is the color? Where is the child friendly seating? This one is a nope for me.
This one is Nah for me !! I would extend cabinetry all the way to the end of the wall since you have peninsula with eating space with chairs. Much functional that way : )
The clients specifically wanted a separate place in the kitchen where their kids could eat, and if you look closely you'll see that they even lowered the counter height down so that their kids could sit there comfortably and safely. So as designed, it was definitely more functional... for them!

It would have been nice to see stairwell finish. Great otherwise.
Enough!!! Of the open concept addiction, such nonsense. If I'm cooking, I don't need an audience to chop an onion, nor watch someone doing it.
The fact that they carved $5K out of their original kitchen plan so they could fix the basement mold issues tells me ya gotta watch Sarah at every penny. That's insane. Obviously she was being frivolous with other people's money!! "So we can do what we want too" is never a sentence a designer should say. It should ALWYAS be about what the client wants!!! Fabulous end result. SHOCKED they kept the homeowners curtains. I wonder if that was part of the saved 5K!?
I got the impression the homeowners always wanted to reuse the existing dining room decor. But editing could make it appear that way.
There is a difference between frivolous and high end. Don't forget, eliminating the wainscotting alone saved them $5,000.00.
How can the customers be angry because the builders discovered mold in the cellar - and by that prevented them from having mold growing all over the house?? 😳

People get mad about things they can't change all the time! It's an easier emotion because it's less vulnerable, but really, potato - po-tah-to. They weren't happy about the shock, but they got over it.
My house was thrown up in 1989 as the model in a condo/townhouse dev.
The builders just threw it together, made poor tree choices (10-20 yrs, only, then died or roots invaded, awful grading, causing huge drainage issues, etc.)
Down-and-dirty building, cut corners, hidden poor practices throughout. Sigh.
Tract home builders are heinous.
I can't comment on the finished product because once again we only saw very brief closeup shots of a few spaces. This is not anything new or different from all of Sarah's videos. We need less closeups of Sarah talking and have a wide view of the whole finished space. And for more than three seconds. And can you please get rid of the disturbing tinny back ground music. While I'm complaining I guess I'll point out what is missing. These people have young
children but there is no place for them. God forbid that a high chair may spoil Sarah's design . I've been a fan of Sarah's for years now and it's pretty obvious that Sarah is getting careless with budgets. Choosing high cost materials when they are not necessary. I'm not suggesting that she be penny wise and pound foolish but a little moderation would not hurt.

Christmas is at the corner, The wisest thing that should be on everyone mind currently should be to invest in different streams of income that doesn't depend on the govt. Especially with the current economic crisis around the world.
