      @@kitano8025 Thanks for being honest! All of my international friends and my students have told me the same thing. Knowing a little bit ahead of time can help with the embarrassment. When I lived in Taiwan, I tried to order green tea with as much Chinese as I knew. I wanted tea with a little sugar. Since I was from the USA, he thought, "hey, maybe he likes a lot of sugar." So when I ordered my tea at the tea stand in Chinese, I must have said the wrong thing because my tea was too sweet! I felt so embarrassed, but I didn't want to lose face, so I just drank it anyway. 🤣

    I work at a Subway currently, and there is a different way that Subway employees like to hear you order. He was pretty good and because of he was filming, I won't say he took a long time to order, but most Subway employees do not like it when you take a really long time to order. It stops the flow of service. Anyway, here's how I (and probably most Subway employees) like to hear you order a sandwich:
    I would like a six-inch/footlong of "insert sandwich here" (Italian BMT, Spicy Italian, etc.)" on "insert bread here (Italian, Honey Oat, Wheat, Italian Herbs and Cheese)" with "Insert Cheese here (different Subways have different options for cheese)" toasted/not toasted. This way we know exactly what to do with the sandwich and won't have to ask you as many questions. Instead the only questions will be for add-ons (like guac, bacon, double cheese, or double/ deluxe meat (which means half of what a footlong/six inch is)). The veggie side is ok to take some time on since there is no set way you have to build your sandwich. Anyway, this is just my two cents to a video that is a bit old, but from the view of a Subway employee

      I am glad it helps! Keep in mind that there may be a few differences in Australian English compared to the American English I taught in the video. @@ESLWithPurpose Thanks a million! I will keep that in mind. I think another major difference is that the branches in Australia close very early! I arrived the Subway I was planning to go to at 4:15 p.m two days ago and found out later they opened until 4 p.m. SO SAD! LOL

      I've had a fear of ordering at Subway ever since the last time I was there. I overheard the guy who made my sandwich making fun of me to the cashier. As I was paying for the meal, he comes over to the cashier and says "wow, toasted" and then starts laughing, and I'm pretty sure he was still making fun of me while I was at the soda dispenser. I don't know what I did wrong, I am a little awkward, but he didn't have to make fun of me while I was still standing in the lobby. I'm just proud of myself for not calling him out on it and making a scene.

    My favourite (toasted) sub used to be cheese, cucumber and salami on Italian herb and cheese bread, simple, but tasty :))

      Yes, Subway may be different in each country. I think they contextualize the kinds of toppings they use in various countries. Pizza Hut and other major American restaurant chains are the same. When we lived in Taiwan, they had lobster and other seafood on the pizza. They do not do this in the United States. :)

    I am a native English speaker and this still makes me nervous. I have never been in a Subway to place my order and I feel if I went in with a flyer showing exactly which sub I wanted they would still ask exactly what I wanted on it which would seem strange to me since it's in the flyer ad. Do they know how to make every individual sub or do they ant you to tell them every ingredient?

    • @ESLWithPurpose
      @ESLWithPurpose  2 роки тому

      They typically say, “what do you want on it?” Even though you might say, “I’d like an Italian B.M.T., they might put the meat on it, but they will ask, “what kind of cheese?” You can then specify additional toppings. That said, some of the hot sandwiches like the meatball sub you could say, “just make it standard or regular.” They usually know how to make the menu branded subs. It honestly depends on the employee helping you.
