In this woodworking deep dive video we look at how a saw blade is sharpened. Well if my memory is correct, 0,001mm = 1 micron - Amazing accuracy!
I am far from an expert in metric. I model in metric on the computer so that's really good to know.

Love seeing this. As a manager of small to large machine shops for the last 30 years I have had probably millions of blades and tools sharpened. Last Shop had an Anca tool grinder to reprofile tools for our aggressive high speed machining we did. managing tool life and knowing when cutters would die we were able to get 4 custom grinds on the inner face before they were used up.

I've been a Diablo user for quite a while, figuring that they were good enough for the price. After this video, I went on Taylor Toolworks to check out the CMT blades. Found that the ITK Orange were on sale, so took the plunge ordering the 24, 42 & 60 tooth blades. Man, what a difference. Quality is evident down to the packaging. Looking forward to using them more.

For my next sharpening, I plan to use Accurate Cutting Tech in Indianapolis. I have read good things about their work. They are not east coast, but they are close to me.

I’ll have to find someone here on the East Coast that can do that level of machining. I got a CMT miter saw blade and a dedicated rip blade for the table saw. Both of them are great blades! Great video! It's cool to see what they can do. I have loved CMT blades and bits for a long while. I live in Edmonton Alberta and we have a similar place called All blades. They sharpen anything and even make bandsaw blades to any custom size.

There is a local guy that sharpens around me here. It cost me $8 to have a 24 tooth blade sharpened. and $4 to get my 2 3/8" Forstner bit sharpened. Gives you an idea of his price range.

Great video. But the Freud industrial blades are awesome. I have CMT and Freud blades. I love my CMT ripping blade. But the Freud premier fusion next gen general purpose blade is hands down the best table saw blade I’ve ever used. Idk why he was saying they aren’t good.

Wow, when was the last time any of us saw a CRT?
That blade inspection rig has been around for decades.
I was waiting for someone to notice that. I have been meaning to try to replace it, but the connections from the line generator are very specific and newer monitors will not work. These inspection machines have not been made in a number of years. They were made by a company called California Cedar Products. I found a patent dated 2002 for the machine, so maybe not quite as old as you might think. One of these days when the CRT monitor dies I will be forced to figure it out. Until then I will just have to live with it.

And your whole operation seems to be efficient and successful.
If and when it finally does die, inspection cameras are a commodity now so you might be surprised at the cost and resolution you can get today.
While I'd like to patronize you I'm in the NYC metro and have been using Forrest since the '70's, so I'm not about to change now....

Question after watching this, which is cheaper getting a blade sharpened or just buy a new one? I guess if you spend couple of hundred on blade but most of us probably spend 50 or so on a blade, just asking.
Ugh, why does the CMT ripping blades have the kickback shoulders...and why Jonathan are you recommending that blade when you have a SS? They explicitly state not to use those types of blades.
those Diablo blade have lots of pro...if you chip a tooth you can go get another blade at 1/4th the cost while the CMT you'll have to send it in and have it fix and sometime that's not as effective....so you'll lhave to go to HD and brade a blade to finish the project
I think i might use this company. Looks like they actually inspect the blades and make sure they are worth sharpening. Some of these companies advertise on their website like they do all types of inspections and diagnostic… but when you call them, they admit they do anything but sharpen what you send in
They were incredible and their turn around time is like 5x faster than anyone I've used before.
Looking at the blades you use, is a flat bottomed grind of some kind (tcg, ftg) not needed in a cross cut blade? Or do you just use your rip for that when that's needed?
Been doing this for 20 yrs. I use Cx100chp give a good quality sharpening.

I guess with the 5 axis machine they can do complex geometry like bevel+rake+shear angled teeth like those found on some exotic combo blades...
Re Freud - I think there is some miscommunication here - the Freud diablo stuff I see sold in the USA is not their top of the line industrial blades... So I don't think the comparison is fair. Top notch industrial Freud blades in Europe cost much more than the diablo stuff.
Re nanometer accuracy....I think you went a little overboard there. 1 Nm is a bit less than 10 atoms of iron/cobalt/magnesium etc.... No spinning industrial Cutting machine can be that accurate

I have a forrest blade that has a broken tooth from saw stops brakes. Does anyone know if that would be worth fixing or even possible to fix?

3 decimals of a millimeter is exactly microns. 0.001 mm = 1 micron .
The CMT looks like a great blade but do they offer a thin kerf that's decent? Lots of folks are using contractor or jobsite saws and I believe that thin is the way to go?

Re: CMT saw blades. All of their rip blades seem to be of the type that is not recommended for use with Sawstop. Which rip blade to you recommend?
Watch my sawstop video. I don't worry about it personally. That thing is so fast it would stop a tile blade before it cut you (for legal purposes that my opinion and you should make your own informed decision)

It blows my mind how they can Sharpen a blade for $20 and have to use all that expensive machinery to do it, that is why most of the sharpeners have gone out of business
Speaking from experience, what drove saw sharpeners out of business was the drastic reduction in price of blades off all types. My dad sharpened saws for most of my life growing up, and it just became cheaper to buy a new carbide blade than have him sharpen, or even replace the teeth. Specialty tools used in commercial settings were often sharpened in their own shops. Almost every customer was either a construction firm, or a construction worker. Even hand saws, which he had machines to re-tooth, sharpen, and set, couldn't be sharpened anymore because of induction hardening. He eventually realized that it was costing him.more money to keep the business going, and sold all but one of his bench grinders.
@@Myopicvisions yeah thats too bad, I know I have always had my stuff sharpened, I always by the best blades, It makes no sense to get a cheap blade it does me no good and gives me poor results. But the last local sharpening company shut down about 2 years ago, now I have a place that I drop them off and the guy takes them somewhere and theyre sharpened its better than the cost of shipping them all over
My guess is because this specific sharpening business is a value-added business to their selling of equipment. If this was not the case, with only two people working there, the investment will just not pay for itself.
But to pay $20 per blade is an absolute bargain.
Probably makes the real money selling Festool.

You are in a major metro area and if I remember correctly there is a decent lumber industry in Georgia. You might try calling a lumber mill there and asking, it’s worth a shot anyway.

Wow! Why not just charge for the blade on every job. Collect bad blades, get them sharpened and charge for them. I charge for blades on every job. Recip blades if I use a sawzall, circular saw blades when I use them in their job, oscillating blades, drill bits... everything. This is how I can ensure I have them in every job!
Because that's not feasible in our profession (furniture making). If you're doing it right you're using multiple blades per project and maybe making just a few cuts. This isn't construction or handyman work we're talking about. The right blades makes a difference in the amount of labor you do so therfore maintaining high quality blades actually saves money. PLUS! If you watch my previous video I break down how much more expensive cheap blades. They're a lot less cost effective than high quality blades.
So what you're saying is that this is *slightly* better than the Harbor Freight DIY model? 😂 Thanks for the lead on a sharpening service, it's one less thing I need to google. I also purchased my first CMT blade and absolutely love it! Also, as an avid ToT viewer, the machinist jargon used to trip me up. sorry to get off topic here. but you have covered many kinds of joints for wood working. I have yet to see the correct joint for a three way joint. I'm trying to build a frame box with wire on the side to put my garbage in. (damn varmints) anyway. The one i built is just a few year old and the top board keeps coming off on the front I assume this is from bags hitting it when they go in and out.If you need a picture I can get you one if are not understanding what i'm asking. Can't believe they replace teeth , the cost not worth it . I worked in a tool and cutter shop we did carbide saws allso for awhile . The blades became to cheap to do anything but sharpen. And eventually stopped doing them at all no one wanted to pay

@Maciej Jan Długosz I think of $50-100 as mid-tier compared to Ridge Carbide, Forrest, Systematic or FS.
Freud is in this middle tier, above their Diablo line and below the "premium" blades mentioned
why not just get a new blade?
Well I can understand that train of thought as here in Md I have yet to see any sharpening service do a top notch job. They take off too much material and they all seem to think it's necessary to sharpen the teeth on the outside not just the face. It wears down a blade faster so they can sell you another one you see. A scam in my book.
