Hi all, massive thanks again to Roger for filming the roof. Like last time it was great fun and the sun was certainly shining. Thanks for all the great and nice comments. 👍.
I have just watched this after 6 months of not seeing it and there is so much information in this video but it is also very relaxing. Learning new things should be one of life's great pleasures, not a chore.
Some things I know I need to learn. Such as the business side of things. When you do a video about such topics I hesitate and add it to my 'watch later list'.
Somethings i love learning about. I'd rather watch somebody chop wood and learn a little tip here and there than watch some bullshit on Netflix or eastenders or something.
What a great guy Dan is. Bought the square to do my roof. Thanks for sharing your knowledge really comes across well. I thought the bit about hobbies and interests gave the video a real human touch. Top draw guys. Like to see more content with Dan.
Totally agree
Thanks for the great comments. Hopefully Roger will have me back soon, when it’s sunny again!
went beyond my skill level when he sharpened his pencil ✏️😂🤣😂🤣😂👍👍
Enjoyed that one. Says he’s been lucky with work. He clearly makes his own luck.
Thanks. It’s been a long time coming.
loved that bit too
who gave Robin a day off?
Always put my string line from the top
Was something I was taught so I've always done it
Always leveled each one as well
No longer
The way Dan did it is brilliant
Always learning something new
Cheers guys
An absolute pleasure to watch a genuine craftsman at work....
Another master craftsman , superb 👌🏼🧱👍🏼
Top Chippy and seems like a top geezer - nice work Dan.
Cheers Andy.
Really enjoyed this one. What a nice guy Dan is and very talented carpenter. Thanks guys 👌🏼🏴👍🏼
Another top quality video! Enjoyed that, will be investing in the roofing square also.
Cheers skill builder! 👍
Great job Daniel, thanks for sharing. Thanks to Roger as well. Cheers till next time.
I'm shortly going to be pitching my own roofs so I've just bought one of these roofing squares - it looks like a great investment to save the cost of expensive or silly mistakes!
Is it better than the roofus square?
@@rutgerhoutdijk3547 It is different, the Roofus does the same thing differently, they are both good. This square is arguably idiot proof and to prove it Roger is going to pitch a hipped roof with it early next year.
@@SkillBuilder I'm counting on it being idiot proof! I'm not a roofer, but I'm doing my own extension and the budget doesn't really allow for too many external contractors, nor mistakes!
@@OfficeBoyBuilder thanks for buying one. Any problems drop me a message, and I’ll try and help out.
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. cheers mate, looking forward to giving it a whirl. I'll do a video/review on my channel too - not a big channel, but I'm sure people will be interested in seeing it being used by a layman
Don’t see many people saying good things about the Makita nail gun, it will be good to hear his thoughts on it
He says it is crap.
@@SkillBuilder haha just what I thought😂
@@SkillBuilder it seemed to take a long time to recycle, and made a lot of noise in the process!
It’s rubbish. I bought the Makita 2 nd fix and it’s good. Thought I’d get the 1st fix , never again..
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. hi were did you get that chunky sliding bevel from and if it's yours that you sell how can I buy one thanks
Really really great to show another personality and to understand a bit about hobbies and that others work 7 days a week for the passion. Also really liked the use of clamps and third hands. Great tips
Glad you liked the video, I’m only to happy for Roger to film it.
Pleased you got something out of the video.
Dan obviously knows his stuff and its fantastic to see Roger encourage him to be more comfortable in front of the camera. Brilliant content from both guys!
Seems like a top guy does Dan - lovely chap, great video 👍
Excellent video with real craftsmanship as usual - thanks Roger and Dan. And it's nice to see a pole barn going up - I don't think we have many of them in England.
Nice work boys, traditional roofing joinery is by far my favourite job. Once you know and understand the maths behind it it is actually pretty damn simple though I have seen plenty of people absolutely baffled by it over the years!
that's looking good men
Another good tutorial dan..your setting out and explanation of the way you do it is great..keep up the good work 👏👏👍🇬🇧
Thanks David.
Beautiful job. Excellent workmanship.

We’re loving the roofing square, thank you! We have a nice roof coming up on an extension that we’re currently building so it will get plenty of use.
@@jimichip nice one. Your more than welcome. 😉
Another good one. Learnt a lot once again. Th@nk you. Last year I passed through Vancouver to get a sea plane to Gabriola Island (15 min flight) to do a Post & Beam building course at The Island School of Building Arts
I like that square but I don't do woodwork, frustrating.
Just hang it on your wall
Super video. Dan, at 15.34, when you talk about one previous commenter saying they measure to the bird's mouth for the rafter length, and that is wrong, I wonder if what they meant is they're measure among the 1/3 line of the rafter to the bird's mouth. In that case they're correct, as their measurement (rafter length) would end up being the same as yours. I say this because the hypotenuse you calculate is a 'line' that runs along the 1/3 line of the rafter. I always refer to the rafter length as that along the 1/3 line to the bird's mouth; just an observation. Once again, I really enjoy this more' real life' video when someone is honest enough to say that 5mm or 10mm is neither here nor there on a roof like this; you're not build a Chippendale piece of furniture. The blocks to hold the string line are a great idea. Funny thing, 25/30 years ago while working with a friend, he mistakenly referred to the bird's mouth as the bird's lips. That name has stuck every since for us. Nice to see the Kapex (looks lovely and new). I know some people knock the Festool, but I've had them from early 2000 and my experience has been almost 100% positive with only one failure which was replaced without issue by Festool UK. I really use my tools too, so people who say they're not fit for hard use are entirely mistaken in my view.
Thanks. Yes I fully understand you can measure parallel in line with the rafter however the gentleman said he measures from top of plumb cut to the birdsmouth. I think we learned at college to measure along the 1/3 line.
I think if you start off very accurate you doing good, then any problems you over come but as you quite rightly say it’s not a piece of furniture and a few mm here and there are not so crucial. Can’t beat some bird lips...
it’s nice to use quality tools!
I’m a chippy myself but I do enjoy watching some of the skill builders videos. It’s good to see the different ways that everyone does things. I much prefer Dan’s vids to robins. Robins always feel a little more forced and less real. I don’t think Dan is as natural behind the camera but that’s what makes it a little more engaging. I also think Dan is much better at explaining his method and takes the route I would. I think robin can go round the houses sometimes even for a beginner. I’ve just bought the roofing square after watching your other vid @Daniel Cox 👍
Thank you Robbie for the great message. I feel very lucky to be able to film with Roger, hopefully more on the way. Yes I’m not so natural being filmed and do find it a bit daunting but Roger usually fires a few questions and puts me at ease. Enjoy using the square. 👍🏻
Forgot to ask Dan. When you mentioned about dividing the ridge span up into equal divisions so as to even out those rafter spacings; 'when the rafter centres drift away from those standard measurements such as 400, 450, and 600 centres, which tie into all those other building materials that are needed for the roof such as insulation, plasterboard sheeting, does changing the rafter centres mess things about as far as fitting those other materials. Thanks Roger and Dan.
It is best to keep the rafter spacings if you are boarding them out
Fishing, gets obsessive so takes up cycling. lol.
I’m not obsessed by cycling, yet...
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. Give it time
That chippy is a credit to the trade. An I K Brunel of the carpentry world.
I take my hat off and bow to such proffesionalism and craftsmenship. I hope you can pass it down to an apprentice someday. How I envy you. I can see why you are always in work. ⭐⭐⭐
He has an apprentice on site 5 days a week. We can't film on the big sites.
Thank you Tony for the high praise. 👍
That rafter square is the best there is and the rollers on the bench is a good idea is the roof going to have collar ties to stop the spreading of the rafters
Yes, the collars did go in after. They went up a bit higher than usual to give it a bigger feel! Think a few lights will be hanging off them. Thanks
Awesome video Guy’s, great craftsmanship Dan love the roof square. I remember when I came across the square on Dans UA-cam a year or so ago I thought then what a great bit of kit makes life easier doesn’t get in the way when dancing throu the rafters hanging off the belt clip, as Roger says in his reviews of different squares truly a well engineered and clear bit of kit, all the best Tony 👍
Thanks Tony, and I’m glad you found me on you tube. 😉. All the best.
Excellent video, very informative 👍
Dan is such a nice knowledgeable fella and his roofing square is superb, really top quality and I wouldn't be without mine.
You should film with Dan more, if possible.

Just a DIYer here for interest, but such a totally watchable video. A really nice guy steadily applying his craft in a beautiful setting and shot well too. Great to see the basics cared for and explained and of course a few tips too. 👍👍👍
Thanks, glad you enjoyed watching it. It was a very hot day, and great fun to do. 👍

What a beautiful building that will be. Nice one Dan, Robin Clevett has some competition! Imagine you two working together, what a dream team that would be!
Why no scaffolding or tower?
Scaffolding is for wimps!
Jason
We don't want to promote bad practice but these guys assess the risks and chose to work off step ladders on a job like this because it is easier than spending half the day moving a tower around.
The ability to move around safely when constructing a roof is a skill you have to learn and it takes years.
If you aren't confident then don't do it.
@@SkillBuilder Problem is, that's not the view the HSE would have if they stumbled across the site, or the courts would have if an accident happened. I do agree with what you say though!
Just when you think you have nothing left to learn lol. Great video lots of great tips from Dan well done m8 and we're can you buy your roofing square

May I ask where do you get the scissor supports from for supporting the timbers on the mitre saw?

Thanks.
Why go all the way to Canada? You could have gone to Scotland and fished a Sturgeon there hahaha
I never thought of that. Actually I want to go to Scotland for some Pike fishing, when we are allowed out again.
What bait could you use to catch the Scottish Sturgeon? It is fairly obvious that she fancies a nibble on Boris.

I remember Robin doing this ..... great job gents.
Great watching this guy work top tradesman good to have a hobby or two to take ya mind of work can take over your life if your not careful 👍
Yes a hobby or two plus his tool design and manufacturing business. His head is full of loads of ideas, most of which he doesn't have time to bring to fruition.
You guys are old school legends, but a health and safety nightmare 😄
I do take H&S seriously. Yes I could fall off a ladder tomorrow, but as I mentioned on a different comment I recently see a young lads foot go between 2 scaffold boards and he fell and bruised his leg. Just be sensible.
I always wear goggles and have ear defenders on, that’s not just for the camera.
Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
Thanks Dan I have yet to use your square but look forward to it. Great information by the way

Thanks again for your great comments. Glad your liking the square!
Happy roofing. 👊🏻
Is there a more enjoyable job than building a roof. Even better on a timber frame
No, it’s one of my favourite aspects of carpentry. 👊🏻
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. same here
He loves a good quick clamp😂
How long before the warriors are in saying they wouldn’t have done it that way
Well five mins in and I’m cringing at a guy pushing heavy timbers on side nails up a ladder without even wearing a hard hat. Yep I wouldn’t have done it that way chap. Notched boards at each end pushed vertically from the ground.then dropped into notches in the boards
There is always someone like you, you can't do it but you comment on someone who can. I measure birdsmouth depth up, but not to the top of the rafter. It achieves exactly the same and is millimetre perfect. It is not the same but does that make me a warrior you prick. I can do this but clearly; you can't.

A bloody good job 👍🏻
Can we see the rest of the build please.
I pitched the roof, the owner has continued with the project. Perhaps I can share some photos when it’s finished. Thanks
Love it
Thanks Brian.
Lovely job.
The chippies on Skill Builder all seem to be round pegs in round holes.
One question though. Does the depth of the seat cut not affect the pitch of the roof? If, for example, and to exagerate to make the issue clearer, you had a 12inch deep rafter and your birdsmouth was 1in deep , would the pitch not be different if the birdsmouth was, say, 8in deep? Or are the differences small enough to be ignored?
The depth of the seat cut doesn’t matter ( as long as you don’t take too much out) as the rafter will go down vertically so the pitch is still the same. This is why you measure on the top of the rafter then plumb it down. Hope it makes sense. Thanks
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. Yeah, got in now. I was probably overthinking it. Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate how busy you must be.
@@daihedral9269 no worries.
Socrates said that we "learn by doing". This is the next best thing, very clear explanations, especially measuring rafter length parallel to the rafter with dimensions plumbed in, and not from the top of the ridge to the birds mouth. Really enjoyed this, thanks for the effort. Diamond Geyser!
Thanks for the great comments. Someone commented on my last video about measuring from the top of rafter to the birdsmouth on main rafters, so I thought I would cover it and try and explain how it works.

Hi Paul, I think it’s they was 175 mm (7 inch)
Usually the ridge is wider than the rafters.

@@Ultimate-roofing-square. Thanks for the reply. Was that speced by an engineer? It seems on the small size for such a large span. Or is it because it's not a residential build that you can get away with a smaller ridge beam? Thanks
