The Blackstar Fly 3 vs the Danelectro Honeytone
For this demo I am playing through my Mexican Standard Telecaster Plus, with Blue Lace Sensor pickup in the Neck, and Dually Red Lace Sensor Humbucker in the bridge.
Let me know which one you prefer in this side by side demo.
Enjoy!

which amp did you prefer?
lando27music Still the Blackstar, especially with the extension cab option and now Bluetooth !? Pfff... the other ones just look cute but that's it jajaja
+Mercyful Media nice.ya all others are shelf ornaments
Blackstar by a nose! But I was looking for information on the Blackstar amp along with "Extension Cab". What about the Extension Cab? Thanks/
AmatullahK hey cool, ya check my channel for a video comparing the Katana Mini and the Fly 3. I use the extensio cab in that video
haha. oh well. that's a good name. 😂🎶
Thanks this helped, the Black star is obviously better but it’s also twice the price. The Honey Tone is small, CHEAP and is good enough for my needs. Which is to have a portable overdrive for my CBG in order to annoy my friends during camping.
Right now on Amazo, the Fly is over 3 times what the Honeytone sells for. $23.00 as opposed to $75.00. The Fly can be bought with 3 no interest payments of $25.00 each though.
I love my Honeytone. The drive leans more towards an OD- fuzz on the Honeytone whilst the Fly is more a distortion.
hey what sounds good to you is what is good. don't let anyone tell you otherwise. cheers!
I’m not too concerned about tone just sitting in my bedroom practicing. However I am concerned about price and size, so Honeytone it is!
Edit: bought this thing, turns out to be incredibly unreliable... the circuits began to crap out after 3 months. Just warning any potential buyers
Fucking LOL that’s the sort of argument they put out too: great for it’s size! Perfect for the beginner! Great for those not concerned about tone!
When you’ve got it home you’ll be so disappointed. You’d be better off playing an electric guitar unpluggged. Anything blackstar makes will always be better as their products are really solid.
Thanks dude! I hated the clear channel anyway, but it was almost free! Free is too expensive for this junk!
The Fly wins again!
I've watched a few other reviews on this, and in the comments there have been several people who have had issues after a few weeks.
I bought a Fly3, and got the extra speaker too. So far I love it!
Honeytone N-10 for the win. It can fit inside the small compartment of my guitar case. I'm able to play guitar at work on my breaks in stealth mode. I won't have to haul my guitar AND amp AND lunch. Plus, I don't need all the wattage to blast people out of the office. For my application, LESS IS MORE.
do what works!
But my blackstar fly fits in my guitar case as well 😳
Why bother playing guitar at the office, just wait till you’re home with a decent amp. Pointless to me.
@@aliray1165 I have more time at the office than I have at home most of the time.
@@JERRYR708 why not get a decent amp that doesn’t sound like a dozen bees farting through a megaphone, recorded on a gramophone, funnelled through grandads ear trumpet boosted by a big muff pedal?
Lando, that's mighty fine guitar playing! Thanks for your very helpful demo. At $21 on Amazon, the Danelectro is a good value for the money, but the Blackstar is definitely a more serious piece of gear: from the way it sounds to the way it looks, the way the controls are laid out, the jacks it has, and even the kind of batteries it uses. At $60 on Amazon, I'd say the Blackstar is well worth it. Thanks again!
Fred Chapman hey thanks for the lond words! Ya Blackstar is the best value. 👍🎸
Ok. This is a proper review cor these kinds of products.

oh hey thanks!
yeah, the blackstar sounds way better, but the honeytone is 15 bucks
plus honeytone is actually a mini amp, the blackstar is just a small amp, mini is smaller than small
@@kevinmorrice yeah honey tone is straight garbage, dunno what I was expecting for 15 bucks lmao
@@theguyof360 its ok if your on a tight budget while you save up for a better one
@@kevinmorrice Well, I just wanted to dick around with a tiny amp while on vacation. I should've gotten the Marshall's mini amp or one of the ones you plug right in to your guitar that you need headphones for (Vox mini amp). I have em now but still the Honeytone amp just failed on so many levels for me. I used it for like a week and it started breaking down and everything lol.
@@theguyof360 yep! It’s horrendous!
I have had the Honeytone for a few years. It’s great for its size. I use the Amplug2 (Blackstar) as a preamp into the honey tone, it opens up a whole host of different sounds as there are three channels (clean, crunch and OD) as well as three effects (reverb, delay or modulation) each with three presets per channel (only one effect at once though). As the Amplug is really a headphone amp I can play through it with headphones and inject backing tracks to play along with. Feeding all that into the Honeytone works well and gives loads of scope for different sounds in a very small form factor.
I ran an six cable from earphone jack into six jack on the radio in my pickup truck to demonstrate a cigar box guitar. It sounded really good. Much better than I expected
One more perspective. Dano: 15.2 x 7.6 x 15.2 cm, 430 g. Blackstar: 17.5 x 13.6 x 10.7 cm, 1 kg. Doesn't look like a big difference however for a _pocket_ amp might be critical, especially the depth and the weight. Nothing comes for free. I've built a DIY battery amp myself (ROG Ruby) but decided to go for a nicer Jensen 5'' speaker. Well... It sounds good but is too big/heavy for my gigbag so I've ended up with the Dano... Plus I don't get this extension cab thing, if there's a place where you have a cab, typically there's a couple of bigger and nicer amps also standing there, or ... ? ;)
What I would need it for I prefer the Honeytone.
hey ya whatever works for you is the right one! 😊
the fly3 is definitely a better amp, but for $20 the honeytone is worth it and does not sound all to bad.
it was $40 here in Canada, and the Fly3 is $79. I would pay the extra $40 for the Fly3
lando27music + $21.99 actually at Guitar Center here in the U.S. , and I think my fly3 was $59.00 as well
@@stepvanjoe3469 Wait so you got the Blackstar instead?
Honey tones sounds a little louder, defiantly less clarity at the higher volume. Fun fact: on the fly 3 packaging box the dude is playing a Dan electro guitar through the fly 3. Coincidence!?!
I'm a big fan of the Fly 3. Danelectro didn't do so bad though. Think I'll stick with the Blackstar. The Fly 3 is so amazing. It just doesn't do anything wrong. Sounds incredible no matter what you're up to. Love that little bugger.
bobfan2112 love the fly3 too. the danelectro actually sounded better micd than in the room. 🎸🎸🎸
the honey tones not bad i think running an eq pedal might remove some muddy frequencies
Nice review
The blackstar I think is the better buy, but price difference isn't mentioned. My son plays a Carvin DC400 through a Blackstar studio amp with excellent results. Blackstar is good equipment.
I’m looking for a battery powered amp for vocals I have a vintage mic my question is are these amps loud enough
That Black Star is just hard to beat, seems to do clean and dirty well. Hands down my ears pick this one.
JamCave Studio I'm still waiting to find a solid competitor. 😁
blackstar by far but I'm older than dirt and seem to like the cleaner tones best.
The Dano for me... Thanks for the comparison
cheers! 👍🎸
Blackstar hamds down has more volume and tone is better. However, I have a honeytone myself and at 12.00 used and 20.00 new its wins the portable amp. Yes its not as bright or sound as the blackstar but think where are you going to be using it? The beach, camping, hotel room, its for practice not gigging and the honeytone wins the i dont care what happens to it award. Spill a beer on it, i dont care. Get sand in it, i dont care. Third thing the honeytone has going for it is battery use. One battery vs 6. And i can tell mine held up to three days on one battery 2 hours practice a night. Its alot easier to cary one extra battery or 2 than 6. More batteries mean more juice which means lasting power suffers. So all things considered i believe the win goes for the honeytone. Sure its toylike but for 20 bucks each if you only get 3 years service your ahead of the game. I bought mine by the way in the early 2000s. So its at least 15-17 years old now. I think i got my moneys worth. And yes it still works fine.
Cool thanks for the info and opinion! Good to hear real experience stories. :)
Honeytone is not only a good sound but a very good budget amp. Starter or gift that won't break the bank.
'Clean Tones'
Honetone: 0:30
Blackstar: 2:56
Goin with HT. Doin Cruise 🚢 for 12 days & want something for suitcase & whisper volume, I can take on ship. Cheap & I can plug into wall
billyclub56 hey cool! do what works for you!
I bought one of each. They're still in their boxes. 😀 🎁🎁
Are the honeytone and blackstar compatible with the acoustic humbucker pickup?
should work, can't say how it will sound though
Me for the first minute and a half: “AHHHHH!! CHANGE PICKUPS. CHANGE. PICKUPS. Do SOMETHING!”
plz. .. comparation hotone heart attack vs blackstar fly 3
+CHRIS monte that wouldnt be fair, that's an amp head. 😊
I don't see many vids that include the Roland micro cube. It seems to get no love. they are often seen lurking in most work areas as set up amps. would like to see how it compares to the rest.
That's cheating, the roland micro cube is a real amp. These are just toys type noisemakers, that being said the Blackstar is pushing into real amp territory.
ya I'm trying to keep within a certain price range, and it had to be considered a mini amp. I hear the Roland amps are pretty good though!
There is really no comparison here. The HoneyTone sounds like a toy compared to the Fly 3 that actually sounds like a real guitar amp. There is a big price difference. For portability I use an inexpensive Monoprice headphone amp (>$10 US) and plug it into a Big Jambox that I already had.
Dale Palmer ya the fly3 is double the price. still yet to find something that stands up to the fly3
From all the reviews and testimony I have seen and heard the Fly 3 seems to be the best portable in that price range.
lando27music cant wait to see a battle betwen fly 3 vs boss katana mini. LOL
But which one is louder? The Danelectro claims 10W, while the Fly3 is only 3... is there a big difference in volume?
+Gustau Catalan I can't remember, I didnt have my decibel metre at the time. Fly3 definitely has better low end
The Danelectro is not 10w it's only 1w... That's why it Sucks !!
The fly 3 is just one of the best values for the money. Yes it's more than twice the price of the honeytone, but you get three times the quality.
+evilkingstanley its awesome. They just released a new model that has Bluetooth
This wasn’t a comparison; it was a slaughter.
ha ya 😁🎸
You do know that every mini amp that has dc and battery capabilities, sounds DIFFERENT when comparing battery to plugged in, right? The amps will sound WAY better plugged in, and louder.
No I didn't know that. I like to use batteries to have the freedom to move around. I don't use any power adapters on these mini amps
lando27music I apologize I didn't mean to sound snippy, I was honestly asking, hopefully you didn't take it that way.
But yeah man, if you plug them in they sound WAY better. I don't know why.
Hey no all good it's really hard to tell if somebody is angry or not, but I didn't take it that way. thanks for the info about the ac power 🎸😁👍
lando27music no problem man.
I would like to hear the fly hooked up to a bigger cabinet.
ya that would be interesting!
Well I will never learn. I need a small amp now because I have vertigo from playing too loud. And I already want to hook it up to a bigger speaker. Do we ever learn. LOL thanks for your response.
the sun is a deadly laser
for my money i would put it into the Blackstar..Sound blows the Honey away..
I think that the "Blackstar Fly 3," has a deeper richer tone.
Darryl Harris it does for sure! 😁
😀
You put a rain cloud on my bright day
I don't know that song
The Fly sounds best here but my Honeytone sounds far better than this one. Seems the tone knob here is at 8 o'clock? The fly is a better amp.
honestly, this isn't a comparison. Blackstar is in a different league, like the Boss Katana. there are novelty micro amps like the Honeytone, the Fenders, the Marshall... and there are real amps, just tiny, like the Fly, Katana etc.
👍🎸
Apples and oranges.
imo i like the sound of the blackstar better
🎸👍
2:30 theeeeeeere goooooes my herooooo! Watch him as he goes!
Blackstar by a mile!
Not bad
Its gonna be the fly3 isnt it?!
This is not a fair comparison. Danelectro sounds good for its prices and the Fly 3 sounds better because you need to pay for the extra technology in it. Both are good in their category.
Honey all the way !
You compare one amp with an other that costs 2 times and weight 2 timers more. thats two difrent priceclasses. if the more expensive amp is weaker this will be really sad...
martin894 thanks for checking out the video! :)
I have both and the Fly 3 is a legitimate amp and it actually gets loud as fuck honestly. The Honeytone is a piece of dogshit in comparison.
god... look how many batteries that Black star takes though...
I agree, but they last a looooong time
@@landonbailey one hopes :) ( I can jam for hours though)
@@landonbailey One could get rechargeables.. that would be ok
Like comparing a pedal bike to a car
I like that analogy 👍🎸
The second is the first.
what does that mean?
@@landonbailey Oops, sorry. I wanted to say that the second one sounds better. I was playing with words... Joking... Thanks for sharing the video.
ah haha! no worries take care :)
Tbh I had the blackstar and it really wasn't worth $65.
honeytone sounds jazzier
Stop whispering. Start shouting! B) Also, got one and blamed it on the Blackstar. Alrighty Imma see myself out.
Oh such cruelty to the poor little Honeytone toy. When you going to pit the Fly against a Yamaha THR or Vox Mini G5 to show much it can punch above its weight?
Oh jeez, ..BLACKSTAR. ...waaay. ..honeytone's about 2 steps removed from a toy, ..a playable, cute little retro styled novelty, toy.
$22 or $60

@@landonbailey numbers
Blackstar by a mile.
Really not a fair comparison, a $25 amp vs a $75 amp
why does it need to be fair? 😛
The honeytone sounds like crap.
I agree!
Honeytone sucks haha. I have one. It's God freaking awful
Oh such cruelty to the poor little Honeytone toy. When you going to pit the Fly against a Yamaha THR or Vox Mini G5 to show much it can punch above its weight?
ya I'd like to try one for sure. the price is what's stopping me right now. I'm self funding all these comparisons, so $40-50 is no problem, but the THR5 is around $300 after tax in Canada. If I can borrow one for sure! thanks
Hey, your videos are awesome! Certainly the manufacturers would lend you one for review purposes, no?
hey thanks appreciated! ya I hope to have manufacturers lend me stuff one day. My channel's too small right now. They look for bigger hitters. :)
