Will my “FREE” Toyota 4RUNNER 3RD GEN Pass A Safety Inspection?

  • In this video we look over my Toyota drivetrain and body, these are all things I have to inspect before I bringing it in for a safety inspection. I replace both lower control arms and fix my fuel tank door, plus a quick paint job for my wheel caps. Starting to be really happy with this project.

Keep an eye on that frame. It needs to be cleaned and coated

If it were me, I’d give that whole underside a quick once over with a rust wheel on a small hand grinder, take off all the major flaking and loose rust, convert the whole frame with a rust converter and coat it with an oil coating. As is I only see it last a year or two before it starts to actually rot from the inside out. Rust wheel, converter and coating will help that thing last 5+ years

Actually I wouldn’t bother doing that. I would buy a 6 pack of POR-15 and sure knock the heavy stuff off. But POR-15 likes a toothy surface. Once it’s on there it’s staying. POR-15 took a 2000 hour salt spray test with no problems. It also bonds to metal forming a glossy black coating that will laugh off age. As soon as I buy out my 2022 Tacoma off its lease that’s what I’m doing with it. I’m hitting the welds for sure along with the areas I know they get rusty. Toyota went to a C channel frame making it easy to protect it. After I POR-15 it I’ll consider laying rustolium gloss black over that. That way I know my truck will last long enough to hit 250,000 miles. If you do that you’ll be replacing the drivetrain before you need be concerned about rot

I'm not sure paint is going to last long on that one. I would go with the crone oil or linseed, you going to need something that creeps and stays put.

      @ti_caliss
It can actually hurt it more by locking in moisture. They can and do rot inside a paint shell because paint will not creep in deep enough However it can be treated with a number of good products out there first to neutralize the rust first and then paint. It's a lot of work and I have done it , i then put oil over the top of all that. I am currently driving an 02 that I had great success with doing this process, the rust has completely stopped and it's been 5 years. It's also important to do the inside of the frame or it will all be done for nothing. Like I said they rot from the inside out more than the outside in.
Unfortunately this frame does not have much time left.

You should clean that frame off. Then do some rust converter then seal it with stuff like Fluid Film, CRC, cosmoline, por-15 etc. It wont survive much more winters.

You got a real "deal" on that Runner. I'd wire wheel/sand the frame/rear axle and paint/Fluid film it, but before go around with a small hammer and bag all over the frame. loosen the rust on inside and take a coat hanger and bend a little hook on the end and stick it in any holes on bottom of frame and dig around some and get a lot of the inside rust out, you'll probably be amazed how much comes out!

I dont know if its the same with 4Runners, but Tundras from the same years have a problem with the ball joints and its pretty important to replace them with OEM Toyota parts becasue the aftermarket ones seems to fail more often than not. Great find! Also I think the Pence coins are from the UK.

Recheck those tires. If it's been sitting outside for those 5 years, the dry rot is probably an issue and they'll not withstand too much stress while driving, especially highway speeds. Great find and worth keeping, those engines are amazingly resilient!

    Hello. Trax N Tires
You got a good vehicle there, it cleaned up very nice, you know your stuff.
But I would just like to give you an advice, I hope you don't mind.
In the future, when ever you are tightening control arms, upper or lower cradles
It's a good idea to have the vehicle on its suspension, holding the weight of the vehicle before fully tightening them, The vehicle should be resting on all four tires, this will eliminate excessive torque on the bushing rubber, and they would last a lot longer. When the suspension is all the way down and these components are tighten, they put extra ringing torque on the bushings rubber, and they don't last. I just thought I would share this little trick with you, and those who watch your videos.
    Thanks for sharing your videos.
    Cool, enjoy the Toyota.
    bye.

Control arm bushing should be tightened when sitting on the ground. At least that’s what I’ve always been told.... The gas filler door on my wife’s car was locked via a little electric motor when you locked the car. The motor went bad with the filler door locked. It was a pain in the rear but I finally got it open and removed the electric lock....

Also, I noticed in the last few vides under the hood near the battery ground there is a loose wire attached to the chassis, that's the body ground so make sure you connect that back up to the negative terminal!

Thank you so much for the update. I've been waiting to see more of this 4Runner. Despite the rust on the underside, it still looks mostly solid (right?). Would POR-15 help out?
For the lower control arms, I read that people highly recommend buying genuine Toyota parts over aftermarket (not sure how true that is or if its just rumors over the world wide web).
Thanks for the educational entertainment and keep up the great work!

Here in NZ I have a 96 Surf, (Basically an up speced 4Runner), I notice with most of the U Tube videos on these cars the North American ones seem be suffering from lots of surface rust underneath and some with structural rust in the frames (Chassis). We don't use salt on the roads here, is that why we don't see this problem nearly so much on our cars? Or were the Surfs just better protected during manufacture?
