I'm so happy I was able to figure out a good strategy for this boss, a lot of people would do the "rear attack" strategy which yes it did work but I found that it runs out the timer pretty quickly. Believe me it took a WHILE before I found this strategy.
I've struggled against these girls for nearly 30s years now. I'm normally good at catching patterns like this, but in beat-em-up games, I also fight aggressively at times. That falls right into their trap! You definitely made it easy! I felt this game was harder than the sequels!'
Man, this was amazing! Thank you! This was one of the worst boss fights in SoR when I was a kid. Interesting how is much easier to wait for the kicker to kick and then dodge. I used to jump kick all the time, thinking it was best to evade them if I kept moving, dying several times in the process...

@@kakashi101able To grab a regular enemy you can walk right into them. However! For Mona and Lisa you can ONLY grab the kicker after she kicks. You get that tiny window of opportunity to grab her so you have to be quick walking into her. Please let me know if this helps!
@@RetroGameNova Sometimes when I press & hold up + c when a enemy throws me (especially the grabber in Mona & Lisa boss fight) it doesn't work, it works sometimes but sometimes it doesn't EDIT: OK it was just me releasing the damn buttons too quickly

I noticed the grappler and kicker part after I played through the game a couple of times. I always saw it as an illusion du to the fact that they move like a speratic mess. But now that I know that it's a gameplay feature, I think that it adds a lot more depth to a what I like to call a horrible boss fight in an otherwise stellar game and gives them their own seperate personality, being that Mona is the grappler and Lisa the kicker. When one of the sisters (Atleast I assume that they are sisters) gets KO'd the other one goes into a sort of rage mode! Neat...
It took me a while to figure out this strategy and hug the railing a lot . I never really thought about the sisters going into a rage mode after one of them get's ko'd that's pretty cool! I almost wish they were somewhat different in terms of color for this game but i guess maybe due to limited memory? I dunno
@@RetroGameNova well, their artwork suggests that one is wearing green and the other one is wearing blue. Although in game, both sisters wear green and it isn't until stage 8 that they use the blue costume, well it's a more black color, but that's to blame to the limitations I assume.

Retro Game Nova I would personally love to see SoR 1’s Mr. X becoming an easy final boss fight. Although He was much easier than Mona & Lisa, He had a really cheap and broken move that takes about 95% damage on you (on Hardest that is), it’s the gunbuttsmash attack, it’s really fast and not even a jumpkick can stop it. The bullets He shoots out of his Tommy gun are honestly the easiest thing to Dodge in the entire game! All you have to do is that whatever you do, do not stand still! Thank you in advance, i hope that this channel Gets the attention it deserves!

I always thought of it this way: One is the Offense, and the other is Defense. Always concentrate on the Offense, positioning yourself behind her as she fails to jump-kick you. You can use you back attack to keep the Defense away. Yes this is the hardest fight, but it also the funnest!
i think we all needed this video, i played sor 4 years ago and even now, i still have trouble with them, they are the hardest boss in the game, mona and lisa and big ben couldve been the final boss tbh, all he does is shoot his gun (u can dodge them) and he can grapple you but you can avoid that by keeping ur distance

Axel probably struggles the most against the twins because of his poor jump height (he can't counter the kicker by jumping first, unlike Adam and Blaze) and his back attack has quite short range. Speaking of back attack, if you're unable to hurt the kicker because she's backflipping away, but the grappler is in range, you can perform a back attack that does decent damage and which usually lands successfully. Adam has a small delay though so you have to be careful with your timing, whereas Axel and Blaze's back attacks land instantly. I generally play as Blaze because despite her lower attack power, she has good speed and crowd control with her long-range throw.
Interesting, I thank you for your insight WaterCrane! I like using the characters in this order Adam, Blaze, Axel. I don't know why but Axel never really intrigued me at all and I 100% agree with you on that short jump kick is somewhat a huge flaw.
I played this time and time again and I never knew about the up+c. Wow mind blown lol this fight was just a nightmare when fighting them here and later on in game. You just made this look so easy lol great vid👍👍👍

Another super tip. Turn your back on them, then as soon as they’re within reach, press jump and punch simultaneously. Gets ‘em everytime coz they dont see it coming.
Ah yes the “rear attack” as it states in the manual (no joke) I remember using that technique and did not like it that much just because I always ran out of time
Wow I remember finding this difficult in the early 90's, and even harder when playing on the xbox 360 collections and now ps4 collections 🤣. I had no idea until now one of them was a kicker and the other a grapple! Never ever noticed, even after all these years. So much easier now
Dude...the only way I found to beat them at the time was to get as much life as possible and use the police to kill them little by little. Here's the funny kicker...I've never managed to finish the game because you see the twins again at the end. Thanks for this!

This guide helps a ton. I doubt I would have been able to beat them on the 2nd fight without it. They still kick my butt on the regular though, I need more practice.

Another weird but easy method I’ve used since childhood is going over to the end of either side of the screen with your back facing the opponents and using the back kick on them as they approach, Axel sucks at it but the other 2 work fine. The timing part can be challenging but it doesn’t take long at all to get the hang of it.
They’ll drain your lives and continues right before Mr. X, and the other thing you can’t cheese them with the Special attacks because you’re in the building.
This is true but this guide can help you without relying on the special. Practicing this was helpful to as you mentioned they're the last boss before Mr.X!
lol XD These two were nightmares for a lot of people apparently. They're just so cheap! Everyone always recommended that back attack and I'm like there has to be a better way. And so there is :D
This was a huge request by a lot of people AND I know this boss is a pain for well....everyone! lol So I had to figure out a strategy, this one makes the most sense to me. I've seen other strategies where you would do a reverse attack but it takes too long!....I think and I'm glad you found this video helpful :D
*sigh!* I've always had my ass kicked by those twins. They were OP as hell. I wish your advice came 30 years ago. I could only beat them using Game Genie. (yeah, I'm a cheater!)
My best is with Blaze against Mona and Lisa. If you hold B Then + Press C, She can do that back kick thing. She's untouchable with that Back Kick. You just stand to the far end of the stage and when Mona goes for a kick, time it right and you'll knock her out of the air. Lisa, Since she's a grappler, She'll just walk up to you. Careful when using this strategy. It has just one flaw. Sometimes, Lisa falls first and if that happens, Mona becomes both Grappler and Kicker. So, Make sure you time it so that when she walks up to you from behind, She's not close enough to grab you that way you can stop the suplex from happening. On hardest mode, You only have 25 seconds. Sometimes less depending on how you did against the other enemies. For Axel, His backhand doesn't work against Mona and Lisa that well because of its shorter range so I would recommend the same strategy that was applied here for Adam in this video. Amazing Strat. Streets of Rage 1 and 2 are so good. It's mainly Streets of Rage 3 that hits me with a Game Over every time. But what else can one do but Get Good, right? Thanks for the amazing video.
I keep hearing everyone has trouble with Streets of Rage 3, I’ve got to tackle those bosses soon. I’ve done the “rear attack” strategy before with Blaze, Axel, and Adam. It works quite well but I’ve never heard of Mona and Lisa alternating roles, that’s wild. Thank you for letting me know that. I prefer using this strategy I’ve discovered as it’s a bit quicker! @@RetroGameNova Well, when Mona is low on health, she'll shift to grappler for one final attempt to grab and suplex you from behind. She'll front flip over you and just straight up suplex from behind if you don't watch her carefully. I like your strategy too. It really spices things up when you have a rail guard at the top of the stage. My first time fighting them, I didn't even know about landing on your feet so they game over'd me plenty of times before I got good enough for hardest mode.
@@RetroGameNova As long as you know that Mona is the Kicker and Lisa is the grappler, its not too hard to figure out but you are timed. You have to beat them in less than 20 seconds.
Up+C to avoid throw damage are you kidding me hahaha. My whole life was just turned upside down. Does this work in all streets of rage games??? Amazing tips as usual dude
Thank you s s gill I appreciate that a lot, I find this strategy can defeat them a lot faster. I have tried using Adam's kick against them and I found it to be a bit inconsistent with landing it.
I discoverd it few months ago 😂 you use bad combinations, after grappling the kicker deliver two knee blows then press jump and perform a suplex this way you can do even more damage.
I'll have to try that sometime. The strategy I'm showing too me is the safest way to defeat them as you're kneeing Mona (Kicker) you're avoiding that cheap suplex from Lisa.(Grappler)
I found it frustrating that you took the frustration out of the frustrating boss fight that plagued me for years since I was a kid... ...Did I say it was frustrating?
My method is easier but takes a bit longer. Just move to one side, facing away from the twins. As soon as the kicker jumps, get ready to use the back attack to shut her down then walk towards the grappler to make her retreat. Rinse and repeat. I have only used this method with Axel, I'm not sure if Adam and Blaze's back attack has the same hitbox as Axel.
Have you played streets of rage remake? Because i wonder if the up + c works in there, because fudge some of the enemies take half of your health with one throw in higher difficulties and is the only thing some enemies do lol
I unfortunately don't have any platform to play the new Streets of Rage 4 :/ It looks awesome and really??? Damn that's so cheap for the unprepared! I see though that there's combo's which is sweet! I hope all is well Master Potato (love your name by the way) during these difficult times!

You want to make this boss fight truly easy? When the fight starts, jump kick towards the grappler to get her to spin jump behind you and keep moving to the left edge of the stage (I tend to just walk into the upper left corner). Then, just keep using the rear attack (B + C) to keep beating on the grappler as all she does is walk towards you when your back is turned and repel the kicker when she comes at you. Assuming you don't miss any inputs, you can easily destroy this boss just by standing in place, facing the edge of the stage and attacking behind you when needed. It's a bit cheap, but these enemies are cheap with their high priority attacks and constant dodging. I don't feel bad in the least for wiping the floor with them this way. Since I found this out, I've not once lost a life against this boss, nor do you need to worry about the timer with their backflipping offscreen since they just keep walking into the metaphorical grinder. Edit: I wanted to clarify that I pretty much only play Blaze in this game, so I've never tested this with Adam or Axel, though I can't imagine this strategy would be much different with either of their rear attacks. In fact, it might even be faster with their higher damage.
I've experimented with the rear attack strategy but not as methodical as your strategy. I just found I was always cutting it close with the time but I was probably in the wrong spot or I was too aggressive trying to use the rear attack. That being said I found this strategy just noticing their patterns. i can confidently say any one of the 3 can use this strategy. Thank you for your input zeemaster99! Although sometimes it's hard even to grab the kicker (Mona or Lisa I don't know which one is which and frankly I could care less) without the grabber grabbing YOU and suplexing your ass. I just found that punching her after she jump-kicked seemed to work, because every other time you try and attack them, they'll immediately grab and suplex you without any rhyme or reason whatsoever. It's like the programmers of MK2 designed this boss fight.... and sometimes it's better if you have a weapon on you. Particularly a pipe or a bat. Do you happen to have a video on Zamza? Because that bastard is hard to beat too
@@RetroGameNova They're kinda easier in SOR remake since you can just run to get the speed to get behind the kicker and grab her while she jumps now LOL. EDIT: Just realized they can run too, and they do whenever you do, so yea they are still as hard as before. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. IDK how but I got a sudden burst of skill and managed to defeat them with a lot of ease. I gotta say from my observations both SOR1 & SOR3 versions of Mona Lisa are vulnerable to being grabbed, but SOR1 ones are harder to get a hold of
@@RetroGameNova But is it a coincident that the bosses considered as one of the toughest non-stage 8 bosses of their respective games, in both games, ended up being on the SHIP level? I wonder what in the WORLD Mr. X was transporting on those ships to put them in charge as the final line of defense...
It's all about watching the kicker and grappling her. Just keep your eye on her as you're doing this strategy, it takes a bit of practice but you'll get it! :D

I played this last night and could beat literally every part of the game but them in Round 8 on 3 lives. Lost like 2 continues to them :( NO MORE!!!

They must've used that old trope that "certain" people can't jump, like Axel. That's how I always saw it. 😆

Dude...the only way I found to beat them at the time was to get as much life as possible and use the police to kill them little by little. Here's the funny kicker...I've never managed to finish the game because you see the twins again at the end. Thanks for this!

This guide helps a ton. I doubt I would have been able to beat them on the 2nd fight without it. They still kick my butt on the regular though, I need more practice.

In childhood I used to call them simply green Blazes.
I always thought they may have been Blazes sisters back in the day
Another weird but easy method I’ve used since childhood is going over to the end of either side of the screen with your back facing the opponents and using the back kick on them as they approach, Axel sucks at it but the other 2 work fine. The timing part can be challenging but it doesn’t take long at all to get the hang of it.
After all these years it's the first time i hear that you can avoid the damage from being thrown
They’ll drain your lives and continues right before Mr. X, and the other thing you can’t cheese them with the Special attacks because you’re in the building.
This is true but this guide can help you without relying on the special. Practicing this was helpful to as you mentioned they're the last boss before Mr.X!

My pleasure Loco Bandito and my apologies for replying so late to your comment! Those two weren't my favorite either, very little room for error.
My best is with Blaze against Mona and Lisa. If you hold B Then + Press C, She can do that back kick thing. She's untouchable with that Back Kick. You just stand to the far end of the stage and when Mona goes for a kick, time it right and you'll knock her out of the air. Lisa, Since she's a grappler, She'll just walk up to you. Careful when using this strategy. It has just one flaw. Sometimes, Lisa falls first and if that happens, Mona becomes both Grappler and Kicker. So, Make sure you time it so that when she walks up to you from behind, She's not close enough to grab you that way you can stop the suplex from happening. On hardest mode, You only have 25 seconds. Sometimes less depending on how you did against the other enemies.
For Axel, His backhand doesn't work against Mona and Lisa that well because of its shorter range so I would recommend the same strategy that was applied here for Adam in this video. Amazing Strat. Streets of Rage 1 and 2 are so good. It's mainly Streets of Rage 3 that hits me with a Game Over every time. But what else can one do but Get Good, right?

I’ve done the “rear attack” strategy before with Blaze, Axel, and Adam. It works quite well but I’ve never heard of Mona and Lisa alternating roles, that’s wild. Thank you for letting me know that.
I prefer using this strategy I’ve discovered as it’s a bit quicker!

@@RetroGameNova Well, when Mona is low on health, she'll shift to grappler for one final attempt to grab and suplex you from behind. She'll front flip over you and just straight up suplex from behind if you don't watch her carefully. I like your strategy too. It really spices things up when you have a rail guard at the top of the stage. My first time fighting them, I didn't even know about landing on your feet so they game over'd me plenty of times before I got good enough for hardest mode.
I feel taking those 2 on in the hardest mode would be an absolute nightmare
@@RetroGameNova As long as you know that Mona is the Kicker and Lisa is the grappler, its not too hard to figure out but you are timed. You have to beat them in less than 20 seconds.
Personally, I like using my method. This consists of dying alot and using police back up

I just cheese the fight by facing the opposite direction, then back attack when they try to hit me. Rinse and repeat lol.
I used to do that to but it I find it runs out the clock pretty quickly

you use bad combinations, after grappling the kicker deliver two knee blows then press jump and perform a suplex this way you can do even more damage.
I'll have to try that sometime. The strategy I'm showing too me is the safest way to defeat them as you're kneeing Mona (Kicker) you're avoiding that cheap suplex from Lisa.(Grappler)

My method is easier but takes a bit longer.
Just move to one side, facing away from the twins. As soon as the kicker jumps, get ready to use the back attack to shut her down then walk towards the grappler to make her retreat. Rinse and repeat.
I have only used this method with Axel, I'm not sure if Adam and Blaze's back attack has the same hitbox as Axel.
I know of this strategy, it's a very common one. I've ran out the clock using that strategy but it is the safest!
Have you played streets of rage remake? Because i wonder if the up + c works in there, because fudge some of the enemies take half of your health with one throw in higher difficulties and is the only thing some enemies do lol

You want to make this boss fight truly easy? When the fight starts, jump kick towards the grappler to get her to spin jump behind you and keep moving to the left edge of the stage (I tend to just walk into the upper left corner). Then, just keep using the rear attack (B + C) to keep beating on the grappler as all she does is walk towards you when your back is turned and repel the kicker when she comes at you. Assuming you don't miss any inputs, you can easily destroy this boss just by standing in place, facing the edge of the stage and attacking behind you when needed. It's a bit cheap, but these enemies are cheap with their high priority attacks and constant dodging. I don't feel bad in the least for wiping the floor with them this way. Since I found this out, I've not once lost a life against this boss, nor do you need to worry about the timer with their backflipping offscreen since they just keep walking into the metaphorical grinder.
Edit: I wanted to clarify that I pretty much only play Blaze in this game, so I've never tested this with Adam or Axel, though I can't imagine this strategy would be much different with either of their rear attacks. In fact, it might even be faster with their higher damage.
I've experimented with the rear attack strategy but not as methodical as your strategy. I just found I was always cutting it close with the time but I was probably in the wrong spot or I was too aggressive trying to use the rear attack. That being said I found this strategy just noticing their patterns. i can confidently say any one of the 3 can use this strategy.

Although sometimes it's hard even to grab the kicker (Mona or Lisa I don't know which one is which and frankly I could care less) without the grabber grabbing YOU and suplexing your ass. I just found that punching her after she jump-kicked seemed to work, because every other time you try and attack them, they'll immediately grab and suplex you without any rhyme or reason whatsoever. It's like the programmers of MK2 designed this boss fight....
and sometimes it's better if you have a weapon on you. Particularly a pipe or a bat. Do you happen to have a video on Zamza? Because that bastard is hard to beat too

EDIT: Just realized they can run too, and they do whenever you do, so yea they are still as hard as before. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. IDK how but I got a sudden burst of skill and managed to defeat them with a lot of ease. I gotta say from my observations both SOR1 & SOR3 versions of Mona Lisa are vulnerable to being grabbed, but SOR1 ones are harder to get a hold of
