Is The Engine Bad? 3rd Gen 4Runner Build EP2

- Back working on the 4Runner project. Taking off those stupid running boards and putting on some new mirrors. Then diving into the engine and giving it a leak down test. Finding that cylinder 3 and 5 are pretty bad. Now to figure out what to do.

With what these things are selling for, you can't go wrong at a $500 starting point
Exactly. The prices are crazy these days
Naw fr. I even got a major deal recently with 171k miles at 7300$ in stellar blue.
@@calvinsallee man i got mine with 186k for $3200
shiiiiit I just got one with a broken odometer for 2500 🤣 it had 180k in '15, so who knows
I was gifted a 2001 limited only they wrong was a broken rear shock
I got a 2002 4Runner Limited, really excited to see where this build goes. Not too many 3rd gens getting built
Dude, where is this magical 3rd gen 4runner junk yard?
very nice video, would love to see the repair of the motor.
Thanks! I gotta order some parts.
It may be worth pulling the valve covers and checking the valve clearance. The lazy cylinders may be out of adjustment. If that’s OK, it would be cool to see you pull the heads and lap the valves to see if those leak down numbers get better. It may end up just being worn rings that are letting all the pressure by, but at least you will know for sure if your work on the valves. Plus a head gasket and valve lapping are cheap compared to a new engine. Just my 2 cents - good video.
Thanks! I am suspecting a bad head gasket between cylinder 3 and 5 because you can smell the coolant from the exhaust
@@initiatedrift I hope that’s it, instead of the rings! I know 80%+ on a leak down is pretty good on small engines at least. If new head gaskets brings the other two cylinders back up, that engine may end up being OK. Looking forward to seeing what you decide to do!
8 have a 97 and I most likely have head gasket issues. Nice seats.
If you are keeping the rig, pull the engine and rebuild. Way more fun than a swap. Plus you know what you are paying for.
I'm excited to follow this project. Keep it up
I have a 97 4runner 4x4 and I had to replace the original engine at 341k miles. I know a really good mechanic that specializes in 3rd gens so I was able to get everything done for right around $1900. They're more than worth saving though. They're awesome at just about everything except for moving quickly and getting good fuel mileage lol. Point is, you got a hell of a deal, especially if it's 4wd
What was wrong with the old engine? And how many b owners? I’m at 330k
It's a 3rd gen 4runner. The engine can't be bad 🤣
Those jdm engines are going for crazy money.
Perfect whip to work on, its so simple and fun. Im for sure that the leaks is from the head gaskets, im pump to see u work on!!!
Hey I know im late but to test the compresión you meet to have intake and exhaust valves close if that is not done the air is gonna leak out to the exhaust ( cyl5) and the intake ( cyl3)
You should fix that engine Man!!
I probably will.
Just wish I’m your friend :’)
Need an update!
What did you decide to do?
Wheres the FJ?

I still have it. It is for sale though
Don't rebuild, just swap it out with a good used engine
Yeah I’ve been looking but not finding anything good
